Phil McCabe: “Raglan can be proud.”

or so laidback a town, Raglan’s sure seen its share of protests over the decades.

Back in the 1970s, of course, it was the Eva Rickard-led mass occupation of local land not handed back to Maori after its use as a military airfield during the Second World War. Fast forward to this century, to a Sunday morning early in 2012 – ironically just after Maui Dolphin Day, an event highlighting the importance of the marine environment – and a similar number of protesters turned out over a very different issue, the impending threat of seabed mining off our coast. The short, silent protest may not have garnered anywhere near the national media attention of the 1978 land rights occupation but

longtime environmental campaigner Phil McCabe still recalls it as a “goosebumps” occasion in Raglan’s recent history. Placard-bearing adults and children lined both sides of the oneway bridge across Kopua estuary while Phil – soon to assume the role of chair of Kiwis Against Seabed Mining – handed a potent written note through the wound-down window of a passing car carrying mining industry big-wig Andy Sommerville. “We love our marine environment. We are here. We are strong. You will not take our sand,” KASM’s message read. Nine years on and with the sands of our west coast still intact, KASM – an incorporated society born back in 2004 right here in Raglan – waits now to hear the final outcome of its

4 | Raglan Chronicle Magazine Issue February 2021

protracted battle with Trans Tasman Resources. The fight has gone all the way to the highest court in the land, the Supreme Court, where the self-described New Zealand based iron ore company has appealed a Court of Appeal recommendation that resource consents granted to TTR should be re-examined by the Environmental Protection Agency. Both previous court cases involving TTR “have fallen in favour of ocean protection”, as Phil described the situation on Facebook late last year from Wellington where he journeyed to help argue KASM’s cause with the support of Greenpeace New Zealand. “We trust that for the future of the ocean, we’ll get another red light (from the Supreme Court).”

Historically TTR holds a permit granting exclusive mineral rights over 9633km2 of seabed off the west coast of the North Island, stretching from the South Taranaki Bight through to the valuable ironsands of Kawhia and Raglan. Company executives – obliged to consult with hapu – had come to Poihakena Marae that Sunday in 2012 when locals stood strong, galvanised into action to protect their iron-rich coast. It was a powerful “goosebumps moment” in KASM’s history, Phil recalls. The company itself has stated recently that if the preceding High Court and Court of Appeal decisions to strike down its consent prevail, it will be the end of seabed mining in Aotearoa.

The March 2012 silent protest organised by KASM in Whaingaroa Raglan.

“That’s what we want,” says Phil. “That’s what we’ve been fighting for since Day 1.” His ultimate hope now is for KASM not to exist because it doesn’t need to. Phil’s moved on from those heady days as KASM chair, but he’s in no doubt as to the relevance of the small homegrown organisation that sprouted 16 years ago when New Zealand’s Labour Government – with the backing of New Zealand First – passed the controversial Foreshore and Seabed Act, declaring the land in question was owned by the Crown. Back then a wave of prospecting permits were soon issued to several companies hoping to exploit the ironsand reserves in the west coast seabed – but the town of Raglan reacted, thanks to a unique

relationship between iwi and the local community. Academic Angeline Greensill, daughter of the late Eva Rickard, was the first to call a public meeting to alert the community of the need for consultation. Says KASM: “Experienced ocean folk, including surfers and fishermen and women, immediately recognised the threat to the entire west coast posed by the scale of potential mining operations. “They were stunned at the lack of regulation or standards surrounding these proposals, and realised it would be up to them to protect their own backyard.” From that time, says Phil, Kiwis Against Seabed Mining – ably led by earlier chairs including Gavin Melgren and Stephen Frew – did a

lot of incredible work fending off companies which were “rearing their heads and trying to push forward” by securing potentially lucrative prospecting permits. KASM – by then with a subscriber base from right across the country – blocked them outright, adds Phil. He’s clearly proud of peoples’ proactive stance and perseverance in the face of what has become an archetypal ‘David and Goliath’ battlefield. The group has spawned other significant protests along the way including a 350km upper west coast sea-paddle by then Raglan-based Australian Dave Rastovich to draw awareness to the threatened area. “If widespread seabed mining reaches the coastal waters of this country, the allure of visiting a once-

pristine place will disappear,” he said at the time. Local KASM and Greenpeace supporters also joined ‘Hands Across the Sands’ on Ngarunui beach, protesting the twin threats of strip mining the seabed and deep-sea oil drilling in New Zealand waters. Hundreds of locals turned out again for a ‘Banners on the Beach’ protest and formed a human chain against the threat of oil exploration off our coast. Phil believes Raglan can be proud this community was one of the first in the world to oppose seabed mining “with vigour”. KASM’s made a huge difference, he says, in fending off big greedy companies eyeing our coast. “If we want to save the planet we need to save the ocean,” he insists. “It’s all connected.”

aglan has been touted as one of New Zealand’s most eco-friendly towns by a top New Zealand environmental podcast, How to Save the World. News that, is perhaps not news at all to locals in the know. Co-hosts and producers Tim Batt and Waveney Warth recently travelled to Raglan to investigate our town’s many innovative sustainability projects after being convinced by Xtreme Zero Waste’s Rick Thorpe that Whaingaroa was worthy of its own featured episode. But, Waveney jokes, it wasn’t as simple as it sounded “I imagined we’d cruise down (from Auckland), do two or three interviews and then kick back and enjoy some combo involving local food, beer and panoramic views. But after we were hooked

in, Rick emailed every few days with more projects we absolutely had to include - ‘These guys are world leaders,’ ‘These guys were doing it before it even had a name,’ ‘These guys have mobilised half the town.’ Before we knew it we had nine interviews, which quickly became a two part series.” Interviews took place with Jacqui Forbes (Para Kore); Liz Stanway, (Whaingaroa Environment Centre; Food Waste Kerbside Collection); Fiona Edwards, (Whaingaroa Harbour Care); Kristel Van Houte (Karioi Maunga ki te Moana) Clare and David Whimmer (Permaculturalist living locally); Rick Thorpe (Xtreme Zero Waste; Raglan Community Energy); and Gabrielle Parson (Raglan Community Board; Raglan Naturally); The double episodes are pack with heartwarming stories, inspiration, and a rare

opportunity to step back and celebrate the sum total of our actions, which Waveney describes as “heaving the town’s entire infrastructure and physical environment toward a regenerative, thriving circular economy.” Check it out by searching for How to Save the World podcast on your phone’s podcast app, or connect with the website, blog and social media channels via www. howtosavetheworld.nz. New episodes are released every two weeks, an interview with James Shaw and a ‘deep dive’ on sustainable fishing are up next. A N INTERVIEW WITH DJ JA M IN-I AKA STEPHEN REID - FOUNDER OF T H E R A G L A N S U N DAY S E S S I O N S

Image | Geraldine Burns - g. design w: www.g-design.co.nz ig: @g.design_photo

Q. For how many years has Sunday sessions been up and running? A. 11 years this Feb. Raglan Sunday Session is apparently rated as the longest lasting weekly event in the whole country. Q. How did it originate? A. The vision was born through a whole lot of passion for reggae music. Myself and most of our friends were collecting our music on vinyl back then and were eager to just play our records together. We would gather at each other’s house all the time to play music and dance.. There were a lot more house parties back then! It came a point where it was like “hey lets do that somewhere where others can join the good times with us too!” There was no daytime music event available then and gigs were always Friday and Saturday night, but we worked all weekend or had young kids, so we needed an alternative.. Sunday was everyone’s day off, so Sunday it was! I just did it for fun. Our whole crew would turn up and have the best time. I guess it became kind of magnetic! Little did I know that it would evolve into this awesome culture. I just want to send big love to the OG crew! Q. What is the magic ingredient for the success of Raglan Sunday Session? Consistency. Regardless of the weather it was on all summer long and word travelled the country and the world.. Commitment to provide quality entertainment in a positive and inviting atmosphere and community support is at the heart of it all. Raglan people emanate that good vibe and I reckon it’s half the reason for the success. This community is so special and awesome! Together we’ve created a bit of a rebel culture, our Sunday worship is music, community, dance and celebration! It’s a great way to bring a sense of unity, and I think it did just that. They say “Music is the messenger” and I have to agree! Q. What are some of your highlights over the years? A. When I started to host international artists that I admired - and had their tracks on vinyl - and started to ask them to play at my parties. I was so grateful! Biggest performance highlights for me would be Eva Lazarus, Charlie

P & YT coming through with Mungo’s Hi Fi. The bucket list gigs for me were Norman Jay, Mad Professor and Vadim. Q, How has it changed over the years? A. RSS has definitely evolved with time as all things do. We’ve gone from the foundation of reggae music to a more open format. Some of the best international underground techno and drum n bass producers coming through are playing in little old Raglan on a Sunday now. Its like a mini festival each week offering lots of genres, but never mainstream music. Q. What do you continue to love about it? A. I now see the next generation joining in, bringing the same energy and good times as we did. It makes me happy to be able to provide a cultured event for them too. What I love the most is seeing people dancing in the daytime, catching up and reconnecting. Q. Tell us the story behind Vinyl culture and what you have created. A. I love holding a vinyl in my hands, putting the needle in the groove. There’s something really satisfying about buying a piece of vinyl. There’s always a story behind every single one of them too. The Sunday Sessions was actually born as a vinyl culture, back in 2010. That’s all we played, all day and all night! So it’s pretty much simply a 360 back to its roots, to honour the essence and encourage the culture A bit like most things, technology started taking over and DJ’s stopped buying/ playing records. They started playing with other tools like CDJ’s, all sorts of controlers, computer programs, USB stick and all.. I had to adapt. We all did. But what happened next is that the DJing with records was disappearing! I missed it often, for some of us playing records is a real passion, and to be honest you don’t even have to be a DJ to be awesome at it. You can just select your favourite songs, play them on a good sound system! It’s a culture that means a lot to me so I wanted to bring it back. The Vinyl Culture Club is an opportunity for collectors to come out of their closet and share their music with us all. I’ve allocated a timeslot strictly for vinyl connoisseurs which is 5-8pm every Sunday in the YOT Club yard.

Q. Who plays the Vinyl Culture slots? A. There are so many vinyl collections in Raglan, a lot of passionate musos around! Some are DJs and others simply collectors/selectors. All with one thing in common: We love collecting records, we love the sound of analog. The culture club goes from guys like the Roots of Karioi Rythym Selectors with classic reggae styles, some funky selectors like B-Rex Oren, to new young selectors like Judy Free and lots of undiscovered newbies! Every selector has a different story to tell through vinyl and every week has a new narrative. Oh and the great thing is we have a record shop in town called Ulo’s record shop run by Cian who also plays regularly at the Sunday Sesh. When you get paid for playing vinyl the golden rule is to buy more vinyl! Q. What have been some of your favourite shows? A. Weirdly and in all honesty, 8-10pm in the YOT Club yard on a Sunday (laughs) has one of the best vibes! It’s hard to beat. It’s neck to neck with playing at Festivals like Splore, Soundsplash, Sundaise & Ruapuke Roots festival being my fav.. Q. Any projects in the pipeline? A. I now prefer to collaborate with people rather than playing alone. There’s something uplifting about sharing the creative flow. So I’ve been working with Tux from Lost tribe Aotearoa lately and so I’m really excited to see where this goes. I’m also part of a crew called Blue Sapphire Collective, this project is amazing as I get to perform with amazing jazz musicians and burlesque dancers. It’s real entertainment and I love it! Q. What does your week look like in terms of playing music? A. Music is part of a daily ritual. I’m either putting a new set together for a gig or just trying to tidy up my music folders, planning and chatting with the artist for the sessions to come, and of course sneakily buying music to fuel my passion.. Q. Any plans or projects for 2021? A. Does anyone have plans for 2021? Ahahah I’m just going with the flow and mainly focusing on doing more of what sets my soul on fire!

YOUNG PEOPLE A FOCUS ON R A N G ATA H I IN THE COMMUNITY

I

n a world where coming of age might mean getting the latest iPhone, local organisation Poutama Rites of Passage is bringing back old values and traditions to help young people navigate the difficult pathway to adulthood.

Sometimes the relationship between mentor and young person continues once the rites are complete.

It was born in 2015 at Raglan-based kaupapa Māori organisation Te Mauri Tau, where youth workers Tiaki Coates, Madelin Watson and Rawinia Kingi asked the question – what’s it going to take to make transformative change in young people?

“The bonds that were formed run deep and are still growing. Seeing those young men, is like seeing a younger brother. I bumped into one the other day and he just lit up, and so did I. Its huge seeing the impact it’s had on everybody, including myself. It’s so much more than just the four days on the rite.”

“At the time we weren’t seeing that deep fundamental change we wanted to see,” he says. Tiaki remembers a kaumatua telling him - you don’t have to look far. And they didn’t, the trio very quickly realised that the answers lay within Te Ao Māori (the Māori worldview) which guided them to rites of passage. It meant taking young people into the natural world to talk about the stuff that matters – manhood, womanhood, sexuality, identity and other issues teenagers face, in a tapu (sacred) environment. Like all indigenous rites of passage, there are elements of challenge; to be vulnerable, to be alone with your thoughts, to be out of your comfort zone and to face some physical challenges. It’s captured best by a recent Taitama Rite for Boys participant who says, “Taitama will help me get through challenges and hard times. It’s made sure I know who I want to be in life” Like most ancient cultures, there is always an adult presence close by to provide a safety net. The adults are locals and come from a wide range of backgrounds, they too are trained before becoming mentor

Following Taitama Rite for Boys in November 2020, local mentor Ngaru Toka made strong connections with some of the young men and they often seek him out just to reconnect.

Tiaki likens the whole programme to a pōwhiri where young people are welcomed and supported in their transition from childhood to adulthood. Taitama Rite for Boys and Kōhine Rite for Girls are the first stages of the pōwhiri; a four-day immersive rites of passage where children are called through the wahara (gateway) and into adolescence. One of the points of difference in Poutama is the journey doesn’t end there; there is ongoing education and support for the participants following the rites. Tiaki says the second stage of the programme is like being on the marae atea, the space that lies between the gateway and wharenui (meeting house), traditionally used to express identity and build relationships. This is the education phase of the journey, where young people are reconnected with mentors to go through the Poutama curriculum. The curriculum for young women, E Hine has been piloted over a two-year period alongside teenage mothers at Fraser High Teen parent unit and Tiaki is introducing E Tāne the equivalent curriculum for young men in 2021-22.

“I want to become a mentor so I can share my stories and help young boys with their lives.” Taitama Rite for Boys participant

The natural progression for the programme is for the young people to be supported on their passage into adulthood and become mentors themselves, in doing so they enter Te Whare o Tāne or Hine (the house of adulthood). For some this may take longer but Poutama aims to support young people until they are ready. “I often think about the African proverb – if you don’t initiate the young, they will burn down the village to feel the heat. It’s telling us that without healthy, community-led rites, our young people will initiate themselves in potentially harmful and dangerous ways,” Tiaki says. There has been a lot of interest from around the country for the programme and Tiaki and Madelin say it is vital that Poutama Rites are community-led to build local resilience and ensure that the relationships made are face-toface community connections and not reliant on technology. On behalf of the whānau involved in the recent Taitama Rite for Boys, Madelin and Tiaki would like to extend their gratitude to the Whaingaroa community and WEL Energy for supporting the boys of our community via donations, sponsorship and mentorship. SUR FING FOR FA R M ERS T H E L O C A L R A G H A D A C H AT T O M AT T E K I R K L O C A L C O O R D I N AT O R F O R S U R F I N G F O R FA R M E R S Like me, Stephen is a keen surfer who works in the rural industry. He knows how good the ocean is for your mind and invited a few of his clients to the beach one night. They absolutely loved it and it has just grown from there. How did you become involved in the initiative?

Tell us a little about yourself Matte? I’m Married with two kids (Miller 8, Cora 6) who attend Te Mata school. We run a local property management business and I also work as an Area Manager for Pioneer Maize seed. My passions have always stemmed from all things outdoors, so we spend a fair amount time in the ocean and at the mountains come the Winter time. Explain how Surfing for Farmers came about? SFF started 3 years ago by Stephen Thompson in Gisborne.

3 years ago I was lucky enough to gain a spot in the Kelloggs Rural Leadership program. Part of this program was to complete a research paper on any topic that would benefit the Primary Industries. I decided to do mine on Mental Wellness. In particular, what causes depression and anxiety and what strategies people use to help manage depression - My research can be found here: www.ruralleaders.co.nz/ building-mental-wellness-in-therural-sector-matte-kirk/ Time and time again, when I interviewed farmers, most of them said that if they had “more time off the farm” and “more exercise” they would feel better within themselves. SFF provides both of these in spades, so I knew it was the right initiative for me to be involved in. Depression and Anxiety is so common amongst us, but quite

10 | Raglan Chronicle Magazine Issue February 2021

often we are slow to recognise the signs. Unfortunately, the rural sector has a really high suicide rate, mainly due to the long, hard hours and the rural isolation. I am an ex dairy farmer who suffered from burn out due to over working myself. If I can help just one person recognise the signs early and get some help, I’d be stoked. What kind of local response have you had so far? Epic. We are averaging around 15 per session, some driving 2 hours just to get here! Do you need to be an experienced surfer and what defines a farmer? Nah not at all. 9/10 people who turn up have never surfed, some haven’t even been in the ocean for years. Whatever you farm, wherever you farm it, you’re invited. What do you think are the key benefits of Surfing for Farmers? Farmers have told us their mental clarity is way better after the session. We have a lot of guys coming back week after week. The funny thing is, it’s actually not about the Surfing, it’s more about connection and feeling the oceans energy wash away some

of life’s stresses. It’s nice for them to be connecting with others who are dealing with the same farming challenges and thanks to our generous sponsors we are able to put on a BBQ and some beers after every session. How do farmers get in touch and get involved? Give me a bell to register, then just turn up on the weeks that you can make it. We run every Wednesday, 5:30pm at Ngarunui beach – 027 222 2403 Local shout outs: Massive shout out to the surf club crew who have invited us in from week one to use their facilities. Raglan Anexa vets who have provided us with BBQ’s and cash to help run each week. Rabobank is a national sponsor who are there in the water with me each week Waikato Rural Support Trust these guys have also been there every week helping me run the show. If you are finding things tough on the farm, Rural Support is a free and confidential service, run for farmers by farmers 0800 RuralHelp.

We also welcome our new Marine Ranger Anna, who is continuing our advocacy work for Māui Dolphin at local boat ramps for the third consecutive year. Big mihi to Raglan Gardeners Kia ora Raglan, We wanted to say a BIG THANKS TO YOU for a great summer so far! Before the holidays we made some changes to only accept plastic containers 1, 2 and 5 + clear soft plastic. This community has been xtremely great at adapting to this change. We’ve had some great conversations with visitors to site about alternatives to non-recyclables 3,4,6+7 and we thank you all for continuing great washing and squashing and keeping your recycling crates clean well organised. Likewise, our food waste collection has seen some really clean compostables coming in, with much less plastic fruit stickers and non-compostable items. Please double check what you put in is able to be broken down into healthy nutritious soil you'd like to grow your kai out of. After another super Soundsplash last weekend we want to thank Brian & Naomi for hosting another epic event and thanks to all the community members who came to join the Xtreme Zero Waste team for the clean up on Sunday. Here’s to the rest of a beautiful summer in Whaingaroa, let’s remember our reusables: Drink bottles, keep cups and click clacks. Let's choose to reuse. Let’s do soft what we can to refuse single use, support local, and + CLEAR plastics refilling local too.

It’s awesome to see you all making the most of our drop off times (every day except Mon+Tues) and this community has been buying up compost quicker than we can re-bag it, thanks for being a part of closing this loop!

t’s been more of a marathon than a sprint, but the Creative Space building at the Old School Arts Centre is on the final lap to the finishing line. Like most new builds, the project has had its ups and down; the forecast expenditure never quite stacked up and unexpected problems arose which delayed the final outcome. And of course, being a community space and funded by the generosity of sponsors, funders, local businesses, individuals and good old-fashioned fundraisers, work has continued as the money has become available. The seed for the build was planted way back in 2012 when the community were invited to share their ideas about the future of the Old School. Susanne Giessen-Prinz suggested a kiln room and the idea of a Clay Shed was developed and added to the Raglan Community Arts Council (RCAC) strategic plan in April 2013. Fundraising began in earnest and a new kiln was purchased and Susanne says, it soon became clear that with the kiln in the same space as the clay classes there was no room to grow. The tin garage that was the Clay Shed was no longer fit for purpose

and Mike Goodison developed the plans for a new building. Susanne once again began community fundraising while RCAC chair Rodger Gallagher applied for grant funding; the project needed a third of the cost confirmed before they could apply for a rant from Lottery Community Facilities. “We achieved the initial dollar hurdle in August 2017 and were then granted $150,000 by the Lottery Grants Board,” Rodger says. It was decided to manage the project in-house to cut costs and in May 2019 the groundwork and foundations began with an end date of November of the same year. Since then, the building completion date has been pushed out many times. Seeing the build competed will be a momentous occasion for Rodger and Susanne, who has led many community fundraisers over the years and continues to do so. Rodger has undertaken a lot of the project management, and as well as that he’s completed and submitted countless funding applications to numerous funders. He’s also carefully managed and accounted for all the money along the way; no coin was spent without Rodger knowing exactly how it was contributing to the build.

“It’s great to see the new Creative Space building that the local community decided to build in 2013 come to fruition. In January, we had drama rehearsals taking place. And other groups are asking to use it,” Rodger says. “I am very proud to be involved in such a beautiful community project but cannot take credit. It takes a community to raise a child, the creative space is that child,” Susanne says. The building was opened with a blessing and ribbon cutting in March 2020 and Rodger says they are planning a future celebration to mark the building being in full use and thank all of the donors. Although the project has taken longer than expected, the building hasn’t been let sit idle; the clay shed space on the ground level has been fully operational since July 2021, with kids’ and adults’ classes, and over 50 members using the space for clay creativity. The first floor was given the tick of approval for public use by the council in December and the first event was held shortly after; fittingly it was the Old School Christmas party for staff and the many volunteers. Even after the official opening, there is still work to be prioritised;

a lift installation one of the larger and more expensive projects to find money for. A mural is being created by Clay Shed artists to recognise the many organisations, businesses and individuals who have made a donation to the Creative Space building. Designed by local ceramic artist Sarah Bing, it will take pride of place on a wall in the community space upstairs.

Raglan Medical Update FEBRUA RY 2021

New members of the Raglan Medical Team:

Heather Peart RN - Hi, I am Heather. I have recently joined the team at Raglan Medical as a Registered Nurse. I have lived in Raglan for 30 years. My nursing has largely been working in a medical centre with some previous accident and medical experience. I look forward to working alongside a skilled medical team and serving the community.

Dr Adrian Wilson is originally from Canada, where he trained and worked prior to moving to New Zealand. He enjoys all aspects of being a G.P. and particularly appreciates the opportunity to get to know his patients better over time. After working in Auckland for two years, he has joined the Raglan Medical team as a permanent GP. Adrian is enjoying settling in to the Raglan community with his wife and two young daughters.

Dr Maihi Brown - Kia Ora, My name is Maihi Brown and I am the new GP Registrar here at Raglan Medical this year. We moved in to town early in December, from Palmerston North where I spent the last 3 years working as a medical officer with the NZ Army. I bring with me my beautiful wife Kira, and 3 children; Kaihiki (4), Lilly (2), and our son Hannemann (4months). I am originally from Northland, but have spent a good portion of my youth in Hamilton, and many weekends coming out to Raglan to surf. We are stoked to be here, and to be part of the Raglan Medical team. If we don’t meet in the clinic, hopefully we can catch a few waves together instead?

Top-rated waterfront backpackers for sale

I

t’s rated among the top 10 hostels in the country – and has just had its “busiest winter ever” – and Raglan Backpackers is now on the market as owners Suz Hall and Tim Duff call time on the venture they took over 15 years ago. “We have absolutely loved it,” Suz told the Chronicle this week of the harbourside backpackers and Waterfront house, off the end of downtown Wi Neera St. But the couple are also looking forward to their next challenge in life, and have already started new projects in Raglan which involve permaculture and growing food. Suz has been a supporter of the local horticultural society, the community garden and the crop swap initiative, and admits

“it would be lovely to get land and dedicate (ourselves) to that”. Meantime Suz remembers the excitement she felt way back on visiting the backpackers one day to hire a kayak and learning that the couple who had built the business from scratch a decade before were thinking of selling. For Suz, and Tim (who had co-created Raglan’s first surf school a few years before), it was an opportunity to live their dream. “And we enjoyed building it up,” Suz says of the business, which already had a reputation among international backpackers as ‘go-to’ accommodation. She recalls a couple of their earliest guests – before cellphones were commonplace

– consulting their printedout itinerary which included a photo of the ‘famous’ internal courtyard, with its hammocks strung up all around, before even checking in at the office. They were obviously thrilled they had the right place, she laughs. While Raglan Backpackers and Waterfront house have always been first and foremost about accommodation, Suz and Tim have added a thriving kayak and surfboard rental business aimed at guests and day-trippers. “It’s kept things interesting,” Suz says, adding how satisfying it is to see the pleasure people get from paddling or standing up on a surfboard. And these Covid times haven’t deterred the backpackers. There is hardly any downturn in business says Suz, adding “if people can’t go to Bali, they come to Raglan”. Admittedly the international market has largely given way to the domestic meantime “but lots of Kiwis are travelling”, Suz says. The business is being marketed as a lifestyle opportunity, with both the purpose-built lodge – sleeping 38 in rooms off the central courtyard – and a separate upmarket house that was

occupied by the original owners but is now typically rented out to groups, including; families, corporates or leisure groups. It can house up to 22 people, but in the peak season the rooms are rented out individually.

The complex also has the luxury of both a sauna and spa pool. Suz and Tim are looking forward now to handing over the business they’ve nurtured so long. “It’s time for someone new to put their stamp on it.”
