Here in New Zealand as we approach the Winter Solstice in the Southern Hemisphere (21 June) the days are shorter and the nights are longer. With Climate Change the unpredictable weather has seen Kiwis getting out the winter woollies much earlier and the months ahead are daunting, especially for the elderly. The Winter Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere was very different, with pantomimes, parties, nativity plays, and Christmas decorations. Planning for the activities began weeks before as schools, churches, community groups and businesses came together. Family gatherings for the festive season often continued into the New Year. As well as all the excitement for the arrival of the Santa, the icing on the cake was a white Christmas, which bought laughter as toboggans were dusted off and snowmen built.

Not that Raglan was without a Winter Pageant. Queen’s Birthday Weekend saw the results of many months of hard work as hundreds crowded into the Town Hall for the biennial Raglan Art to Wear Extravaganza. With all the winter weather that Mother Nature could muster the Raglan community came together and produced a spectacular event to warm the cockles of the heart! Keeping warm and active and socializing is important for all ages, but especially the elderly. There are a variety of Senior Groups in Raglan and recently, Belinda Goodwin has offered Nia Dance Classes at a greatly reduced prices for Gold Card holders ($8.00 for casuals or 25 dollars for 5 sessions). The classes are held at: • The Raglan Town Hall on Tuesday evening at 7.30pm. • Thursday morning at the Activate Church, Taipari Avenue, Raglan West at 9.15am. • Every second Saturday morning at 9.30am at the Activate Church. Next session June 16. Contact Belinda on 8257577 or 0275407422 or niawithbelinda@ gmail.com

lip into your best sari, salwar or kurti and head to Four Square Raglan for a night of delectable Indian food, culture and entertainment. Manager Satnam Bains says the evening is a way for the Four Square family to celebrate the Raglan community and everyone is invited to come along for the free buffet style meal and entertainment. “It’s our way of saying thank you to the community for supporting us by sharing a nice meal and learning about our culture.” Satnam has enlisted the help of his

mum, dad and other family members to cook some of the family favourites from their region of Punjab. “There will be about five or six of my family cooking and it will take them about six hours to prepare.” On the menu will be a chicken curry, vegetarian curry, rice and naan and as well as the free buffet there will also be free henna body art. Come dressed Indian-styles and be in to win prizes for best dressed male, female and family, plus plenty of spot prizes. The store will be open as usual, so Satnam is warning customers there will be no carparks available on the night, but says

if they don’t mind parking further away they will be rewarded for their walk with a fine feast. There will be plates and cutlery provided but people are welcome to bring their own plus take-away containers for any left-overs. “We had heaps of leftover food last year and we don’t want it to be wasted,” he says. Around 800 people attended last year and Satnam is expecting more this year. Janine Jackson • Head to Four Square Raglan for the Indian Cultural Night on Friday, June 15 at 7.30pm – rain date is Saturday, June 16.

Busy as bees: Hannah and Rory in the honey shed with Alice in the bee suit and Kieran.

T

hey bought their first hives only two years ago but already the couple who started Hunt & Gather Bee Co. at Te Mata say they can hardly keep up with the demand for their jars of sweet kamahi, rewarewa and bush blend honeys.

“It’s starting to work,” a buzzing Hannah O’Brien told the Chronicle of their thriving venture. “It’s really exciting.” Husband Rory – aka the chief beekeeper – agrees, saying early feedback from customers has been “great ... phenomenal”. The pair can be found most days hard at work, if not busy as bees, on their Te Papatapu Road property just beyond the turnoff to Bridal Veil Falls. Along with their children, five-year-old Kieran and twoyear-old Alice, they’re living for now in a tiny part of their basic year-old honey shed. Rory and Hannah admit it was a risk a couple of years back to sell their rental house in Te Aroha so they could buy their couple of acres at Te Mata along with the first 24 of the 150-odd beehives they now have scattered around the Raglan district and the Coromandel. They were living at the time in Tairua, where Rory was working for a small-scale commercial beekeeper after earlier stints on dairy farms in the Waikato. The pair say they’d increasingly felt passionate about going it alone and trying out their own beekeeping lifestyle. They liked being part of an industry that had a more positive impact on the environment and on family life. The Raglan district was a logical location to pursue their dream because Hannah’s mother, Fiona McNabb, had transferred here from Tairua years previously when her son Sean Peggs – Hannah’s brother – entered Raglan Surf Academy. While the first year’s focus was to grow hive numbers, this latest year the emphasis has switched to honey production. All up the couple’s hives are home to about 60,000 bees when the season’s in full swing. Rory and Hannah joke they can now look forward to having hundreds of thousands of new family members each year. But it hasn’t all been happy families. The now 30-somethings did get into a sticky situation early

on, when Hannah was eight months’ pregnant with Alice. Stung by a bee, Hannah went into anaphylactic shock and within half an hour was on the way to hospital in an ambulance. “I was in a very bad way.” On recovery, she was told to carry an EpiPen and to stay away from bees – a tall order when, as Hannah observes, “we had actually just invested every bit of money we had (in beehives)”. Although not keen to be stung again, Hannah hasn’t let it hold her back and simply takes care around bees. Kieran has his own bee suit and is right in there beekeeping with his dad while Alice “picks up bees all the time” and occasionally gets stung. Rory not only does the hands-on beekeeping but also builds the boxes – each with 10 removable frames – that get stacked six storeys high as each bee colony continues to grow. Unlike most beekeepers he builds from scratch, using no plastics so it’s “quite labour-intensive”. Running an ethical, sustainable business is an important part of the Hunt & Gather ethos. It’s something Hannah and Rory put at the forefront of their decision-making. “We use wooden hives, we get our honey packaged in glass jars and we print our labels on paper,” says Hannah. “We’re trying to leave the world a better place for our kids.” They also make the most of what their bees can offer, so as well as collecting honey there are other products like reusable beeswax food wraps and beeswax boot polish to make. The unassuming honey house is frequently a hive of industry. The couple sell their own honey at markets around the Waikato, and will set up for the first time at Raglan’s monthly creative market on Sunday. “We really want to bring a good-quality, locally produced product to the locals,” says Rory. And they’ll be on site with Xero – their cloudbased software accounting system – at the Mystery Creek Fieldays next week, giving away coffees and jars of honey. Rory says Xero is "fantastic, so easy to use". Hannah adds it's made a big difference now the business is growing, keeping paperwork to a minimum. Edith Symes

Art to Wear 2018 I

t’s a little bit embarrassing for me to admit, but this was the first time I’ve attended the biennial Raglan Art to Wear Show.

Every two years we usually see Jean and her crew frantically running around organizing everything and every two years the photos come into the Chronicle office and it looks absolutely stunning. So to watch the show live and see all the hard work come to fruition was an absolute pleasure. There were five different sections for this year’s show: The show opened with the children’s section ‘Circus Circus’ which was a multicoloured display of carnival antics. I was blown away by the quality of the kids entries, from the ideas and execution of the garment, to the modelling and showmanship shown on the stage what a bunch of little professionals. The ‘Paua Power’ section was a dazzling show in iridescent hues of greens, pinks, purples and blues. Some entries a more literal translation of the paua shell and others a more conceptual interpretation of what the paua shell represents. The upcycled section was a feat in ingenuity with over 80% of the materials used in the garment being repurposed material. The category winner for this section was one of my favourites with the pair of catholic inspired pieces reminiscent of Alexander McQueen. A new category this year, the ‘Heads Up: Mystery Box’ section produced some of the most spectacular pieces of the show. I really felt for the judges in this section with the quality of the entries being so high. Long-time judge Wanda Barker noted that judging is always exceptionally hard and a lot of the time it really comes down to small details like the final finishing on a garment that could push an entry over the line. The supreme winner, ‘Liberated’ by Annick Faubert and Candide Lecourtois was a spectacular interpretation of the roaring twenties that touched on the women’s liberation movement. Model for ‘Liberated’, Ruth Hare was another highlight of the night who really worked the garment and added some spice to the show. In fact all the models that participated were so great at showcasing their garments and really made the pieces shine. The final section, ‘Kaitiakitanga’, had some thoughtful pieces that reflected elements of nature and the importance of looking after the Earth. Earthy tones and textures were represented in this category with some show stopping moments. I felt goose bumps when the category winner, ‘Manaia’ by Kay Buchanan, walked down the cat walk. The model’s purposeful movements and the beautiful tooling work on the leather garment made for an exquisite finale to an overall spectacular show. This year was Jean’s 10th year organising this event and every year it seems to go from strength to strength. A great addition to Raglan’s event calendar, I can’t wait for the next one in two years’ time. Maki Nishiyama All images thanks to Desmond Nielsen. Full list of results on page 7.

Tarot Talk

H

ello again from Tarot Talk - a weekly column in which I introduce a Tarot card for the week and provide a little information about it. I hope you continue to enjoy this space.

This week's card is Strength. This card comes to us as a reminder that we have the ability to deal with whatever life brings. It can represent a breakthrough or overcoming obstacles. It tells us to have faith and confidence in ourselves. We often think of strength in physical terms - big arms, powerful legs etc - but there is also inner strength - strength which comes from exercise of the heart muscle. It is perseverance, courage, resolve and composure - qualities that help us

endure when times are tough. In the past, a person with inner strength was commonly said to have character; he or she could be counted on in the darkest moments. Strength represents this energy of quiet determination. It is not a flashy card, but one that is solid and reliable and represents patience and compassion. Getting angry is easy when events turn sour, but dealing calmly with frustrations takes great strength. So does accepting others and forgiving mistakes. We need strength to mould situations softly – this card shows the need to be subtle; to show love and compassion. The lion (itself a symbol of strength) is being guided and tamed by the woman's gentle hands. This card can sometimes tell us that there is a need to tame some part of ourselves or that we have already done so. Strength is our ally and our challenge. There are powerful spiritual forces at work and obstacles to success will be overcome.

aglan’s newest fitness offering has arrived and is already developing a keen following. Seed Pilates, owned and operated by Lisa Laity proudly offers the Raglan community Reformer Pilates. Described as a bed with a springloaded carriage, the reformer is a popular choice among Pilates-goers, with hundreds of machines already dotted around New Zealand’s major centres and leading studios.

“I’m really excited to be able to offer Reformer Pilates to the Raglan community. The reformer is an incredible machine and its benefits can be enjoyed and accessed by everyone,” says Lisa. “The reformer offers an interesting and dynamic variation to traditional mat Pilates. It allows for greater range and movement, diversity and above all else, offers an incredible full body workout, “ she says.

health company, creating supplements for their well-known product line. Rebecca has also managed her own naturopathic practice, ‘Sage Clinic’ in Auckland, the Bay of Plenty and now Hamilton. Outside of work, Rebecca likes to upskill by attending various seminars, particularly those involving Rongoa Maori. She makes political submissions to protect the natural health industry, and shares treatment protocols in health magazines to help other practitioners. She has also recently been nominated and selected as a committee member of the NZAMH (New Zealand Association of Medical Herbalists). Rebecca has relocated from Pukehina to be back in her home town of Hamilton. She is thrilled to be working in Raglan as she spent a lot of time growing up here and likes to be near to the beach and bush. Rebecca feels that there is no problem too big or small where natural medicine can’t play a beneficial role. She enjoys helping clients who have rare and complicated conditions. Rebecca is available for consultations at the Nourish Clinic and for in-store shop advise. To book an appointment with Rebecca phone 07 8257444 or pop into to say hi. The Herbal Dispensary, Ph. 07 825 7444.

Lisa has spent the past three years studying towards her Comprehensive Studio Practitioner qualification with Polestar Pilates, the world’s leading Pilates training provider. She is also a certified Group Fitness Instructor with 10 years experience and an Anatomy and Physiology graduate. “My journey with Pilates began after the birth of our second child. It only took a couple of sessions before I realised the enormous benefit Pilates could have on my life and overall wellbeing. By focusing on form and functional movement, I am able to go about my life and the things I enjoy doing with increased body awareness, ease of movement and most importantly, I can keep up with my kids. There’s nothing more important than that,” she says. Down the track I’d love to be able to offer the community even more in terms of Pilates. My training also covers mat Pilates, Trapeze Table, Wunda and Exo Chairs Ladder Barrel and Spine Corrector; all incredible pieces of apparatus in their own right,” says Lisa. Lisa is offering private one-on-one reformer sessions, which include an initial fitness screening and consultation. For more information or to book a session you can contact Lisa at: seedpilates@gmail. com
