harlie Irvin reckons she was always a bit of a petrolhead, but when her parents wouldn’t agree to her buying a motorbike – they thought it too dangerous – she went gliding instead. Some four months on the Raglan 19 year old completed her first solo flight, and feels now the sky really is the limit. “I have fallen in love with it (gliding),” Charlie told the Chronicle recently as she eagerly anticipated her next date with the great blue yonder. The timing depended on the weather but it would be a Wednesday, Charlie’s regular day off from homeware and gift shop Zinnia. Since undertaking a course at Piako Gliding Club a few months ago, she’s ventured back to Matamata Aerodrome regularly midweek to learn more about the art of flying and to experience that adrenaline rush after the towline’s released. The former Raglan Area School student no longer aspires to go into business or on to university. “I am leaning towards aviation,” Charlie admits.

It all started when her dad Graham – the face behind the counter of Big Poppa’s Kettle Corn cart, a fixture at the bottom of Bow St – bought her a late Christmas voucher from the gliding club, which had set up as usual at Raglan airfield for a part of the summer holidays.

“My grandfather used to fly little model gliders by remote control,” Charlie recalls. “And Dad thought it might be a novel way to connect to Grandad.”

Finally Charlie was ready for her first solo flight.

As it turned out, Charlie was so enamoured with that first flight over the Whaingaroa harbour mouth she went back a week later for a birds-eye view of the family farm, marae (Motakotako) and wetlands in the Phillips Rd area. She was hooked. By March she was attending her weeklong course with the Piako club, which is run by volunteers. She and Graham ventured to Morrinsville together, where he sold his “dangerously good” kettle corn each day while she indulged her flights of fancy a short hop away in Matamata. Charlie explains how the five students and three instructors did multiple circuit

Lessons also included instruction in care of and respect for the aircraft, and emergency protocols like how to manage at different heights if the tow rope was ever to break.

“The scariest bit was when I was on tow … coming off the ground … and realising it was truly up to me (alone) to get the glider back down safely,” she recalls. “I couldn’t just let go of the controls,” she adds with a laugh. “You just have to take a deep breath and focus.” One of the instructors captured a triumphant Charlie on camera just moments after she’d landed. Charlie’s keen now to progress to “soaring pilot”, and to complete a 90-minute flight all by herself. And she thinks that come next year she could well be ready to pursue some sort of a career in aviation.

fter hours of deliberation, I believe that there is no greater formation of adjectives to describe the art created by Seb Hart and Ziggy Knuiman than ‘Acid Mince’. This avant-garde psychedelic art form is the union of the inner mind workings of Hart and Knuiman in an impressionable, detailed and unique way. I conversed with the Mincers to learn more about them, who they are and what they do. Born and raised in Raglan, Seb and Ziggy are two independent artists and friends who have naturally collaborated and formed Acid Mince over time- describing it as “A joke that went too far.” With pen as their medium, the general creation process consists of Ziggy starting off the artwork with a character and Seb ‘doodling’ in the rest. Seb defined their source of inspiration as “The pooling of every life experience - whether it is traversing transcendental imaginary realms, skateboarding or going to a gig at the Yot Club.” Despite their works’ intricacy and perceived intimacy, there is little or no deeper meaning behind them- the boys are

just creating as they feel and doing what they love whilst having fun with friends. The logical process is so simple, heavily contrasting the intense outcome that is alluring and, quite frankly, rare. Acid Mince’s works may look familiar, as it has featured on Raglan Roast coffee cups and on murals done in collaboration with our mate Sim Bla at the Yot Club, Raglan Surf Co., Indi's Coffee, and Workshop Brewery. As well as having their own clothing line, the Mincers have also been working with local surfboard shapers Mark Camenzind and Eddie Young from Space Shapes Surfcraft to customise boards. Recently, the creators have been working on works for their current exhibition ‘Inner Space’ which will feature Acid Mince, their friends and fellow artists Annika Clover, Korrin Beavan, and Ciaron Lannon. The exhibition runs from May 28th and runs through until the 7th of June, thanks to Chris Meek, who has very kindly lent the artists his epic space at 21 Cross St. Acid Mince has an ecstatic appreciation for the Raglan community and their supportive friends. Seb and Ziggy explained that they “Owe everything to this community and

are fortunate to be surrounded by so many creative and amazing individuals.” Seb and Ziggy are just about the most humble people I have ever met, but the evident can-do attitude and willingness of Acid Mince is admirable. Without much intention aside from just ‘doing what they love and creating what looks cool’, they are pioneers within a new generation of art culture. This culture is one where fewer young people are purchasing physical artworks and buying more clothing than ever. The limited quantities of Acid Mince’s collections mean that there is no overproduction, and they are producing slow fashion- which sustainability and logically is the smartest thing to do. In a world where it is so easy to view artwork online, it is fantastic that Acid Mince presents their talents on everyday objects, such as coffee cups, surfboards and clothes. And as for the future of Acid Mince? Seb responded, “in outer space.” I don’t think that is a far fetched idea. Seb and Ziggy (Acid Mince) are also part of the Inner Space Art Collective who are exhibiting at the Studeo Gallery at 21 Cross St until June 7, 2021.

NEW LE A SE OF LIFE FOR INFO CENTR E J A N I N E J AC K S O N “It has taken a year of a lot of hard work by a lot of people who understood the importance of this place,” Lisa says. Much of the work behind the scenes to reinvigorate and rebrand the site was focussed on providing a better experience for visitors and the wider community. “Sharing information is just one aspect of what we provide. We want to share the stories from our place, build relationships between our visitors and community, and share the values that are important to us,” she says. Entirely operated by a team of volunteers, the iHub’s guiding vision is weaving experience through people and place. Lisa reckons it’s the volunteers who will provide much of this vision as they promote the authentic stories of Raglan. “They are the ambassadors; they bring a wonderful flavour to the iHub and they are all so invested in the community,” Lisa says. Before moving to Raglan several years ago, retiree Charlie Watt had enjoyed sharing his time with various organisations in Hamilton and wanted to do the same in his new hometown. “When I moved here, I was looking for somewhere to volunteer. At the iHub get to meet so many different people, that’s really what I like about this place,” he says. As well as sharing the town’s stories, the iHub is filled with Raglan merchandise, art, books, food items, jewellery and clothing created by local artists. “We don’t want to be in competition with what is already happening in town but we really want to provide another opportunity to promote the amazing creatives in our town,” Lisa says.

The iHub will also be highlighting the environmental issues that are important to the community and guiding people towards ‘stepping lightly on the land’ as they enjoy their holiday. “We will promote reusables, remind people to take their rubbish and talk about freedom camping and the responsibilities that go with it,” she says. Waikato District Council has given the iHub a few years’ lease rent-free and Lisa says the long-term goal is to be selffunded. HOW A STRONG K AUPA PA H A S K EPT THE FL A M E BUR NING FOR ENVIROSCHOOLS IN R AGL A N K AT I E L O W E S

n 1992 a group of councillors from Hamilton returned from The Earth Summit in Rio De Janiero with the aim of developing education for sustainability. With the help of Waikato University, a pilot eco-schools programme developed into Enviroschools. The incorporation of indigenous Māori perspectives was critical. Programme developers worked with Te Mauri Tau, based in Raglan, from the onset. The Toimata Foundation was established in 2015 and supports both Enviroschools and Te Aho Tuu Roa. Enviroschools is now a global movement, inspiring others. I have noticed throughout our kindergarten’s Enviroschool journey, that the process encourages teachers to include children’s voices and to work toward a whole-schoolapproach. In 2017, Sisson & Lash highlighted the importance of the children’s space being their domain, essentially empowering children to witness their activity transforming the landscape. Social science would name this ‘consciousness raising’, or ‘collective consciousness’. I spoke with Anna Cunningham, an Enviroschools facilitator, “One of the core guiding principles is student empowerment. How do we create change makers? If students are getting that empowerment when they are young, they are going to be the change in the workplace”. In my opinion, the Enviroschools kaupapa has the potential to promote a ValueBelief-Norm-Theory, that is, that new ways of being become the norm. Anna works across 25 schools in Waikato, Raglan Area School being one of them. She said Enviroschools really works when it is woven into the curriculum, when it is simply how a school can BE. However, she also noted that teachers are stretched, and if the environment is seen as an ‘extra’ then it is easy to forget about it. Instead, she urges that Enviroschools is most effective when it is everyone’s job, addressing social sustainability, cultural sustainability and ultimately economic sustainability, “It’s not just about the biophysical environment, it is about connection to nature, connection to community”. Whaea Maddie at Raglan Kindergarten echoes the importance of community. She spoke with me about Raglan’s embedded organic lifestyle, Xtreme Zero Waste being a huge influence, as well as Liz and Rick’s permaculture farm. Enviroschools encourages Early Childhood Education participation, and the Toimata Foundation has designed resources specifically geared up for ECE. The Raglan Kindergarten have been working on their Enviro programme since 2013, firstly achieving a Bronze Award, followed by a Silver, and in 2019 were awarded the Green-Gold Award.

One project that stands out for Maddie is the building of an adobe wall in the kindergarten grounds. She described the process of working with community members Guy and Paul and talking with tamariki. Maddie described the process of understanding the ground we live on, the pepeha, the maunga, when building the clay wall, “It was teaching us, we were all the ako. It might corrode again, but it becomes a conversation”. For Maddie, Enviroschools inspires tamariki to take care of things, show manaakitanga and to respect sustainability. She shared her feeling of privilege to be part of a journey that strengthens connections within the community and to gain a deeper understanding of what our community does.

Dr Asah in 2017 announced that, “Children’s self-exposure to nature was the strongest predictor of a number of aspects of adulthood environmental citizenship”. Raglan residents are spoilt with access to nature, landscapes, experiences. We are also embraced by a community with a strong Enviro-consciousness, so, what’s next for Enviroschools in Raglan? Anna shared that teachers will be given the opportunity to visit Xtreme Zero waste and hear from Plastic Free Raglan with the intention of discussing waste management streams. Enviroschools is always evolving and currently there are big discussions about climate change. Schools are empowering students to redesign waste systems, recycling is at the end of the line, but how can we reduce waste?

icky Brzeska always yearned for a piece of land, somewhere she could carve out a lifestyle – be in tune with nature. And five years on from the high-flying corporate life she led as a PR agency executive in East London, that’s exactly what she’s got. Only her piece of paradise is literally half a world away ... up a long drive off a gravel road in rural Te Mata. It’s here that Nicky’s now-thriving flower farm CROP is located, facing back towards a distant Raglan. “I think we really manifested the dream,” Nicky told the Local Rag as she recalled how hubby Johnny, a geotechnical engineer, used to say that one day they’d open the doors and look out at rolling fields. Not that they didn’t have a “beautiful English walled garden” of their own at the one-bedroom flat they shared in Hackney with toddler Jack and new baby Finn, now both at Te Mata School. “But I always had a pull for getting my hands dirty,” Nicky insists. “I knew I wanted to do something outside.” So they sold up and left with no jobs to go to, envisaging a different lifestyle here in the antipodean country where South African-born Nicky’s parents and brother had settled some years before. Priced out of Waiheke Island, where they’d looked at buying a year earlier, the couple ventured to Raglan. And Nicky fell in love with the potting shed if not the house – which was in a “complete state of disarray” after years of being rented out – on what is indeed their dream property. The five-and-a-half acre lifestyle block has views of rolling fields just like Johnny had promised. So what have they done with all that acreage? It took the biggest mind-shift, Nicky admits, but the couple now have their own sheep and cows grazing in the paddocks. And across the driveway from the potting shed turned workshop there’s a comparatively “tiny” but very important bit of land for flowers, the zinnias still in bloom a fortnight ago despite it being the off-season. Nicky loves her workshop and its proximity to the garden. Nice and close for lugging buckets back and forth, she reckons, and a haven from the rain, the sun and sometimes even the kids. Most importantly, it’s where she puts her dried flower bouquets together. “Everything I grow has a long vase life and can be dried.” Lockdown last year was no problem. “We were in full bloom here and I would cut and dry for bouquets.” The blooms were so plentiful, in fact, she could spread the love by placing her bouquets in rural bus shelters and friends’ driveways. Nicky reveals she has Raglan Flower Co to thank for getting started as a grower. She was in awe of the floristry at what was then called Raglan Buds, and asked Kristel Lindfield for a job.

They’d met by chance on a Te Mata School trip to the zoo. Kristel recognised Nicky’s passion for flowers – along with her planning skills – and had a better idea. “Why don’t you grow for us?” she asked. The upshot is that Kristel turned up one day with black fabric and cloche, plants, seedlings and dahlia tubers to get Nicky started. “She threw me in the deep end and I was petrified!” Three years on, however, everything’s indeed come up zinnias if not roses. Nicky now has what she describes as a diversified business model supplying Raglan and Hamilton florists, plus New World in Palmerston North. She also supplies a weekly wholesale flower market in Frankton during the season, which is spring through into summer. Meanwhile her dried arrangements have become an out-of-season staple. Nicky’s done “consumer pop-ups” mid-winter at Raglan Garden Club, just off SH23 in Nau Mai business park, and more recently has been busy supplying mini bouquets of dried flowers or single blooms for ‘A Taste of Raglan’ gift hampers. The 44 year old is particularly pleased too at having pulled off her succession planting plan with a mass of colourful blooms that were ready in time for Mother’s Day last month. As well as being a self-confessed soil geek – often spending more time on the soil than on the flowers themselves, she says – Nicky’s big on research to give her business an edge. Putting all the old PR management skills to good use, she follows industry trends in Europe “quite closely” and sources unique varieties of seed from overseas.

“It’s quite challenging, I’ve got to be a year ahead,” she insists when it comes to anticipating those trends from, say, muted and blush blooms one year to brights the next. But what Nicky loves most about CROP Flower Farm is the “mindfulness” that comes with planting seeds, spacing them, looking at their roots and such-like. Hands in the soil stuff, she explains, all the time observing in minute detail the changes in nature. “It’s so grounding.” She also loves having a job she can fit around her young children. “That’s very important to me.” The seasonal rhythm of Nicky’s flower farm fits too with another important job she’s taken on. It’s from about now she gets busy each year wearing quite a different hat as Raglan Arts Weekend coordinator. The role draws on her experience in PR management back in Britain in what, she laughs, now feels a lifetime ago. It’s not only about growing the iconic long weekend event but there are also registrations, sponsorship and grant money to see to. Nicky will then look forward to being back in the garden, working again with nature. “What a beautiful circle (of life),” she says.

paragliding and shattered my back which put me in a coma for 10 days. I was a very changed man. On one hand my logical science brain was working well. I drew the plans and built a mud house but I was super fatigued and emotionally very, and I mean very, unstable and I did some things that I am not proud of. But then the most devastating thing of all - Noni got sick and eventually died. I had sole charge of the kids and a very raw head injury. This has been by far the most difficult time of my life. How have these experiences influenced your interest and subsequent journey into healing practices beyond Osteopathy? In this crazy time my outlet was music. This evolved into me starting a music therapy centre for people with learning support needs www.neurogenesis.co.nz. I want to offer this opportunity to Raglan and will be offering sessions one or two days a week in the area.

he Local Rag caught up with Dave Ward-Smith who recently returned to Whaingaroa. Originally an Osteopath, Dave has always had an interest in health and wellbeing, however life has delivered some unimaginable challenges for him and his projected path was interrupted. At present Dave is feeling vital and energized due to incorporating fasting, breath work, ice baths and saunas into his daily life and he wants to share his learning and help others in his community. Many will also know Dave as a local muso and additionally he has created Neurogenesis - a registered charitable trust that offers a wide range of musical activities. As a musician he believes in the power of music for healing - emotionally, physically and neurologically.

Dave you are a well known identity in Raglan and I understand after a few years away you have returned with new knowledge and skills. First of all to give some background to those who don't know your back story, tell us about your arrival in Raglan and what happened to you and your family.

All this time I was trying to repair myself using whatever I could. Normal medicine was of no use apart from nearly killing me so I looked elsewhere. Eventually I got into Wym Hof which involves ice baths and breathing techniques. I then added in sauna and my results were amazing so I created www.neurobreathe.co.nz . We operate in Raglan and Hamilton. You also have the fasting aspect to your work. What benefits have you observed in yourself and others?

Well, I arrived here in 1999 and saw in the millennium with my future wife, Noni. We fell in love with Raglan so we uprooted from the UK and came over with Noni pregnant and my new degree in Osteopathy that I studied for in France and the UK.

I still was not as good as I wanted to be and a friend suggested fasting. I haven’t looked back! In my tendency to do things to the extreme I started coaching fasting and then created a retreat at the house that I built in Raglan www.fastingnewzealand.com.

We quickly integrated into the Raglan culture and I was working as an Osteo while Noni had the real job bringing up our now two kids, Phoebe and JJ. All was going swimmingly until I had a horrific accident while

I feel that I have come back from a long way down and now I feel better than I ever did, even before my big accident. And it’s not over yet! I love to share things and pass on knowledge. That's what makes me happy.

ew Zealand Music Month kicked off with a bang at Raglan Area School. Ex-students Merehia Hutchins and Sasha Kirkwood performed a range of covers such as the crowdpleasing ‘Moana’ along with their own originals, keeping the audience entranced despite the simplicity of just a single guitar and vocals. The younger students clapping along added to the show's aesthetic. What a solid start to Music Month. Next up, Lost Tribe of Aotearoa brought a classic New Zealand reggae vibe to the stage. They set the tone with a rendition of Spongebob Squarepants, neon lights and a smoke machine that sent the little kids crazy. Lost Tribe express great messages through their songs, like ‘Badman’ which highlights domestic violence in New Zealand. Their music is rich in Te Reo Maori and connects us to our roots.

The Swabs, an instrumental band playing traditional Irish music played on Pink Shirt Day which resulted in a colourful display of children dancing their hearts out. R EVIEW PROM ISED OVER A IR FIELD ACCESS ISSUE

aglan residents have been promised that the Waikato District Council will carry out an “independent review” before any of its controversial major safety work is done at the town’s airfield. The assurance – which came in a Facebook post by the Raglan Community Board – said the review would take into consideration suggestions put forward by the board and community members over the last few weeks. This was “to ensure that we are well informed and that the most balanced actions are taken”. The post added that meantime revised signage was being arranged, along with marking on the grass, to highlight the operational or runway zone. News of the review was cautiously welcomed last week by Alan Vink, the organiser of an earlier packed public meeting at the Town Hall supper room which protested council plans to fence off the airfield to residents.

“We have made a good gain, I think,” he said, describing the planned review as “an appropriate response given sentiments shared at the Town Hall meeting”. But he questioned how independent the council could be on the matter, how the review would be undertaken and by whom. He also noted that “many of us” in the community were still awaiting details of the so-called incident reports and risk assessment that the council had done over a year ago, and which led staff to recommend to the infrastructure committee the fencing off of the airfield. The twin red lines painted in the grass on the perimeter of the airfield – which in parts look more like a sobriety test for drivers than a delineation of the operational zone – aren’t the only evidence of recent council activity around the runway. Contractors have also kerbed and channelled a short section of Marine Parade, effectively denying dog walkers a wellused parking spot bordering the airfield.
