Tarot Talk

H

ello again from Tarot Talk - a weekly column in which I introduce a Tarot card for the week and provide a little information about it. I hope you continue to enjoy this space.

This week's card is the King of Pentacles. The court cards in tarot (kings, queens, knights and pages) are usually considered to represent either people in our lives, aspects of our own personality or their specific attributes are ones we could usefully adopt at this time. This card can represent the fulfilment of a creative task, business venture, or investment. Here we see a king who has reached the pinnacle of his financial power and influence and is able to rest, assured of his continued prosperity. He is no longer required to struggle to achieve what he wants. This card can also be the symbol for wealth and luck. The King of Pentacles could be called King Midas as he turns everything he touches to gold (riches of all kinds). He finds opportunity everywhere and succeeds at whatever he sets his mind to. He is enterprising and adept. Whatever the task, he handles it competently, drawing on his wide range of skills and practical knowledge. He is always dependable and responsible. He gives generously of his time and resources because he knows that by giving more, you receive more. He encourages others in their accomplishments and lends his support whenever it is needed. The King of Pentacles asks us to take the kinds of actions he might take e.g. keep a commitment, act responsibly, work hard etc. More information about this card can be found on my Tarot Talk Facebook page https://www.facebook. com/tarottalknz/ Tarot readings and tuition are available by appointment. ‘So helpful’ locals make surfing couple’s big day

Billy and Liana, with Obie, relax at home before their big day.

T

here’s been a groundswell of support from the Raglan community to help ensure next week’s wedding of pro surfer Billy Stairmand to local surf shop manager Liana Parker is judged a perfect 10. “Everyone’s been so helpful,” Liana told the Chronicle just ahead of the couple’s big day. “It’s quite overwhelming, and I know I’m living in a really good place.” The 33 year old – who’s originally from Cornwall in England – reckons she has everything now, from bunting and vintage table runners to lighting and locally made dream catchers, after putting out a plea for help on Facebook last week. “Wedding is looming, budget is small,” she posted after a little encouragement from friends. “Looking for some kind donations to make mine and Billy Stairmand’s day beautiful.” The response has all but guaranteed the Friday afternoon boho-chic wedding on private property in Whale Bay should go off without a hitch – other than their own hitching, of course.

The location they’ve chosen has a “really amazing view” overlooking both the remote surfing break Spot X and Whaingaroa Harbour, enthuses Billy who grew up in Raglan, attended the local surfing academy and has gone on to win the New Zealand open men’s title a record six times. The 28 year old was on site last weekend, building a deck from which the pair will say their vows. Also on site is an old barn which will be strewn with hay bales to create a casual setting for the 100-odd guests to socialise after the wedding ceremony. Fittingly, the Point Boardriders marquee will also be erected close by. “We’ll keep it Kiwi,” Billy insists of the big day. It’ll be shorts, shirts and jandals for the guys if it’s hot, he reckons. He and Liana will wear white but there’ll be some formality with blue suspenders (braces) and a blue bow tie for Billy. The couple’s two-year-old dog Obie will walk down the aisle – on a leash and ‘suitably’ attired – with one of Liana’s bridesmaids. The marriage celebrant will be longtime local Wayne Morris who’s known Billy since he was a grom with long blond hair (Liana

confesses to confusing Billy with a girl in an early family photo). Raglan Buds is in charge of flowers and Molly McCabe, who grew up at Manu Bay, will do photos and filming. Billy and Liana met five years ago in Newquay – dubbed the UK’s surf capital – when he was at a WQS (world qualifying series) surf comp and she was working for Quicksilver, managing the town’s then local surf shop. Soon after, he invited her on a holiday to Spain. As fate would have it, Liana had just decided to make a move Down Under anyway. Billy says he bought a ring and built up the courage to pop the question on a romantic picnic at Wainui Bush Park 18 months ago because they’d been together so long and it was all working so well. Now he’s excited at getting friends and family together – from as far away as England and Australia – to “celebrate our love … celebrate the future”. Billy’s only regret is the absence of his mother Anita who lost her fight with breast cancer more than a year ago now. But he flew her over from Australia for their engagement party in Raglan, where she also got to say goodbye to old friends. It was “bittersweet”, says Liana. There’ll be no honeymoon just yet, say the couple. Billy is off over the ditch on Sunday for two weeks, for the World Qualifying Series 6000 at Newcastle and Manly. They agree they’d like, say, two children of their own but not for at least a couple of years as there are some serious surfing goals to be tackled first. Billy’s keen to make the World Championship Tour for which he needs to be among the top 10, competitively, by the end of this year. “I’m pretty far down at the moment,” he says. Then there’s the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan – the first time surfing’s included as an Olympic sport. It’s Billy’s other big goal and Liana’s right behind him, considering he’s “still in his 20s”. Meantime there’s always Obie – the next best to having a grom of their own, they reckon. Edith Symes

Holiday music for kids hits the right note Y oung Raglan musicians turned composers after a two-day workshop at the Old School Arts Centre recently.

Run by Ruth Power with her husband Kane (drummer/audio engineer/podcaster of Musicians Map) in support, Inspire! Holiday Music Program introduces instrument making, percussion, music experimentation, jamming and composition to musos-in-the-making. Ruth says she spent the past year developing online piano courses and was keen to bring music to the students in a live setting. “I needed to connect with students and see their amazed expressions as they learn a new riff or discover their musical creativity. Those are the rewards of teaching face-to-face that I had missed.” During the workshops, the young performers made percussion instruments from craft materials, learnt to hit, shake or tap in time with a beat and how to jam along to a backing track using the C blues scale. “The kids were also encouraged to experiment on a keyboard with headphones connected to various iPad music apps, jam out a beat on the drum sampling pad and the DJ request box gave everyone a chance to choose the songs they wanted to hear for the blindfolded disco at the end of the day,” Ruth says.

Inspire! Raglan is making music fun - from left Hannah, Pippa, Indie, Ivan, Ember, Harry, Ruth (teacher), Matta. Not pictured Kane (teacher), Aquila.

The course culminated in the group creating and recording an original song about living in Raglan. “We talked about musical styles and their characteristics, then deciding which style to aim for, began writing a song together,” she says. The students chose the song topic, title, wrote all the lyrics and with a few tips from Ruth and Kane each contributed to the recording with percussion, guitar, piano, singing and even a rap break. “Watching these eight faces express a mixture of surprise, wonder and pride as we listened back to their song is the priceless

payoff that I miss from running music courses online. It convinces us to do this again next holidays, but bigger and much, much louder,” she says. Ruth studied music at Wintec and spent several years working and performing in London with her prog rock band Death in Texas. She can tailor piano, vocal and music programmes for groups and one-to-one, and to suit all ages. Check out the students’ composition at https://youtu.be/p9sLJQooLF8. Stingray surprised by local man swimming in the harbour

Con Jackson was stung by a ray at Cox's Bay last week.

R

aglan local Con Jackson counts himself lucky to be alive after a stingray incident sent him to hospital for emergency bowel surgery. What felt like an axe attack turned out to be pain from the venomous barb of a stingray wound suffered while swimming in the shallows at Cox Bay recently. “I had been out for an afternoon swim and was about to stand up, when I must have swum over the ray in maybe 70cm of muddy water,” he says. “Apparently they whip their tail up with great force if they feel threatened. The pain was intense, so crippling I was lucky there was a man walking on the beach, who came and helped me from the water.” He was taken to West Coast Medical Centre by the man he thinks was named Brian and his wife, was treated and promptly sent to Waikato Hospital by ambulance where he spent seven days recovering from surgery. Although the injury looked innocuous at first glance, the barb had punctured the 70-year-old’s small intestine and narrowly missed some vital organs. “A punctured bowel causes severe infection in the abdominal cavity (peritonitis) and in earlier times would have been fatal,” he says.

University of Waikato stingray researcher Helen Cadwallader says the ray is likely to have been a short or long-tail as they have barbs up to 30cm long and lift their tails over their heads like a scorpion. “They only ever defend themselves, they are used to defending themselves against orcas and sharks.” The long-tail has a very long tail which is slender at the end while the short-tail stingray has white spot markings either side of its body. Short-tails reach in excess of 2.3

metres in width and long-tails in excess of 2.1 metres. Helen says during her years of tagging stingrays for research purposes she and her colleagues have never been ‘stung’ and the incidence of stingray fatalities worldwide is extremely rare. Not a lot is known about these graceful marine creatures and she says the warmer waters could be bringing more stingray into the shallows or it could just be that the warm weather is bringing more people into the water. Still in recovery after his surgery, Con says his brush with the stingray will not keep him from swimming and has since been down to Cox Bay to paddle in the water. However, he says he will take a different approach to swimming in the harbour. “If you shuffle through the shallow water of mudflats they will usually be aware of you and move off.” "My biggest mistake was probably to swim alone - never a safe practice really. If I had been in the water with other people, the stingray would have moved away from the general disturbance. They are beautiful creatures and I recommend treating them with respect.” Helen agrees with the move she calls the stingray shuffle especially for the murkier mudflat waters and recommends being aware of what’s in the water when you dive in for a swim or jump off your surfboard. "The short and long-tailed rays will raise their tail when they are threatened. When you are swimming, diving or snorkelling close to a ray, just back away and enjoy them from a distance.” She also advises hot water, as hot as you can handle it, applied to the wound to denature the protein in the venom and reduce pain. The D4 return after 12 year hiatus

The D4 from left, Jimmy Christmas, Beaver Pooley, Vaughan Williams and Dion Lunadon.

K

iwi garage rockers, The D4, notorious for some of their rowdy live shows, are reforming the band after a 12 year hiatus and they'll be playing at the YOT Club on Friday, February 16. The Chronicle caught up with vocalist Jimmy Christmas ahead of their Raglan show. What's bringing you guys back together? The conversation really began when it was announced that the Kings Arms tavern in Auckland was due to close. That venue was hugely important in the story of the D4. We used to rehearse around the corner and walk our gear down the street on gig nights. The D4 played many many memorable shows there, including one night when the PA literally caught fire. It was a natural conclusion that we should be involved in its final fling. That show was anchored by a slot at Auckand City Limits and the tour built from there. Twelve years is quite some time, what have you been up to? It’s been busy – Dion is in NYC and has been playing in a band called A Place To Bury Strangers and also releasing his own albums as True Lovers and Dion Lunadon. I have been recording albums and touring with my band Luger Boa, Beaver holds the throne for Jordan Luck Band, and Jake our original bass player has his own outfit, Thee Rum Coves. So theres been no grass growing under these feet, and everybody is very match fit. Could this mini D4 resurrection result in that third album coming to fruition? Can’t say for sure, but we do already have a much of that mysterious third record already

in the can from when we left off. We had built a studio in Dion’s basement and recorded ourselves the way we really wanted to sound. Who knows if they’ll ever see the light but there were some great experiments in that sonic lab! I think we are mainly treating this as a one off celebration and not expecting anything more than a real cool time! You guys fell into the international spotlight pretty quickly back then, do you have a favourite memory or show from that time? There’s a lot of crazy memories from those wild and surreal years! This band took us to some incredible places, I think we were lucky to escape from some of them. It’s hard to have a favourite but I do remember a festival we played in New York on Randalls Island. It was organized by Steven Van Zandt, he plays in the E Street Band with Bruce Springsteen and had a killer radio show called ‘Little Stevens Underground Garage’. He was a fan of our band and put us on a bill with our heroes – Iggy & The Stooges, the Dictators, The Pretty Things, Bo Diddley and many more that had a huge influence on what we became. To be included in that company was pretty special and humbling. What can fans expect from you guys during these shows? We are very focused on making sure that these shows aren’t a nostalgia trip, and the fact that we’re all still active musicians means we’ll be able to pick up where we left off and push it further. We want to enjoy ourselves and the best way to do that is to be great. There will be no compromise!

The D4 at the YOT Club, Friday, February 16. The Chronicle has a double pass to giveaway. To go in the draw, email us with your name and contact number at info@raglanchronicle.co.nz by 5pm, Tuesday, 13 February.

Absolutely amazing antiques at our annual antics tournament Our Annual Ladies Day tournament has become one event ‘not to be missed’ according to those in attendance from afar. Ladies appeared from Te Kuiti, Te Awamutu, Kihikihi, Bereescourt, Hamilton Cosmopolitan, Frankton Junction, Taupiri, Huntly and of course our lovely local ladies. Imaginations were put to the test to create something with the letter ‘A’. Appearing before us were:- Angels, All Blacks, All Black travellers, Australians, Al Capone, Andre Agissi, Alphabet, Alphabetical, Alphabet Soup, Alzheimer’s, Aprons, Apaches, Amigos, Arabs, Artists, Avacado, Ascot Race Outfits, Automobiles, Athletes, Adidas, Adidas Allotments, Aunty, Aloha, Abalone, Arabian Princess in Disrepute, Arctophile (Teddy Bear Collector), Am I ?, Athena, and Anything Goes… and the antics of all the characters were carried on throughout the entire day. Amazing atmosphere. Well done Ladies. We played between the damp spells but the rain certainly did not dampen anyone’s spirits. Among the antics we played some serious bowls, after everyone had been selected into a team that did not include anyone from their home club. The winning team were Doreen Duffell (Te Awamutu), Alison Hadley (Frankton Junction), and Tricia Handcock (Kihikihi). In second place were Lyn Commins (Kihikihi), Heather Dalbeth (Raglan), and Margaret Stannard (Bereescourt), and in third place were Dawn Adams (Te Kuiti), Raewyn Chalklen (Bereescourt), and Margret Cavanagh (Te Awamutu). Congratulations to you all. The panel of judges (Men in the kitchen) chose the Best Dressed prizes. The first one chosen was Helen Clark (Frankton Junction) as an Arab, second was Rosalie Hart (Frankton Junction) as Alphabet Soup and third was Dawn Adams (Te Kuiti) as Andre Agissi… An Absolutely Adorable lot. Many thanks to our wonderful sponsors, Raglan Pharmacy and Lilypot Florist, for their continued support of our Annual Themed Tournament. TWILIGHT BOWLS: Our next round of Twilight Bowls starts next Tuesday 13th February, report in time of 5.30pm. Get your team of 3 together or come on down and we will put you in a team… see our advert elsewhere in the Chronicle …all enquiries to Bob 021 825 869. Happy Bowling, Eileen Stephens
