Nominated in two of the seven categories, the book is up for the Mary Egan Publishing Award for best typography and the HarperCollins Publishers Award for best cover. Huia Come Home will also be in the running for the coveted Gerard Reid Award for best book which is chosen from the shortlist. Designed by Alistair McCready, Jay and wife Erin, whose dream about a giant chicken and the word huia sparked the idea for the book, say he nailed the book’s principles in his design. From the choice of the New Zealand-designed font to the simple ‘manifesto-like’ cover, Jay says Alistair understood the kaupapa of Huia Come Home. And not only the look of the book but the weight of stock, the binding and the smell of the entries all come under close scrutiny from the judging panel. “The judges all did their fair share of

lifting, sniffing, flipping and pondering the multifaceted design decisions,” says the convening judge David Coventon. Erin secretly entered the book into the competition and the couple were thrilled to break the good news to Alistair who is currently on his OE. “[Alistair] was feeling homesick and thinking that we had forgotten about him,” Jay laughs. Conceived, nurtured and produced in Raglan, Jay and Erin are grateful for the support the book has received from the Raglan community. “Our book baby was born here and we are so thankful to the community for getting us through this process,” Erin says. The book has sold over 2500 copies without any marketing budget or reviews, and Jay and Erin feel proud of the book’s success considering they had zero experience in publishing. The winners of each category will be announced at a special ceremony on Thursday, July 26. Copies of Huia Come Home can be purchased from Zinnia on Wainui Road. Janine Jackson

S

ome of the tastiest Indian food was on offer at Raglan Four Square’s annual Indian cultural night last Friday. The weather gods seemed to know that Raglan was preparing for something special as the afternoon downpours made way for a clear balmy night. Organised by Four Square manager

Satnam Bains, around 1000 people attended, enjoying the community spirit and getting to know their neighbours. Satnam’s family spent around six hours preparing 100kg of chicken and 40kgs of chickpeas for the feast. Raglan Area School senior students were servers on the night and raised money towards the upcoming school ball. Satnam and the Four Square team are grateful for the support of Raglan Sunset

Motel for providing accommodation for Satnam’s parents, Poihakena Marae for loaning the tables and chairs, Brian Ruawai for providing the sound, Andrew Townsend from Homegrown Juice for the drinks and Raglan Coconut Yoghurt for the yoghurt and chia spices. Keep an eye out in the next edition of the Chronicle when Satnam’s mother shares her ‘secret’ recipes. Janine Jackson

McCormick and Shadbolt to hit Raglan Golf Club

Housing stories – time to share at the Raglan Community House

O

Raglan Community House Manager Mike Rarere, along with WRAP, want to hear your ideas and concerns around housing in Raglan this Tuesday, june 26.

ver the last couple of years, the Raglan Community House has been hearing an increasing number of unhappy housing stories from visitors to the centre.

I

f you’re at the Raglan Golf Club on the evening of June 29, you will be in for a barrel of laughs. Veteran comedians Gary McCormick and Mayor Tim Shadbolt will be in town to disperse their unique brand of entertainment. McCormick and Shadbolt hit Raglan as part of their national tour of golf clubs where they have been in fine form and had their audiences in stitches with some pretty cheeky home-grown gags. “A great night”, “hilarious”, “great fun” has been among the reaction from crowds they have gathered around the country. Raglan should follow the trend and lucky ticket holders will not just enjoy outstanding comedy, but the $50 price of entry also includes finger food and a light meal. “We’re hoping for a good turnout,” said golf club president Peter Aim. “We are planning for a top night of entertainment.” The comedy duo has played Raglan previously, while McCormick’s

Tarot Talk

relationship with the town goes back to the days of his first television documentary. In 1987 he paid a visit to Raglan and the result was the classic television documentary ‘Raglan by the Sea’. It took a look at the laidback Raglan of the ’80s and footage includes McCormick catching up with his mates in the legendary Raglan Mudsharks band and meeting some colourful Raglan identities. The doco, which will revive some wonderful memories, will play on the big screen at the golf club on the June 29 after Happy Hour between 5.30 and 6.30pm and before the show kicks-off around 7.30pm. Finger food and a light meal will be served and some will be lucky enough to win one of a number of spot prizes. Get involved - pick up a ticket from Ray White Real Estate’s office, Raglan Four Square or from Tim Ryan (027 593 4676). See you there. Raglan Shuttle is on call for pickup and to deliver you safely home after a great night.

Since 2016 when the ballooning housing bubble in Auckland precipitated a torrent of people cashing up and looking to the provinces for a cheap buy and a new place to live, housing prices have risen steadily. In Raglan, the median house price i.e. the price halfway between the most expensive and the cheapest house, was $515,000 in April 2017 (LJ Hooker), that price now, in 2018, is $660,000 (QVNZ). When houses cost more to buy, other costs like rates also increase, and eventually this flows through into the cost to rent a home. In 2016 a family could rent a standard 3 bedroom home in Raglan for about $300 - 350/week, that price is now more like $400 450/week. Rent of $250 a week for a one bedroom 20m2 cottage is now considered ‘cheap’. Affording a place to live in Raglan for many, is getting tougher. The Raglan Community House decided it was time to see what could be done to help. A few coffees and some conversations with key community leaders later, and a new project to do just that was formed. WRAP – or the Whaingaroa/Raglan Affordable (Housing) Project – has been set up as a sub-group of the Raglan Community House and in March this year was successful in being awarded $40,000 from the WEL Energy Vital Impact (Housing) Fund to complete a research project into housing affordability for Raglan. In order to raise the very significant amounts of money required to build housing solutions, the WRAP steering group know that they will need to convince central government, private investors and others to get involved. To do that, they will have to build a robust business case with very reliable data – how big the problem is, who is affected the most, what kind of solutions would work in Raglan and eventually, who would want to be part of creating

When you see the Ace of Swords, examine your life to see how its clean, sharp energy could work for you. Think about any problem objectively. Above all else, commit to being honest and ethical. a new way to have an affordable home and what would it all cost. Data specific to Raglan isn’t easy to come by, so the grant from WEL Energy Trust is funding some extraction of information from big central databases and a specially designed householder survey that will be launched in a few months. It will try to ascertain how much the cost of rent or mortgage payments impacts on household finances, how does this affect stress levels in our community and how many people are affected. Watch this space for more on that later. In the meantime, WRAP would also like to offer a place for people to come and talk about their housing affordability problems, how they are being affected and what they think might be good solutions. Mike Rarere, manager of the Raglan Community House, has teamed up with the project lead for WRAP, Fiona McNabb, to host some open days at the centre to talk housing. The first one will be on Tuesday June 26. Mike and Fiona will be at the Raglan House at 45 Bow St all day from 9am – 5pm with plenty of tea and coffee, so please come and tell us your story. Lisa Thomson, our ward counsellor and Fiona are also making a road trip to Wellington in late June for a Local Government NZ Housing symposium and a meeting with Neville Johnson, manager of Kiwibuild at the Ministry for Business Innovation and Employment. WRAP have already shared some of Raglan’s housing issues with Housing Minister Phil Twyford and Mr Johnson, and want to be able to take some of your stories to Wellington to help illustrate the difficulties people are facing. This is a great chance to get central government on our side at a time when housing is right at the top of their agenda. Lisa will be representing the Raglan Community Board who are also supporting her travel back from Wellington. Mike and Fiona will be at the Raglan House at 45 Bow St all day from 9am – 5pm on Tuesday, June 26 with plenty of tea and coffee, so please come and tell us your story.

Heart Health Advocate Lisa Mitchell says National Volunteer Week, from 17-23 June, is a perfect time for the charity to acknowledge the difference their volunteers make to the lives of people living with heart disease and their families. “We simply couldn’t continue our mission to stop New Zealander’s dying prematurely of heart disease and help the more than 186,000 Kiwis currently living with it, without the generous support of our amazing volunteers in the Waikato. “We are very grateful to this group of kind-hearted Kiwis who generously help out at community events, collect during our Big Heart Appeal, and help with administration. Lisa Mitchell says heart disease is New Zealand’s single biggest killer, claiming at least one life every

disease personally and the theme of this year’s National Volunteer Week, ‘Volunteers the heart of our community’, certainly applies to them.” One person who volunteers for the Heart Foundation in the Waikato, Noleen McCathie, has helped the local branch by arranging collection sites and helpers to collect for the Big Heart Appeal in February each year. Noleen believes the Heart Foundation to be a worthy cause and enjoys the time spent collecting and meeting the Raglan community. Noleen has been collecting for a few years now and brings with her, enthusiasm and commitment in collecting the donations from the generous community of Raglan. Hubie and Barbara outside their shed, giving away produce.

B

usy as bees might be something of a hackneyed phrase but it’s hard to go past it in describing Graham and Barbara Hubert’s voluntary work in Raglan. They themselves indirectly acknowledge the analogy. “We see ourselves as worker bees, just getting on with what we do quietly and certainly not being in the limelight,” says Graham, or Hubie as he’s better known around town. The two 70-somethings made a conscious decision a little over 14 years ago – when they started living here fulltime – that in their retirement they’d like to get involved and together help others in the community.

“And really we then had no idea how that would transpire,” adds Hubie. As it’s turned out they’re involved in a wide and eclectic range of activities, from helping run the Raglan Light Exercise Group and the local horticultural society to freely offering help with people’s gardens and properties and giving away large quantities of everything from surplus vegetables and small plants to freshly caught or smoked fish. That’s not to mention their work with Xtreme Zero Waste recyclables, Barbara as a knitter of baby clothes for a big New Zealand hospital and Hubie as a Mr Fix-it of an impressive range of household and recreational items. “They know me very well (at Xtreme),” Hubie says.

Hubie and Barbara, like all the committee members, are passionate about the difference the light exercise group –which has been around for 20 years now – makes in the community. An average of about 20 locals attend the twice-a-week class, which is not like a gym session but instead all about body mobility and wellbeing as well as offering social interaction. The pair have both recently also joined the horticultural society committee, Hubie again in a secretary role. He’s also an advocate of simple garden philosophies to have a successful harvest or top flower displays. Hubie says gardening – along with fishing – is “in our blood”. They grow little plants from seedlings every fortnight and

these go out to the community via Xtreme, the local marae, horticultural interests and even the light exercise group to which Hubie’s just taken along six punnets. “We would like everyone in Raglan to have a simple easy-care, healthy small home garden,” he says of the initiative. Meantime the Huberts tend their substantial gardens at Raglan and at daughters’ properties in Tamahere and Mt Albert – using horse manure they collect for free from Cambridge stables – and give all the surplus away. That includes about 20 paperbags of potatoes and the like which they distribute among the community around Christmas. Much of the bounty from their weekly fishing trips up harbour or out to sea is also distributed by Hubie within the community. He’s fished locally for more than 60 years – much of it floundering – and reckons the catch is just as good as ever. “We never come home empty-handed.” There’s a synergy in their fishing and gardening efforts as the flounder frames go into the garden, along with the mud. Hubie swears by the mud, once rain has washed away the silt. Members of the Waikato Sports Fishing Club, the Huberts have a couple of bigger boats in ‘Hubie’s Boat Shed’ at the bottom of their property, along with a couple of dinghys for the grandkids. About 70 rods Hubie has made up line the shed; he mixes and matches eyes and reels and gives many of the finished rods away. That knack for fixing things is also reflected in Xtreme-sourced bicycles, drifting scooters, surfboards, paddleboards, toys, battery-powered tools, craypots, mowers and blowers that all get given a second chance at life in the boat shed. Hubie can spend all day in the shed, but then next thing the Huberts may be out helping households with mowing, hedges, carting rubbish away or pruning of trees and plants. He believes that if you give to people, then people give back. “Raglan is a neat little community (like that),” he reckons. Edith Symes

Well, I am glad you asked…The purity of the fish oil used in products protects you from potentially harmful toxins such as mercury, lead and other environmental contaminants. Exceptional freshness is essential as fish oils are highly susceptible to oxidative rancidity. Oxidized (or rancid) oils have been shown to cause negative health outcomes by causing free radicals within the body. Nordic naturals employ small boat fishermen to catch their fish, and as soon as the fish is caught they place it on nitrogen to stop oxidation from occurring, thus producing exceptional quality fish oils. We are having a Taste Testing at The Herbal Dispensary with the Nordic Natural Rep on Tuesday h June 26 between 12.301.30pm, so please come down and sample some exceptional fish oil. Consultation opens on the Council’s representation review

A

six-week consultation opens Wednesday, 20 June, on Waikato District Council’s representation arrangements for the next local body elections, including the shape of the district’s voting Wards and the number of Councillors elected.

Waikato District Mayor Allan Sanson says, “The Council is required to review these arrangements at least once every six years to ensure that individuals and communities in our district are fairly represented on and by the Council. Any changes as a result of this review will come into effect for the 2019 elections.” The Council’s proposal recommends a modified status quo which retains 13 councillors elected from 10 wards (plus the Mayor

elected at large), but with slightly modified ward boundaries in the north to offer fairer representation in the district’s northern-most Awaroa ki Tuakau Ward where the district’s population has grown. If adopted, the proposal would see Mercer shifting from the Awaroa ki Tuakau Ward into the Whangamarino Ward so that the wider Mercer community would be entirely located in one ward. It would also see Rangiriri moving from Whangamarino into the Huntly Ward, and a small part of Whangamarino’s southeastern rural community moving into the Hukanui-Waerenga Ward. In addition, the proposal recommends that the OnewheroTuakau Community Board be disestablished and split into a new Tuakau Community Board to cover Tuakau and its immediate surroundings, with a separate Onewhero Community Committee covering the balance of the current

community board area that lies south of the Waikato River in the Onewhero-Te Akau Ward. This means there would still be 30 community board members elected from five community boards, as the proposal recommends simply adding a new community committee (Onewhero) to the community committees that the Council supports across the district. In 2017 the Council made two other important decisions as a part of the representation review process – the decision to retain ‘first-pastthe-post’ as the electoral system; and the decision not to introduce Maaori wards in the district, but to explore ways by which Maaori interests can be better-represented through Council processes. Submissions can be made online at www.waikatodistrict.govt. nz/sayit where full information about the representation review and proposal is available.

Waipa Networks Business Awards, announce final call for entries

DO YOU HAVE AN EMPLOYEE THAT DESERVES RECOGNITION? NOMINATIONS ARE OPEN FOR RAGLAN EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR 2018:

R

aglan Chronicle are proud to be the sponsor of the Waipa Business Awards 2018 Raglan Employee of the Year Award.

Now it’s time for businesses to nominate their employee for the 2018 Awards. Do you have a member (or members) of the team who should be nominated? We know there are some stars out there! Entries close on Friday, June 29, so head to the Waipa website to make your nomination: https://waipabusinessawards.awardsplatform.com/

Raglan businesses were well represented at last year's business awards.

T

he 2018 Waipa Networks Business Awards (the Awards) make their final call for entries as they prepare to shut all entries/nominations on Friday 29th June.

Entries have been open since the Launch event at Mystery Creek Events Centre on the 5th April, allowing entrants a little extra time to previous years, but time is now running out. There has been a fantastic response from local businesses, and a high level of engagement but now the pressure is on for local businesses to finish their entries and press submit. Kerry Sabberton Jigsaw Professional Development who stood as this year’s Awards Ambassador commented: “Finding the time and effort to make that final push to get our submission completed was totally worth the effort from a business planning perspective. “It made us really consider our journey to date and question some of our processes and focus - regardless of the outcome of the awards we found that we finally took time after three years to take a good, hard look at what we were doing and realised what we had built. As a result of this process we have made some really positive changes to our business.” Previous winner’s The Herbal Dispensary encourage prospect entrants stating, “Entering the Waipa Networks Business awards made us stop, take a pause and really focus on the business, instead of just working in it. The visit with the judges and their feedback was outstanding. They gave us ideas

& strategies that we implemented into our business, some straightaway and others we still refer back to. We attended the awards nights with all our staff, which was an excellent evening and was great for our team to see the results of their combined efforts especially as we won awards two years running. The media exposure after the event was also very beneficial and helped to raise our profile particularly around the neighbouring Waipa district.” The Chambers are keen to encourage all those that have started their entries to finish them, Kris Anderson, CE Te Awamutu Chamber of Commerce, commented Now is the time for Te Awamutu business’s to put their hands up & celebrate our past, current and future successes through their involvement with the 2018 Wapa Networks Business Awards. With our region acknowledged nationwide for its passion, ingenuity and community focus let's all help to illustrate these unique traits once more through either direct entry, encouraging others to stand tall or with the nomination of businesses or people who are making a difference to our communities. The Awards celebrate all entrants in style, at the Gala event on Friday 31st August at Mystery Creek Events Centre. The event is set to be a great night and includes: canapes, Te Radar entertaining as MC, three-course Montana catered meal, live music by Coupe de Ville, goodie bags and spot prizes. So, whether you are an entrant or not the event is well worth checking out. Tickets are available now via the website – www. waipabusinessawards.co.nz and there are still some Early Bird tickets available so get in quick to secure your seat at what is set to be a great night out!

Hobby artist steels himself for more creative lifestyle

Maurice at the creative market showing local, Linda Gorlicka, some of his designs. and Maurice at home where he installed his decorative steel screen.

H

e isn’t about to chuck in the day job but two satisfying weekends courtesy of a longtime hobby have set engineer Maurice Pruden thinking about becoming more an artist. But not one with paintbrush and easel: the Raglan 63 year old’s skill is with a waterjet cutter and his works are mostly of steel. Maurice spent his Queen’s Birthday

Weekend installing a decorative steel screen he’d designed to provide privacy between his and a close-by house on upper Bow Street. He reckons the screen or trellis of intricately cut out flaxes went down well with neighbour Jill Hewitt. “It’s a solution with an artistic twist that we both like and enjoy.” Then at this month’s creative market in Stewart Street Maurice launched his own distinctive style of garden art.

“I met some amazing people, as well as making sales and taking orders,” he says of his first stall outside the Old School Arts Centre. It’s all got him wondering if he could “go further” with his longtime hobby, concentrating on both artwork and installations “because everybody’s got a fence and houses are closer together”. Maurice chooses stainless steel,

aluminium or a weathering steel called corten according to the particular effect – shiny, matt or rust-like – he wants in his garden art. The corten screen he completed recently may look a bit rusty but doesn’t actually corrode, he says, pointing out that many architects use it in new subdivisions. Maurice works with a heavy industrial cutting machine – at his Hamilton business Pro Cut NZ – which can cut through 150mlthick steel using a very high-pressure jet of water, or a mixture of water and an abrasive substance. The waterjet cutter can do the job with anything solid like glass or ceramics, adds Maurice, who is currently cutting tiles for a new area under construction in Hamilton Gardens. While still a way off retirement, Maurice reckons he can now picture himself giving more time to his artistic endeavours. He’s lived in town on and off for 15 years but has been coming to Raglan “forever”, and can remember fishing off the jetty with his grandad Jack Burrows. “My grandparents built one of the first houses on Gilmore Street in the 40s and I would stay with them at every opportunity. Now I live not less than 100 metres from their original home, so I still feel a part of their history.” Maurice says he loves everything about the west coast from its seashells to the prolific flaxes, and will often walk the likes of the Kaitoke bushtrack taking photos of the flora and fauna to incorporate in his next artwork. His pieces include anything from toetoe and nikau palms to kowhai, bottlebrush and tui. And though he’s keen to move further into full design-and-build installations, he concedes that much of his garden art is intended for “just plain viewing”. Edith Symes

Biodiversity hui highlights Raglan roots and culture

A number of individuals and organisations from Raglan took part in the bi-annual Biodiversity Forum in May this year.

n May 18 the Waikato Biodiversity Forum held their O bi-annual hui in Whaingaroa for the second time since 2006. The diverse group attending consisted of Papa Taiao students from Raglan Area School, interested locals and out of towners, as well as a range of staff from councils and environmental agencies.

The kaupapa of the day was focused on the patai, “how do we enhance biodiversity in a growing town”? Like many parts of Aotearoa, Whaingaroa is experiencing significant growth in its permanent and transient population. This can of course put pressure on the natural environment and community who call it home. The field trip format moved between several locations. Appropriately, the day

started out at the Kokiri Centre with Angeline Greensill. Her korero grounded the group in the history of her people and the importance of their connection with the whenua and moana of Whaingaroa. This was followed by a run-down from Rangitahi Peninsula’s David Peacock and ecologist Jacqui Bell on the effects of the development on biodiversity. We also heard from Fiona Edwards of Whaingaroa Harbour Care, Bexie Towle

from the Karioi Project and Rick Thorpe from Xtreme Zero Waste about their projects’ humble beginnings and award-winning achievements. Lastly, Phil Mcabe from Solscape gave us a perspective on what effect the booming tourism industry may have on Raglan’s biodiversity. The overwhelming feeling on the day was that of positiveity. It became clear to see that many aspects of biodiversity had in fact already been enhanced through the hard work and innovative practises of groups like Harbour Care and Xtreme, who have set the benchmark in sustainable farming and waste management practises for the rest of the country to follow. A huge factor that has worked in Whaingaroa’s favour is its culture for care. None of the good work done here would have been able to take place without a community that cares for each other and the paradise they live in. A big concern from the full spectrum of speakers on the day was around keeping this culture alive and well. Phil McCabe even brought up the idea of having a set of ‘Raglan Rules’ for visitors, outlining expected behaviour while interacting with Whaingaroa’s environment and community. Looking to the future, there was recognition that what has been achieved is amazing, but there is still a lot of biodiversity mahi to take place in Whaingaroa. Undeniably, this will not just be reliant on volunteer efforts alone, but on having reliable funding that creates job opportunities for locals to continue the work that benefits us all. If the growing community continues to jump on the waka and support the sustainability kaupapa, we will be standing in the best position to protect this piece of paradise and continue to show other communities what is possible. Pink’s the word as quirky gift shop bucks midwinter blues

idwinter is not the best time of year for beachside M businesses, but one Raglan retailer is right in the pink.

Not only has she more than doubled the size of her once cram-jammed gift shop Zinnia on the corner of Electric Avenue, but Marie Nicholls has re-used the shelving from the old video store into which she expanded last week – and painted it pink. Marie was also wearing lipstick to match last Monday morning when the Chronicle visited. It’s become her brand colour for the new and vintage homeware and gifts outlet she‘s owned now for nearly nine years. While delighted with the extra space, Marie says it was a lot of hard work the week before with Zinnia shut from the Monday to Wednesday after husband Barry knocked down a wall between the two stores. Most of the wood and “demolition stuff” was recyclable, Marie adds, and was then carted up to Xtreme Zero Waste while staff busied themselves restoring order to her eclectic mix of merchandise. “I couldn’t have done it without my staff,” she told the Chronicle, adding it’s hard to resist working all the time in a business of one’s own. The now 65 year old worked as a registered nurse in Hamilton most of her life. Her first foray into retailing came about 15 years ago with a small “vintage corner” in Right Up My Alley which was then a popular retro shop in Volcom Lane. Marie however had a hankering for her

Marie serves Jessie Rushton in the new-look Zinnia with staff member Jo Sweeney in the background.

own space to house the vintage wares she hunts down and gathers, so opened her first shop in Claudelands 10 years ago then a second Zinnia in Raglan – where she has a bach – a year later. But feeling recently that she needed “more of a life”, Marie sold the Claudelands business because “this one (in Electric Ave)

was doing way better”. Raglan is “nowhere near” as quiet as it was when she started out, Marie explains. Even on a midwinter Monday Zinnia had customers in and out, reacting positively to the larger shop which displays its books now on pink shelves rather than having them piled up on top of each other.

There’s even a strategically placed chair or two, to encourage shoppers to sit and browse. The expanded premises can also accommodate both pushchairs and wheelchairs, Marie points out, which is another plus. Edith Symes

Mighty Mighty EP release set for this Saturday ighty Mighty are a local Raglan band, originally M formed in 2015. The band started

out playing classic funk cover tracks from the likes of James Brown, Sly and the Family Stone, Maceo Parker etc.

With their regular appearances at the Raglan Yot Club, they managed to hone their set, and began to gel with each other musically, so the band grew tighter and more confident in their approach to becoming a solid live act. Over the years, the audiences began to grow along with the band’s popularity (especially with the local crowd), and they have been playing to a packed house on numerous occasions. They have also appeared at Raglan’s Soundsplash festival and Christmas in the Park. Band members include Boyd Dixon on drums, Odhran Devlin on Bass, Cameron Olsen on guitar, Greg Taylor on keyboards, and newest member, Deli Kaukau, on lead vocals. Each member has played and performed professionally for numerous years in various different outfits, and play an active part in the wider Waikato music scene with performance and teaching. FUNKED UP PARADISE EP RECORDING Recently, the band decided they would have a go at writing some original material, growing marginally away from the “one chord funk” style, and incorporating more jazz, disco and electronic styles into their sound, which definitely gives a heavy nod to the likes of Stevie Wonder, Prince, Michael Jackson, and more modern artists such as Jamiroquai, Orgone, and Vulfpeck. During November 2017, the band began to record their first 3-track EP ‘Funked Up Paradise’, at Twisty Pole Studios in Rotorua. Initially laying down the drums and bass

tracks, they then went on to record the guitars, keys and vocals during various sessions at Raglan Old School Art’s Centre, and using the technical know-how and gadgetry of long-time Raglan local Andy Webb. The EP also features the 3-piece horn

section of Bill Forrest (sax), Grant Mason (trumpet) and Greg Taylor (trombone), with percussion coming from Freddy Limbert. The overall sound of the EP could be described as big, bold, groovy, and designed to make you dance!

The band will release the EP at their next gig at the Yot Club, on June 23. There is a $15 door charge which will include a download card from which to download the EP. Doors open at 9.30pm with support from B-Rex.

coach/player Jason Waitere say the club have a longstanding rivalry with top of the table Hamilton Old Boys whom they face this Saturday, June 23 at 2.45pm at Willoughby Park, Hamilton. “We would love to get some local support at the game. Old Boys are a good team and we really want to beat them,” Jason says. “Old Boys are the club to beat and they have been throughout their whole club scene. Their club system is different to ours - they have a contingent of supporters and volunteers. Whereas at Raglan, there’s the likes of myself as player/coach and Jason who does the strapping, setting up the field and cleaning up changing rooms,” Noel says. The coaching duo are hoping a successful 2018 season and a potential move into first division will inspire some of the up-andcoming local young players to join the club. “We need those young guys who are faster and fitter for first division. Next year we want to be the team to beat,” Jason says. “We’re hoping to be second on the leader board all the way through to get a home semifinal,” Noel says. The team are grateful for the donation of balls and kicking tees from former Raglan Rugby player Matt Meek and for faithful supporters Peggy and Alf Whitiora who watch all the games. Noel says Raglan Rugby has had its fair share of top players over the years, with former players like Rhys and Sean Ellison, Cliffy Bell, Bruce Turner and Whetu Barber who have gone on to play provincial and premier rugby. “To play premier rugby is a real feat for players from here. And we’ve got a lot of up-and-coming junior players who will most likely go on to play at the top of their game.” Janine Jackson
