rom the worst harbour in the country for recreational fishing to one of the cleanest,

Raglan’s undergone a seachange over the past 26 years – and it’s all largely down to two people who cared. Back then in the 1990s keen local fisher Fred Lichtwark took the first step by putting up a notice in the local library asking if anyone even cared that the harbour turned so muddy after rainfall. And environmental scientist Fiona Edwards – who was regularly observing from the deck of her Raglan West home how the sparkling blue waters of the harbour were frequently turning brown for weeks at a time – responded “actually yes I do care”. So she met up with Fred, a one-time farmer turned environmentalist perhaps best known these days as an outspoken Waikato regional councillor, who reckoned the solution was to plant masses of trees to stop sediment and runoff getting into the harbour. It was 1995 and, in response to a leaflet drop, 70-odd concerned people turned up to a public meeting in the town hall, Fiona recalls. They were mostly farmers, fishers, scientists and local hapū – including staunch Māori land rights activist Eva Rickard – and they endorsed a simple plan to start growing plants. That same meeting also spawned Whaingaroa Harbour Care which initially had just 15 signed-

Its first plantings were at the nearby Wainui Reserve soon after Ngarunui Beach access road was opened up. That was then the most publicly visible farmland in the catchment, says Fiona, with 200,000 visitors a year flocking to the beach beyond in the early 1990s. The planting programme has continued apace, and last October Conservation Minister Eugenie Sage visited the reserve to help plant Harbour Care’s two millionth native tree in the Whaingaroa catchment. “How entirely fitting that it be planted here (in Wainui Reserve), she remarked at the time. “You have been visionaries for Aotearoa.” A key to Harbour Care’s success has been the

Whaingaroa harbour has been transformed, she says, from a polluted to a flourishing ecosystem. It costs $350,000 a year to run Whaingaroa Harbour Care, a figure which includes paying the lease and a small team of staff each planting season. Fortunately landowners have pitched in to meet the cost of trees, while as an incorporated society Harbour Care has also been able to secure funding grants. So where to next? “We are aware of the need for climate action and are currently trying to perfect our (economic) model,” Fiona reveals, “by moving into more planting of native trees for carbon capture.” In practical terms that means Harbour Care is looking again to work alongside any landowners willing to set aside at least one hectare of land for planting of natives, which absorb carbon dioxide.

I have held many different roles and originally when I started I created the Year 11-13 Senior Social Sciences department. I love working up at the kura with all the cool kaiako. My new role now is a community connector which I love. This is about supporting the

I had a challenging time at school. I was a remedial reader, I was probably also pretty mischievous…. I had three distinctive and different learning experiences; being taught by the nuns… not the most fun I’ve had, Tauranga boys….. Hyper masculine and then boarding school… None of these environments created a spark for me or got me excited about learning. It was only

at university where I found the Social Sciences and revolutionary politics that I became passionate and engaged…This led to me becoming actively involved in the left-wing movement, in antiwar and social justice issues. I then became a teacher for the Trade Unions, teaching about discrimination and sexual harassment for youth and created a pilot programme for people who had been institutionalised for mental illness for ten years or longer. After that I taught English in South Korea in one of the first waves of teachers. By then I was hooked on teaching and went to teacher training. My first proper teaching job was in Ōtara which I

The local community is outstanding and I feel really blessed to be a part of it. There is a group of people who are committed to supporting our youth and there are so many people that are actively involved in making our community better, from environmentally, to culturally, to supporting the elderly and those who need a bit of awhi. It’s a really kind and loving community.

Tasha my wife and I both lost our mums to cancer very close together. I had already lost my dad as a child and Tasha had also lost her dad, so we were adult orphans. We were grief stricken and our kids were really sad. We wanted to show them that the world was full of fun, joy and adventure, as well as suffering. We wanted to create unique experiences and lasting memories. I think we also just wanted to escape! So we spent some of our inheritance. Also, I had already spent a year in Germany when I was young, as my mother was German. There I learnt about her life as a refugee caused by WW2. Therefore as my Indian father had passed away while I was so young, I never really knew anything about my Indian culture. I had only spent a small amount of time there with my Indian relatives. I wanted to reconnect to that for myself and also for my family. We travelled right throughout India and spent some quality time with my relatives. We created a street ‘school’ teaching art and games to street kids. We volunteered at several different organisations that help orphans. It was amazing to see what people are doing. It was a crazy, beautiful, unforgettable experience.

I understand a few years ago you spent an extended time in India as a family. Can you tell us about this experience and why you decided to pursue it?

It has changed and developed so much over the years. At the moment I am focused on

What aspect of teaching do you particularity enjoy? I love to push the limits of teaching, bringing in creative and passion producing elements to inspire and engage young people. In particular, I really love teaching young people about the world, and supporting them to create social actions. This hopefully inspires them to live lives that make a difference and helps them realise they have the power to actively change their world. There are so many amazing rangatahi in Whaingaroa and I feel so much gratitude to them. It’s a total privilege to be a teacher. How is the experience of teaching within your local community ?

Is there a particular focus/principle in teaching that resonates with you most?

attending to young people’s hearts as well as their minds and so I have started delivering the Roots of Empathy programme and developing what I call ‘therapeutic learning’’ . This is based on the neuro-sequential model. As for young people’s minds, I am enthused about the potential of rewiring the brain for our youth and so I’m working hard to bring a brain plasticity programme called Fast ForWord. Do you have professional development goals to kick ? I want to train for the World Peace Games in America and go back to India and build a school for street kids. I’m super keen to Introduce the Fast ForWord programme at our kura, that’s the dream...but I keep adding to the list! Best movie, podcast, book, TV series you have come across recently? Books on empathy - The Boy That Was Raised as a Dog and Born For Love. I can’t watch netflix because I just binge watch, but a cool movie I have watched is Lion. We made friends in India with kids like this so it was very heart-rending. I haven’t figured out how to use podcasts yet, but I love TedTalks on happiness.

aglan artist Robert Currie is not one to let a little health scare stop him from doing what he loves best – creating art. Like a cat with nine lives, Robert has fought back from strokes, heart attacks, cancer, cataracts and depression, and has always come back with a great attitude to life. Famous for his iconic paintings of Raglan scenes and his Pink Palace gallery, Robert is launching a new series of artworks with an environmental slant. Breathing new life into CDs and 7-inch 45 rpm records, Robert is transforming them into coasters, wall hangings and fridge art. Dubbed Don’t Leave Raglan Without One, the mini works of art depict Robert’s famous Raglan Roast hole in the wall scene, and he plans to add more scenes to the series.

The ‘upcycling’ inspiration came to Robert during Lockdown, who like many, found himself spending long periods of time on his own. “I had two ideas – to save the planet and to motivate others to do something as well.” Launching the series during Easter, Robert is looking forward to sharing his love of Raglan and art with visitors to the gallery. “They can take a piece of Raglan back with them at an affordable price,” he says. A self-taught artist, Robert held his first exhibition 40 years ago when, on a whim, he asked a landlord of a vacant shop if he could lease it for six weeks. He furiously sketched Waihi vistas during the day and sold his water colour originals at night. Originally from Hamilton, Robert came to Raglan in 2001 after the

loss of his beloved wife Ann to cancer. Suffering deeply from depression, he went for a drive over the Divvy and never looked back. “When I got home, I said to Clyde the cat 'pack your bags we’re moving to Raglan',” he laughs. Robert still considered himself a ‘closet artist’ and after his success in Waihi hadn’t really entertained the thought of ever exhibiting again. A chance meeting in 2002 with the sisters Vera and Nora Van der Voorden who ran the then Te Uku Gallery convinced Robert to have an exhibition.

“Art saved my life,” Roberts says. The nearly 80-year-old artist paints at night and into the early hours of the morning, and says it gives him the motivation to get up the next day. “I’m really keen to get up in the morning and see what I’ve done,” he laughs. Despite the prostate cancer he successfully fought in 2000 returning, Robert knows he’ll beat it again, and he’s keen to encourage other men to chat to the doctor about their health.

It would be his second exhibition and on opening night he sold 12 paintings and has never looked back.

“I like to think that I’m pushing this health issue with other men, especially through their wives because men aren’t always so good at getting themselves checked out,” he says.

With a renewed creative outlet, he found himself off the antidepressants and loving life once more.

Raglan is known for being a surf town, but there are also so many creative people so one of the joys of Art to Wear is seeing the community engaged in something totally unique - both entrants and spectators. You don’t have to be a professional artist to participate. It is also of course amazing to be wowed by the creativity and effort people put into their designs.

What do you say to those in the community considering entering for the first time? Raglan Art to Wear show and all involved provide a supportive and encouraging social experience for participants their whānau and friends. We introduced in 2018 a mystery section which is a excellent option for those wishing to have a selection of materials to get the creative juices flowing, or for first time entrants. This is available in 2021 as the “it’s in the bag" section.

What have been the challenging aspects? How are you affected by the pandemic?

A lot of us get hung up on ...Should I enter?

This is a volunteer run event so the challenging aspects of Art to Wear are behind the scenes. We start slowly meeting about 1 year before the event date and then ramp up meetings as we get closer. Everyone volunteers out of love for the event - fitting the time in amongst their other responsibilities. We need to find sponsors and apply for funding, plan the production, and let people know about the event among other tasks. It can be a bit hectic a month before showtime since we never know if people will make and enter! But it always seems to work out.

ince its inception in 2016, RaglanArt has grown from half a dozen to be a vibrant and proactive group of 20 artists and photographers. Sixteen of our current members will be involved in the COLLIDESCOPE exhibition at the Old School Gallery through the month of April. As well as painters of many styles, including watercolour, oil, encaustic, and acrylic and resin, there are two photographers and many who swap from style to style as they explore the mediums. Julie Macdonald is a new member to the group and says: “I guess my style would be called “realism.” I particularly love painting landscapes and Raglan offers so much scope to produce something either peaceful or dramatic. I am very much a novice compared to other members of Raglan Art, but am learning something new with each painting completed.” Loesje de Bree’s background is more formal: “The process of creating art always has been important to me and has been my preferred means of communication with others in my

career as an arts therapist and counsellor since 2001. “My painting style has been described as ‘Quirky’, often depicting the human experience of feelings, thoughts and actions. I see myself as a visual storyteller, who leaves plenty of space for the viewer to recognize their own perceptions of themselves, others and the world.” Wanda Barker will be known to many for her poetry and her art. She explains: “I paint joy. I paint darkness. I explore my own rage against injustice. I rarely have any idea what I am painting at the beginning. I choose a palette which I throw at the canvas like a bomb. Often hands in, messy. I use text, build more layers. “Sometimes I cut holes and stab the canvas to let light in or find space in the work. Then sew it together, mend it. Paint over until I like 1t. Sometimes it’s quick and intuitive. Other times it takes years of paint and mess to rehabilitate a work.” The Opening will be on the evening of Thursday 1st April, 5:30pm to 7:30pm. We will be closed on Good Friday, then open every day from Saturday 3rd through to Thursday 29th, 10am to 4pm.

s the seasons change and days cool down, we can begin to be inspired by warming, colourful, nourishing foods. Isn’t it amazing that beautiful cruciferous vegetables, kumara, and citrus fruits, which are packed with Vitamin A, Vitamin C, antioxidants, and other nutrients which play crucial roles in immunity, will be coming into season very soon? At the Herbal Dispensary we have an abundance of locally grown, organic produce and products that can help support your immunity, wellbeing and overall glow this Autumn. Here are some ‘food as medicine’ tips to consider: To support immunity, eat as many leafy greens, wholefoods, and colourful fresh fruits and vegetables as possible. Include immune modulating and antimicrobial foods such as garlic, onion, ginger, turmeric, rosemary, and thyme. Spices and aromatic herbs are an incredibly rich source of a range of nutrients, antioxidants and phytochemicals. Choose warming and nourishing tonics as alternatives to coffee or sugary beverages, such

as our delicious new Turmeric Elixir, Spiced Shroom Cacao, or Nepal Masala Chai. Perhaps replace your morning coffee with one of the drinks above, or try adding in an adaptogenic mushroom powder (such as Reishi or Chaga). aving the world with children IS possible, and guess what, it works! In 2019 Nche and his team proved that eco-parenting effects children’s ability to protect the environment1. Living off-grid is nothing new, some members of our community thrive in such existence. For the rest of us, living the eco life can seem like an unrelenting journey. However, science shows us that parenting is a mechanism by which we can help children mitigate and adapt to climate change. My family recently attended Earth Beat Aotearoa Festival, a zero-waste event. We took part in workshops, danced on the earth, and feasted on vegetarian cuisine. All of this with a few tin cups and plates in our backpacks. Our children returned from the festival with compostable treasures: gems, wooden necklaces, balls of clay and dream-catchers. It was the first festival I have attended that was free of heavy branding. We drank beer and kombucha from our Contigo’s, and it felt great. Earth Beat Festival epitomised cultural citizenship, the sharing of lost arts and traditions. Workshops were available for all ages, and it was impossible to walk around and not be inspired by connections between people, as well as the sheer volume of shared skill. Given that creativity and crafts are at the heart of cultural sustainability, the question is: how can we take some of these ideas into our homes for the inward season of Autumn? Making collections of natural materials and storing them in baskets, boxes and buckets is a perfect first step in providing compostable crafts for your children at home this Autumn. When children approach a play space, if it looks inviting it is the first step to success. Steiner, Reggio Emilia, and Montessori schools have taken this

angle over the last one hundred years. Indeed, Boyd argues this is an ancient Maaori approach to intergenerational learning, and a critical component of Te Whaariki2. Once you have collected leaves, sticks, shells, branches, scraps of wool and cotton, then what? Firstly, children are the best creators, they will make something of their own accord. Connecting to something genuine to you is another good place to start, weaving, braiding, knotting or sequencing the natural resources to make patterns. I presented dream-catcher and streamer-wand workshops for the Conscious Kids tent at Earth Beat, but by the time the workshops had ended the children were very busy co-creating with the open-ended resources. A couple of years ago Dr Sanson and her team found that young people are deeply concerned about climate change3. Raglan has so much to offer families in terms of zero waste and lowwaste. You can head over to Facebook and see Shelley’s awesome low-waste living inspo at ‘In My Kitchen’. Hopefully young people in Raglan will feel empowered to mitigate climate change. Grab some baskets, or head to your recycling bins for some boxes. Then into your garden, or your neighbours garden, for some Autumn leaves, sticks and seed pods. Build up collections, and when you have a bounty, start crafting. You can make rafts out of sticks, clay figures, driftwood doll-house furniture, the possibilities are endless.

ux Vomica – Live in Concert marks The Veils’ first tour of New Zealand since 2017 and their first Auckland headline performance since 2014.

It will also be the first time the band has played their legendary sophomore album live in its ferocious entirety.   The album was originally recorded in Los Angeles with producer Nick Launay (PiL, Nick Cave, Yeah Yeah Yeahs) and has acquired iconic status since its release on Rough Trade Records in 2006. very year the project, Tunes of Waikato, select four youth music groups/duo/solo artists through an audition process and this year Raglan local Sasha Kirkwood was selected along with Cape Hill from Glen Murray, Armed Goldfish from Taupo and Betend Rocket from Cambridge. These winners have been mentored by successful music industry leaders. They were also given the opportunity to record three songs each in a reputed recording studio in Hamilton and perform in up to ten concerts in different districts in the Waikato.

aglan’s artist community is gearing up for the 13th annual Raglan Arts Weekend, with key 2021 dates announced for keen Raglan artists as well as visiting art aficionados from across the country. Due to the success and popularity of last year’s event, it will again be held over Labour Weekend, 23-25 October 2021. Artist registration will open mid-April and the registrations will be capped at 42 artists. Last year 37 artists took part, so an addition of 5 artists brings the event to its biggest yet. The registration fee remains the same as last year. There will be an Early Bird registration fee of $179 which will run for two weeks. After that, the full registration fee of $199 applies. “Last year, we had to close registration two weeks early as we reached our maximum quota for participating artists,” says Nicky Brzeska, Raglan’s RAW Coordinator, who has been handling the Arts Weekend for the past 2 years. “We’re seeing a renewed energy around the event, and it’s great that we’re drawing significant interest from artists who are new to RAW – both emerging and well established. So, if you’re keen to enter, start getting your material together now,” she urges.

An official ‘Call for Registrations’ will be announced in April in the Chronicle, through an email from the Old School Arts Centre to all people who are interested in art news, as well as on the Raglan Noticeboard. This year, artists will be required to supply all the following information at the time of registration to complete registration: 1. A complete registration form 2.
