rom blues to roots – all the way from rocking downtown with the legendary Mudsharks through to partying decades later at packed Soundsplash festivals at Wainui Reserve – Raglan’s been on quite the musical journey over the past 40-odd years. And it’s put the once sleepy seaside town on the map not only as a surfing but also a live music and outdoor concert mecca. The emergence of Raglan as a “musos’ town” dates to the early 1980s, when the Mudsharks began regularly playing their own distinctive style of music to packed bars at the Harbour View Hotel. They were heady days, recalls original Mudsharks member Dave Maybee. A grandfather now, he still lives here, still plays and also teaches music for a living. The town really rocked back in the ‘80s, he reckons, particularly on ‘Mudshark Mondays’ when professional touring musos like himself, Sid Limbert and Peter Skandera – who also still lives here and also teaches music – got together and jammed at the historic Raglan pub. “We never ever rehearsed,” Dave told the Chronicle. “We were just playing with mates.” The gigs were the only live music to be heard around town at the time, and were soon bringing out the locals and getting them up on the dance floor. Dave says the formation of the Mudsharks owes itself to a chance meeting. He’d bought a property, settled in town in ‘81 and then ran

into fellow muso Sid – recently back from Utah – at the top of the divvy one day. Sid was busy running the local fish and chip shop downtown but the pair agreed to “let’s do something”, having played together years before.

reputation got another fillip when Gary McCormick’s celebrated ‘Raglan by the Sea’ doco screened on television in 1987, putting the band’s up-tempo gigs at the Harbour View in the national spotlight.

They asked at the Harbour View which of its nights were the quietest, then set about pulling in the punters each Monday with a unique brand of rock ‘n’ roll and blues.

By 1989 the Mudshark Monday scene was fading, with one or two musos moving away. While the Raglan Club would much later play host to a series of revival concerts featuring Midge Marsden and the Mudsharks, they’d never regularly jam again at their traditional haunt.

Dave categorises the Mudsharks as having been more of a country-meets-blues-meets-jazz kind of line-up really, depending on whoever happened to join the band along the way. Another musical influence came from the late Clarry Cresswell, a local saxophonist to whom a corner of the Harbour View’s front Veranda Bar is now dedicated. “Remember we are Kiwi musicians, we have to be versatile,” Dave explains of the evolution of the Mudsharks’ rollicking, cross-genre style that quickly captured locals. While Sid and Dave brought “old-time stuff, maybe blues roots” to the band, Liam Ryan of The Narcs fame brought a jazz element. Dave McArtney, formerly with Hello Sailor and Pink Flamingo, also came on board with rock. Then of course there was the iconic Midge Marsden who, Dave adds, perhaps truly defined the band’s bluesy leanings. He’d played with Midge in Wellington back in the 70s, in a band called the Country Flyers. Various musos lived and jammed in town on and off, Dave recalls, and the Mudsharks’

Any live music void about town was not to last long however. In the early ‘90s, two ‘Strawberry Fields’ music festivals were staged in successive years on farmland near Te Uku. These three-day events, organised by local promoter Jim Rowe, were described by Wikipedia as “influential in the timeline of New Zealand rock music festivals”. But it wasn’t to be ‘Strawberry Fields’ forever, as protests from neighbours stymied plans for a third festival locally. Back in Raglan town, meanwhile, a more intimate live music scene was getting off the ground at the newly established Tongue & Groove (now The Shack), across the road from the pub. Come Saturday nights, the cafe space was cleared of its formica tables to make way for a dance floor. Bands like Trinket (later The Datsuns) and Auckland rockers Shaft/D4 flagged Hamilton to play Raglan, while local gigs such as Band Wars and Ten Guitars added to the mix.

Brain Ruawai, left, and Naomi Tuao of Cornerstone Roots.

Dave in the Veranda Bar with framed ‘Raglan by the Sea’ lyrics written by the late great Clarry Cresswell. By the new millennium Molasses cafe (now Wyld) opposite Tongue & Groove was also hosting live music nights, as were The Centennial Bar (now Orca) and other venues. Raglan audiences were treated to a host of iconic Kiwi bands, all the way from Trinity Roots and the Black Seeds through to the likes of Fat Freddy’s Drop, Katchafire and Kora. But it was a fully homegrown band that emerged around this time, Cornerstone Roots, which was to end up having a massive and lasting impact on the Raglan music scene. Raglan musos Brian Ruawai and Naomi Tuao had formed Cornerstone Roots with another local, Boyd Dixon, after a session at what Wikipedia calls the “infamous” Raglan Musicians Club, and they played a brand of music described as “raw and riddim focused with a mix of contemporary styled ska/roots/soul and reggae”. While Cornerstone Roots continued to expand its repertoire and reputation, Brian and Naomi had bigger plans. In 2001 they put together Raglan’s first Soundsplash Festival in the town

hall, promoting local acts along with many others. The festival soon had a larger outdoor venue, the Wainui Reserve, and two decades on is still going strong – “born out of the town’s live music scene”, as Naomi recalls. This renowned multi-genre, family-friendly music festival is now a fixture on the outdoor concerts calendar. There was a hiatus but six years ago the couple resurrected the festival, and these days their own grown-up children – both musicians – are also very much a part of the scene. Instrumental in keeping Raglan’s music culture alive along the way has been the opening of the Yot Club downtown on the corner of Bow St and Volcom Lane. It regularly hosts a varied mix of local and out-of-town talent, and during the past decade has also become well known for its DJ-ing Sunday Sessions which grew out of a passion for reggae music. Lost Tribe Aotearoa are one of the latest Raglan bands to have achieved success, after starting out through contact with Cornerstone Roots and by playing downtown at the Yottie. They were nominated for best roots artist next to Troy Kingi

and LAB at the New Zealand Music Awards in 2019. Last year they released their debut selftitled album to rave reviews. Cornerstone Roots meantime has played around the world including at Glastonbury in 2014. Brian and Naomi believe our young musos like Muroki, Reiki and Lenny have the perfect opportunity to accelerate in Raglan, thanks in no small part to ongoing tuition by longtime musos Dave Maybee and Peter Skandera. “They’re ready to pursue a career in music and it’s legitimate.” Dave agrees, mentioning a few other emerging talents like Sasha Kirkwood and Reiki’s sister Kaea who have also come through what he describes as Raglan’s very supportive school system. And of course Covid lockdown last year provided an “excellent” opportunity in which to create music, Dave says. “There’s some really neat talent (here) at the moment.”

ocal entrepreneurs Seam and Emily Mills took some lockdown bad luck and turned it into a thriving business growing mushrooms. Both were stuck at home; Sean an agent for Ray White at the time was working from home and Emily’s job managing West Coast Taco didn’t survive the lockdown fallout. It was a chance meeting with a former Raglan mushroom expert Lennart Prinz that sowed the spores for a business that has taken over much of their house and their lives. “It just felt right and meeting Lenny (Lennart) really set us in motion,” Sean says. Mushrooms by the Sea has grown from strength to strength since it was first dreamed up by Sean, and they now both work fulltime in the business. From growing the mycelium in agar jars to harvesting the delectable treats, the couple expertly combine family life and a busy mushroom growing operation. The laboratory is set up in one of the bedrooms in their Lorenzen Bay home, the laundry is a hot house of large pressure cookers sterilising the material the mushrooms are grown in, another bedroom and nearly every cupboard in the house is taken up with more mushrooms in their various stages, and the kitchen is for the harvesting end of the process. Outside is a portable unit where the final stage of coaxing this exotic fungal fare to fruition takes place and various patches in the backyard are scattered

with the spent mushroom waste which still show signs of the bloom. The couple are now selling around 15kgs of oyster and pink flamingo mushrooms a week at the various markets around the Waikato and their grow kits are also proving very popular. They also hope to expand the mushroom range to shitakes, which requires stumps of wood to provide the ideal growing platform. The mushroom venture has not been without its pitfalls; the tricky little fungi do best in the ideal conditions which means creating a sterile environment and getting the temperature and moisture levels right. “There’s been a bit of trial and error but I read a lot of the text books to help me out,” Sean says. Emily reckons it takes brains to do what they do and she credits Sean with that, but she puts a lot of work into the harvesting end of the production. She’s also the creative mind behind the recipes they share on their website and has plans to open a mushroom food truck to further share the fungi love. “The oyster mushrooms are so meaty and they don’t shrivel up like other mushrooms. We cooked a meal for four with twenty dollars’ worth of mushrooms and we had plenty of leftovers,” she says. For mushroom fans looking for a Thursday night treat, the couple are holding a weekly pop-up shop from 3.30-6pm at 20a Lorenzen Bay Rd. FLYING HIGH WITH TUR I J A C Q U I K AY H A D A C H AT T O T U R I E D M O N D S A B O U T H I S JOURNEY TO BECOMING A PILOT

T

uri Edmonds wanted a career in Aviaton and last month he completed his training to become a commercial pilot. Despite the upheaval in the industry due to the pandemic Turi has stayed focused on his goal. I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know Turi as like most, he has worked to help put himself through training including washing windows for his mum Celia’s local business. I’ve enjoyed listening to the progress of Turi’s journey and although he was a bit hesitant to talk about himself he did see this interview as an “excellent opportunity to influence other young kiwis and locals to follow their dreams”. Where did you grow up Turi and what local schools did you attend? I grew up in Raglan and attended Raglan pre-school, Waitetuna and Te Uku. Did you always know you wanted to be a pilot? Yes, when I was younger and would ride in the Airbus and Boeing aircraft I would love the take off and landing phase. It was something that I always aspired to become. When did you decide to seriously pursue this path? What was involved with training ? During most of high school I forgot about the dream of becoming a pilot as I thought it was unobtainable and too expensive. I moved my thoughts and resources towards starting a career in business, more specifically marketing. I attended the open day for the University of Otago

and was more-less set on starting a Bachelors of Commerce in Dunedin. In the last 4 weeks of high school my dad essentially gave me an ultimatum of starting my B-Com or pursuing the life long dream I’ve had of becoming a pilot. This was a bit of a shock to me as I let the dream float out the window, this required some serious consideration and evaluation. After a couple days of thought I decided that I did in fact want to pursue Aviation; this was mainly driven by my passion and wanting to have a job that I would enjoy, so I could wake up every morning and be excited for the day ahead. I knew this would be a hard long road but my heart wanted to follow it, it didn’t matter what challenges were thrown at me. How did Covid affect your training? Unfortunately the school I attended had to close in February this year as Covid made the school unprofitable due to the large number of international students vs domestic students, 300 students 170 staff and a wealth of knowledge has been lost from it. All the remaining kiwi students are in the process of being populated into different schools around the country. Everyone from the organisation was absolutely gutted, however things like this often happen in Aviation and it’s something we have to be able to move on from, adapt and keep going. What have you found the most challenging about the programme ? The programme has moments of extreme intensity and moments of calm. During the ground school exam phase and flight test phase the intensity can become quite intense as you are essentially building your CV through all your exams which are reflected in your results. Studying is also a must especially leading up to your exams and flight tests. You need to over prepare. To be honest there isn’t much time for people who want

10 | Raglan Chronicle Magazine Issue March 2021

to be lazy in the industry - you have to put in the work to get the rewards. For me work-load management during tests was the hardest part, keeping a clear head and focusing on the task at hand, it is a skill that all pilots learn and creating coping strategies for these high-workload/ stress situations. What do you particularly enjoy? My favourite and by far the most rewarding part of my training would have to be the cross-country flights. These are flights where you get the experience and hours required by navigating through the most beautiful parts of Aotearoa. From Hamilton to Kerikeri, Gisborne and further the sky is quite literally the limit. What would you be your word of advice to someone younger who’s looking at pursuing Aviation ? If you have a passion or interest for flying, I would recommend 100% do not let COVID-19 hold you back. Anything is possible when you put your mind to it. As stated many times, Aviation is a hard but extremely rewarding career path full of laughs, experiences, blood, sweat and tears. Once you make it, you will never work a day in your life again. There’s many ways you can approach your training one of which is you get a student loan, study through a school which is generally quite intense and more fast paced progressing you through faster or, you do it in a way that suits your lifestyle through a aeroclub. This is more pay as you go, at your pace, although this is great from my understanding some of it is not fundable through the student loan system however could be well suited along-side a part-time job. To start a career in aviation the groundwork begins in high school. You do not have to be a genius and get Excellences or Merits in every subject however it’s important to keep a few core subjects such as maths, science and english until year 13 although no courses

specify what subjects e.g physics, cal etc they do require a type of math, science and english. If you are interested in a career in Aviation, do not hold back and pursue what you love, please feel free to contact the Chronicle to get in contact with me. My goal from this interview is not to talk about myself but get more like-minded young kiwis and locals involved in this industry. What strengths of yours do you think have been particularly beneficial in the process of learning to fly? Determination and perseverance, in Aviation it’s important to never give up on the end goal and work hard to achieve your dreams. It can be tough but it will all work out in the end. Don’t give up! What is the next step for you? As covid has had a substantial impact on my training, as mentioned above, I will be moving along with 5 other cadets to Nelson to attend the Nelson Aviation College where I will complete the last three months of my training obtaining my cat C Instructors Rating. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? What is the end goal? In 5 years I hope to be still flying, aviation is an ever-changing industry and it’s hard to forecast what will happen in the next 5 years with the current instability in the job market. Initially, it has always been my dream to join the airlines for the likes of Air New Zealand and Emirates. However, since being in General Aviation flight instructing and small plane/ corporate flying has become an interest of mine and not just a gateway to the airlines. As flying is now a firm passion of mine I believe it will always be a part of my life and I will continue to work towards my goal of flying passengers around the country, or even greater, the world.

iver Knuiman grew up in Ruapuke and helped out her parents, Wayne and Penny with their family Wildcoast horse trekking venture. As long as she can remember she has had a deep connection with animals and consequently pursued a career in animal physiotherapy with a focus on horses. I caught up with River to learn more about her new equine muscular therapy. You grew up at Ruapuke River. I know it’s hard to reduce to a paragraph but can you describe your childhood in general and how has it influenced and shaped you? My childhood was very much the same as any rural kid - we just had 15 horses to go along with the rest of the farm animals. I spent a lot of time outside and with the rest of my family. We did a lot together, whether it was going out riding or some form of farm work. Living so remote has definitely instilled a sense of self and independence which I am very grateful for. Your parents Wayne and Penny own and run Wildcoast Ruapuke. What involvement did you have growing up and are you still involved? For as long as I can remember I have been helping out with the horses. At around 18 I began working as an official guide on the rides rather than just tagging along for the fun of it. I still am very much

involved, working mainly during the summer months. They’d be lost without me haha. My parents have always been self employed which has really set me up with understanding how to set up a business and run it successfully. When did you develop a really strong connection with horses? I think I’ve always had a strong connection with horses, but if I was to pinpoint a time it would probably be when I was first put on the back of my dads horse at the age of 12 weeks. When did you decide to pursue a career in Animal Physiotherapy? What training was involved? I’ve always known that I wanted to work with animals but didn’t quite know what avenue I wanted to go down. I completed a Bachelor of Science majoring in Animal Behaviour from Waikato University as the first step in figuring out what I wanted to do. From there I did some research and came across The College of Animal Physiotherapy based in the UK. I realised that I really wanted to go down that route, working with animals in a positive way to help their wellbeing. In all it took me 6 years to get to where I am now. Tell me about your new business and the services you offer? My business is called Equine Muscular Therapy NZ. I offer treatments focusing on the muscular aspect of the horse. These treatments can be injury preventatives for highly competitive horses, rehabilitation

after injury or even just a general wellbeing check for the much loved horse or pony. Regardless of what their discipline is, horses are athletes and much like their human counterparts they deserve to be seen to by a qualified practitioner. I offer personalised exercise and rehabilitation programs to get the most out of any horse. What would a new client expect from an initial consultation? During an initial consultation I take a full and extensive history of the horse and discuss any issues or problems with the owner. I then conduct a full body examination and treatment of any particular points of interest. I frequently will leave the owner with exercises for them to carry out with their horse, I am particularly fond of stretches and ridden exercises. How do people get in touch? I can be contacted via my website www.equinemusculartherapy. co.nz, email hello@ equinemusculartherapy.co.nz or my facebook page Equine Muscular Therapy NZ.

ronwyn Lowe wanted to work in the herbal medicine field for just a few years – to help make it more accessible to the general public – then get back to the garden. But that was a quarter of a century ago, the now 57 year old reflected last week, days after she handed over her long-standing Raglan business The Herbal Dispensary to new owners. When the Local Rag caught up with her Bronwyn had just spent the previous weekend farewelling regular customers as they dropped by the thriving seven-days-a-week business in downtown Wallis St. The dispensary might have already changed hands but Bronwyn was still “doing things” to help out before finally leaving for good. And while she was looking forward to more time in the garden – just like she’d envisaged all those years ago – she was also eagerly anticipating spending time with the grandchildren, both her own and partner Geoff Kelly’s. A proud Bronwyn says Geoff’s backed her all the way in the business, particularly in an ambitious move from Bow St to larger premises in Wallis St. This is where the dispensary truly became a destination in its own right. She reveals the pair actually met at The Herbal Dispensary. “Geoff came in to buy lip balm,” she says. That was 17 years ago, and without his encouragement Bronwyn reckons she wouldn’t have had the guts to buy the Wallis St property a few years later and transform the two former residential units on site (the second property is occupied by ULO’s Kitchen).

“Geoff had more vision,” she insists of a time when no-one quite believed that moving a business from the main street would work. “But now we’re part of a busy hub.” In all there were about seven moves before the current premises were found, Bronwyn recalls. She first opened up in 1996 in the old doctors’ surgery on Wi Neera St with just $3000 worth of stock. “It was a big deal in those days.” Having just graduated from the Waikato Centre for Herbal Medicine, she was keen to simply raise the profile of herbs as a natural health alternative then get on with her own garden. But the business soon outgrew the premises, so she moved it to where The Yard is now down Volcom

Lane. Next it was a move to the lower end of Bow St, followed by various shifts uptown. The final move to Wallis St allowed for a herb garden at the back, two clinic rooms, a dedicated dispensary and an organic food store. “When I began the business it was just me, and now it’s grown from between eight to 14 staff depending on the time of year.” Bronwyn insists however it’s support from the community that ultimately saw the dispensary succeed. She’s proud to have served third-generation customers – the children of longtime locals who now come in with their own young children. “It’s so lovely, that generational connection.” The business is now in the hands of naturopath Natalie Jacques, who worked for Bronwyn for a few years from 2014. She’s been based more recently in Mount Maunganui but says she always wanted to come back to Raglan. Bronwyn’s “thrilled” that the ethos of The Herbal Dispensary will remain the same with Natalie and her partner Loic Jonnart at the helm. “Loic and I met here too,” Natalie laughs. “He came in for a juice though.” Meanwhile Bronwyn insists Raglan’s “our forever home”. She and Geoff earlier sold their house alongside the dispensary and have bought a property in Mangatawhiri Rd that sits on two acres or so – an ideal place for a spot of gardening.

Hamilton theatrical collective Slip of the Tongue started the summer Shakespeares back in 1989 in Hamilton Gardens. Since the Hamilton Gardens Arts Festival began, a free/by donation Shakespeare has featured every year, also touring to Waikato towns (including sometimes Raglan). This year RAD company presented Two Gentlemen of Verona in association with Slip of the Tongue. SoTT provided behind the scenes skills (costume, props, lighting) while the RAD Company

actors are all from Raglan. The company included trained and experienced actors, high school students and first-timers, all performing one of Shakespeare’s comedies to a rapturous response.

Julia’s maid, Richard Potter Proteus’ father, Connor Marquand the dog (Crab) and all three the Outlaws. The musicians were local duo Wilkie Mac (Lynne Wilkins and Michael McKinnon).

In a casting approach of ‘the best actor for the part’, several male roles were played by women (a reversal of Shakespearean all-male casting!). The two young gentlemen, Proteus and Valentine, were played by Monika De La Cruz and Eleanor Clarke. Their comical servants Lance and Speed: Leila-Rose Skeates and Hanna Allourd. Julia was played by Ruth Hare and the Duke’s daughter Silvia by Jillian Doll. Mike Bell was the Duke of Milan, Liam Dingle the suitor Thurio. Resa Lange played

Tuesday’s Raglan performance was held behind the Old School Arts Centre. The audience of 150 or more enjoyed the magical nature of a twilight performance outdoors and rewarded the actors not only with laughter throughout the show, but a standing ovation at the end. The show played Te Pahu, Te Awamutu and the Hamilton Gardens Arts Festival and received funding from Creative Waikato and Waikato District Council.

he Monday & Wednesday Mainly Music group starts at 9.30am and comprises of 20 minutes structured music followed by unstructured play and eat time. It welcomes parents, grandparents and caregivers. Mainly Music groups are connected to churches, however participants from all religious backgrounds are welcome. The group is about collaboration as a community and connecting with our children through music. Cheryll Peart has been running the group for 16 years. She has established a warm, safe and loving environment, an ideal space for caregivers to share a cup of tea and swap stories of the trials and tribulations of parenting. The positive effect of developmental music groups for children under two (both premature and full-term infants) was shown by Dr Walworth in 20091. The infants in this study demonstrated more social toy play. A key consideration of this study is that infants attended music groups with their parents. The connections, attachment and positive interactions established during this type of socialising is exactly what matters, and this can be found at Mainly Music, just up the road at Te Uku Church. Here in New Zealand in 1990, Jo Hood followed intuition when she founded Mainly Music. Although since the 1990’s, the science behind the success of these groups is no longer intuitive, there is a wealth of scientific research that supports the positive impacts of community groups. So, how do community groups benefit us and our children? From a personal perspective, I relied on community groups to navigate my days as a new parent. I needed time to be out of the house, to have shared experiences with my children and most importantly, to prevent myself from obsessive house-keeping. It just so happened, that in safeguarding my wellbeing, my children received the gift of opportunities to socialise, connect and learn. One strength of making community connections during the early years is the development of the senses and social intelligence. Attending community groups such as, Whaingaroa Community Gardens (check out the tamariki garden), Te Mata Playgroup (Thursdays 9am-12pm), Raglan Plunket coffee mornings (every second Monday) and Mainly Music (Monday and Wednesday mornings), parents and caregivers are able to support their children in developing social intelligence, which, according to Marissa King is a

flexible mindset. Indeed, being engaged with community is a preparatory step for day-care, kindergarten, school readiness and, most importantly, fostering a love of life-long learning and participation. Marion Wright from Raglan explained that her children have all gained confidence by attending Mainly Music, “whatever age and stage they are in, there is always something they can participate in”. Some of her children are now at school and confident on stage leading a crowd. Marion shared that despite sometimes feeling alone in managing adversity, the connections made in community participation are incredibly healing and freeing, and that we are not alone. Marion is also involved with Foodbank, Whaingaroa Tamariki Touch Rugby and Adult Touch Rugby. Mirjam Koning from Raglan has been attending Mainly music for 14 years and during that time she has helped out with many of the roles that enable the group to run smoothly. Now, Mirjam runs ‘up front’ delivering the songs and movement and sparking joy amongst the children and carers. Mirjam participates in the Surfside community and expressed that Mainly Music introduces the church in a fun way, and that everyone has value and is loved. Her family are dairy farmers thus social interaction is a key attribute of the group for herself and her family.

her child has learnt to take turns, listen, respond and make use of all their senses. Rowena is connected to the Matapihi and Let’s Grow kindergarten communities, she describes Mainly Music as friendly, “if you want to have a cry, you can cry, I’ve had that a few times”. She also noted that Cheryll makes her feel welcome, this is a sentiment I totally agree with. Ultimately, the good vibes that emanate from this group all come back to Cheryll and the established team that hold the space and offer love, kindness, and support. In light of the Covid pandemic, Mainly Music practitioners in the UK have developed small online cohorts to continue this important work. While we have the chance in New Zealand to connect in person, I urge expectant parents and those with young children to step out and explore some of these amazing services we have on our doorstep, for yourself, and for your child.

Melody Macleod has been attending the group since October last year. Melody describes the group as a cool place for her and her daughter Thea to connect, make some friends and have some chats. Melody loves how interactive the environment is for Thea, who particularly likes the maracas. Mainly Music has been a platform for them to initially make connections from which friendships have formed. Anna John from Raglan was attending Mainly Music for her first time with her son Leo this term. Anna loved seeing Leo’s face as he engaged with the people and the musical content, she could tell by his facial expressions that he was loving it. The group provided food for the babies as well as delicious coffee and choccy biccies. Practicalities aside, Anna returned for a second session because of the support and positive encouragement felt during her time with the group as well as the joyful atmosphere that was created for her child. Prior to having Leo, Anna contributed to the Karioi Project and looks forward to returning to this. Rowena Crowhurst from Te Uku, notes the effect of the music group on brain development. She explained how
