Local lifeguard straight into leaders programme, no questions asked

Isaac buoyed by his selection for the leadership programme.

R

aglan West volunteer lifeguard Isaac van der Vossen got “a bit of a shock” when he opened an email recently saying he’d been selected for Surf Life Saving New Zealand’s highly successful leadership programme. That’s because he expected to face an

interview or two first, just as fellow Raglan lifeguards Jess Reilly and Ella Boyens had before him. Both have completed the BP Leaders for Life course over the past two years, and had encouraged Isaac to do the same. Isaac, who describes himself as having slowly “stepped up” the ranks at his local club, now joins a record number of participants in the 2018-19 course.

The 20 year old will head off to the Bay of Plenty next month – along with 15 others from clubs stretching from Auckland to Invercargill – for the first of five weekend workshops around the country. Isaac doesn’t really know what to expect but says he’s looking forward to the challenge of upskilling and “taking as much out of it (the experience) as possible”. The thrust of the programme is to “enhance the ability of current and emerging leaders”, explains SLSNZ member development manager Belinda Slement. The benefits extend beyond participants and into their clubs and communities. “We had some outstanding applicants this year,” she adds, and that’s why there are an unprecedented 16 participants. Isaac progressed from nippers as a five year old through to a rookie at about 12, then on to become a lifeguard in his teens. Now into his fifth season lifeguarding at Ngarunui, he’s also an IRB instructor and a first aid officer. He’s active too as a volunteer with St John Raglan, and recently organised getting an emergency defibrillator for the Raglan club. Isaac also does event guarding and that took him last year to the World Masters Games in Takapuna where, theoretically at least, he was “fishing” people out of the water. Lifeguarding generally is not only about saving lives, he insists, but about having an “awareness around the water we are surrounded by (here in New Zealand) … I wish everyone could do it”. Isaac reckons the only thing he hasn’t tackled to date is regional paid guarding – as opposed to volunteer guarding – which is done full-time during the height of summer. The reason is he’s been busy working in merchandising to hardware outlets around the country with his father Derek, a former chairman of Raglan’s family-oriented club. “And the boss wouldn’t let him have time off,” Derek jokes. You have fought long and hard to get where you are and endured many challenges along the way. The Nine of Wands is sometimes called the “wounded soldier”. filmmaker Maryann Tuao from independent film production company Groundswell Media, the hands-on workshop brings together experienced industry professionals to share their craft with local up-andcoming filmmaking talent. “We are very fortunate to have such talented creators to share their experience, skills and practical knowledge,” she says. Filmmaking royalty includes director

Hamish Bennett, whose first short films The Dump in 2011 and Ross and Beth in 2014 have won numerous awards. Both films showcased the talents of local actor Reiki Ruawai who had starring roles in the quirky short films. Other presenters are Waru actor Waimahi Hotere, producer, camera operator and editor Geoffrey Andrews and Michael Robins who has credits on Alien: Covenant, Patu Ihu and A Wrinkle in Time. From the initial concept, writing and directing, to the nuts and bolts of production and post-production, Maryann says the workshop is designed to guide creatives 13 years and over through each stage of the filmmaking process. “The workshop is an awesome opportunity for filmmakers who are interested in honing their skills for the Raglan Arts Film Festival Awards coming up in September.” Lunch and refreshments are provided both days - $40 per adult, $20 for youth 18 and under. Places are limited - email maryann. tuao@gmail.com or mob 021 251 4676 This workshop was made possible with the support of the Waikato District Creative Communities Scheme NZ and Raglan Lions Club, Raglan Supervalue. Outdoor bowls report

T

he most glorious day greeted us on Saturday June 9 for our second Winter Tournament, and stayed all day…how delightful to play bowls in such conditions.

Players arrived from Tui Park in TeAroha, Te Kuiti, Pirongia, Taupiri, Huntly, Frankton Railway, Frankton Junction, a composite team, and six local teams. That was a special muster. Our wonderful sponsor this month was Raglan BP 2 GO and we thank them very much for their continued support of our Club. The first team to benefit from such sponsorship was Bill Bond, Denis Pizer and Murray Eddy of Raglan, who had four wins and 41 points. In second place were Dave Campbell, Darryl Hawkins, and Gordon Mills, comprising a composite team. They also had four wins, but with 33 points. Coming in in third place were Dan and Wendy Weinberg and Dawn Adams from Te Kuiti with three wins and a draw – they almost got there! Congratulations to you all. You played well. Our next Winter tournament is scheduled for Saturday 14 July. Coming up this Sunday June 17, our club is holding its AGM at 10am, followed by prizegiving and a shared lunch. It will

be lovely to have everyone together for this special time. With this being my last newsletter for this season, I have been happy to keep the community informed of the happenings in our club. Watch out for our Twilight Bowls starting in November - get your team sorted soon and come on down for the competition. Roll-ups are still held on Wednesday and Saturdays during the winter

months at 12.45pm, but are dependant on the weather. For all enquiries contact the Bowling Club on 8258442. Leave a message and your call will get returned, or contact the numbers advised on the answer service. Here’s wishing you a safe winter and happy bowling. Eileen Stephens

V

eteran dancer Royce Kerapa is bringing his passion for hip hop to Whaingaroa with free classes at the Raglan Community House.

Held every Wednesday from 5.30-6.30pm, Royce believes in providing an outlet for youth to be creative in a safe environment. “I want to share my passion and skills with the local youth and give back to the community,” he says. Royce’s hip hop career spans over 20 years, his journey beginning with the Time Bandits group who toured nationally with 4 Corners, a merging of the four elements of hip hop culture – rapping, DJing, breakdancing and Graf art. With 4 Corners and more recently the Pirate Kings, Royce’s career highlights include performing with DJ Sir-Vere at the Missy Elliot concert, making the top three of 70 bands entered in the Coke Tunes at Edgefest '06, touring with Nesian Mystik and Misfits of Science and featuring on Maori Television, Mai Time and

Space. They have also supported top New Zealand acts such as Che Fu, King Kapisi, P-Money, Deceptikonz, Footsouljahs, Frontline and Scribe. Having experienced the buzz of competing and performing himself, Royce is keen to eventually form a Raglan Hip Hop crew to perform at competitions and events. The Youth Hip Hop workshop is part of the Raglan Youth Innovator Program coordinated by Maryann Tuao at the Raglan Community House to provide activities and mentorship to meet the emerging needs of youth in the community. Open to all ages, Royce is happy for people to just turn up on the Wednesday evening to check out the classes. New community rep joins Raglan Kopua Holiday Park Board

W

aikato District Council has appointed a new community representative to the Raglan Kopua Holiday Park Board. Jeanette Tyrrell replaces long-standing board member Peter Storey following the introduction of a new charter for the board, which provides for a rotation of board members on a three-yearly cycle. The charter requires a transparent and fair process for appointment of new members and the best candidates are sought, interviewed and appointed to the board. Nominations for a community representative from Raglan were requested through advertising in the local paper and two written applications were received for the interview process. Ms Tyrrell joins Colin Chung (business representative), Lisa Thomson (Raglan Ward

Councillor), Bob MacLeod (Raglan Community Board Chair), Pablo Rickard (Iwi representative) and Denise Reynolds (Iwi representative) on the Raglan Kopua Holiday Park Board. Waikato District Council Chief Executive Gavin Ion welcomed Ms Tyrrell on to the board and acknowledged Mr Storey’s contribution to the holiday park. “Mr Storey has put a lot of time and effort into his role on the board over a long period of time, always with the interests of Raglan and the camp at heart,” said Mr Ion. “He’s been a key person in the ongoing success of the camp and we appreciate all of his efforts.” WDC

S

ometimes an odd occurrence connects us to a new experience or a different direction. Synchronicity was a term coined by the psychiatrist Carl Jung suggesting events which may be beyond mere coincidence. Sometimes it may be a one off incident, such as two friends contacting each other out of the blue; other times it could be a cluster of linked events. Even books can have a chain effect as you search out other books written by the same author or books penned by someone who has written the foreword in a particular book. Recently, I found a book in the library about the history of Otaki Health Camp written by Di Buchan with articles contributed by nursing staff, teachers, maintenance workers and residents. For me, it was interesting because my first teaching post in New Zealand was at the Otaki Health Camp in 1975. I doubted anyone else in Raglan would have been interested, but before I went home I called in at the second hand book shop and I met a lady who had been a nurse aid at Auckland Health Camp. We were soon exchanging stories.

According to the Six degree theory, we are fewer than six steps or introductions from someone who could perhaps change our lives. The idea was first introduced by Hungarian writer Frigyes Karinthy in 1929 in a short story called ‘Chains’ and popularized in 1990 by ‘Six degrees of Separation’, a play written by John Gvuare ("Six Degrees of Separation (play)", 2018). With the invention of the internet and subsequently, social media, we are now able to connect at a much faster pace. No matter how lonely you feel, one of your acquaintances could be the link to finding a new friend or an old mate or a new beginning. What’s On • Crop Swap is on June 17 celebrating its first birthday and the Winter Solstice. Bring a plate to share. • The Saturday Club meets every Saturday at 9.30am at the Community House. • Horticulture Society meets June 19 at the Stewart Street Hall at 1pm. • Senior Technology is every Thursday at 2pm at the Raglan Community House.

What is your coaching style? How do you get the best out of your team? I think overall, we keep the team well structured, making sure all the kids know the importance of their positions and roles. I encourage them to train hard but have fun along the way. What do you hope to achieve with them? Our main goal with the kids is to take all the training to the field. It’s a team sport and a team effort. If they give it their all, leave it all out on the field and have fun, you can’t ask for much more than that!

10th Grade team

his week we caught up with 10th grade coach Joel Connor.

Score

Karioi Mystics

teamed up in 8th grade and we’ve coached together from there. How long have you been involved in the Rugby club? What is your role? I always played when I was a kid for Raglan Junior Rugby and this year I’m playing for the Raglan Senior team. I am also on the committees of both the junior and senior clubs.

What do you enjoy about the coaching experience? I really enjoy seeing the kids smile and enjoy themselves. It’s nice when they want you to stop and look at something they have been practising and you can see that they’re proud of themselves.Watching all the boys come together as a working team is awesome too!
