pening just before New Year's Eve 2020, The Yard offers things like simple affordable kai, Raglan Roast Coffee, teas and juices as well as a variety of events from live music to vintage clothes popups. Owners of The Yard Brian Ruawai and Naomi Tuaopepe, most notably known for their Cornerstone Roots and Soundsplash Festival work, have always been keen to reinvest their skills and knowledge back into the community, and with over 20 years experience being part of the Aotearoa music industry they wanted a way to support the local music industry in their hometown Raglan. With first hand knowledge of the local and international music space, including connections to artists, managers, agents, promoters and event managers, the couple truly believe in the power of the arts to provide value in communities. "It has always been our goal to support a music industry in Raglan." "Arts are an integral part of our environment and contribute to a community’s economic, cultural and social well-being. Becoming generative means we have a stake in the future and The Yard is just another step towards achieving those aims," they said. Apart from coffee and food, The Yard offers a creative space for community events, live performance and music, celebrations, film screenings, art exhibitions and innovative pop up events. In the seven months since they opened the doors they have so far hosted events like live music with Julien Dyne & Frank Booker, a Dawn Raid film screening and vintage pop-up clothing market.

"All the shows have been amazing. Our first show was a colab with ULOs with Cian who brought Julien Dyne & Frank Booker, that was a standout." "Others were Zoe Moon & Keeper, The Dawn Raid Movie Screening, KITA & Joe K & Pool Sharks was another cool show." "The 2nd Life Vintage clothing pop up sessions have added another vibe to the Yard and having the Acid Mince artwork adds to the creative space." They said about some of the highlights. "It's a relaxed vibe and we have a very broad demographic and we like it like that. Our customers create the environment." While challenges always abound when starting a new venture the pair are optimistic to see the space grow. "We've had our fair share of challenges already; there will always be breakdowns and sometimes you have to sit back, observe and offer creative solutions. The Yard has its roots founded on music, creativity, authenticity and vibe." While ideas are always turning in Brian and Naomi's creative space - which also includes their office and music studio - they are excited to implement new ideas and offerings. On what the future may hold at The Yard they hope to support local artists through things like a music instrument library, The Yard Recording & Live sessions, live producer nights, vinyl swaps and music mentoring. They are also hoping to cook up some ideas for an extended evening menu. The Yard - 9a Bow St, Volcom Lane. Instagaram: raglan

een boardriders will go to almost any lengths to catch a wave but a group of five adaptive surfers took the challenge to a whole new level at Manu Bay recently.

As their coach and local surfing legend Daniel Kereopa observed, they couldn’t just launch themselves off Jump Rock – as most surfers do at Raglan’s famed left hand break – but had to find some other way into the water. For several that meant getting down the boat ramp with a prosthetic leg, while for others it was about abandoning wheelchairs at the end of the ramp then maneuvering themselves over the concrete and into the water to surf while lying on their boards. Daniel – or DK as he’s better known locally – was blown away by the gutsy attitude of the group. “We just take it all (getting out in the surf) for granted if we haven’t got a disability,” he told the Chronicle. The five surfers were at Manu Bay on their first training day for the ISA World Para Surfing Championship in December at Pismo Beach in California. A second training day is planned at the Mount later this month. DK says he’s totally committed to overseeing the group’s coaching regime. “It was the beginning of a relationship with these athletes,” he says. “I want to see them progress, which means understanding each of them physically and mentally.” He reckons he came away from that first training session feeling like it was one of the most rewarding things he’s ever done. While DK offers programmes and private tutoring through his own surf schools in Raglan and Orewa – and coaching individuals with disabilities is not

new to him – this is the first time he’s coached a group of adaptive surfers.

son Cabe, who assisted with coaching and safety procedures.

To train them to “top end” level is a big challenge, he admits, but one made a lot earlier by Te Uku adaptive surfer Bruce Campbell’s work in bringing the team together and setting the goals.

Also on hand were Raglan West couple Christine and Wayne Trott, who both compete in adaptive waka ama races and who brought home three silver medals in 2018 from the IVF Va’a World Distance Championships in Tahiti.

Bruce, who’s now 50, has surfed with a prosthetic leg for 15-odd years and in 2019 came third in the standing lower limb division of the Bali Adaptive Pro. Surfing is recognised as therapy, Bruce says, so getting adaptive people – especially young ones who surfed before losing a limb, for instance – back into the water “makes them feel normal again”. In his role as development officer for Adaptive Surfing New Zealand, Bruce says he “looks for talent” at the likes of the Halberg Foundation’s regular ‘Have A Go’ days, and in this way has brought the group of promising boardriders together. For all that getting into the surf at Manu Bay has its challenges, he says, they are nothing compared with the obstacles typically presented by a beach break. “A beach is hugely difficult,” Bruce explains, pointing out the difficulty using wheelchairs on less-than-hard surfaces. And at least no-one lost a prosthetic leg at Manu Bay, he quips. “They have a horrible tendency to come off in the water,” he says in all seriousness. Bruce insists it was only when he learnt how to keep his leg on in the water that he could actually make any headway as an adaptive surfer. While Bruce couldn’t surf himself at Manu Bay on the training day because of a head injury that required stitches, he was one of at least a dozen supporters on hand to help out. That included local lifeguard and surfer Chris Malone and DK’s adult

“They were such a help,” Bruce says of their expertise and enthusiasm for adaptive sports. DK had also arranged with Raglan Surf Emporium for the use of its jetski to tow the adaptive surfers out to where the waves were breaking. While they were all capable of paddling out themselves, this meant their energies could go into catching at least two waves in 20-minute time segments, emulating competition heats. “I wanted to make the day really worthwhile for them,” DK says. • Adaptive surfing, as both a lifestyle and competitive activity, is fast growing worldwide with prospects of becoming a Paralympic sport.

asha Skye’s individual flare and groove are undeniably evident. I met with the artist, Skye, to chat all things about her works and life as an artist. Skye’s medium is predominantly oil in which she works her magic. Her paintings are usually portraits, in which a theme of feminine empowerment naturally occurs. She sells these works as both originals and prints, available at Jet for purchase. The artist attends Whitecliffe where she studies fine art however still comes home to Raglan every weekend and as much as possible -as it is home to herself, and the community has given her so many opportunities for which she is thankful. Skye also appreciates the art scene in Raglan and the number of like-minded creatives within the community. The artist is also enjoying her studies, explaining how she is studying alongside all art students at Whitecliff, such as fashion photographers, which allows room for diversity and inspiration. Skye’s work really speaks for itself with its beautiful intricacies being the result of talent and hard work. When I asked about the meaning behind her works, Skye explained that there’s no complete theme nor determinant behind them. Rather, every work

should have some meaning or deeper message-even if it’s just an emotion that has been captured within the moment of creating. Some of Skye’s most recent work is the collection of stickers Skye created in her last semester. My favourite among these was a stencil styled print of a polar bear, along with the message ‘lucky for you, it cant hire a lawyer'. Some of the stickers among the collection alluding to climate change were planted around Auckland city, the perfect place to serve as a gentle reminder to viewers to care about the environment. The artist wants people to ‘get thinking’ which she achieves. Skye’s stickers have also been planted around Dunedin and the town here in Raglan. Zasha Skye is a woman on a mission, and I think she is going to achieve some pretty radical things. The artist is creating works intuitively and doing what makes her feel good. Her playing along with messaging matched with her undeniable creative talents has made some pretty iconic works and I can't wait to see Skye’s future works and see how she grows as an artist. he Local Rag Caught up with the team from Raglan Rock about the team's new premises.

Raglan Rock have recently moved to Riria Kereopa Memorial Drive. Tell us about the new premises and the reason for the move. Like all great Kiwi businesses, we started from the kitchen table back in 2012. We’re lucky, as our business is all about taking people out into nature, which is essentially our main office. Previously, we have operated from and stored our equipment in the gear shed at my house. But after 8 years of growth, it was time to find a new premises so we could continue to grow and expand. The owners of the Wainui landing site were really interested about working with local business and came up with the awesome concept you see on site today. It’s essentially three shipping containers that have been stylishly joined together with an open working deck space. The flow works really well for the customer experience and we couldn’t be happier with our new space. How long has Raglan rock being operating now? We have been operating for 8 and a half years now. Working with educational providers from all over the country and trying to boost our presence in the adventure tourism sector. Also picking up 3 business awards and Silver Qualmark in the process. Tell us about the development of the venture and what you offer. We’ve called our new base “The Adventure Centre.” It’s become a real passion of ours to not only promote Raglan Rock, but to help put Raglan on the map as a real ‘destination’ for adventures as a whole. We have two different aspects of the business. Firstly, is the adventure tourism facet; we offer rock climbing, caving and canyoning. Our Nighttime Glowworm Canyon tour is definitely a big hit for visitors to the area. Although it’s great to see we are

10 | Raglan Chronicle Magazine Issue August 2021

getting more people that are interested to try out caving and climbing! Secondly, is outdoor education. Working alongside other Raglan businesses we are able to provide schools with the full school camp package; accommodation, catering and a full range of activities. From bush survival, caving, canyoning, rock climbing, to archery, mountain biking, tree climbing, surfing or kayaking. Describe your range of clients Anyone and everyone from 5 years old up to 100. As long as they have a sense of adventure and moderate fitness, we have activities for families to experienced outdoor enthusiast. When the boarders were open, we took people from all over the world. Now we are lucky enough to have an amazing domestic market with Kiwis excited to come and explore their own backyard. What’s new at Raglan Rock in 2021? Oh, lots of cool things! We have our new premises and alongside that a new shop. It’s been a great addition to the business to be able to display our Raglan Rock clothing and other great outdoor adventure brands. We hope to see this facet of the business grow as we become more established at our new site. The growth of the business has opened up new job opportunities; we have Anita Alderman joining us as Shop Manager and Group’s Coordinator and have been working alongside Wintec to be able to offer guide positions to some alumni graduating from the Wintec Outdoor Recreation Diploma. We have also been working with Liam, head of the new Raglan Area School outdoor Ed program, to offer the best opportunities possible to our local tamariki. There has also been a big effort within the business to promote females within the outdoor industry. We’re proud to say that we have equally as many females as male guides/ staff. Currently, the outdoor

industry is primarily male dominated, so it is great to be leading from the front and providing equal opportunities and training for all our staff. What do you have planned for future years? We are excited to really identify Raglan as an adventure destination and in turn continue working on providing jobs for the local community in eco-tourism. We are also teaming up with some other cool adventure companies to bring you some new and wild experiences. So watch this space! How do people get in touch ? Contact us via email at info@raglanrock. com, Call us on 027 645 3547 or come down to the Adventure Centre and pop into our shop to say hello. "Best adventure in Raglan! Wonderful canyoning experience. Very professional and patient guide made us feel completely safe. My device loving kids had a fantastic time. We also went rock climbing. A bit nerve racking but Travis (our guide) was fantastic. We will definitely return for both these experiences. Can't recommend it highly enough!!" "Our own rain forest adventure! We did the night tour down the river and abseiled down the waterfalls. Was amazing abseiling down the waterfall in the darkness. And then chilling out with a cup of tea on the rocks of the river amongst the glow worms. Felt like we were well off the grid and in our own rain forest adventure." "Amazing Caving Experience! Had an amazing time caving with Kyra last weekend. I was pretty nervous but she was so friendly and professional, I soon relaxed and loved every minute. Awesome experience, I can't wait to do it again! Would highly recommend it!"

GIVING BACK: R AGL A N LOC A L GOES FULL- CIRCLE WITH R AGL A N FOOTBA LL CLUB K AT I E L O W E S

I

n small-town Raglan we share thankfulness for community members that turn up and fight the good fights that we can’t always participate in. A salute to roadside collection teams, lifeguards, coastguards, fire team, and prime responders. Without these people Raglan wouldn’t be such paradise. However, without throwing ourselves into a flaming inferno, how else can we help?

I spoke with Reuben about giving back to the Raglan community through coaching. He has started to coach the Raglan Paaua’s alongside Jess and Lee Poolton. Every year the Raglan Football Club in partnership with Waibop Federation and New Zealand Football Association offer a coaching course at Te Uku. With a flourishing Football Club comes the need for more coaches, more committee members and more hands-on-deck. Reuben’s dad Bernie was part of the initial group of parents that wanted to bring soccer to Raglan kids back in 1978. It’s all thanks to the iwi who enabled a local group to use the space for recreation. Reuben’s dad Bernie notes key players in this process: Eva Rickard, Ellen Dando, Eric Petchell and Clint Baddeley. Everyone, kids and seniors alike, must be grateful for this recreational use of the land. Prior to this, the NZ defence force used the land for barracks, but it is iwi land. Reuben remembers heading down there as a child, “We were picking up the glass and stones out of the ground before there were football grounds”. Reuben recalls New Zealand reaching the World Cup finals in 1981-82, “That was half the passion, we all wanted to be soccer stars, we played football at school, football at home we were going football crazy.” Sheryl Hart was a cornerstone of the Club, formerly known as the Raglan Rock Riders. Sheryl pushed things on in the early days. Reuben recalls the aggressive school bus drivers that would load up the kids and take them to the Hamilton games, “We would roll out of the bus and say, ‘Who’s got boots today?’ it was hearty”. I asked Reuben what sort of songs the kids would sing on the bus, “Trash-

songs like, ‘2, 4, 6, 8 who we gonna THRASH today’”. One thing that remains key, is that back in the late seventies the club was formed primarily for the kids. “It was all about the kids,” recalls Reuben, “Another person to thank is Gordon Jowsey. The junior club was very powerful, many teams from Raglan were undefeated”. One thing that has rekindled Reuben’s passion for soccer is the team-sports aspect of the game. He wanted his daughters to participate in a team sport and thought that soccer might be a good place to start. Reuben remembers being in the under 7’s team by the time NZ made it to the World Cup Finals, “If we scored one goal it was maybe enough. It was all about winning and losing. In the first game we might lose by ten, and in the next game we might lose by one.” I asked Reuben what strong childhood memories he has of playing football in Raglan, “It was always a buzz, it was all about friendship, we were quite competitive us boys. The big thing for me was being able to score goals and the breakdown of the dynamics of the team. From these base friendships we were able to perform well together. We were all at the Raglan Area School and we used to like going to away games into Hamilton, we used to walk barefeet down to soccer, our boots were cracked, and the apparel was rugged.” Reuben talked about the psychology of the sport and how important team sport is for childhood development, “The sport pushed me on in many ways, it raises the bar. It’s the journey of the year, a long-term thing, it gets you involved with something. It’s about fitness, keeping them running and testing their spirit. I talk to my team about being a team not just a bunch of players. In Raglan there’s individualised sports: surfing, skating, those are self-searching sports, but a teamsport balance sets you up for life. Football carries across cultures, social groups and agendas.” I asked Reuben about the coaching aspect of his role, “Soccer is about work at home, kicking a ball, watching soccer on TV and seeing how the game works. Coaching is such a collective make-up socially, there are different energies and

There is nothing differentiating any more, it’s all the same, everyone is the same. It’s a good thing to do rather than just ‘take’ waves and rides. Team sports broaden the horizons. Forget the surf report, it’s actually the kids turn.” When he coaches, Reuben gives images that help the kids visualise the game, he says, “It’s like a fish and chip packet blowing

down the pitch with ten seagulls fighting over it. But soccer is not about that, soccer is about space”. I asked Reuben what it feels like to be doing a full circle, “It’s giving back to the community you were born into. There is so much scope for girl’s football now. You set a bar and get them achieving as high as possible. I tell the girls it’s not what you can’t do, it’s what you can do.”

aglan artist Jean Carbon’s recent exhibition of her silk art and designed fashion in Tauranga was ravishingly received.

The July to August two weeks exhibition at the Art Lounge NZ attracted hundreds of visitors, including fashionistas interested in Carbon’s unique textile design. The exhibition titled “Reflection on Dawn” featured hanging drops of silk displaying a soft flow of mandarin colour, with swathes of silk floating gently in the air. “I was inspired by the colours of sunrise experiences on the clifftops near my Raglan home” explained Carbon who has been involved with the Raglan art scene for many years and is known for her contribution as organiser of the popular Raglan Art to Wear event.

12 | Raglan Chronicle Magazine Issue August 2021

After sixteen years teaching fabric technology, Jean Carbon completed a Bachelor of Arts in Fashion Technology at AUT in Auckland and continued on teaching her unique technique from her beautiful purpose-built studio in Raglan. Students can stay in separate selfcontained accommodation next to her Raglan home whilst participating in Jean’s live-in workshops learning the art and techniques she uses. “My passion is fabric, its history and origins, and the many ways it can be patterned, coloured and decorated to create garments or works of art,” Carbon’s textile art and fashion utilises Shibori, an ancient technique of resist dying, and clamp blocking to pattern sumptuous silk fabrics. Carbon enjoys travelling the world to obtain her fabrics from places such as Tanzania, learning the art of Shibori from traditional craftspeople while

staying with them in remote villages. Carbon often combines her love of mountaineering with her fabric pursuits. She has been a regular guide on the Silk Road. Carbon generally works with silk, finding it to be a perfect medium with its range of weights and textures to allow a large array of colours, effects and textures both vibrant and subtle. “Although this form of dyeing is rather labour intensive it enables a more targeted approach towards the pattern design and its placement into a unique fashion garment or piece of art” she clarified. Her work, which also includes scarves, cushions and garments, is sold and exhibited throughout New Zealand and she is available for bespoke commissions of artworks and one-off garments.

he grand old lady sitting pride of place near the top of Bow Street celebrated her 90th birthday a couple of years ago with little fanfare.

From the first pouring of concrete in 1929, the Raglan Town Hall has seen many iterations in her lifetime but she continues to be a well-used community building. Raglan Town Hall committee believes the hall is a huge asset to the community. “We work so hard to maintain and enhance it, and would like to reach out to the community to take a deeper sense of ownership, belonging and care towards it.” The hall committee is calling out for new committee members and a new maintenance manager (this is a paid position). “Keeping the hall as a community-run facility is important, it gives us ownership, guardianship and a deeper sense of pride” She is and was a labour of love, with stories told of the community pouring the handmixed concrete up makeshift ramps by the wheelbarrow load to lay the first foundations. Like many buildings of her era, the town hall was built in Art Deco-style to follow the latest of trends of the time. She may have been all glamour out the front but out the back the toilets were cleared weekly by a night cart contractor– you can still see the night cart hole if you look below Raglan Radio. Those keen enough to climb through the night cart hole snuck into the movies free of charge. Back then, local government all over the country took a strong role in building public entertainment venues. Raglan Town Hall was no different, she was a main source of entertainment for the locals up until the 1970s. They may have been months, if not years, out-of-date but the movies shown would have provided escape from day-today life and a chance to catch up with friends and family. The hall still has the projector room above the main entrance, which is now used for storage, and the ticket booth is now the broom cupboard to the left of the main entrance. By the 1980s, she was all but derelict. The windows were all

broken, piles failing and the only occupants were nesting birds. Due to the hall’s poor condition Waikato District Council meetings were held at the fire station. The initial maintenance work was led by Pablo Rickard and done by the local health and fitness trust. The vision was to create a much-needed gym for the rugby boys to train. Armed with brawn and a bit of know-how, they re-piled and reinforced the floor, with help from other community members to paint and fix the interior. In 1994, the community claimed back the town hall management from the WDC and established a hall committee, as subcommittee of the Raglan Community Board. Local creative Rosie Worsp designed the iconic colour scheme for the hall in the 90s. Many locals have dedicated hours of work towards the hall's upkeep and development - Wayne Morris, Steve Soanes, Pablo Rickard, Leo Power, Clint Baddeley, Jocelyn Hartstone, Patti Mitchley and Kay Warren to name a few. The grand old lady gets plenty of use these days and according to the WDC she is one of the most sustainable halls in the district. There are weekly afterschool activities, dancing, boxing, plus health and fitness in the gym downstairs, Nia, community meetings, funerals, weddings, workshops, live music gigs, theatre and arts events. The hall committee initiated a targeted rate for the hall and the Raglan Old School Arts Centre to provide funds for maintenance and enhancement of the building. Over the past four years, local Gavin Melgren has repainted the entire hall to highlight the Art Deco design. The interior has had a full repaint in a new colour scheme, bringing more attention to the stage and enhancing the design details. The next project on the committee’s agenda is to refurbish the women’s toilets area. Pop into the Raglan Library and chat to staff about how you can be part of the Raglan Town Hall committee.

he Karioi Project is dedicated to reducing these threats in their area. The Raglan-based community group recently collaborated on the short film ‘Karioi’, presented by Patagonia as part of their 1% For The Planet environmental grants programme.

Narrated by surfer and Patagonia Global Sports Actvist Dave Rastovich, the film tells the story of the The Karioi Project as they work to save the oi, restore the maunga, and in the process create a strong, vibrant community group connected to the land and sea around them. “As a surfer who has been lucky enough to have surfed around the world and seen the great work coastal communities are carrying out to look after their shared ecologies I would have to say that Raglan's effort to care for the country, and especially the migrating seabirds that call that rugged coast home, offers one of the most inspiring stories of working together for the benefit of all local creatures. I often speak of the Karioi project when hoping to inspire

communities to work together and protect their home land and seas.”– Dave Rastovich "We’re excited to be sharing our story with the rest of the world, as a way to highlight the urgent need for local community action to protect biodiversity to maintain the world's ecological processes,” adds Karioi Project manager Kristel van Houte. "We hope our short film will encourage and inspire more people to do the same." The Karioi Project has contributed over 40,000 volunteer hours in the last 10 years, restoring and carrying out pest control in 2,500 hectares of native coastal forest. This work has resulted in the return of breeding ōi, (grey faced Petrel), a locally threatened taonga species to the maunga. At the same time the group has delivered environmental education to hundreds of local kids. Providing much needed employment in conservation and ecological restoration to young adults and school leavers has been another major driver. The Karioi Project initiative has so far employed 17 people, including several

graduates from the Manaaki Ao education programme run in partnership with Raglan Area school. Student-led with an inquiry-learning and community-based philosophy, the initiative supports students' learning and helps develop concepts and skills focused on environmental sustainability, ecology and innovation. Patagonia is guided by its mission statement: ”We’re in business to save our home planet”. Founded by Yvon Chouinard in 1973, the outdoor apparel company began in Ventura, California and today works globally, including in New Zealand. A certified B Corporation and founding member of 1% For The Planet, Patagonia is recognised internationally for its commitment to product quality and environmental activism – and its contributions of more than US$145 million in grants and inkind donations to date. ‘Karioi’ will be released to watch online on Wednesday, August 18, 2021.

fter decades of globetrotting and cooking for the likes of Bill Clinton and Will Smith, chef Dylan Clegg has chosen to make Raglan home - and the talented foodie has wasted no time discovering the best surf spots, or in bringing his own distinctive flavour to local hot spot ISO Café Bistro. Having spent time in glamour spots like Bracu, Raetihi Lodge and Lochmara Lodge (New Zealand); as well as Australia, Greece and France, Dylan’s culinary credentials also include the Winter Olympics in Japan. Having only recently settled in Raglan, he admits to already being invigorated by the local lifestyle and community. “I’d been here for the surfing a few times and just fell in love with the place,” he says, “and I was looking for a total change in lifestyle from Auckland. I’ve had my fill of city living. “The opportunity to work at ISO with such an exceptional group of people really sealed the deal for me – that and the opportunity to enjoy awesome surfing literally on my doorstep.” Originally from Sydney, Dylan has also spent many years in Marlborough where his parents now live. His passion for food has seen him travel the world, despite ‘falling into’ the profession almost by accident. “I was working as kitchenhand while I was at school, which gave me a good insight as to what goes in the kitchen and I loved the buzz of it. The opportunity for an apprenticeship came up and I grabbed it and it’s been something I’ve really enjoyed. “It’s something I’ve always done well at and I’m fortunate that it has allowed me the opportunity to see the world. However, with a desire to see myself in a place where I want to settle, Raglan just ticks all the boxes.” In his role of Head Chef at ISO, Dylan joins a team who share a similar passion – both for Raglan and the hospitality industry. From Diego Nicholson (from Argentina), a former lawyer who is now general manager and the ‘meet and greet face’ of ISO,

to other team members; there is a genuine love and appreciation for small town Raglan as a place to live and play. All enjoy outdoor activities and providing high calibre hospitality service despite their varied backgrounds. For Dylan, the role is ‘a dream come true’. His new ISO menu launched last week and has already attracted positive feedback from many locals and visitors. “I love working with fresh seasonal produce, sourcing as much of it locally as we can,” he says. “I like to live a healthy lifestyle and try to reflect that in the menu also - keeping things clean and simple, but obviously full of flavour.” Calm and quiet in the kitchen, Dylan prefers to let his food make a statement. The modern European menu offers up delights like crayfish ravioli, paprika roasted cauliflower, slow cooked beef short ribs and wild mushroom risotto; catering well for gluten free, dairy free and vegan diners also.

Coconut and lime pannacotta.

Headed up by owner Matt Taggart, a former world champion masters hydrofoil athlete, ISO is a result of his long held dream to create a memorable place for people to eat, drink and hang out. A huge amount of thought has gone into the overall design; which includes a separate outdoor area and fire, comfy seating with power points for laptops, space for corporate meetings, friends to spend time and a commitment to support local artists and musicians. “I think there’s definite pride in being part of this really special team,” says Matt. “There’s a shared desire to create something special and the addition of Dylan and the new menu is really exciting for Raglan.” ISO is open Thursday to Tuesday from 9am-11pm. Regular happenings include Sunday Roast (Sunday 3pm-9pm), Bubs & You (Tuesday 9am-12); as well as community fundraising events and supporting The Karioi Project, the Raglan fire brigade, Billy Stairmand (Tokyo Olympic surfer), Raglan Community House and Raglan Karioi Trail Run.

ECZEM A – WH AT’S BELOW THE SUR FACE?

very day we see people come into the Eitchy, Dispensary seeking relief for eczema; a dry, inflamed rash of the skin that often has no easily identifiable cause. It affects 1 in 3 New Zealanders at some stage of their lives and is especially common in children.

Topical products such as creams and ointments can offer relief of dryness & itchiness, for example our naturopaths formulated our Eczema Relief Cream specifically for management of eczema. It contains herbs which may help to reduce inflammation in the skin and the likelihood of infection, as well as specific oils to help repair the skin’s barrier. We often recommend this followed by an ointment such as Manuka & Kawakawa or Calendula & Chickweed to seal in the moisture and create a barrier. However, topical treatments only manage symptoms. It is vital to consider the causes & drivers of your eczema and work to address these. The below are the most common we see: FOOD INTOLERANCES Food intolerances are less obvious than food allergies but can build up over time and result in

inflammation in the body, including the skin. The two most common culprits for eczema are dairy and gluten. Although we recommend that with any long-term dietary change you seek advice from a qualified practitioner, you can safely trial cutting out dairy and/or gluten for a few weeks initially to see if this improves your symptoms. However, if you also have gut symptoms and/or coeliac disease in your family, do not cut out gluten without first getting screened for coeliac disease. GUT HEALTH Linked to food intolerances, the gut can play a large role in eczema presentation. Avoiding the foods that cause you inflammation is a good starting point. However, an easy way to make a start on good gut health is taking probiotics. The strain most widely researched for reducing eczema symptoms is Lactobacillus rhamnosus, LGG. STRESS Most of us know that stress affects many areas of health and skin is no different! It’s been shown that stress can be a big trigger for those who experience eczema. Finding ways to manage stress therefore is

THE N ATUR A L SOLUTION WITH NIKKY JANSEN

key; exercise, mindfulness exercises, spending time in nature, or finding ways to reduce your workload. ALLERGENS & IRRITANTS Eczema can also be caused by contact with allergens and irritants in the environment e.g. chemicals in the home or workplace, exposure to dust mites, pollens, pets, or even strong soaps and laundry detergents! Start by noting where on the body it appears (e.g. hands) and considering what you are touching throughout the day (e.g. strong dishwashing liquid, sanitisers, soaps, etc.). When practical, swap any strong or chemical laden products for a gentler, more natural alternative, for example a natural alcohol-based hand sanitiser or Eco Store body & home products. For further support please call or pop in and speak to one of our qualified practitioners. Raglan Herbal Dispensary (07) 825 7444 6 Wallis Street, Raglan www.raglanherbaldispensary.nz

Good for everyone. BM (Photobiomodulation) can significantly accelerate healing, whilst P providing drug free pain relief. It is effective over a wide range of conditions, including the side effects of cancer treatments. PBM acts at a cellular level, reducing inflammation allowing stressed cells to utilise oxygen again, regenerating ATP - cellular energy. Swelling reduces, pain resolves and healing is kick started. This is SCIENCE not MAGIC. For over 50 years Scientists have documented the positive effects of Red and Near Infra Red light treatments with no reported side effects. There have been over 500 randomised clinical trials (RCTs) and over 4,000 laboratory studies published. PBM has been proven more effective and safer than pharmaceutical anti inflammatories over a range of musculoskeletal conditions. ATP Therapy introduced PBM in Te Awamutu in 2013 and Hamilton in 2015. We are now excited to bring PBM to Raglan in conjunction with “The Natural Solution.” Phone Karen 0274773632 or visit atptherapy.co.nz

ith 20+ years’ experience in beauty therapy, I have an extensive understanding of what it takes to create beautiful, healthy skin. In recent weeks clients have asked the following:

YOGA RAGLAN YOGA LOFT 021 0244 2248 www.raglanyogaloft.co.nz

“I only use warm water and a flannel to cleanse my skin, is this, ok?” – no it is not. The skin secretes sebum (oil) and excretes sweat, toxins and wastes. It is covered in bacteria both good and bad. Add to this makeup, grime, and environmental pollution and we have a sticky, oily layer covering our faces. Imagine this is the oily, greasy waste on a dinner plate. Would you clean it just with warm water and a cloth or would you add detergent? Cleansers are an essential part of a good skin care routine. They create a clean, clear palette for any further skin care, allowing better product penetration. Medik8 the professional beauty therapy product I choose to use has a variety of cleansers to treat every skin type and condition. I am happy to consult, diagnose and prescribe the correct skin care products for you to create healthy, happy skin. P: E: FB:

INTRODUCING R AGL A N C A NDLES

T

he Local Rag caught up with Vanessa and Josh from Raglan Candles to learn more about their enterprise.

How did the idea of Raglan Candles develop? The idea first came to us while we were having dinner one night. We had a candle we bought from one of the big retail outlets burning on our table. Out of curiosity, we took a read of the ingredients and we were very amazed to read that the wax was made from Paraffin wax which is a petroleum byproduct. We love being eco-friendly so we really wanted to bring New Zealand and the World healthy, natural, and deliciously scented candles! What sets your candles apart from others? We are proud to bring the ‘Raglan’ name to all parts of the world while giving more for our planet. All our candles are made from certified pure soy wax from sustainable sources. Our candles and centrepieces have a coastal touch. We have an exclusive Raglan Edition, four candles inspired from four beautiful places in Raglan which are crafted to take you to these places with their delicious scents! All of our candles are made with love from us to you. Describe a typical day on the job From candle making, to accounts, to improving the website, social media and contacting new clients, nothing makes us happier than working on something that we love and doing our part for the environment! Where are you selling the candles? We have 35+ stockists around New Zealand from the top of the North Island, all the way to Otago in the south. Our candles are stocked at cafes, homeware shops, florists, online gift shops and more! We have three local stockists here in Raglan selling a variety of our ranges which are SWOP, Raglan Surf Emporium, and the Raglan Museum. Please don’t hesitate to visit these awesome shops! What has the response been like? We are overwhelmed with the positive feedback and great response from not only our lovely community here in Raglan, but from all our clients over the world. We had a big demand from our Aussie friends for our candles so we were excited to announce last month that we have updated our shipping locations. We also have a few international clients from Asia and the Americas who are very interested in stocking our products in their boutique shops which is very exciting! How do people get in touch? You can find your local stockist or contact us on our website at www. raglancandles.com or our email at raglancandles@gmail.com Please do not hesitate to contact us for any custom orders too!

SH A M A NIC SOUND JOUR NEY WITH SIK A

A

magical evening of shamanic visioning and sound healing.

The didgeridoo forms an important foundation for Sika's music, however he also uses drums, native flutes, voice and a broad selection of historical Maori instruments. Sika plays emphatically in-the-moment, as his beloved collection of natural instruments open him and us to spirit. His deep sonorous voice adds to the soundscapes, as do foraged natural objects like leaves, sticks, bones and shells. Other sources of sound such as water, fire, trees, animals and wind are used with the ultimate intention to build soundscapes that enable us to leave time and enter a trance. Old School Arts Centre, 5 Stewart St, Raglan, Waikato Saturday 21 August 2021 7:30pm – 9:30pmTickets from eventfinda.

FEATURE NEW BUSINESSES I N TOW N

fresh

The Local Rag keeps you up to date with new businesses launched in our community as well as new ownership of existing businesses. This month we feature Otis and his new lawn mowing venture, Sparefins, an innovative idea to replace fins and the new Harty's store on Wallis St who have introduced fishing gear.

T

here are plenty of stores where you can buy new fins for your surfboard, but it's hard to find just the replacements you need to complete the set you already have. We both lost fins while surfing and encountered this problem. After talking to some people in town, it seemed like we were not the only ones. Most surfers have spare fins laying around. That's why we started Sparefins, a marketplace where people can buy and sell their fins. There is probably someone who needs just the fin you no longer need. And if you lost one yourself, you can use the filters on the website to find just what you are looking for. This way, we can help each other out. Everyone saves money, and fins are being reused. The link is www.sparefins.co.nz

fter a few years being a stay home Dad I was trying to figure out what I would do. A good friend of mine made the suggestion.

Since I was already doing the grounds at a local backpackers and with my work history it seemed obvious. Section maintenance just kept coming back to me. It was my first job for the city council looking after pensioner homes. Also being a horticulturist gives me a better appreciation and care for the environment I work in. It's been a really positive experience so far . I have had a lot of support. Sometimes people on the street ask me how the business is going. Which is also great. I'm really enjoying the job,I love being outside, as well as the smiles from people when I'm done. If you wish to get in touch I have an ad here in the chronicle and also a Facebook page under "Raglan Grass".
