P

arachuting Santa made a perfect landing at Raglan’s Christmas in the Park this year.

The community event has been a hit with locals and visitors for more than 20 years and organsier Surfside Church pastor Roger Peart says it was another excellent turunout this year.

“All went well, it was a warm fine evening with a good positive crowd and a laid-back family vibe.” Headline act, R&B, pop and gospel recording artist Ben Lummis who rose to musical fame after winning the first New Zealand Idol in 2004 was a hit with the crowds along with other imported acts

funk band Sir Brown and Freshmans Dance Crew. A fine line-up of local acts included the Raglan Area School and Te Uku School kapa haka groups, Emily Wiki with the Majestic Unicorns, the Raglan Hip Hop dance group, Surfside kids and popular local band Mighty Mighty. The evening was topped off by carols led by the Surfside Music team. “We couldn't put on an evening like this without our many sponsors,” Roger says. “Thanks to all the team who did the work planning and organising this year’s event, and our local councillor Lisa Thomson and kaumatua Sean Ellison who welcomed everyone to the event. St Johns were also in attendance and having the Maori Wardens directing traffic and Xtreme Zero Waste providing recycling bins meant it was relatively easy to organise.” Major sponsors this year were Raglan Community Board, Summer Glow Apiaries, Raglan Community Charitable Trust, Raglan Lions, Gavins, Activate Church, CS Installs, Malachi Farrant Homes and Kiwi Designer Homes, along with many other local businesses. Tarot Talk

W

elcome to Tarot Talk - a new weekly column in which I will introduce a Tarot card for the week and provide a little information about it. I hope you enjoy this space. This week's card is The Hierophant sometimes also referred to as the High Priest. He is named after the hierophantes, or priests, who guarded the E l e u s i n i a n M y s t e r i e s (see https:// en.wikipedia.org/ wiki/Eleusinian_ Mysteries for more information about these). This card can suggest that you may be looking for spiritual meaning in your life or will be questioning your spiritual beliefs. The Hierophant also talks about connection with higher education, educational institutions or long established traditions and can suggest, when a question is asked, that conventional approaches are best. Stick to the tried and true. On a day to day basis this means nurturing your talents through learning and heeding good advice. While the Hierophant offers wise counsel he also represents institutions of higher learning and traditional values. He can offer you an opportunity to question and define your values. Whatever your spiritual beliefs, Christmas is a time when we can reflect on our life and values so this card is a very appropriate card this week. May you enjoy the blessings of Christmas. More information about this card can be found on the Tarot Talk Facebook page https://www. facebook.com/tarottalknz/ Tarot readings are available by appointment. Txt Chrissy on 027 6644261

et a bit of air time this summer at Raglan’s premier kitesurfing store and school. Based at the end of Volcom Lane, downwind from Raglan Roast, Ozone boasts world class instructors to take you through the ropes and wings of the sport, as well as stocking the full range of Ozone designs across all of the sports kiteboarding, paragliding, speedflying, and paramotoring,. Co-founded by 2016 Masters World

Hydrofoiling Champion Matt Taggart and double world Champion in Hang Gliding and Paragliding Rob Whittall, the Raglan-based operation is part of a global enterprise designing some of the world’s premier kites and paragliders. Rob’s designs have won 12 consecutive World Championships since 2009 and Ozone are recognised as one of the top five brands in the world for kitesurfing and are the leading brand for paragliding, speedflying and parmotor wings. Raglan is Ozone’s research and development summer base for designing

their kite and speedwing range, as well as being the new flagship store and distribution centre for New Zealand. Matt made Raglan his home in 2007 with kiwi partner Rebecca and along with their two daughters Ruby, 10 and Mila, 9, the family are all keen kite surfers. “It’s such an awesome sport,” he says. “It gives you a connection to the wind and the connection with the water, it’s a magical feeling using the power of the wind to enjoy the ocean without crowds.” Matt says it’s a sport for all ages and the equipment is so well designed that after a few hours with an Ozone instructor a novice will be up and flying. Kiteboarding is scheduled for the Buenos Aires Youth Olympic Games in 2018 and Matt and the Ozone team are keeping their eye out for up-and-coming young talent to nurture and mentor for the 2020 Youth Olympics. “It’s such and awesome sport for getting children outside,” he says. “Kiteboarding is an addictive, exciting sport for all ages and isn't as extreme like most people think” Since establishing themselves in Raglan in 2007, the Ozone team has grown to include top New Zealand and International kiteboarder and product manager Torrin Bright, graphic designer Andy Banks, Ozone New Zealand general manager Stefano Gigli, Raglan manager Morgan Costa and kiteboard instructor Francois Berck Janine Jackson For more information visit ozonenewzealand.com, email info@ ozonenewzealand.com or call into the store at the end of Volcom Lane.

Whaingaroa rangatahi: It takes a village

It takes a village to raise a child,” is a proverb known around the world that rings true in every community.

It specifically rang true to me while sitting in last week’s Raglan Naturally Rangatahi Hui held at the Kokiri Centre. In line with the revitalisation of the Raglan Naturally Community Plan, small hui’s are being held to gain an understanding of where each sector of our community is currently at. These meetings bring together those who are playing an active role in that particular space and welcomes those who have an interest in being a part of the conversation in regards to the meetings topic. Last week’s hui was focussed around the rangatahi, the youth, of our community and was attended by those who have been supporting the rangatahi in a number of ways. From school counsellors to youth engagement and activity coordinators, to some of our communities favourite whāea kēkē, we sat alongside each other and were joined by a few youth representatives. As we went around the room introducing ourselves and why we decided to come along, Charlie Irvin, one of the youth representatives made a very poignant statement in regards to her reason for being there. “You can’t make plans for the youth without knowing what they want, and you won’t really know what we want unless you talk to us...” Charlie was joined by a few other youth including, Sven Seddon, Lexi Holmes and Rangi Rongo. While Lexi has just finished at Raglan Area School (RAS) this year and Rangi a few years ago, the two are passionate about the community and in specific the work being done with the youth. Rangi has been

4 RAGLAN Chronicle

working at RAS and assisted Whaea Bronwyn in running the Youth Hub when it was open. Introductions were followed by two different activities, one for envisioning the type of community we want for our youth and the other for creating a community map of the strengths, resources and assets that we currently have that will help to support that vision. What was made clear after we finished was the amount of work so many are doing for the youth and the amazing opportunities that are currently available to them. However, it was also clear that there is still so much work to be done in order to really tautoko, to support, our youth and help them feel that sense of inclusion in the place that they call home. One massive topic that has been in the back of mind for some time now is gentrification. However, up until last week, I had never considered how gentrification can affect the youth within a community. With the ever-growing population, and the continuous changing vibe and landscape of the town, some of the rangatahi who have been raised here since they were young, are understandably feeling quite displaced. While gentrification is happening in small, eclectic communities around the world similar to ours, not enough research has been done in regards to how it actually impacts the youth in those specific areas. So, for a minute, you might want to imagine things from a youths perspective. … for example, imagine being in an already struggling family that faces a rent rise in their current home, resulting in a loss of somewhere to live and the family having to relocate. Imagine... your old childhood neighbourhood where you once knew every face on the block, is now full of new faces… some who scowl at you through their windows

Rangatahi perform a haka for Whaea Bronwyn, during a BBQ held for youth at Papahua/Kopua Domain. Image // Christelle Berthon

for the way you dress or the way you wear your hat. Imagine... riding your bike down the street, where a few years back you freely ran and played, and being told you weren’t allowed to do that anymore, for no good reason at all. These are only some of the struggles the rangatahi in our community are facing today. It made me wonder at what point in our lives do we forget that we too, were once them. And that we too, just wanted to be heard. In a recent study done in Raglan by the Fire and Emergency New Zealand National Headquarters, they found that the number of youth in Raglan ages 0 to 14 is actually above the national average for New Zealand. Meaning, our community is literally full of kids. Taking that into consideration, we need to be seeking out the voice of the youth at any

chance we get when it comes to making plans for the future of our community. Because in reality, these ‘long-term plans’ will affect them more than they will affect us. Our daily interactions with the youth will impact not just their own personal future, but the future of the communities they choose to settle in. We owe it to ourselves to be more open to their needs, their hopes and their dreams. To tautoko them in whatever way we can and to create a community where they are given the opportunity to become the best possible versions of themselves that they can be. Karamea Puriri Find out more about the Raglan Naturally Community Plan by visiting Raglan Naturally on Facebook, www.facebook.com/ RaglanNaturally. Senior constable Raewyn McLachlan and constable Gary Ryburn will be representing the Raglan crew with constables Jack Driver and Peter Van Wout coming in from Hamilton. “We deal with a lot of people on the phone so it’s a good chance to put a face to a name,” Gary says. Tidy Kiwis keeping Raglan streets clean

From left - The Clean Up Crew Kevin Ormsby, Bob MacLeod and Brian Wilson.

I

f you’re ever up early on a Monday morning in town you might have noticed a street cleaning crew busy getting the pavements spick and span for the week ahead. The Clean Up Crew are hardworking volunteers and all-round tidy Kiwis who aim to put Raglan’s best foot forward. Founded by Kevin Ormsby earlier this year after noticing the debris and dirt on the pavements around his local coffee haunts. “Through the summer I would watch the dirt accumulate on the footpaths,” he says. “My wife Shelley said ‘either do something about it or shut up’.” Not one to stand by and just moan, Kevin got stuck in and with the help of Brian Wilson, Wayne Trott and Bob MacLeod, they walk the town with leaf blowers clearing away the weekend’s grime. Kevin says the crew have managed to keep on top of things over winter but he’s concerned they will have their work cut out over the busy summer period. “We had our first complaint the other day, and fair enough to,” he says. “A guy sitting outside the bakery was trying to enjoy his pie when we came along with our leaf blowers.” Kevin says when they got started he soon realised the crew could be doing the work of council contractors.

“If the council is paying for someone to do this work we could set up a monitoring group to check the job is being done.” He put in a request to the Waikato District Council for information on scheduled street cleaning in Raglan and discovered the council undertakes a twice-yearly pavement wash in April and October. General Manager Service Delivery Tim Harty say they have programmed in a third clean during January following on from the influx of visitors to the town around the New Year. Council also undertake a mechanical clean of the kerb and drainage channels and also suck out the drainage catch pits twice a year, once following autumn leaf fall and again six months later. In the meantime, the crew will carry on with their weekly clean and Kevin is hoping to get other volunteers on board to help out over the summer with the possibility of increasing the work to twice a week. The crew would also appreciate cleaning equipment such as leaf blowers and leaf scoops to borrow over the busy holiday period. Janine Jackson To volunteer or to offer equipment contact Kevin on 0274 577 733.

W

e are starting this column to recognise some of the awesome volunteers that do wonderful things for our community.

This week we spoke to Dirk de Ruysscher who is involved in heaps of volunteer roles including: Raglan Volunteer Fire Brigade (Senior Firefighter and Brigade Secretary); Raglan Mountainbiking Club / Te Ara Kakariki mtb trails (Trail Maintenance and management - Club Treasurer); Raglan Area School (Previous coaching basketball - currently organising mini-basketball tournament for years 5,6,7 and 8 in winter months); Karioi Classic cycling even (Coorganiser). When did you join the fire service? I joined the Raglan Fire Brigade in 2009. What do you like about this part of your life? It has been the best life choice I have ever made (besides marrying my wife Lin, lol). I like the part of being an active contributor to our community. It gives a very satisfied feeling that you are able to help people in need and being part of a group of really good people. I have also learned a lot of new skills over the years. What would you say to someone thinking of joining? Realise that you have to make a long term commitment. Responding to emergency call outs can be very stressful and have an impact on your families. If you are able to overcome that, then you are the right person for the job. The bike tracks must have taken a lot of your time and energy. What motivated you to offer these to the community? People don't always realise that, but I spend on average 4 hours a week keeping those tracks in good nick. The extra bonus is that doing this keeps me fit. The main purpose of the bike trails is to offer our community and visitors a safe environment to exercise and relax. After living 11 years in Raglan, not much has been done by local authorities to improve or facilitate cycling on our roads. There are still no cycle paths, so I decided that we had to do something about that ourselves.

It has been a tough process but now that the trails are here, hopefully it will be the start of a bigger cycling network in and around Raglan You coach local school basketball (or in the past? ). What benefit do you get from the coaching experience? It has been awesome to see these young teenagers that I coached, evolving into confident young adults. Most of them have left school now, but I feel that they still show lots of respect when I bump into them from time to time. Lots of them are still playing the game, which makes me very happy. Basketball is not just bouncing a ball, it is a lifestyle. It teaches kids to be part of a group and look after each other. How do you manage running your business Cyclery Raglan, as well being involved in these other areas. Are you stretched? or is this the way you like to be? It probably all comes down to time management. Luckily my 2 sons have left home, so that gives me a bit more extra time. You can't control the fire siren. So when that goes off, it means that I have to close the shop which obviously has an impact on my business. But I noticed that people appreciate what I do and they often come back when I return to my work after the call out. I guess I am a bit more stretched in the busy summer season, because we also get more incident call outs around that time of the year. Do you have a future project in the pipeline Dirk? Just continue with what I am doing at this stage. I have been asked to be involved at some degree with overlooking the reestablishment of the PRIME Emergency Care in Raglan. But that is just in its early stages. What do you truly like to do in your spare time? Visiting my two boys in Wellington and watching heaps of basketball games on tv. What plans do you have for Christmas and the summer break? It will be business as usual for me. Working on bikes and managing the trails. We will have our sons over for a few days to enjoy Christmas eve. Hopefully I can afford some time off in late summer or early autumn.

The Community Heroes column is sponsored by West Coast Health Clinic.

Doesn’t our wee town just shine in summer - we really are lucky to live in such an amazing place! Now that the busy summer period has started - with families, friends and visitors arriving, our town and beautiful environment is under pressure. Let’s all do our best to show Mother Earth some love over the holiday season, lead by example and show our wonderful summer visitors ‘how we do things’ here in Raglan. We look after this place, we care for the environment and pick up rubbish if we come across it. We are the community that cares! All of us here at Whaingaroa Environment Centre are thrilled to be a part of this amazing community! The WEC whanau wish you all a safe and happy holiday season. Thank you for your support in 2017 - we look forward to a great year ahead.

Wow Raglan we are so lucky to live in a community with so many truly amazing individuals. Xtreme would like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to this wonderful community for your commitment to the kaupapa of zero waste. We have 2 years to reach our goal of zero waste by 2020. As a community let’s dig even deeper, be conscious consumers, focus on the 3 ‘Rs’ Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!!

Summer in the garden

We LOVE Whaingaroa!

A HUGE Thank You!

The Whaingaroa Environment Centre

It’s looking to be a long hot summer this season so our gardens will all need some extra care to keep growing. Now is a good time to mulch your garden beds to help keep the moisture in when watering. Remember to water only in the early morning or evening and direct the water at the roots so the plants can make the most of every drop. Slow drip hoses, irrigation systems and Ollas can all help save water. Water seedlings for a week after planting out to help them get their roots out into the ground around them. After that they should be ok, except in very long hot and dry spells. Water your plants deeply and infrequently, rather than little and often to help plants crate strong deep root systems. Plant thirsty plants, like courgettes, in dips so that water runs down towards the roots and collects. Our community gardens are thriving thanks to some awesome team work over the last few months. Watch this space for the next working bee sometime in late Jan.

With a collaborative approach we can reach this goal….Lets do this! A very special ‘thank you for your mahi!’ to some of our Community Champions; - Councillor Lisa Thomson – Thank you for your tireless energy, being the spokesperson for our town, and you’re ongoing commitment to Raglan’s residents and environment. Your continued support is greatly appreciated. - Cynthia Tucker! You are a superstar! You do such a fantastic job keeping our beaches and playgrounds clear of litter. Thank you for all of your hard work and volunteering so much of time. - Wayne Trott, Tim Duff, Bob McCloud and team – great work keeping our CBD clean and tidy, you’re early Monday morning clean-ups are greatly appreciated. Xtreme would like to thank you all, for your

fantastic uptake of the kerbside foodwaste collection service. New initiatives often take time and are a struggle to get off the ground. The transition with the foodwaste service was seamless, you’ve all done amazing work!! Please think of our workers during this hot and busy time of the year. If you generate a large volume of recyclables please bring them up to the Resource Recovery Centre 186 Te Hutewai Road and do some shopping at the same time. Separate as much as you can on the kerbside (glass in one bin and plastics/cans in the other). Xtreme wishes you all a happy and safe Christmas and New Year.

Reminders: - Final Crop Swap for the year will be held Sunday 17th December at the Bowling Club - bring anything home made or home grown to share. Set up from 9.30am. - Let’s show our lovely summer visitors how proud we are to be plastic bag free here! Remember your reuseable bag or pop in to WEC to grab a Bag It bag for your shopping - Look out for the shopping guide in the Chronicle Summer Guide to find out where to shop to support all the wonderful businesses accredited as ‘Plastic Bag Free’

Multi-purpose creative space set to rise behind Old School

Rodger, with plans in hand, shows where the two-storey creative space will be sited.

$150,000 lotteries grant has cleared the A way for work to begin next

April on building a multifunctional creative space at Raglan’s Old School Arts Centre in Stewart Street that will provide “additional capacity” to meet growing community needs. The $488,000 project will replace both the old clay shed and a Lions Club shed alongside with a two-storey structure whose upstairs level will cater for everything from theatre and music to drama and tai chi. Downstairs, potters will have their own kiln room while local Lions will have a better area to sort

and launder secondhand clothes destined for their popular op shop in Wallis Street. “These are the things the community identified as important (to have) a few years ago,” Raglan Community Arts Council chair Rodger Gallagher told the Chronicle. “And we think we have enough funding now to get started.” Rodger reckons he’s “lost count” of the funding applications he prepared last year to try to get the project off the ground. “Several people have turned us down,” he admits. But a recent Lottery Grants Board contribution of $150,000 has given the arts council the confidence to go ahead with the

build, he says, even though it’s still shy of about $100,000. In approving the grant the board’s community facilities committee – which in its latest round was only able to approve 30 percent of requests as they totalled a whopping $27 million – said the Raglan community had clearly expressed its need and support of the new facility. The Old School project attracted its first funding about this time last year from the Logan Campbell Estate, which historically looks after the old Auckland province of which Raglan was a part. Other funders include the St Lazarus Trust – which some years back also helped with the clay shed – Raglan Community Board,

Raglan Lions Club, Waikato Wellbeing Trust, WEL Energy Trust and Trust Waikato. A lot of hard work by volunteers and “amazing” support from the Whaingaroa community as a whole has paid off, Rodger says. “We will be continuing with fundraising activities so we have enough to complete the project. With this and a frugal approach to construction we are confident we can do it.” He adds that in parallel with fundraising the arts council has been working through Waikato District Council’s regulatory and other approval processes since 2015, and hopes to have the final stamp of approval early next year. At 134 years the Old School is Raglan’s oldest building without

significant recent modifications, and continues to be a focus for the community as a learning and activities centre. It was saved from demolition around 1980 through a campaign led by prominent local activist Eva Rickard and the first chair of the local arts council, Glen Young. Volunteers then worked for the next decade on refurbishing and restoring the building, with other enhancements continuing over the years. It was relaunched as the Old School Arts Centre in 2005, and three years later registered as a Historic Place category ll by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust. Edith Symes

XZW kerbside foodwaste update

Foodwaste is turned in to nutrient rich compost.

F

oodwaste is the number one contributor to the greenhouse gas methane and leachate generation in landfill sites. New landfills often attempt to capture methane, although recovery levels are low, and the food waste is still the main source of acidic and toxic leachate which moves through the landfill into groundwater and nearby streams. Although new landfills are lined there are no landfills in the world that don’t leak. Waste audits conducted by Xtreme Zero Waste (XZW) estimated that 27% of waste to landfill from the Raglan community was food waste, and that it was the single heaviest component in pre-paid landfill bags once the recycling is removed. With this knowledge, Xtreme Zero Waste took on the task of creating Aotearoa’s first community food waste pickup project,

officially known as the Kerbside Foodwaste Collection. The Xtreme team spent five years planning and trialling various systems before they decided on the preferred method to introduce into the community. Cain Brodie, Xtreme’s Operations Manager extraordinaire, worked alongside the engineers to design and implement what is known as the hot composting unit (HCU), which sits up at XZW. Since the launch of Xtreme’s Kerbside Foodwaste Collection project in August 2017, Whaingaroa has diverted over 30 tonnes of food waste from landfill! The foodwaste is collected alongside the other kerbside recycling every Monday and Tuesday by Darryl, Xtreme’s expert in waste collection (if you see him doing foodwaste collection or morning/evening street bin

collection, be sure to tell him thanks!)... The foodwaste is then dropped off at the HCU where it is mixed with shredded garden waste. The HCU is a specialised unit that utilises oxygen to breakdown the foodwaste and create finished compost in 12-15 weeks time. XZW has been diverting other organic products from landfill, including wood, paper, cardboard and greenwaste. The introduction of the foodwaste project further aiding in the reduction of carbon emissions being made in landfill, especially methane, which is x times more potent than carbon dioxide from burning of fuels.. This could lead to an application to central government to exempt Raglan waste to pay carbon tax which is currently paid by ratepayers for each tonne dumped in the landfill. Xtreme would like to thank the community for their dedication in using the foodwaste collection service. The uptake of the service has been extremely positive and households are doing their best to follow the guidelines of only giving XZW their foodwaste. During the busy Summer holidays please check for any rubbish in your kitchen caddy before putting your bag into the kerbside bin for pickup. If you are heading away for a holiday over the coming week and would like to drop your foodwaste up to Xtreme before you go, there will be a wheelie bin available for foodwaste drop off on-site at Xtreme from Friday 22nd December. Just ask the friendly XZW yardstaff. If you have run out of the kitchen caddy bin liners, use the note at the bottom of your compostable bag pack (or write out your own note) and place it in your kerbside bin, on top of your foodwaste bags. Darryl will see the note and place some new bags into your bin. New bags can also be collected from Xtreme free of charge. Karamea Puriri For more information on the Kerbside Foodwaste Collection project, visit http:// xtremezerowaste.org.nz.

going plastic bag free

uperValue Raglan is pleased to announce that they are going S plastic carry bag free from noon this Thursday, 21st December.

Sanjay says “we are making this move to support the local drive to keep our environment free from single use plastic bag pollution. We understand that encouraging people to bring a reusable bag is the best solution for environmental health. We want to support our community in taking care of our environment and understand that a small charge for single use bags is a good way to help this to happen.” Compostable bags will still be available at a reduced cost of 0.10cents per bag, and a limited supply of cardboard boxes will be provided. The move this side of Christmas is important to limit plastic bag use during the busy summer season. Heading to Supervalue Raglan to do your shopping from now on? Remember your reusable bag!

Ancient irrigation on trial at Te Uku Outdoor bowls roundup

From left - Emily Stockton, Maelan Schwarz, Tara Edmonds and Jodie Sharples show off their handmade olla.

T

e Uku School students have taken gardening back to Ancient Rome with hand-built clay irrigation pots. The Year 7 and 8 students have around 12 ollas to trial in their permaculture garden and hope to get them humming along for next year’s planting. Sculpted with the help of local potter Clare Wimmer, the project took about two days over a period of several weeks using various pottery techniques to create the clever little water tanks. “Te Uku seniors were absolutely fantastic to work with, they co-created the pots and working in collaboration, they were a very well-organised cohesive team,” she says. Also used for cooking, storage and as funerary urn, the unglazed ollas let water seep out slowly and reduce the amount of daily watering required. The olla is buried next to the roots of the plant, with the neck extending above the soil and provides an efficient watering method, with little water lost to evaporation or run-off. Clare says the ollas can be used as a passive automatic drip system and installed in raised beds, garden beds or alongside trees to dramatically save water and watering time.

“I have the feeling water conservation will be really important, all the way through to March 2018.” Jodie Sharples, 12, Emily Stockton, 13, Maelan Schwarz, 12 and Tara Edmonds, 11 say they have learned a good deal of science as well as having fun with clay. “When it waters the plants it’s called osmosis,” Jodie says. “You only need to fill them with water two or three days a week,” Maelan says. Like all good Kiwi kids, they especially loved getting their hands dirty making the olla. “I loved squishing the clay, it feels so nice,” Tara says. “When we got to do the neck (of the olla) we used the potting wheel which was fun,” Emily says. The project is part of the Whaingaroa Environment Centre education programme 'Junior Enviro Club' delivered by Charlotte Pearsall, teaching students how to grow food, create their own school garden and learn about permaculture principles. TWILIGHT BOWLS: The weather Gods were on our side for this round with a good run through for the full five weeks. We had a full green of 16 teams and there were some very competitive games played. The new members are developing their skills well and their enthusiasm if great to see. Having two categories for prizes the winning team with non-bowlers in it were the team named Here for a Beer, Doug and Karen and Tate with 26 points. The runners up in this section were the team named ‘1,2,3’, Jeff, and Liz and Robin, with 24 points. Close game there. The winners of the section with a bowler in the team was the team called “The Wharfies’, Jim, Paul and Sue (substituted with Murray and Terry on the last night) with 28 points. Congratulations to you all. The next session of Twilight Bowls is scheduled to start on Tuesday, February 13. So plan ahead and get your team in to Bob: 021 825 869. CHAMPIONSHIP FOURS: This was held over this past weekend December 16 and 17. Again the weather Gods

played their part, extremely warm weather to play in. Five teams of four players entered, which created a Bye situation. We played the system of having to win two games to qualify into the post section day on Sunday, and three teams qualified. The games were very exciting with very close scores but the winning team was Colin Bouzaid, Heather Dableth, John Carr and Murray Eddy. Murray substituted for James Bond from day one. Congratulations all. CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR BOWLS: Our bowling greens are open for the general public to use over the holiday period, contact Jim 8257599 or Eileen 8258323 to organise. Our annual New Year's Eve day tournament is on again at 12.45pm, on Sunday, December 31 at 19 James Street. All Welcome. Flat soled shoes a must, $5 entry with 100% pay-out. Come along, have a go and enjoy the fun and comradeship. Merry Christmas and a safe happy new year to you all. Happy bowling Eileen Stephens
