Dear Editor

I am in no doubt that there is a crisis in New Zealand’s classrooms. From my reading it is a multi-faceted crisis. Not enough pay, to much paper Fish n’ Chips work (administration, lesson Group Bookings plans, assessments and on and Inside/Outside Seating on), and too many troubled kids in the nations classrooms toamention wa o k u l o d gejust @gm i l .co m a few things. Stress levels are at an all time Open for Dinner Fri & Sat high. So at the time of writing from 5:30pm this letter the primary school Breakfast/Lunch 6 Days teachers and principals are Closed Tuesday going to strike this week. The first time in 24 years. Things have changed Open 7 Days a lot from when I started From 9:30AM Mon-Fri teaching in the late 70’s. I and 9AM Sat and Sun Waterfront dining doubt anyone is going to indoor and outdoor seating argue at the importance of recruiting and retaining high

quality teachers. But I for one have been wondering about the system they operate in. I think there are major systemic issues that I doubt a 15% or even 20% increase in salaries will fix. Which brings me to raising a critical question about the choice of schools parents in Raglan opt for. Why do so many parents enrol their children in schools outside of Raglan rather than at Raglan Area School? Is it time we had a community discussion about this and hear from these parents especially? It would seem to me no better time as the school recruits for a new Principal. Kind regards, Alan Vink

In December of 2017 I moved my mother into the Raglan Trust Hospital and rest home. She had lived with my family and I for the previous four and a half years. This was a really hard decision for me as I had hoped mum would spend her last days with us. During 2017 Mum stayed off and on for respite care and this made the transition easier for her and me as we got to know the staff and they got to know Mum. She settled in well and enjoyed the activities, the food and the staff that helped her with her daily living. Sadly she died last month on the 19th July 2018. She had become unwell and had a few weeks of extreme sickness before dying peacefully. The reason I am writing this is because I want you all to know

how incredibly grateful I am for the amazing support Mum and our family received during this time. Maree Burley, the new manager/owner and her staff were faultless in their care of my mother and their genuine concern for our family as well. They all became our family over this time and we cried, laughed and shared together as Mum journeyed through her last days. There are too many staff to name, but thankyou to all, for making this sad time so positively memorable. Special thanks also to Dr Fiona Bolden and her team at West Coast Health. If you are considering placing your loved one in a rest home/hospital, I strongly recommend staying local and supporting the Raglan Trust Hospital and Rest Home. Adele and Peter Van Weerden

Raglan students taking their anti-bullying message to the big screen

Also at H.G Webb House, Cnr Boundary & Victoria Streets, Hamilton

From left - Jaime Witters, Iemaja Hassell and Kayla Stockman-Bond hope their music video inspires people to stand up to bullies.

R

aglan Area School students are using the power of music to spread the anti-bullying message to their peers. From directing, acting, writing, producing and editing, members of the school’s junior health team have taken on headline roles in their music video Stand Up. Written by 11-year-old Jaime Witters, the song, which started life as a poem, takes a positive stance against bullying inviting the listener to stick up for those in need. “You have to be brave and help out other people,” she says.

Helped by guidance counsellor Betty Diprose, a former music teacher, Jaime wrote the music, sings the song accompanied by head boy Joel Newport on guitar and plays an upstander in the video - someone who stands up to bullies. The music video will be interspersed with Jaime and Joel performing the songs and vignettes depicting the plight of a marginalised student. The production crew includes videographer/director Iemaja Hassell and actors Kayla Stockman-Bond (victim), Josie Harder and Ayla Standley (bullies), Keira Hishon (upstander) and extras Danielle Macdonald and Ashton

Bicknell. Most of the crew are on the junior health team and Betty says the group started at the end of last year to spread positive messages with a uniquely student voice out amongst the student community. “It’s young people looking after their peers.” The music video has been entered into the Raglan Arts Film Festival Awards and the public can view Stand Up and the other RAFFA entrants on the big screen at the Old School during the film festival week from September 16-21, 10am-2pm. Correction to John Lawson interview from Issue #606 26th July 2018 : Do these groups need more people involved? How can people get on board? Yes! Ring, or email me (825 7866; johnragla@gmail.com), or look on-line for the groups; most are on http://www.raglan23.co.nz/directory/. When did you choose Raglan as your home? and why did you decide to settle here? Because Olivia told me to move here. My preference was to return a 100ha block at Te Akau to regenerating native bush. But she made a good decision.

Waikato District Council reviewing Raglan parking

Animal Health Column

W

O

aikato District Council is currently reviewing its parking restrictions in Raglan and WDC monitoring team leader Craig Birkett says Raglan parking is being looked at in consultation with various stakeholders.

To ensure better turnover of parking at the wharf, council is introducing new time limits and will continue with the regular patrols at the wharf to check for compliance with the existing time limits. He says the new time limits will need to be introduced into the bylaw through a council resolution and once this happens, signs will then be put up and the time limits will be enforced. Currently, there is no proposal to change the 48-hour limit for the boat trailer parking and markings at the wharf will be revised once the bylaw has been updated. Work has started this week to upgrade the Papahua Carpark (formerly Kopua) with an expected completion date in October. This

involves continuing the design that was completed in December 2016, and will feature a pedestrianfriendly raised concrete crossing to link the playgrounds and bridge path with Jo’s Takeaways and the campground. Work to upgrade parking at Joyce Petchell reserve is scheduled to begin at the end of August and this will include marking out car parking spaces to make better, more efficient use of the area. The emergency carpark next to the fire station will also have improved marking for carparking.

For Raglan People + their Pets

Being Responsible wning a pet is a big responsibility. We some times don’t consider all the aspects of pet ownership, we all love having our furry companions but are we getting them for the right reasons? Have you thought about your lifestyle, your living arrangements, costs which include food, vaccinations, flea and worm treatments, de-sexing, and possibly even hospital care? If you can’t afford all of these costs to provide your pet with a good happy healthy environment you should consider this, as it is a life time commitment. Too often in the veterinary profession we see animals lost, dumped, surrendered or with behavioral issues because people haven’t given full consideration to pet ownership. Every year in New Zealand there are thousands of unwanted animals euthanized because we didn’t think it through properly. One way we can be responsible pet owners is to get our animals desexed. In male animals this is called neutering or castration and involves removal of the testicles. In female animals this is called speying and is

a more involved procedure, removing the ovaries from the abdomen. This will stop your animals from reproducing which reduces numbers of stray animals, and also increases homes for animals from shelters. In the case of cats we in Raglan are aware of the effect of them on our wildlife population, and how fast they can reproduce! Research also shows that de-sexed animals can actually live longer. Desexed animals are generally less likely to get diseases and certain illnesses such as mammary cancer and uterine infections in females and prostate problems in males. Desexing commonly reduces behaviour problems such as roaming, aggression and urine marking in male cats and dogs. In females it prevents mating behaviour and false pregnancy. Reducing the desire to roam also reduces the risk of being in fights or a traumatic accident such as being hit by a car. Please be responsible when getting a pet, Talk to us today about the ins and outs of pet ownership- we are here to help! The Anexa Team

Don’t Feed Your Pet Junk Food! Not all foods are created equal so make sure your pet gets the best diet possible! As vets we cannot emphasise enough the importance of good nutrition for your pet, to ensure good health. Diets need to be tailored to the specific needs of your pet to ensure they lead a healthy life. There are many reasons why you should consider feeding your pet with pet food purchased from your vet. Advice: Your pet’s dietary needs may change as they grow and age. Your vet/ vet nurse can offer advice on the best nutrition for all life stages of your pet. Range: Vet-Only pet food offers a wide range of special diets, such as oral care, weight loss and hairball control. Tailor-made: Large-breed dogs have different nutritional needs than smaller dogs and therefore need different diet formulations. Breed specific foods are formulated to help control or prevent some of the typical health problems of each breed. Your vet also has access to prescription diets designed for specific health conditions. Much less mess to clean up: Quality food is highly digestible – therefore less mess and smell when your pet goes to the toilet. Weight management: Obesity is the most common form of malnutrition in the pets of today. Feeding pets an appropriate quantity of food is very important. High quality food tends to make the animal feel full and satisfied with a smaller quantity.

O

n Friday night friends and family gathered at the Old School Art Gallery to open a new exhibition entitled ‘Natural Gold’.

Well known artist Lois Brooks and first time exhibitor Leontien van der Beek have combined their individual talents to make an interesting and colourful show. Lois delves into the natural world around her and makes connections that fascinate and delight. Her women are soft and beguiling while nature dances through flowers and mountain.

Leontien's background in geology dominates in her colourful and strong landscapes and gives a raw insight into the structures made by tectonic forces. Bold colour with subtle brush work are rewarding to view. Both Artists are residents of Raglan. The exhibition at the Old School Gallery is open daily 10am-2pm till August 28th

Councillors Report

All students who took part in the mountain bike class went into the draw and the lucky winner was Luca Thompson, year 4.

We have all experienced our parking pressures - moving forward what will that look like in the coming years? There has been some excellent discussion and suggestions on how we can solve some of the more challenging areas, for example the wharf area, a little shuttle bus service with a specific predetermined route - perhaps there is an entrepreneurial soul in our community who would take this up? It has certainly been suggested before, but as yet on one has seen it as an opportunity. What are some other ideas around parking and connectivity? On that note, Bob MacLeod and I met with Fraser Nicholls, Maintenance Operations Manager, Waikato District Alliance at the wharf boardwalk to discuss the work being undertaken to remedy what is happening. A consultant has been engaged to assist with design and specifications for the boardwalk/seawell replacement, which should be completed in 3 weeks this will give a much better idea of what will be built and the timeframe for completion. District Plan Consultation The Proposed District Plan 2018 (Stage 1) is out for consultation until Tuesday 9th October, you can view it online or alternatively there are a number of copies available at our Raglan office on Bow Street. A District Plan is a document which sets out the guidance and rules on how you can use and develop your land. Every development project needs to be assessed under the Waikato District Plan to determine if resource consent is required, it is very important to have your say. LGNZ Housing 2030 Housing Symposium At the end of June I attended the LGNZ Housing 2030 Symposium in Wellington as the Community Board representative; ‘housing is a significant issue for all New Zealanders. We need to get housing Right for the sake of our communities’ social and economic futures. Unaffordable housing is having a negative impact on local economies, discretionary household expenditure and social well-being.’ We are feeling that in our own community here in Raglan, regularly we see posts from families or individuals looking for accommodation. Whaingaroa Raglan Affordability Project or WRAP will be sending out a householder survey this month to all homes in the census area of Raglan, please encourage all your networks to participate, even if they don’t feel they are impacted on by housing issues. If you would like to contact me my mobile is 0211 798256 or email lisa.thomson@waidc.govt.nz and from Friday 17th August, I will be starting my ‘Councillor Korero’ again 10.30 - 1.30 pm, every Friday.

Lewis Jones and BMX winner Luca Thompson.

Rugby This week we talked to rugby coach Paul Furniss. What team do you manage or coach? I coach the under 8s. How old are most of them? Most of them are 7 turning 8 this year. We have a few who are 6 turning 7 this year. How is the team going this season? The season is going great. The kids are having lots of fun. Learning about winning and losing.

Raglan 8th Grade rugby team.

What is the coach most proud of? As the coach I am most proud of the teams development. It is amazing hope much they learn in such a short time frame. They are also getting fit. We may not be the biggest team, but we can be the fittest.

Soccer

What is the focus for the rest of the season? Having fun and trying our best. It isn’t the world cup. It is all about the kids learning how to play as a team. Any shout outs to people who help out with the team? Shout out to the kids in the team. You are a great bunch of kids with huge futures ahead of you. Always remember it is hard work and not giving up that will get you places. RAGLAN JUNIOR RUGBY RESULTS // 4 AUGUST

The Orcas.

The Orcas have been diligent at training and in their games this year. Their coaches Yannis & Aaron have been outstanding at practice with the girls. They have worked on developing their roles into positions on the field and have had a great run with goal scoring. They have been enthusiastically cheered on from the sidelines by parents and whanau. Awesome work Orcas.

The Magic Pause You know that moment when your child has just done something for the millionth time and you’re feeling really annoyed and frustrated that they don’t seem to know that you’ve asked them a million and one times to stop? Why don’t they stop? Why aren't they listening? What on earth do I have to do to make them understand? This moment is where the magic pause can work. The magic pause interrupts the default response we can find ourselves having and can stop us from parenting in ways we regret later. Ruth Beaglehole is the founder of Parenting with Nonviolence (formerly NVP) and she is in Raglan this month to continue her life's work of supporting parents and anyone who works with younger human beings (children). She has spent her life considering the needs of children, seeking support and nurturing for them as full human beings, using the principles of respect, healing and connection. You may have already heard of Ruth and her work in Whaingaroa. We are hosting (with the support of Te Mauri Tau, Trust Waikato, Todd Foundation and Lotteries Waikato Community) two open sessions for people who are interested in this parenting philosophy and one session for people who have already attended a series of parenting classes. Please contact Te Mauri Tau 8257111 or Isabel 0273057638 for more information. Open sessions - Friday 10th August 9-11.30 am and Wednesday 15th August 7-9.30pm Support Group (for previous attendees) Thursday 9th August 7-9.30pm Classes are held at the Old School Arts Centre on Stewart Street. Please come early for a hot drink before we start. Gold coin entry please.
