Dear Editor I have become a bit of a wandering gypsy on Sunday mornings. Twice recently I have intended to go to Church of the Latter Day Saints but ended up at Surfside, (the best attended Church I have visited in Raglan). But my home Church seems to be the Union Church. I am particularly fond of the disorganised procedure. It feels more human than over ritualised services. Life is full of the unexpected I hope I am not offending other congregations - each to his or her own. Some bias towards Union might come from the positive feedback I got from parishioners there, regarding my letters. One suggestion was that I write about women and their ways. However, I pointed out that the Chronicle is sensitive to any hint of impropriety so I have become cautious on this matter. But to get to a more serious topic; the whole business of Faith is quite odd when you think about it. Why do we believe,

despite any concrete evidence, of anything beyond the basic scientific picture of birth, life and death like any other animal. We could refer to the Bible story which is the basis of Faith. Who wrote it and how reliable are their sources? We have to admit that there is no hard evidence. There is just a feeling (or not) that there is more to human life than scientific facts explains. Apart from the occasional reports of miracles there is no evidence. It's like falling in love, and even that is not always enduring. It's all a matter of faith. Next week: Lady legs (just joking). he familiar face of Kelly Gifford will be missing at the Agricultural Group Day in Te Uku this weekend, but there’ll be a new award in recognition of the man who passed on his passion for the annual event to generations of school children. The special ribbon will honour the work of the longtime local, who recently passed away, in ensuring the “very stringent” standards that govern the Raglan Boys and Girls Agricultural Group – now in its eighth decade – are continuing to be met. “Kelly did so much each year,” fellow organiser and Raglan Area School teacher Sue Brown told the Chronicle of Kelly's remarkable ability to relate to children caring for pet calves, goats and lambs who have kept the country tradition alive. Sue described him as a “quiet, loyal, steadfast” supporter of what’s commonly called Calf Club, first through his own

children and grandchildren and then with all the keen young pupils with competing farm animals from the district’s four schools. Te Uku, Te Mata and Waitetuna have this week each held their own Calf Club days in the lead up to Saturday’s official Group Day in which the best of the best will be judged. Kelly – who was a one-time judge himself and patron of the group – would be sorely missed, said Sue. She would always breath a sigh of relief many a time when he would quietly turn up on the field to help, even when he was into his 80s. “He kept us (the team of organisers) sorted.” A stringent set of rules have to be upheld. “He’d make sure our measurements were correct in setting up the calf and lamb pens, and that the flow between events happened as it should.” Well before any judging, however, Kelly visited the local schools to instruct participants in the proper care and preparation of their pets. “It’s quite a procedure to get your animal ready,” Sue adds.

So while the Gifford Family Cup will be presented as always on Group Day for the overall and supreme champion calf, the new ribbon this Saturday – to be presented by a member of Kelly’s family – will acknowledge a child that has shown a particular passion or bond for their pet. As Kelly’s daughter Maree Yorston, another longtime stalwart of Calf Club, says of the ribbon to honour her father’s work: “It’s to show the love for the animal … that’s what he had.” Local school principals also acknowledged the work that Kelly has done over the decades at a recent meeting about the Agricultural Group Day. “Kelly was a very special man,” summed up Te Mata principal Pam Quirke. “His contribution to our communities was really beautiful.” Edith Symes Raglan Boys and Girls Agricultural Group Day will be held at Te Uku School Saturday October 15 at 10am. There will be food stalls run by the fundraising committee.

Trust won't be building community-owned medical facility

est Coast Health Charitable Trust will no longer be building a $3 million communityowned healthcare facility as a plan change sees West Coast Health clinic building the facility independently. Trust chairperson Fiona Edwards says the trust had secured a site, drawn up building plans and received positive support from various organisations to be involved in the development of one large multipurpose medical facility in Raglan but then West Coast Health made the decision to go independent with a developer. “Things happen, you have to be philosophical about these things. Everybody did it with the best of intentions,” says Fiona. “It’s a timeframe thing. If they had more time … we were taking too long, they needed to know it was going to happen.” It had been hoped to have the building completed by 2018. The trust needed to fundraise close to $3 million for Project Build It, which would have seen a wide range of healthcare services, including West Coast Health, district health

board nurses, midwives, and a pharmacy, under one roof. It was also hoped that the medical centre would become accredited to provide training for health professionals, and thereby encourage more doctors, nurses, physiotherapist, pharmacists and other health professionals to work rurally. The idea behind having a communityowned medical centre was that the community could charge health professionals an affordable rent in return for quality service and low-cost patient fees. It had been hoped that the proposed model would become the way of the future for other rural communities in New Zealand. “We just couldn’t bring the deal together,” says Fiona. In November last year, the trust had pledges for $855,000 towards the project. “The money was pledged so not in our bank accounts.” Banks had approved loans for the development, Fiona says. The trust had secured a site on the corner of Bow St and Wi Neera St after its offer for a property in Wallis St, across the road from West Coast Health, was turned down. It is

understood that West Coast Health has since bought this property and will build a new clinic there. Fiona says the trust has had to renege on the Bow St site. She says there is no ill feeling towards the medical centre. They are amazing and do an amazing job, she says. West Coast Health Charitable Trust was set up to support the Prime (Primary Response in Medical Emergency) service, which ended in March because it didn’t have enough volunteers, and to support projects that would provide low-cost healthcare solutions to Raglan residents. “The vision and direction of our trust remains the same and we will keep working to provide options for after-hours medical assistance in the community,” says Fiona. “We would like to acknowledge the wonderful support and contributions we have received from the community and volunteer groups.” West Coast Health practice manager Michelle Meenagh says the clinic will release a statement at a later date relating to its future plans. The kitchen not only supplies the meals for its 20-something residents but also has volunteers deliver Meals on Wheels daily throughout the community. Building relationships with the families of residents is a big part of the manager’s job, Cherry told the Chronicle. Birth Aotearoa's H ome national hui is being hosted in Raglan this weekend. The national hui represents an opportunity to celebrate, promote and support homebirth.

Homebirthing honours the strength and intelligence of women and their families to birth safely and naturally at home. Many babies have been safely born at home under Karioi’s watchful gaze, and there are generations of homebirthing families in our community's midst! Home Birth Aotearoa has members from all

over the country. The national hui is held in spring, and its main purpose is to share knowledge and inspiration from homebirthing families, midwives and anyone in the home community who has an interest. There is an open potluck meal happening on Friday, October 14 at 5.30pm at the Bible Camp, 578 Wainui Rd. This is for all Raglan people who love and support homebirth, or are otherwise interested, to come together and share stories over good kai. Locals are also able to attend the hui but places are limited anyone keen on coming please email waikato@homebirth.org.nz.

The national hui follows tikanga Māori principles and includes a kei a wai ceremony to open, and times for korero from attendees. Local midwives and women will have opportunities to share some of the inspirational work they are doing to support whānau in birthing their babies in a way that is safe, healthy and culturally strengthening for each family. Let’s Grow is holding its third annual art auction at Rock-it on Saturday with some 30-40 pieces going under the hammer. Let’s Grow owner Aaron Zaini says last year a dream catcher created by the kids was auctioned off for

about $350, and a mother who wanted to buy her own child’s artwork got outbid by someone else. The art auction is held as a fundraiser to give back to the community. This year the proceeds will go to the Raglan Volunteer Fire Brigade. “We like to give back to the community,” says Aaron. “The job those guys do (the firefighters), it’s priceless really. It takes a special kind of person to do that job and they don’t always get the recognition they deserve.” Last year’s proceeds of about $2000 went to the Raglan Toy Library. Aaron says the big item up for auction this year is a large Viking boat made from cardboard. “It’s really cool.” Other items include masks and portraits, and the all work is currently on display in Rock-it. Aaron says Let’s Grow’s teachers and assistants are all really

encouraging of the children and their artwork, and many are artistic in their own right. Simon Willisson used to make movie sets and has worked with stars such as Tom Cruise. “He has a good eye. That’s why we have such a cool playground.” As for the 100 or so children on the books at Let’s Grow, they love creating the art and attending the auction. “It’s a real family event,” says Aaron. “The kids love it, they have a really good time.” The auctioneer on Saturday is Julie White from Ray White Real Estate Raglan. The event, which is open to the community, is at 3pm at Rock-it Cafe, with the auction beginning at 3pm. Everyone and their wallets are invited. awards for their yoghurt after winning the Micro Business of the Year Award in the Waikato Business Awards. Tesh Randall and Seb Walter, co-founders and owners of Raglan Coconut Yoghurt, found out last week that they had won their third award, although the official awards night isn’t until November. Last year the couple won the Gourmet Award at the NZ Food Awards and the Bite People's Choice Award.

Tesh says she and Seb were stoked to win the Micro Business of the Year Award because they were told that there were about 66 entries in that category. The award recognises excellence in organisations with an annual turnover of up to and including $1 million per year, and which have “achieved overall significant growth or performance as a result of effective planning and delivery”. Tesh says they had to answer an extensive list of questions and then, once shortlisted, two judges came out to Raglan to interview them in their kitchen, check out the facilities and taste the yoghurt.

“They seemed really impressed with what we’ve created, and loved the taste of the yoghurt, so we had our fingers crossed.” Tesh and Seb were one of two Waikato Business Awards winners announced at FMG Stadium in Hamilton last week, with the remaining award winners to be announced at the official Awards Gala Night in Hamilton on November 4. They won four tickets to the awards as part of their prize, and also the production of a professional video about their business. Tesh says winning awards helps get recognition. “People see it in the paper or magazine and think hmm, maybe I'll need to try that! It also adds more credibility to our brand and is fantastic marketing for Raglan as a foodie destination and entrepreneurial hub.” The couple moved into a new kitchen at the old Bow Street Motors premises earlier this year after outgrowing the Old School Arts Centre’s commercial kitchen. “The new kitchen has been great,” says Tesh. “We had to build another chiller unit a couple of months ago to keep up with demand and now we lease the whole building, not half.” Raglan Coconut Yoghurt employs eight part-time and two fulltime staff. “We are pretty busy at the moment but still finding time for the occasional beach walk or surf so all is well.” Raglan Coconut Yoghurt is also a sponsor of KASM’s fight against Trans-Tasman Resources’ bid to mine the seabed off the Taranaki coast. As ocean lovers, Tesh and Seb are pledging to donate 50 cents from every big jar of yoghurt sold throughout October. “It's our bestselling product so we're hoping to raise around $2500.” Inger Vos

Bohemian Gypsy opens on Bow St

Three Little Birds has migrated from their end of Bow St home to a new nest just up the road, now called Bohemian Gypsy. Tony, owner of Three Little Birds and the newly established Bohemian Gypsy worked with Saras, who played a key role in guiding the artistic direction of the new shop. The past few months have been spent painting and moving into the space, bringing a fresh new look to the friendly Bow St block. The pair had help from the community in prepping the shop, including some assistance from the talented Campbell of XZW, and a pair of French elves who showed up in the knick of time to help Tony and Saras finish the shop for Friday’s big opening. Not only did they provide some helping hands, but the pair played some bohemian inspired music throughout the opening. The newly expanded shop can be accessed through two entrances now: the front of Bohemian Gypsy in Bow Street and the Three Little Birds entrance found in Volcolm Lane, through the Roll Up yard. Tony is excited to offer the new concept of Bohemian Gypsy to the community and travellers alike. Bohemian Gypsy will feature upcycled pieces, handmade items and eclectic pieces from all around the world. Three Little Birds will continue in its original form, highlighting locally handmade pieces. Sundaise: Small community Update on Freedom festival making a big noise Camping Bylaw

The Freedom Camping Bylaw 2016 was adopted by the Waikato District Council at its meeting last month and will come into force on Monday.

As summer makes its approach, so too does the buzz around summer festivals. With a whole bunch of Raglan talent taking part in the Sundaise festival, check out what's on offer! Sundaise, located on private farmland in the Waikino Valley, Karangahake Gorge, Waikato, is one of the few festivals around to maintain a core vision to stay small yet retain the same high-quality production standards expected of an international event. Raglan involvement includes the likes of DJs Jamin-i and Dubsonic as well as the creative duo of Tracey Beschelt and Tim Turner with their prop and set design. “We only sell 1000 tickets so it’s big enough to be exciting but small enough to connect with people,” explains creative director, Rachael Stanway. “What I love most about creating this event is connecting people and helping people create connections with each other.” The three-day family-friendly event, to be held March 10-12, is a festival of music, arts

and sustainability, offering a full programme of performances, installations, a kids’ zone and workshops focused on these central themes. However, it is the styling which makes Sundaise truly unique and sought after on the festival circuit. “My styling is eclectic, bohemian and a little bit quirky,” says Rachael. “We have different stages and areas to the festival so I have the bigger picture in mind in terms of visuals, lighting and the event styling - I use a lot of lamps and other vintage props.” Sundaise 2017 is already shaping up to be the high quality, arty event that many stumbled across for the first time in 2015. Established in 2011, next year’s event promises to have even more hands-on workshops, more creativity and more music collaboration than ever before. The BYO event also includes free camping, with many visitors taking the opportunity to swim in the river running through the property during their stay or explore the nearby bushland and native tracks. The Raglan Chronicle will be operating from a new space above the Good Times store in Wainui Rd from this coming Monday. The current owners of the Chronicle, Dave and Jacqui Smith, took over the paper from Stephen Frew in 2006 when it was run from the office in front of Bow St Motors. It was

then moved to the current space next to the laundromat about a year later. The Chronicle team is looking forward to entering a brand new space as we also look to change up some of our existing services. Freedom camping is permitted on any council-controlled land unless it is prohibited or restricted. The bylaw prohibits freedom camping in Raglan’s CBD, Wainui Rd, at the Raglan Wharf, Lorenzen Bay Rd, Sunshine Rise, Greenslade Rd, Riria Kereopa Memorial Drive, From 2 Cliff St to 1 Puriri St, Kopua Domain, Ngarunui Beach Reserve, Earles Pl, Tohoro Cl and Calvert Rd in Whale Bay, and the Manu Bay reserve and surrounding area. It is also prohibited in Papanui Point car park, Swann Access Rd, Ruapuke Beach Rd and Bridal Veil Falls car park. Freedom camping is only permitted in a vehicle that has been designed for camping and which has a toilet that is secure and in working order. WDC general manager customer

support Sue Duignan said there would be patrolling of prohibited areas in the summer period to ensure compliance with the bylaw. There is a $200 fine for those who break the rules. “Waikato District Council plans to take a proactive approach and will focus on educating people about the freedom camping rules in our district – this will include informing the relevant associations so that travellers are aware of where they can and can’t camp.” Ms Duignan said the bylaw could be reviewed and changed but any changes would have to go through a special consultative process. “The special consultative process requires council to advertise and seek submissions on the changes that are being proposed.” Outgoing Raglan Ward councillor Clint Baddeley warned the community board at its last meeting that there would be repercussions surrounding the limitations on freedom camping in and around Raglan. Opinions of a Raglan Moaner A Raglan moaner recently found fame on Stuff when the news website published his rant on the Raglan Moaners Club Facebook page, called Ten Rules for Hipsters Travelling to Raglan this Summer. His “violent” views attracted a lot of other moaners and TVNZ, who he turned down for an interview. LEE KNIGHT, who is not a “Kiwi yocal”, explains himself to the Raglan Chronicle. The article was written during a night shift when the free view box had cut out due to a storm. I was as usual having a laugh at the mindless cretins on various social media sites and enjoying the badly spelled death threats and appalling grip of knowledge about world affairs and politics. The Raglan Moaners site is a perfect way for idiots like myself to blow off some steam and not worry that someone is going to threaten to kill me or make bizarre racist/sexist accusations that are completely irrelevant to what was written in the first place. I grew up reading Viz comics and 2000 AD. I still get my laughs from water blasting swear words on driveways and decking. At the age of 8 I was severely reprimanded at school for defacing a Ladybird book of Jesus by drawing a large willy on him and putting a pipe in his mouth. My list of things to do against hipsters (yes, probably a poor choice of words) who visit Raglan carries a serious message even if the methods are illegal and unpopular in some societies (the Philippines, Russia and Syria are exceptions). The rules simply imply don't be a dick. Don't litter, don't defecate in bushes where people walk or run sports events, don't rip off the community, don't be a thoughtless asshole in a busy shop, use your common sense in and around the town and especially when driving. I’m lucky enough to work in Raglan

so my travelling to and fro from beyond is limited yet still I witness or encounter poor to catastrophic driving. I once pulled a young man out of car wreck in Okete Rd who appeared to have scalped himself and was the victim of his own stupidity in a very powerful car probably paid for by his mummy and daddy; and recently I was in a queue of over 22 cars behind a van whose driver was oblivious to absolutely everything, even a carload of blokes who waved at him, non aggressively, in an attempt to get him to pull over and let others pass. The road from Dinsdale can be a nightmare if you are stuck behind people who don't know the road. A story in the Chronicle, years ago, blamed elderly people from England for holding up traffic but it’s probably a mix of every nationality and a few homegrown types. The simple message is use your mirrors, pull over when you see more than a few cars behind you. Don’t speed up to 100kmh on the straights then ram the brakes on so hard in the corners that you cause whiplash to the poor unfortunate sod driving behind you. Perhaps turn off the auto-tuned crap or acoustic drivel about sunsets, big waves and feelings and concentrate on the people behind you. Either way, the drive in and out of Raglan can resemble Fury Road at certain times. That stretch of highway doesn't need any further contributions to the hellish stupidity that already takes place seven days a week. So Raglan Moaners Club got some fame. We might be judged as a town that wishes nothing but harm and ill-feeling towards the bearded, man-bun types that visit but those doing the judging are unlikely to have much of a sense of humour and probably find James Cordner amusing. As for the flame-thrower comment – that’s not going to happen this year, anyway. It’s busted and there’s no way I can afford to get it fixed for 12 months at least.

HOME BIRTH AOTEAROA Home Birth Aotearoa’s National Hui is being hosted in Raglan this weekend. The national hui represents an opportunity celebrate, promote and support homebirth. Homebirthing honors the strength and intelligence of women, and their families, to birth safely and naturally at home. Many babies have been safely born at home under Karioi’s watchful gaze, and there are generations of homebirthing families in our community’s midst! Home Birth Aotearoa has members from all over the country. The National Hui is held in Spring, and its main purpose is to share knowledge and inspiration from homebirthing families, midwives and anyone in the home community who has an interest. There is an open potluck meal happening on Friday the 14th of Oct, 5.30pm at the Bible Camp, 578 Wainui Rd. This is for all Raglan people, who love and support homebirth, or are otherwise interested, to come together and share stories over good kai. Locals are also able to attend the Hui, but places are limited - anyone keen on coming please email waikato@homebirth.org.nz . The National Hui is follows tikanga Māori principles, and includes a kei a wai ceremony to open, and times for korero from attendees. Local midwives and women will have opportunities to share some of the inspirational work they are doing to support whānau in birthing their babies in a way that is safe, healthy and culturally strengthening for each family. Grass Verges Policy

Waikato District Council has adopted the Grass Verges Policy Bylaw 2016. This policy will come into effect on 1 October 2016. The Policy applies to all residential properties in urban areas within the 50km/h areas only of the district. Under the Policy, maintenance of a grass verge is the responsibility of the adjacent property owner. An exemption to the Policy will be considered if by way of age, illness or condition of the verge the property owner is unable to undertake maintenance.
