way of doing things is too much like hard work, however, we can't lay all the blame on incompetent workers, some of the blame must be shouldered by the supervisors/managers of WDC. Surely bells must be ringing in their heads as to why they are getting copious calls to the same signs month after month. Yes, I have written to the council voicing my disgust at this gross waste of ratepayers money but it would appear it is like water off a ducks back. What can we as ratepayers do about this? I don't know the answer. The council are a law unto themselves, if they want more money they just increase our rates. As for me? well I am nearly 70 years old and getting too tired for this sort of rubbish, I just hope that someone younger with a bit more up and go will take up the cudgel and hold the council more accountable for their actions, or lack of. ‘Organic’ plots as grower-author branches out in diverse directions
T
Clyde downtown with his first published book.
eacher-cum-author Clyde Sutton reckons the writing of his first published book ‘William’ was an “organic” process – much like the growing of trees on his 16 hectare Te Mata lifestyle block where he and wife Diane have brought up their two sons. No surprise then that the couple have set up a mini-publishing company called Living Tree Press to handle the distribution and marketing of this and a few other books Clyde has on the go, the second of which is already with an independent editor up in Auckland. Clyde plants trees simply to better the world, he says. “They’re such an asset to the planet.”
And the fourth-degree black belt aikido enthusiast writes books to “reflect my philosophy on life”. ‘William’ is a 170-page work of fiction that doesn’t fit into any genres, Clyde explains. It’s a cross between social comment and sci-fi in which he has used his extensive knowledge of aikido – a nonviolent, “intuitive” way of living – to trace the life of a soldier suffering post-traumatic stress disorder after serving in Iraq. The American army veteran has a breakdown, practises meditation and experiences an altered consciousness which changes his world. He also falls into a reluctant friendship with a young woman who helps him overcome his personal demons. Clyde says he clearly dreamt the start
and end of the book – “almost like my subconscious” – but it took a long time before that dream looked like a book plot. It was about a 15-year process, he calculates, from the time his sons were preschoolers until they were in their teens. He used to carry the draft around on his computer while commuting from his Waimaunga Road farmlet as a teacher at Fraser High School and as an aikido instructor at a dojo in Hamilton. The plot grew organically, says Clyde; it had its own momentum and kept “surprising” him by going in different directions part-way through from what he expected. “It’s not formulaic.” Pulling the whole manuscript together a few years ago took a lot of time and expense, the 60 year old master’s graduate adds, and he wasn’t happy with the end result. Koehler Books publishing company in Virginia had put an American slant on Clyde’s Kiwi style so he had it re-edited recently with PressGang, reputed selfpublishing experts in New Zealand. He says the story is both complex, in that it has a double or parallel timeline, and simple in that it’s a mindful read – with William seeking solace in the Japanese discipline of aikido – rather than being purely for entertainment. Clyde’s second book – which is again social commentary but minus the sci-fi – is now with PressGang, a third book is “in abeyance” and his fourth is shaping up. It’s called ‘The Silent Wizard’ and is based on a “celtic” version of Mt Karioi. His inspiration? “I love New Zealand and the bush.” “And Raglan,” he adds, having lived here the past 20 years. Edith Symes *’William’ is stocked locally at Atamira and Raglan Book & Gift Centre.

id you know scientists estimate that by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the world's oceans? About half of all plastic produced is for single-use or disposable items such as packaging. Choose to refuse single-use plastic this July by signing up for the Plastic Free July challenge at www.plasticfreejuly. org. By bringing your own reusable shopping bags, remembering reusable coffee cups and water bottles, and avoiding pre-packaged fruit and vegetables you can help make a difference. happens reassuring caregivers and family is a major task for the Care Facilitators as well as directing them to the appropriate agencies. The first port of call is often the General Practitioner, followed by the hospital system and then WINZ. Music, singing, dancing and interacting with pets and children are some of the ways that can help provide quality of life. Whether the elderly are cared for in their own home or in a rest home, being socially connected is good for physical, mental, and spiritual wellbeing and happiness in later life. There are lots of groups in Raglan that provide social connections and physical and creative activities. The Raglan Community House is open six days a week and provides many voluntary services. Volunteering is a good way to get involved.

In July, the guest speaker at the Raglan Disability Support Group was Jennie Pizer who was a nurse for 50 years, mostly working with the elderly. She described changes in the last few decades and how age care is now more geared to the individual client or resident rather than the convenience of the care facilities. Loneliness, helplessness and, boredom, were three of the main issues. Falls were one of the biggest problems for those living on their own and often led to the elderly being taken into care. he 1970s was the theme for this month’s meeting of Jane Ritchie’s book group. A few got dressed up in 70s’ hippie chic to glam punk. We celebrated the brown and orange look, flares and head bands. Afternoon tea followed the theme with all the snacks coming on toothpicks – devils on horseback,
cheese with pineapple, nuts etc. Seventies’ classics discussed included Ronald Hugh Morrieson’s The Scarecrow, Marilyn French’s The Women’s Room, A Breed of Women by Fiona Kidman, Richard Bach’s Jonathan Livingston Seagull and colourful local histories. Talking about The Female Eunuch, Jane remembered attending the famous 1972 lecture in the Auckland
Town Hall where Germaine Greer surprised everyone by saying “bullshit”. The book group started about eight years ago, adopting a specific theme every second month and alternating with free choice. Other themes have included NZ authors, cooking, biographies, childhood favourites and South American authors or topics. Meeting at members’ homes or the Old School we each talk about two to three books we’ve read, including whether we’d recommend the writer/book or not. There are a wide range of tastes in the group so we hear and talk about a variety of books (fact, fiction, fantasy and fun) with respect and laughter. A recent attempt at rediscovering the Classics had some surprising results. Some just found them too outdated and dense to read while others preferred the originals to the modern retellings. Like the 70s we like having freedom of choice - appreciating suggestions while not having to read a set book. There are plenty of books to go around – let’s just encourage as much reading as we can. You won’t find us reading books online. “Books are Not Dead. Long live the Book!” With thanks to the Raglan Library, In my Good Books, the Hamilton Library, the Raglan Old School Arts Centre and our patient (or not) partners and friends. Lauren

Tarot Talk Hello again from Tarot Talk - a weekly column in which I introduce a Tarot card for the week and provide a little information about it. I hope you continue to enjoy this space.
T
his week's card is The Hanged
Man.
The Hanged
Man indicates a need to let something go or to look at everything from
a
different
perspective. Turn something on its head and look at it from a new angle. It can also indicate the need to be patient and not to force anything. Things generally are in a state of limbo or “animated suspension”. This is the card of “Let go and let God”. The Hanged Man tells us that the best approach to a problem is not always the most obvious. When we most want to force our will on someone or something that is when we should back off. It is a card of being in a state of suspension – literally hanging about. When we most want to have our own way, that is when we should give way. When we most want to act, that is when we should wait. Be patient. Matters will resolve themselves in the right time and in the right way at the right time. More information about this card can be found on my Tarot Talk Facebook page https:// www.facebook.com/tarottalknz/ Tarot readings and tuition are available by appointment. Txt or phone Chrissy on 027 6644261.

Netball: Team Profile: Karioi Miniferns
T
he Karioi Miniferns play in the year 5 netball tournament in Hamilton every Thursday afternoon. We have eight players in our team ranging from year 3 to year 6 and our players come from Te Akau, Waitetuna and Te Uku schools. These factors alone are a challenge for any team, but the Miniferns have overcome those challenges to become a real team that is learning to train together and support each other. Our players are very different developmentally. Some are competitive, some creative, others are playful and full of energy, some are gentle but skillfull and all belong on court. We have a really supportive team manager, Lisa Berejoni, who bravely stepped up and

volunteered to manage and also umpire all the games. My goal as coach is to help the Mini’s develop good basic netball skills and then let them play. It’s very easy to interfere with children’s sport, but now is the age for them to be free to experiment with what works and what doesn’t. I also hope they will see that sport is something that everyone can do - everyone has to work at it and we can have a lot of fun along the way. The Mini’s are developing every week and Lisa and I and our wonderful team of families who support the Miniferns will enjoy watching them grow. Abbie Neems (Coach)
