Going vegan means embracing the concept of non-violence, and in Aotearoa, which has the worst rates of family violence in the developed world, peace on the plate would be a great step towards peace in the home. As Pythagoras said some 2,500 years ago: "For as long as men massacre animals, they will kill each other. Indeed, he who sows the seed of murder and pain cannot reap joy and love." Tarot Talk

ello again from Tarot Talk - a weekly column in which I introduce a Tarot card for the week and provide a little information about it. I hope you continue to enjoy this space.

This card shows a man juggling two pentacles and he is having to juggle them to keep them in "in play". Behind him there are rolling waves showing that this "juggling" may be affecting him emotionally. Having two of anything and keeping them in play can create stress – two (or more) jobs, homes, relationships. Are you working to please others and neglecting yourself? Trying to juggle too much? When a new situation comes into our lives, everything has to be reshufﬂed as there is only so much room. There is a need to incorporate the old and the new as you strive to create balance. Sometimes it’s hard to know what to hold onto and what to let go. Reorganisation of time and energy is the key – choices have to be made and there may be a need to balance priorities. Balancing energy brings harmony and enables us to make decisions more easily. Having lots of factors to consider and account for can be a juggle but what makes them a joy rather than a burden is our attitude. Sometimes this card can indicate the breakup of a relationship/partnership and the subsequent splitting of resources. Ngarunui lifeguard’s selection for US exchange thought to be a first

aglan surf lifeguard Ella Boyens is California dreamin’ while busy slogging through the ﬁnal semester of a paramedicine degree in Auckland. Just a few weeks after the last of her exams in early June, the 21 year old will be winging her way to the States with fellow northern region surf lifeguard Sam Walters of Mairangi Bay. They’ll get to patrol the California coastline – also known as the Golden Coast – which includes the popular beaches of San Clemente, San Diego and Huntington. And they’ll be hosted by American families during their stay. Ella is believed to be the only one ever selected from the Raglan club for the sixweek exchange. She and Sam go as part of the Buddy Lucas Leadership Program which for nearly 50 years has delivered a structured learning experience aimed at “exceptional lifeguards” who show the ability to enhance surf lifesaving in this country. Exchange delegates participate in patrolling, practise with various types of rescue equipment and observe alternative beach management programmes and administrative structures. The lifeguard system is “really different” in California, Ella explains. The density of population along its coast means towers are spaced at 100 or 200 metres along the vast stretches of beach, with a guard or two patrolling from each. And lifeguarding there is a professional career choice while here it’s more of a volunteering role because of the shorter season.

Ella spent the past summer based at Ngarunui as a full-time paid lifeguard during the week, then patrolling as a volunteer at weekends. The local clubhouse with its dorms and other live-in facilities has become a something of a second home, she says. Although currently Auckland based, she’s

lived until recently at her family home in Hamilton while commuting either to Auckland University of Technology for paramedicine studies or to Raglan for surf lifesaving. Ella hopes to do a few more paid seasons at Ngarunui before working fulltime as a paramedic either in Auckland with St John Ambulance or with Wellington Free Ambulance. Her Bachelor of Health Science majoring in paramedicine is a tertiary level degree, she says, which also gives an “in” to ambulance services in Australia and to the London Ambulance Service. Ella believes her experience the past decade or so with Raglan Surf Life Saving Club has stood her in good stead for a career in paramedicine as there is some crossover. I love the community aspect of it from a volunteer perspective … that shared sense of wellbeing with a great bunch of people,” she says. “It’s an awesome family environment.” There have always been plenty of training courses on offer, too. While as a teen Ella enjoyed the club’s youth development programmes, when the Chronicle caught up with her on Monday she was still buzzing over a weekend leadership workshop – funded by Surf Life Saving New Zealand and its longtime corporate partner BP – she’d just completed in Wellington. In California her particular interest will be the medical training of its lifeguards and practices in place to keep them safe. “I want to bring that (know-how) back to our system and apply it to our lifeguard training,” she says. Although around $2000 for airfares will come from Surf Life Saving Northern Region, Ella needs to stump up with another $6000 to cover additional accommodation and travel costs. Treehouse project to get kickstart

Day of title defences at Manu Bay

t was a day for the defending title holders at the Rip Curl Pro presented by Corona Last Saturday, May 5, as local hero Billy Stairmand and Whangamata’s Ella Williams defended their titles in a fiercely competitive day of surfing. Williams made it four event wins in a row while Stairmand claimed his fifth title at the event over a span of twelve years. Many forecasts were for the points of Raglan to be flat for the final day of the event but the day dawned with clean lines marching into the bay. Swells of up to a metre rolled through during the morning with glassy conditions, but the waves slowly decreased in size and intensity until heat times had to be lengthened to allow competitors enough opportunity in their heats and finals. Stairmand finished with a 13.0 point heat total after taking an early lead in the 30 minute final, defeating Luke Cederman (Rag) who finished runner up, Nick White (Mnt) who finished in third and Daniel Farr (Tara) in fourth. “I am super stoked. I was really looking forward to this contest after last weekend and I am happy to finish the season with a win here this weekend, get the cash and get on my way to Japan,” said Stairmand, who is eyeing up international events in the next month. “I am going to go home after this and book for Japan and sort accommodation,” he said. Stairmand has also been fundraising and has a Givealittle page to help him get to more international events after Japan. The result was a turnaround from last weekend when Cederman got one over Stairmand but he was glad to get one back this weekend. “Luke was trying to get in my grill all last weekend and we were chipping away at each other. This weekend he went away and I wanted to do my own thing, but out there in the final, he was keen to battle again, so it is good to get one back on him”. Surfing New Zealand

How did you come to have your flowers available at Supervalue? Supervalue was the one place I always wanted to stock with my flowers, and as the saying goes "patience is a virtue". Margaret from Lilypot had been stocking them with her flowers over the past years, and with her doors closing, she recommended my flowers to them unbeknownst to me, which was an incredibly kind gesture and for which I'm very grateful. So, I showed them my work, and here I am. How long have you been working with flowers? What is your general style with flowers? I've been playing around with flowers all my life, from my Mum’s wonderful garden to my late, beautiful Nan’s. And after working as a garden designer in Taupo

for years, when I moved to Raglan about 10 years ago, I decided to follow my dreams to become a florist and did my diplomacy in floristry at Wintec in Hamilton. As for my style, I would be described as anything from ‘rustic to sophisticated’, depending on the occasion/the bride etc. I do have a passion for our amazing foliage in this country (the different greens and textures) and I love to incorporate it in all my work, if and where I can. What can we expect to see available on the Leef stand every week? I want to offer a wide variety of colour and flowers/foliage in my bouquets, keeping them fresh, natural and different. Year 7/8 students to walk the length of New Zealand How can you help? Event assistance and sponsorship This is an ambitious event that will really push the students to their limits and when completed, can be considered an enormous accomplishment that they can be proud of. In order to help them reach their target, students will need assistance from our community. Matua Jason is looking for willing people to join the working group to assist with jobs such as: advertising, event management, ﬁeld setup, marshalling, food/beverages for participants and/ or for sale, and sponsorship to help with food/ beverages. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. If you’re interested in helping, the timeframe to get everything organised is very tight so please get in touch as soon as you can to let Jason know of your willingness to be involved.

elcome to the Raglan Netball Club Inc. We are very proud to be able to offer Raglan and the wider areas competition and social netball.

With the vision of never turning children away, this year we have ﬁve junior teams and one senior team from year 5-6 to year 13. In previous years, we have been known as Raglan Sports Netball Club. At the end of 2016 we went through the procedure to change it to Raglan Netball Club Inc society. We'd love for you to come support the kids. Please check out our Facebook page for game times.

A big thanks to everyone involved in the extra complicated juggling act of getting teams together this year. Once again, we're struggling to fit everyone onto the domain with substantial parts of the field still vulnerable to flooding. We were hoping to have some major work done this year but it's not an easy site to work, so this has had to be delayed while a new strategy is developed. Despite losing two years’ worth of players who moved up to youth football in Raglan Area School has two football teams 2018, the junior club is still bursting at the seams with, for unknown reasons, a huge this year with the population bulge of enthusiastic amount of 6-year-old boys arriving this girls born around 2005 helping to create the year! school's first ever female football team.

Launch of Kotui and e-collection at Waikato district libraries

aikato district library users are in for a treat with the installation of a new library management system this month. Customers will see a much more user friendly interface and improvements to our collection.

Kōtui is a new library management system that a number of other councils around the country use and soon, Waikato district will also be able to reap these beneﬁts. Kōtui will provide a better service for our customers and an integrated system which will mean you can access our collection from the comfort of your own home at any time of the day. “Currently, Waikato district library users can only access physical books during operational hours. You’ve told us that you want to access resources outside of business hours. Kōtui will mean you can do just that – you’ll be able to access a range of books, audio and magazines whenever you want,” Customer Delivery Manager Angela Parquist says. Installing this new software will mean our library systems will be unavailable on 15 and 16 May. We apologise for this inconvenience but you are welcome to still browse the collection and use our spaces over these two

days. Council services will still operate as normal. The new system and e-collection will be launched on 17 May with celebrations taking place at every library site excluding Meremere, who will host their event when they open on 18 May. Exciting events have been planned by our libraries to mark this occasion including musical talent, guest speakers, special Toddler Time sessions, author visits plus much more. Pop along to your local library or give us a call to ﬁnd out what each site has planned. To celebrate digital access, we’ll also be running a competition with six Samsung tablets up for grabs. Whaingaroa groups talk biodiversity and Raglan’s growth at field day

h a i n g a r o a community groups will feature in a Waikato Biodiversity Forum field trip and information day on Friday May 18.

Held at various locations in Raglan, the groups will be discussing their projects in relation to the forum topic - how can we enhance biodiversity in a growing town? Waikato Biodiversity Forum event organiser, Sam McElwee, says the field trip brings together a crosssection of the many Raglan groups involved in a variety biodiversityrelated projects and initiatives to discuss the past, present and future of biodiversity in Whaingaroa. “We all know that Raglan is growing. How can we do this in the best way possible for our environment?” Kopua Beachcare’s Angeline Greensill will begin the day followed by Rangitahi Peninsula

Development’s David Peacocke, Jacqui Bell and Amber Rolling, Fiona Edwards from Whaingaroa Harbour Care, Bexie Towle from Karioi Project, Xtreme Zero Waste relationship manager and founding member Rick Thorpe and Solscape’s chief executive Phil McCabe. An independent voluntary organisation, the Waikato Biodiversity Forum is a partnership between research and management agencies, iwi groups, private landowners, communities and projects that promote native biodiversity in the Waikato region. Recovery with Irma: My story part one Recovery with Irma is a new opinion column with Irma Schutte. Irma supports men and women who are ready to create their own alcohol-free happiness. She offers her clients a holistic and unique approach by combining her experience as a clinic homeopath (British Institute of Homeopathy), certified health coach (Institute for Integrative Nutrition) and recovered addict (sober since July 2015). Her work on holistic addiction recovery, mental health and natural medicine has been featured in popular publications such as Elephant Journal, NZ Women’s Weekly, Sivana East and more.

I had a problem with drinking before I realised I had a drinking problem. Why? Because of the way I felt when I was sober. I lived and breathed a holistic and healthy lifestyle. All except for one thing - alcohol. On the outside, it seemed like I was the poster child for natural medicine and wellbeing. On the inside I was barely keeping it together. I drank... and not just occasionally. I drank daily. I was trying desperately to escape my discomfort and outrun my pain. Wine time was my down time. I knew I needed it to relax and feel better about myself. This awareness always bugged me. Daily life looked something like this - wake up, feel worthless, fuzzy, hungover, go to work, promise myself that tonight I wasn’t going to drink, get to 5pm, give in to the cravings, listen to my excuses, grab a bottle of wine after work, go home, turn on my music, start cooking, finish the bottle before dinner, hide the evidence from my boyfriend, try my best to not look too tipsy when he got

home, eat, have a shower, pass out for a few hours, wake up at 3am with a dry mouth, anxious mind, heavy heart and repeat the ongoing cycle the next day. Throughout the weekends I would drink even more and spend most of my day-time on the couch recovering. This became the longest guilt-trip of my life. I felt lost without alcohol. The idea of not having it was overwhelming and yet wanting to stop was all I could think about. In the end, all it took for me to go from this daily functional ‘takethe-edge-off-alcoholic’ drinking pattern to a hardcore 24/7 drinker was the experience of grief and loss. Without getting into the details, in 2015 my boozy snowball had gotten so big and out of control that I was unable to function. In the final six weeks of my drinking life, I drank from morning to night...just to survive and feel ‘normal'. I never thought it would happen to me, but it did. I had my last drink on 25 July 2015. If I wasn't going to end my relationship with alcohol, it was going to destroy me. Now that I've given up alcohol, I feel like my inner and outer reflections are more aligned. I've one less thing to be ashamed of and I'm learning how to be with it all...the ups and the downs of life without repression or resistance.

A work in progress! Not having alcohol has been the single most important thing I've done to enhance the quality of my life. And I'm nothing special. I'm just like you - someone who wants to feel loved and accepted. Someone who's doing her best to not be so afraid of life and it's uncertainties and unknowns. Next time I’ll share with you what I did to quit and what it takes to enjoy an alcohol-free life.
