RAGLAN UNION CHURCH

This week the Chronicle had a chat with photographer, Geraldine Burns. Can you describe your photography? Natural, raw, real. I’m a bit obsessed with Raglan – so a LOT of my photos are of Raglan. I’m trying to capture the normal, real Raglan, the Raglan I see and love. My work is mainly of landscapes, I also really love photographing flowers and plants, and structures (bridges and architecture) too. I’m a graphic designer, so my images are probably quite influenced by that, textures, lines, composition and colour. I first met you years ago when you were doing some graphic design here at the Chronicle. When did you start to focus on photography ? It was probably around then. I used to sell photo blocks out here and at the Tamahere Markets. I’ve since sold art prints at markets and in shops and cafes. I’m now really keen to get into fine art photography and more exclusive framed work.

Other than creating artworks what other photography are you involved in? I also do some weddings and the odd family shoot too. I’ve recently ventured into fashion shoots for a friend too which is fun and a new challenge. When did you start to exhibit? I had my first exhibition at Blacksand back in about 2007. I’ve only exhibited in cafes so far, so I really want to get my work into some galleries – watch this space! You have an exhibition at Rockit what can we expect to see? I love putting my artwork up in Rock-it. It’s one of my favourite places to hang out and the painty rustic walls set off my simple, clean pieces nicely. This exhibition is called ‘Mood’ and I like to think that I’ve captured a real mood in my photos. All the images are of Raglan apart from one. Muted earthy tones, special light captured – I hope people connect with my photos and they evoke a feeling in them. Each image is a limited edition of 15, 5 of each size (A2/A1/A0) are available framed or unframed (on order). I have tried to showcase the type of framing that suits the images – with simple white and wood frames. My artworks will be accompanied by some gorgeous indoor plants from my friend Jasmine at Sill_life, all for sale too. I’m doing my first Raglan Arts Weekend at the end of January too, so my exhibition is running right through summer. I may add new pieces as I go (and once I sell some!). MOOD Photographic Art Exhibition by Geraldine Burns. On at Rock-it Kitchen and cafe from 9th December 2017. www.g-design.co.nz Instagram: g.design_photo

Raglan Karioi Trail 2017

Also at H.G Webb House, Cnr Boundary & Victoria Streets, Hamilton

Raglan Karioi Trail 2017 24km winner Bobby Dean makes his way across the finish line.

W

ith the tracks dry on the mountain, this year’s Raglan Karioi Trail was always going to be a fast race. Winner, Bobby Dean from Paengaroa, broke the 24km race record by seven minutes, running up and down the mountain twice in just two hours and 42 seconds. Organiser Francois Mazet, who also

competed this year for the first time, said Bobby’s performance was amazing. “Bobby won by 15 minutes.” Said Francois. Raglan resident Rodrigo Jaca Gonzalez came second (2:57:27). Previous record holder Sjors Corporaal (2:49:54) was supposed to run but had got injured in the week. His son, Kaya, ran instead, coming in fifth place overall and first in the men’s U18 division.

Top image: Runners prepare for the 24km race. Bottom image: Kitty and Cora McInereney complete the 10km race.

Sjors reckons he will be back next year to get his record back, says Francois. So the chase continues. A new record was set in the 10km race also. Aucklander Keon Hall, who turned 14 this week, beat Raglan local Reuben Kendall’s old record by two minutes. Francois says it was the first time in RKT’s 5 year history that a couple won the men’s and women’s 24km races. Bobby’s partner, Anna Barrett, was the first woman home, finishing in at 3:46:55. More than 200 people competed in RKT, with the most registrations in the 24km men’s race and then the 10km women’s race. “The 10km walk is getting popular, too, and the 2km kids race still gets the same enthusiasm! “Lots of family are running the event. When you look at the results you see one parent in the 24km, the other one in 10km with one kid, and another kid in the 2km! This is what we like to see, people enjoying Karioi and sharing this passion of running on it with their kids.” Raglan Rippers Ngakau Benseman, 13, and Cory Hartgill, 12, won the 24km relay race, while Raglan doctor Mike Loten and his son, Sam, 12, came second. “We had lots of kids running the 10km. Most of them started in the 2km four years ago and now they are running the 24km relay or 10km. We had six girls and six boys under 14 running the 10km race.” The 10km walk was won by Matt Pennell, from Hamilton (2:17:28) Chester Opperman, from Hamilton, won the 2km kids race, ahead of Flynn McGregor from Raglan. Renee Sweetman, from Raglan, won the girls’ division. As for Francois, he placed second in his division, the men’s 40-59 age group, in the 24km race, 12th overall. “I was mostly smiling all the way! I reckon it’s less tiring to run 24km than being race director.” Next year Raglan Karioi Trail will take place Saturday 8th December 2018. Follow their Facebook page to stay informed. Earlybird registrations will open in June. www.raglankarioitrail.co.nz

Tarot Talk

W

elcome to Tarot Talk - a new weekly column in which I will introduce a Tarot card for the week and provide a little information about it. I hope you enjoy this space. The card I have drawn for this week is the Four of Pentacles. The Four of Pentacles represents a financially stable situation and firm foundations. It also shows protection of assets and traditional values. This card can sound a note of warning however and is sometimes referred to as "the miser" card. One of the dangers of having wealth is the temptation to value money far above its real worth and this can lead to a miserly or ungenerous attitude. Overall though it shows that any wealth you have gained has come from hard work. You will value what you have achieved and, for the time be keen to protect your assets. More information about this card can be found on the Tarot Talk Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/tarottalknz/ Tarot readings are available by appointment. Txt Chrissy on 027 6644261

R

aglan Area School’s Surf Academy gives promising young surfers a taste of the wild west coast surf action and Raglan family life.

Founded in 1998 by Deane Hishon, the academy finds local homes for up to 22 out-of-town students with an international surfing career on their minds. First- time homestay parents Rachel and Aaron Bidois have had two academy grommets - Jay Piper-Healion, 17, from Whitianga and Jack Lee, 15, from Whakatane - living with them for the past year and say the experience has enriched their family life. “Having them here has brought a new dynamic to our family,” Rachel says. “They are great kids and are a really good influence on our kids.”

The three Bidois children – Hudson, 12, Harlow, 7 and Louis, 6, instantly took to the new family members and Rachel says they look up to the boys as if they were big brothers. Jay and Jack are out surfing any minute they can squeeze into the day and say Raglan is the place to be for good surf. “The surf here is way more consistent,” Jay says. Maintaining good grades is part and parcel of the programme and Aaron says it makes the boys more focused and keeps them away from the usual teenage antics that might get them into trouble. “The kids coming into the academy really have a lot to prove to their parents for them to be here.” Wayne Morris has organised the Surf Academy homestays in Raglan for the past

10 years and he is always on the lookout for new families to come on board. He spends time interviewing families and students to find the right fit for both parties. “I make sure the student is in a happy environment where they feel comfortable,” he says. “If they’re not happy it affects their schoolwork, their surfing and their wellbeing.” After an initial trial period of around six weeks, he will check in with the student and the family to see how things are going and he will make other arrangements if necessary. Janine Jackson Wayne is on the hunt for a couple of families for next year’s intake of students. For more information contact him on 022 604 2251.

From left - Raglan Kindergarten kids Sophia, Jack and Brayden give the Lions' Christmas cuddly toys their seal of approval.

S

anta will deliver good cheer and cuddly toys to the children of Raglan thanks to the Lions Club and Raglan Surfside Church.

The initiative started over 30 years ago when the Lions organised the annual Christmas Eve celebration in Raglan. In the last 10 years the sleigh reins have been handed over to the Surfside Church elves who now help Santa give out the toys and lollies. Throughout the year hundreds of soft toys are collected, sorted and washed by the hardworking team at the Lions Op Shop and shop manager Wendy Coxhead says it’s a wonderful community collaboration. “It’s a great way to share the love at Christmas and bring joy to lots of children.” Surfside pastor Roger Peart has fond

memories of seeing Santa in Raglan spanning three generations. “I remember taking my younger brother and sister along, then my children when they were young and now my grandchildren are going,” he says. “So, when we were approached by the Lions Club to give them a hand it was easy to say yes.” Roger says the Lions do all the hard work giving the soft toys a new lease of life and they also buy the lollies. The Raglan Volunteer Fire Brigade also lend a hand driving Santa and his elves around town in the fire engine. Keep an eye out for Santa and his elves riding the fire engine on Christmas Eve starting at 5.30pm. Janine Jackson

Plant a Tree promotion with Wild Coast Ruapuke

A

s caretakers of our land, we, like many other farmers and landowners dedicate our lives to our whenua. Wayne, Penny and Kids have been at Ruapuke for over 22 years and have regenerated many hectares back to thriving bush. The streams are clean and the birds are back.

Wildcoast Ruapuke is a family run business that offers awesome horse adventures through the bush and over farmland and down along Ruapuke Beach. The stylish eco cabins are set on the regenerating bush overlooking the Wairake

stream (the biggest flow on the Ruapuke side of Karioi te maunga). Wayne and Penny have planted 1000s of trees over their time in Ruapuke and are planning on doing much more. Their aim is to replant and retire another 7 hectares next year from grazing to bush. To involve the wider community in their replanting endeavours they have decided that during the month of February 2018 they will plant one tree come planting season for every person who comes riding or stays in their cabins. They hope they will see you out there so they can plant a tree with your name on it!

This week we sat down with Bruce and Brenda Teddy, who run Raglan R&R AirBnB in Te Uku.

Why did you decide to set up a safari tent as accommodation? Brenda: We started off with a B and B up at the house and then we decided to expand from there because we knew our guests would love the experience. We wanted to create a camping experience without people having to put a tent up. Everything is done for them. Bruce: We like the concept of people coming to enjoy the rural life plus it's my retirement fund! How was the experience setting the whole campsite up?

Bruce: Setting it up was a good challenging venture. We were playing in the mud for 3 months with all the rain over winter. Must say WDC were very helpful through the process. I wanted to get the tent as low to the ground as possible to make it feel like proper camping. The tent comes from Holland. It arrived and we were pretty much on our own in terms of figuring out the rest. Whats the feedback like so far? Bruce: Feedback is absolutely fantastic. Brenda: People say we have thought of everything and it's the little touches that people appreciate. The fire pit and hot tub under the stars are a hit.

W

ith the busy summer season we need to be sun smart. As we get older the skin becomes more susceptible to sun damage. Use a good quality sunscreen and wear a layer of clothing during the heat of the day and a sun hat. Stay out of sun between the hours 11 am and 4 pm particularly on clear sunny days. Drink plenty of water to keep the body and brain hydrated. The brain is 75 % water and even a small amount of dehydration can cause problems such as poor concentration, fatigue and anxiety. Keep a water bottle handy while driving and take frequent breaks on long journeys. Nicotine and caffeine and sugar (found in fruit drinks) may have a detrimental effect so stick to fresh water. Make sure pets have access to fresh water and be aware that cats are attracted to the anti freeze that may drip out from a car radiator on to ground. Cats are attracted to the sweet taste of the Ethylene Glycol found in anti freeze and only a small amount ingested may be deadly . Rat Poison can also be a problem especially for dogs that tend to scavenge. Make sure rat bait is out of the reach of pets and children. This week sees the last session of the year for Care and Craft and the Senior Computer Technology Group. Both will start up again at the beginning of February. A huge thank you to Jake who has helped get the older generation online and supported us with the on going issues of modern technology for the last two years. The Raglan Community House will be closed from December 22 until January 15 and the Bargain basement will be relocated upstairs .

8 RAGLAN Chronicle

Raglan Community Health Service Van will also close from December 22 until January 15. The Senior Saturday Group will continue through the summer. Those wishing to attend the Raglan Community Christmas Dinner need to contact the Community House 8258142 or The Raglan Colin 8258289 or Dave 8258792. The Lions Op Shop will be open every day except Christmas Day. Now is the time to get the New Year’s Eve Parade floats ready for the January 30. This is an annual event run by the Lions and supported by the Waikato District Council and the Raglan Community Board. Contact Bob 825 8041 or the Raglan Book Shop for details Emergency numbers will be displayed on new signs in public places and notice boards around the town and also at the Community House. The Raglan Medical Centre will be open normal hours over the summer except statuary holidays, Christmas Day and Boxing Day and New Years on January 1 and 2. The next Crop Swap meeting will be at the Bowling Club on December 17. All welcome. Bring something from your garden or kitchen to swap. The Knitters Circle will continue throughout the holiday period on Wednesday mornings at Orca Restaurant, Water Restrictions are now in place and at this stage sprinkler systems may be used in the morning between 6am - 8am and 6pm – 8pm during the evening. Hand held hoses can be used at any time. This is level one, however, there may be further restrictions if the dry weather continues. Contact the council if in doubt. Pauline Abrahams

Waikato District Council celebrates youth engagement programme

Waikato District Council Youth Engagement Advisor Shannon Kelly, Councillor Lisa Thomson, and Raglan youth representatives Charlie Irvin, Sven Seddon and Grace Mindoro.

A

bout 40 guests including youth representatives on Waikato District Council community boards, their mentors, and the groups they lead, attended an endof-year celebration of the Council’s youth engagement programme at the Council chambers back in November. Waikato District Mayor Allan Sanson said, “We’re proud of what our youth have achieved this year and we hope the experience will encourage them to continue to pursue their own projects and ideas, and to continue to work with their local community boards and committees to get things done for youth in our district.” Nine youth action groups have been set up in the district with representation on their local community board or committee as a result of the Council’s strategy to engage with the district’s youth. They are in Onewhero, Huntly, Ngaruawahia, Tuakau, Te Kauwhata, Raglan, Taupiri, Tamahere and Meremere. Most of the groups were set up as a result of a Council ‘Govern Up’ challenge earlier this year. With a $10,000 grant secured from the Ministry of Social Development, the ‘Govern Up’ programme challenged young people around the district to grow

their leadership and governance skills by organising community-based events or projects. Each group that entered the programme was given a share of the grant to assist them. Through the ‘Govern Up’ programme about 100 young people have gained leadership experience in organising events involving nearly 600 other youth in the district including a fruit tree giveaway in Onewhero, a Health Expo in Ngaruawahia, a community planting in Taupiri, a Wacky Hair Disco in Te Kauwhata, and a ‘Creative-Con’ in Huntly. Many of the youth have built on that experience to move onto other group or individual projects. Three members of the Onewhero-Tuakau and Te Kauwhata youth action groups applied for and won scholarships from The New Zealand China Friendship Society to travel to China this year to retrace the footsteps of New Zealand author and poet, Rewi Alley. A Waikato District youth award winner from a previous year who was then elected to the Taupiri Community Board, Sharnay Ormsby Cocup, this year went on to win a national Women of Influence Young Leader award for her work. If you would like to join a youth action group in your area, contact Shannon Kelly on 027 405 6450.

Students from Raglan Area School took to the streets last week to showcase the hard work they have put in to their recent projects.

An occasional column with Aaron Mooar, Station Manager of Raglan Community Radio and the host of the Morning Show.

T

here has been a really positive news story coming out of Patea over the last two years that started with new principal Nicola Ngarewa being appointed after a period of crisis at the school. She has modernised the way the school runs, doing away with bell times and offering a kind of flexi time for older students so that they could fit jobs in around their studies. These and many other changes have turned around student performance at the school

with an improvement in academic results and an increase in attendance and students numbers. Because our own Area School Board of Trustees has been asking for community feedback on their 2018 charter recently I thought it was a good time to interview Patea’s principal about these changes Nicola Ngarewa who was the Taranaki Daily Times person of the year for 2016 didn’t beat about the bush, she was very up front about the fact that the current school model originated 100 years ago and isn’t preparing children for the modern world. It needs a good shake up she said.

Patea Area School encourages students to take responsibility for their own learning, they have done away with timetables and work areas are designed for collaboration. Students plan their own curricula based on their own interests and ambitions. These are experiences that will provide skills essential for a rapidly changing work environment – and very different to the traditional experience of sitting in a classroom and having your day directed by the school bell. They teach Mandarin at Patea Area School now and have sent groups of students to work at an orphanage in Fiji and on trips to Silicon Valley and Stanford University.

Every second Friday they go out into the community doing things like dive courses or hunting and gathering. Patea students also got involved in the South Taranaki Reef Life Project, a community project documenting sea life on a reef 11 km off the coast of Patea. This is part of the ocean that the head of TTR, Alan Eggers, famously described as a virtual desert. The project has proven otherwise and the students have been full involved. Their teachers say they can’t get enough of it and are thirsty for more knowledge and the chance to continue their involvement. Our own Phil McCabe ('til recently the Chair of KASM) said that he can’t speak highly enough of the contribution the reef project made in the case against TTR. There’s often criticism directed at younger generations for their poor turn out when it comes to elections but what’s missed is that they’re often active in different ways. Patea Area School has proven that even before they’re old enough to vote they’re just itching to get out of the classroom and be involved in making a real difference in the world. The interview with Nicola Ngarewa can be found by looking up Morning Show interviews on the podcasting page at www. raglanradio.com. Aaron Mooar is Station Manager of Raglan Community Radio and the host of the Morning Show. On air 6 – 10am weekdays on 98.1FM and streaming/ podcasting on www.raglanradio.com

Whaingaroa Youth Movement presents: Wayfinding - a children's community dance project

W

haingaora Youth Movement's annual dance performance was held over the weekend at Wainui Bush Park Reserve. Another beautiful performance that was choreographed by Patti Mitchley and her talented crew of dancers. This year's performance was about

continuous navigation: "We are the stars, the birds, the waves. We sense direction in the soles of our feet, in the feel of the wind and in the sound of the rushing wake." "We point our compass inwards to where our gifts, values and passions meet. In the spirit of exploration and wonder, our path and purpose appears." Images thanks to Erin Walker and Geraldine Burns.
