Visiting friends in Raglan after seven months touring through the States and Europe, Mimi took the opportunity to perform and chat to Raglan Community Radio host Aaron Mooar. “I’m here on a two-week layover (in New Zealand) on my way to Melbourne to live,” she says. collaboration between Whaingaroa Environment Centre and the Old School Arts Centre three-years in the making has come to fruition with the installation of a Māui dolphin mural on the Te Kopua Reserve changing sheds recently.

The idea for an artwork in Raglan highlighting the plight of New Zealand’s most endangered dolphins was hatched three years ago when WEC approached the Old School about creating a Māui dolphin statue. Old School Arts Centre clay shed manager Susanne Prinz says they soon worked out that a statue wasn’t in the budget but a clay tile artwork was something they could afford. “We had just got our kiln which we fundraised for and we thought let’s do something with tiles.” The tiles were painted in 2015 and 2016 on Māui Dolphin Day and the tile mural was recently mounted on the changing room walls along with the WEC Māui dolphin poster competition winner’s artwork. Now aged eight, competition winner Nikau Pinfold was six when she designed the poster and is still a big fan of dolphins. “They are the smallest dolphin in the world,” she says.

“There’s only 63 left, that was at the last count.” She also did cartwheels through a World Wide Fund challenge to raise over $700 for an endangered species of her choice. “At the time I was doing 55 cartwheels because that’s how many Māui dolphins there were.” Susanne says the mural sits nicely beside the Department of Conservation Māui dolphin information which has also recently been installed . “It’s public art and it highlights the importance of the environment as well as bringing community-focused organisations to work together on a project.” WEC coordinator Stacey Hill says Whaingaroa catchment ﬂows into the west coast waters which are home to the Popoto or Māui dolphin, the smallest and rarest dolphin in the world. “Our community has a special afﬁnity for this endemic and critically endangered dolphin,” she says. “Māui dolphins live close to our shores and have a long and special relationship with tangata whenua. And despite their decline they are still swimming in our coastal waters.” “They are part of our community and we all need to look after each other.” Janine Jackson

Some facts about Māui dolphin: • They are the smallest of the world’s 32 dolphin species. • Māui and Hector's dolphins are the only New Zealand dolphins with a rounded black dorsal ﬁn. • They have distinctive grey, white and black markings and a short snout. • They are particularly vulnerable to decline as they have short lifespans - up to 20 years. • They may only be able to grow their population by 2% a year. That means that a population of approximately 55 can only increase by one per year.

The initiative has drawn a “great response,” they say, with up to 36 women venturing out to the fortnightly sessions. At their latest gathering last week Angelina Muru showcased the all-natural Arbonne range of makeup and skincare products to 20 or so local women and left ladies nights co-organiser Michelle Cobham looking “a million dollars”. The Monday night sessions follow on from a special general meeting of club members back in August. That motivated a few of the women to do something to counteract all the “negative feedback” over moves to sell the club premises. Last month iconic Raglan fashion label Scintilla got to showcase its latest creations, while Bronwyn

Lowe from The Herbal Dispensary advised on aspects of natural living including the eating of a surprising number of weeds for good health. “We want to highlight local businesses so ladies get to know what’s on around town,” says Gail Anderson, who along with Sharon Batt completes the organising trio. “There’s no club politics (here).” Coming up this month are an R18 ‘Pure Romance’ night showcasing sensual products, and the return of a try-before-you-buy sauces and condiments party plan. Longtime local Eileen Stephens reckons the evenings are a “great initiative” offering some time out and a sense of camaraderie. “And you can get driven home,” she adds, thanks to the club’s courtesy van. 2018 Panorama of Raglan calendar on sale

he Panorama of Raglan Calendar 2018 is now selling at the Raglan Bookshop on Bow St and Rivet Gallery in the old dairy factory. The price is still $15, as it was when the 2009 calendar started off the publication. The calendar is again full of photos of Raglan from various angles and of the countryside around, most taken by Raglan Ramblers on their weekly walks. This year is different, in that the calendar celebrates 25 years since Friends of Wainui Reserve formed, the ﬁrst meeting being on November 8, 1993. In 2017 the calendar contributed $1313.98

to fund their work at the reserve. There has always been a big overlap membership with Raglan Ramblers (formed in 1991), so most of the photos are taken during rambles in the countryside around Raglan. Friends of Wainui has work mornings on the second and fourth Monday of the month from 9am at the carpark about 3.5km out of town. Raglan Ramblers walks usually start at 9am on Wednesdays from the carpark beside the Fire Station. Friends of Wainui has planted a bit over 10 hectares of the 140 hectare council reserve with about 15,000 trees. Work is now mainly keeping tracks clear and weeds and pests under control. t’s an interesting way to do P.E.” Says Sophie, a Year 7 student. Every Wednesday the class rides down to the new pump track and spends an hour learning different bike skills (Thanks to Meridian for donating 10 bikes to R.A.S.)

This activity lets everyone feel conﬁdent on their bikes and improve their skills. An 11 year old student, Zara, said it was “an exhilarating experience.” Everybody agreed that it was a great way to have fun during school and that all classes should have a go! It was cool learning to ski with my friends.” Tai enjoyed it because it was a new experience and we got to stay in a lodge on the mountain. On the second day, a few students decided to go sledding, and took a trip up the chairlift to the top cafe. We all had lessons at different levels. Half the class had never skied or ridden a snowboard before, and by the end we were all shredding the slopes! On the way home, we went to Tokaanu hot pools and to the National Trout Centre, and everyone had a go at ﬂy ﬁshing! This was a fun and entertaining experience for everyone. Waitetuna School’s camps are amazing; we wonder what next year’s adventure will entail!

n October 26 and 27, Waitetuna School performed their school production: The Magical Faraway Tree. We started planning in Term 3, and held our auditions for characters in week three.

We adapted the story and added our own lands; Where the Wild Things Are (Junior Room), Dr Seuss (Middle Room) and Thriller and Grease Lightning (Senior Room). The junior classroom said they liked the characters and lands. It was their ﬁrst time being in front of a big audience and they were very proud. “We loved acting, learning to build conﬁdence and representing our school,” said main characters Katie, Eliza and Kahu. Ayla and Seren from the middle room added that they liked the dances. “We learnt how to work together and were very happy with the end result.” Lily wrote: “We worked together like a team and we did it,

but what matters most is that we had fun.” A parent of a former student said, “it was really amazing. The dances were so well-choreographed, and knowing some of those students that used to be shy have really come out of their shell.” It took lots of hard work and practice to get where we are now: amazing costumes, interesting characters, exciting adventures that left the audience on the edge of their seats, not to mention the dazzling dances, and a talented group of children and teachers that helped bring this production to life. You know what they say, “practice makes perfect”, and Waitetuna School deﬁnitely proved this!

The next big Waitetuna School and community event is the WindFarm Trail Run on November 25. We are looking forward to reporting on this big event.

Fifth anniversary of Raglan Karioi Trail increase time to exhaustion, time trial and training performance, and improve 5km running times. Francois will be supporting Russ’s research and testing the effects of menthol in this year’s race. “Real world tests are the ultimate in sports nutrition research as we see the effects where it matters most to the athletes… in the race,” said Russ. he Karioi Trail has recently been cleared by DOC, which means it’s all go for runners eagerly training for the next edition of the Raglan Karioi Trail (RKT). The fifth year of the mountain race will take place next month, Saturday, December 9. RKT is one of the few true mountain runs in Aotearoa. Traversing up (and back down again) the side of Karioi maunga, RKT offers a 24km solo start and 24km team race. Because it’s a new adventure for some, RKT also has an easier 10km run or walk that everyone can try, and there is a 2km kids run on the day as well.

Raglan’s Francois Mazet has been the driving force of RKT since its inception. With a background in sports events and management, his passion for adventure and the great outdoors led him to organising the first edition of the Raglan Karioi Trail in 2012. “It’s hard work on a challenging course, but what brings me back is Francois and his team,” said Kovo MacDonald from Taupiri, a two-time RKT winner. “The volunteers are amazing. The event is growing every year, but it’s still low key enough that there are no egos or elitists.” Chris Morrissey from Tauranga is a threetime RKT winner and seasoned trail runner, “The technical nature and steepness of the race really appeals to me,” said Chris. “The

first time I raced it I learnt to give it a bit more respect than I usually would for a 24km. The next year… I took 25min off my previous time. The final descent is muddy, technical and so much fun.” While event organisers are usually busy keeping things organised mid-event, Francois is taking to the trail this year. Francois has volunteered to participate in a study being done by Russ Best, a lecturer in Sports Nutrition and Biochemistry at Wintec, who is studying the effects of the absorption of menthol while you run. Menthol is a naturally occurring plant compound that stimulates nerves in the mouth, face and respiratory system to produce feelings of coolness, freshness and relaxation. Menthol has been shown to

rop Swap Raglan’s monthly exchange of garden and kitchen goodies went off with a bang last Sunday – Guy Fawke’s Day – and has proven such a cracker of an event that it will now be held fortnightly. Everything from homegrown leafy vegetables and heritage seeds to homebaked breads and potted pickles filled the trestle tables set up in the town hall supper room as locals set about swapping rather than shopping. Sharing produce – with no money changing hands – is a “fantastic” idea, says co-organiser Belinda Goodwin, who has seen numbers grow steadily over the past six months from 15 to 50-odd swappers. She relishes what she describes as the “abundance in our community”. And now, with the first of the fortnightly exchanges coming up, there’ll be even fewer visits to the supermarket, she predicts. “It’s amazing what people are able to grow in Raglan.” Belinda reckons surfers like herself

make good gardeners – not just because of their connection to the environment but because of their nutritional needs. Then there are the older people in the community who have embraced cropswapping. “They are the gems for us (younger ones) because they’re not on social media and give us all gardening tips.” Not that crop-swapping is solely about the garden. “Anything goes,” she says. There’s clean jam jars to trade, freshly made truffles, Israeli falafels with tahini dip, beeswax food wraps, even a sourdough starter for sharing. To celebrate the success of cropswapping in Raglan an end-of-year pot luck morning tea will be held after the December 3 meeting. And looking ahead to next year, there’ll be a harvest lunch in late March to which interested newbies can contribute without necessarily bringing crops to swap. This week we spoke to Raglan Area School's Head Girl, Lexi Holmes. You are head girl of Raglan Area School. What does this involve for you? I get to do a whole bunch of things that are going to prepare me for life after school. The three biggest things include planning the school ball which was a major success this year! Another major thing was the ANZAC speech which was really hard for me because public speaking definitely isn’t my forte. Also, at the beginning of the year I was fortunate enough to travel down to Akaroa with three other members of the leadership team to participate in a week long leadership camp. It was amazing and taught me so much that I was able to put into use throughout my year. What do you like about the role? I like the challenge of having to organise things/people, whilst not being too bossy at the same time, which my friends would know is hard for me haha. What are the challenges you face? Public speaking and having to throw things together last minute. What do you like to do out of school? I love playing rugby and it involves a lot of training, which in the winter takes up most of my spare time. In summer I love going to the beach and getting my tan on. Who do you look up to? I look up to all my teachers. They’re all so great in their different ways and are always willing to help anyone who needs it which I think is very important

What’s the benefit of living in Raglan? The beach!

How could Raglan be improved for it’s youth? More opportunities, like sports and events that they don’t have to travel into Hamilton for. Were you pleased with the election result? At least we don’t have Trump.

What is the biggest issue facing the world right now? There’s too many to just choose one but climate change is one that no part of the world can escape. The country you would most like to visit Greece!

Best book you’ve ever read? I did go through a bit of a Hunger Games phase. Best movie you’ve ever seen? Moana - I’ve seen it too many times to count

Have to ask this annoying question which I am sure you have heard 1000 times but what do you want to do next year ? Haha. I plan to study sports and exercise science at Waikato Uni while still living and working here in Raglan. Do you see yourself in leadership roles in your future? Lexi for prime minister 2021. Just kidding. But yeah, with all I've learned in my role this year, I definitely love it and will take advantage of any opportunities that may arise in my future.

KASM Fundraiser Steps Up!! After an overwhelming response and support from local businesses, the evening has taken on a new dimension!! The KASM fundraiser will take place this Friday, November 10 from 6:30pm at the Old School and feature Nom Kohara, a classical flamenco guitarist who will be kicking off the evenings events. Nom, a guitar teacher from Hamilton has generously offered to come out to support the evening and add authenticity and ambiance. Time frames have changed slightly with the event starting at 6.30pm, Nom playing from 6.45pm. Due to the generosity of the Raglan business community we have a full lineup for the auction. Julie Hanna has kindly offered her time for the charity auction which will start around 7.15pm. The movie is anticipated to start around 8pm.
