SUNDAY SERVICE

With large crowds expected, festival organisers have been working hard to ensure Soundsplash leaves a positive impact on Raglan, including its community and environment. To help minimise traffic congestion, bus services have been arranged from Hamilton to the festival, and an increased number of free shuttle buses will run between the Raglan i-SITE Visitor Information Centre, Raglan Airfield and the festival site. In addition to sold out on-site festival parking, a free offsite parking area has been arranged for Soundsplash ticket holders at Raglan Airfield. Soundsplash is proud to be a zero-waste festival, and is once again partnering with a number of environmentally-conscious organisations, among them Xtreme Zero

Waste, Plastic Bag Free Raglan and Karioi Maunga. Other sustainability initiatives include on-ground recycling and solar charging stations, and a use of repurposed materials throughout the site. Key Soundsplash information for the Raglan community: ● Soundsplash 2018 runs Friday January 19th to Sunday January 21st at Wainui Reserve (368 Wainui Road). Festival gates will be open 8am - 1am Fri/ Sat, and 8am - 6pm Sunday. ● Stages will run to 1am on both Friday and Saturday, with the Outsides stage closing at 3pm on Sunday afternoon. ● While every effort has been made to reduce traffic congestion, delays are expected on Wainui Road during peak times. During last year’s festival, Friday from approx. 10am-3pm saw the bulk of the traffic as campers arrived. ● Traffic control will be operating on Wainui Road at various times throughout the festival. ● Free shuttles for Soundsplash ticketholders will operate between the Raglan Airfield, Raglan i-SITE Visitor Information Centre and the festival site, running continuously during the following times: Friday 10am - Saturday 2am Saturday 9am - Sunday 2am Sunday 9am - 4pm ● During the festival, a free offsite parking area will be available for Soundsplash ticket holders at the Raglan Airfield. This will be open during the following hours: Friday 8am – Saturday 2am Saturday 8am – Sunday 2am ● Public access to Wainui Reserve will remain available between 6am-8pm Friday-Sunday For further information head to soundsplash.co.nz. Tickets for Soundsplash can be purchased from eventfinda.co.nz

R

aglan Surf Academy is excited at the prospect of “fostering” the sporting careers of three young guns who starred at last week’s national surfing championships, held along the Gisborne coastline in conditions described as pretty contestable. Longtime academy co-teacher Larry Fisher – who himself won a couple of agegroup thirds in an event which attracted 300 entries all up – says 13-year-old Kora Cooper was the “big standout” for Raglan with a first and two second placings across three divisions. Kora is set to join the academy next year – 2019 – along with two other young Raglan up-and-comers, Jayden Willoughby and Brie Bennett. The trio will be into year 11 at Raglan Area School by then and Larry says “we are looking forward to fostering them in the academy”. Both Kora and Brie won their respective under-16 divisions – and were also runnersup in the under-18s – while Jayden took

the under-14 boys title just ahead of Kora. Another young local, Navryn Malone, was fourth in the same division. Founding surf academy teacher Deane Hishon confirmed that “loads of kids” who were going through or had completed the academy did well at the nationals. He cited the performances of Conor McLennan, who won the under-18s; exstudents Levi Stewart and Paul Moretti, third and fourth respectively in the open finals; Jack Lee, who came third in the under-16 final; and Raiha Ensor, who claimed the open women’s title in “dramatic” fashion. Meanwhile the “old guys” from Raglan fared well too, says Deane, who didn’t get to the nationals himself because of a shoulder injury. Larry’s two thirds in his over-30 divisions were bested by Chris Malone, who placed both second and third in his. Meanwhile Geoff Hutchison won the over50s and picked up a third in the over- 45s. Raglan also claimed double finalists in the stand-up paddleboard divisions, with surfing legend Daniel Kereopa reclaiming

the men’s title and Renee Davenport finishing fourth in the women’s. But there were some big disappointments, too, for Raglan at the nationals. In one of the premier contests, the open men’s division, a day of major upsets early in the competition saw the demise of both five-time winner and defending champion Billy Stairmand and last year’s runner-up Taylor Hutchison. Billy was “really unlucky”, says Deane, needing a 4.9 to continue into the semifinals but scoring a 4.7. Another disappointment was that Raglan’s Point Boardriders, who went into the event as defending club champions, had the national title snatched from them by Gisborne Boardriders. The hosts’ Ricardo Christie sealed things when he took out the open men’s final last Saturday, the final day of competition. Conditions at the week-long nationals were described as generally “solid and clean”, with the last two days predominantly a left-hand break which Deane says “suited our young stars”. Edith Symes

Tarot Talk

H

appy New Year! Welcome back to Tarot Talk - a weekly column in which I introduce a Tarot card for the week and provide a little information about it. I hope you enjoy this space. This week's card is the Three of Wands - a card of vision and foresight a great card to see at the start of a new year. It represents a time of removing yourself from the immediate situation, detaching and gaining perspective. This card can tell you to take the long view. Don't react to the heat of the moment, but step back and reconsider. See how the present fits into the greater picture and the future you dream of. The Three of Wands is also a card of exploration but exploration that is based on informed decisions. It is also a card of expectation – you have “sent the ships out” and now stand wondering where they will go and what they will bring back. Threes represent the idea of creation, gifts, challenges, opportunities and imagination. New directions and growth can take place. This card can represent enterprises and business or the undertaking of a creative project or goal.More information about this card can be found on the Tarot Talk Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/tarottalknz/ Tarot readings are available by appointment. Raglan Club executive are ready to fight for survival review, evaluation of the executive committee and human resources, and membership team building initiatives were met with full support. The membership also supported further motions to have at least three executive members present when legal and professional advice is sought, retaining an independent chair for executive committee meetings for a period of time and the cancellation of a special general meeting in February called by the Colin. Documents presented at the meeting included a letter dated June 22, 2017 and signed by Colin and SuperValue owner Sanjay Sharma recording an interest free loan to the club of $50,000. Debbie says the Club takes full responsibility for repaying the loan and all money from the loan was used in the dayto-day running of the club. “We are very grateful for the loan from Sanjay, we are just concerned that the correct processes weren’t followed in getting the loan.” Including Debbie, the executive now comprises vice-president Pablo Rickard, secretary John Joensen, treasurer Kay Fong, Craig Bridgeman, Dale Warren, Gary Kite, Glenn Rangitonga and Walter Rapana. Debbie says the executive are now focussed on working with Bizworx to develop the club’s strategic plan. “The members have told us they don’t want to sell so we will be moving step-bystep to secure the future of the club.” Janine Jackson

aglan Club membership have voted overwhelming to remove president Colin Sullivan from the executive committee at a special general meeting.

Although not in attendance, an email by Colin was read out explaining he had received legal advice not to attend as it would sanction the validity of the meeting. “I wanted the meeting postponed until the club’s lawyers were back so the club could get advice and I could get advice,” Colin says. Other remits included affirming vice president Debbie Dalbeth as the new president, developing a strategic plan to be implemented by March 2018 incorporating budget forecasting, financial

Fifty years and still singing the Blues

Bluesman Midge Marsden will be returning to Raglan to play a gig at the Raglan Club.

arking 50 years is no small M thing for a rock and roller, and eminent bluesman Midge Marsden is doing it in style.

Headlining at the Raglan Club this Anniversary Weekend – Sunday, January 28, Midge recently released a two-CD box set to celebrate a half-century of recording. Dubbed The MIDGE MARSDEN Collection, it’s an anthology of Midge’s musical history covering classic R&B roots, country-fused, big band and blues rock genres. At 72, retirement from recording and live gigs is on the horizon and Midge says the CD, the Raglan gig and a nationwide tour starting in March may be his swansong to the entertainment industry. “I really am going to pull the pin, if someone were to ring and say ‘hey we’ve got a gig for you how’s 10 grand sound’ of course I’m going to take it,” he laughs. And he’s also not ruling out playing with Raglan band The Mudsharks who were legendary in the 80s with their Mudshark Monday gigs at the Harbour View Hotel.

Technically he’s got closer to 60 years in the music industry under his belt - joining 60’s band Bari and the Breakaways at 16, followed by a radio stint with NZBC, time playing with Wellington cult band The Country Flyers in the 70s and several years in Australia with The Phil Manning Band. He began a solo career forming The Midge Marsden Connection on his return to New Zealand in the mid-80s, which morphed into The Midge Marsden Band who went on to release gold album Burning Rain in 1990. Any bluesman worth their salt needs to spend time in the United States and Midge spent several years touring the country with his band. He became good friends with blues and rock legends Mississippi Willie Foster, Bobby Mack and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Midge would often stay at Stevie’s house and tour with him, playing harmonica. A former Whaingaroa local for 33 years, Midge bought a home by the old cement silos for $12,500 in the 80s. “I was almost a local,” he laughs. Sadly, he says work commitments drove him back to Auckland and he sold the Rose Street house a couple of years ago. Born in New Plymouth, Midge says he tried surfing in the famous Taranaki breaks back when the boards were big and cumbersome. “Back then the boards were huge big battleships and we got these little trolleys on the end of our bikes and we used to puff and pant all the way down to the beach, puff and pant paddling out to the waves and puff and pant riding back again.” “I had the fear factor thing – I was quite small and not very confident but I gave it a go.” He also gave it another go in Raglan but says body surfing is more his style. “I love to swim, body surf and walk the beaches – I gotta say I really miss it (Raglan).” Midge Marsden Giveaway The Raglan Chronicle has two double passes to the Raglan Club gig on Sunday, January 28 and two limited edition The MIDGE MARSDEN Collection (2CD) which include a 12-page glossy booklet with track by track notes and accompanying photographs to giveaway. Email: info@raglanchronicle. co.nz with your name and contact number by Tuesday, January 23, to go in the draw.

Artist exhibition: No Rules Here

N

Artwork 'Beauty and the Beast' by Joy Hunter.

o Rules Here', an exhibition of work by emerging artists is again being held at the Raglan Town Hall in Bow St as part of the annual Raglan Arts Weekend 2018. The exhibition includes an art activities program with opportunities for patrons to try painting and drawing, Henna Tattoo and Face Painting. Freelance film-maker, Maryann Tuao, who supported some of the artists by promoting them in the first successful Emerging Artists Exhibition Jan 2017, says the title of the exhibition reflects the deviation from the standard practice of how art works are usually shown.

“These artists are pushing the boundaries of how art is usually presented.” This year new local artists have joined the group of about 26 emerging artists who are aged from 9 years old to art-school graduates in their early 20s. Maryann says their collection of work captures emerging trends and themes in a range of media, including photography, painting, drawing, digital work, patchwork and quilting. Selected artworks and home baking will be available for sale, with the artists’ contact details available from the curators. ‘No Rules Here is at the Raglan Town Hall in Bow St during Auckland Anniversary Weekend (January 27-29, 2018), Saturday to Monday from 10am to 3pm.

COMMUNITY HEROES An occasional column featuring volunteers in our community sponsored by West Coast Health Clinic

T

his week we spoke to Mark and Anne Snowden who are heavily involved with the local Surf Life Saving Club.

to make me laugh, smile and share my time with others. I have also found that if you are unsure about getting involved jump in feet first and give it a go, that's the only way you will find out what fits for you and you may surprise yourself and enjoy what you least expect. You are well known in Raglan not only for Surf Lifesaving but also as a Childcare teacher Anne. I know I speak for many mums in the community who have felt so comforted dropping off little ones to someone that feels like an Aunty or a family member. We could feel the love Anne - so much appreciation for that. Tell us about your role at Magnolia Childcare now? Definitely the Granny feel nowadays, I often get called Nana at work :) My role change at Magnolia Tree Childcare this year has been from teacher to manager. This has definitely been a change of head space and an ongoing project to challenge me. I still have three days working with the children which absolutely delights me and I prefer to the office days. I am still excited to see what the day will bring each day with these amazing little people who teach us so much. Number one tip for parents of children at the beach this summer? Stay with your children even if you think the water looks calm and they will be okay. Swim between the flags always. If you are unsure ask the lifeguard on the beach for advice and don't forget that sunscreen and hats for everyone, including yourself.

When did you first get involved in Surf Lifesaving? After moving to Raglan we took the girls (only three of them at the time) to Nippers with Anne Gair in 1993 when the Clubhouse was at the harbour mouth and we used to travel the 3km down the beach by tractor and trailer, often loosing a parent off the back as the ride was very bumpy and holding children on was a priority. What is your involvement today? After many many years of looking after the equipment and building Mark has retired and now has the opportunity to take his grand children to Junior Surf on Sundays. I am still involved in Junior Surf as the Co-ordinator of the programme supporting new coaches and after Christmas will be running the tadpole programme for the under 6's. I also support the club as a member of the Management Board, representative on the Reserve Advisory and bookings officer for club events. How much time does it involve? Lots :) What do you like about this aspect of your life? I enjoy watching the learning happening for these young children and their parents and knowing that the knowledge we share will help keep people safe at the beach and in the water. We also have so much fun each week and smiles are always present at the end of the day. Tell us about your family life when the kids were young? Family life was full of participation in community events and sports activities with the girls all playing team sports on Saturdays and adventures to the beach on Sundays. We still Telephone: 825 0114 say we travel in a pack and If you After hours: see one Snowden there's probably another not far away. Anglesea Clinic 07 825 0800 Do you feel stretched by Healthline 0800 611 116 giving your time to these community causes or is that how you like it?
