Principal, Marjory O’Connell, says the school has been competing for more than 12 years in the Xtreme Zero Waste Recycled Raft Race. “It’s become a big part of our community and it draws the Waitetuna community down to Māui Dolphin Day, which I think is a bonus.” Affectionately known as Seven Barrels, the raft is reassembled each year with the help of parent and experienced raft guide, Ken Benseman, and the senior students finetune and add design features to improve the raft. Dubbed the Waitetuna Warriors, the student paddlers are hoping to do better than their third placing last year.

Balancing and paddling have always topped the finetuning list and Georgie Benseman says they can learn from last year’s mistakes. “A lot of people wanted to go on the raft and they were scraping the paddles because they weren’t in sync.” Jayden Meade reckons the recipe for raft race success is a simple one which involves team work and speed. “We just need to paddle hard and work together.” To register for the Recycled Raft Race, pick up a form at Xtreme Zero Waste, Whāingaroa Environment Centre or register from 10am on the day of the race - Xtreme Zero Waste is offering 50% off all rafting materials. Janine Jackson Māui Dolphin Day is Saturday, March 3 at Te Kopua Domain / Papahua from 11am-3pm and the raft race starts at 11.45.

Tourism impacts on local infrastructure and economy

T

he Raglan Community Board is looking for solutions to the impact more than 22,000 visitors a week to Raglan during the summer are having on the local infrastructure and economy. A report commissioned by the Waikato District Council and tabled at the February community board meeting looked at options to cater for the growing tourist market. As well as the impact on the local infrastructure, the report also highlighted the huge amount of money generated by the tourist dollar. A major contributor to the local Raglan economy, tourism contributed $120 million

to the Waikato District economy last year and tourism expenditure in the district has grown at an average of 8.6 percent annually for the past three years. Infrastructure improvements outlined in the report included upgrading substandard road segments on the Wainui Road segment to Wainui Beach, a shuttlebus service between Raglan Wharf and Manu Bay during the summer peak period, and including stops at the Recreation Sports Park carpark, town centre and Manu Bay, and promoting spill-over parking from the town centre to Marine Parade and the Raglan Recreation/Sports Reserve carpark as some of the options.

Other options put forward in the report to alleviate visitor impact on the town include a walk and cycle trail from the Raglan Wharf to the Wainui Beach carpark, a new walkway from the Raglan Sports Reserve’s carpark to the intersection of Wallis and Puriri Streets and adding cultural tourism activities or new events in the winter offseason. Community board chair Bob McLeod says the report highlights the need to look at a user-pay system for services such as parking and earmarking the revenue solely for Raglan. Currently, money received from parking fines goes straight into the council’s pool of funds and Bob says the community board would like to explore having money raised from parking and other user-pay services committed to Raglan. “We will only introduce [user-pays] if it can go into a Raglan account.” The community board is also considering amending the parking bylaw to allow the introduction of permitted parking in the town, and Bob says this could also include boat ramp parking. Currently, the boat ramps are serviced by the Waikato District Council and Bob says ultimately ratepayers are paying for a large majority of out-of-town boaties’ access to the ramps. The board will hold a community workshop prior to the April community board meeting to discuss the implications arising from the report. “We know where the problems are, we want people to come with solutions,” he says. The report is available to read online at www.waikatodistrict.govt.nz/yourcouncil/council-committees-boards/ community-boards-and-committees/ raglan-community-board. Janine Jackson

Tarot Talk

H

ello again from Tarot Talk - a weekly column in which I introduce a Tarot card for the week and provide a little information about it. I hope you continue to enjoy this space.

This week's card is the Five of Pentacles. This card can suggest that you have faced or are facing considerable burdens and/or have experienced a financial/resources loss. There is (or has been) a feeling of being shut out or excluded and you have no doubt experienced very real fears about how you were going to manage, especially financially. What we earn gives us status. When that is uncertain, then we feel uncertain. Maybe you feel disabled (as represented by the figures in the Rider-Waite deck?) What’s making you feel that way? This card can also indicate an element of spiritual impoverishment or the feeling that you have to support someone else at the cost of your own dreams/happiness /comfort. Sometimes we may find ourselves in a situation where outside forces (social, institution, family, friends etc) can’t help us and we have to face our problems on our own. The Five of Pentacles tells of a need to lift your gaze, change your focus. You may also find support from others in a similar position and these contacts may become good friends. Consider new options and you may discover another resource that will help you. More information about this card, and others that I have reviewed, can be found on my Tarot Talk Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/tarottalknz/ Tarot readings and tuition are available by appointment. Boutique surf school chuffed at prospect of fly-in clients

Green Wave surf instructors Ryan, left, and Zennor check out the surf conditions.

G

reen Wave surf school looks set to have some high-flying clients before the summer’s through. Now into its second season and rated New Zealand’s top surf school on TripAdvisor, the Raglan school has teamed up with Heletranz to provide lessons for high-end clients choppered in down the coast from Auckland. The surf and heli package deal – highlighted in the New Zealand Herald’s travel section early this month and costing a cool $1495 per person – includes a 2.5 hour private lesson with one of Green Wave’s three instructors before the 30-minute flight back to Albany, taking in the Big Smoke’s dormant volcanic cones and Sky Tower. The four-hour morning tour is billed as suitable for either beginner surfers or for “experts” wanting to experience Raglan, “the surf capital of New Zealand”.

Local instructor, Ryan Bellerby, says, when asked why Heletranz (which offers a series of premier helicopter experiences), might have partnered with Green Wave in its latest initiative, “I think it’s because of the [online] reviews.” He told the Chronicle he and fellow instructors, Bing Lyons and one-time local pro surfer Zennor Wernham, have more than 30 years of coaching experience between them, and the feedback they’ve had since setting up on their own has been “amazing”. They’ve had no bad reviews. “All perfect,” Ryan reckons. One beginner surfer raved over her recent surf and stay package, describing the teachers as “passionate” and inspiring confidence. Another traveller rated Green Wave, both at the beach and “chilling” back at its Raglan West home-stay, as his favourite experience on his extensive journey.

The Green Wave trio pride themselves on their points of difference. “First-up we wanted to keep things smaller and focus on the quality of the lesson,” Ryan says. And they do only one lesson a day just after high tide when the conditions are usually better. So, “every day is different” and there’s the flexibility, for instance, to include sunset lessons. Free photos of the experience are included for every Green Wave client, and there’s a ‘stand up or your money back’ guarantee. Green Wave is one of the more recent of a plethora of surf schools now operating in Raglan. They include the original Raglan Surfing School (now into its 18th year), Solscape’s in-house surf school, Surf Safe Coaching, Up Surf Coaching, Indies Surfschool led by local pro, Miles Ratima, and DK Surf School run by local surfing legend Daniel Kereopa. Butcher battles the best in the business R aglan’s newest butcher, James Marcum, is sharpening his knives to battle 20 of the best in the industry at the upcoming New Zealand Butcher Wars at Meatstock in Auckland this weekend. Representing Raglan’s Top Cut Butchery, James is putting his more than 30 years in the industry on the chopping block in the hotly contested competition. “I don’t enter for the fun of it, I enter to win,” he says. With more than $1500 worth of prizes at stake, the butchers go knife-to-knife on stage as they work their blades on a side of lamb and cuts of pork to present to the judges in 30 minutes. This is James’ second go at the title – he was a finalist last year - and says he learnt that presentation is a big part of the competition. “I had my meat plated on a black tray in plenty of time and then I looked to one side and the guy was presenting on a fancy plate with champagne and glasses and the guy on my other side served up on a nice wooden board.” James has got a Raglan-inspired trick up his sleeve this year. With help from Raglan Surf Co he will serve his cuts on a surfboard. The competition is more than just slicing up meat and with 1000 plus in the audience, James says there needs to be a little bit of drama on stage.

James Marcum will be showcasing his butcher skills at Metstock this weekend.

“I’m representing Raglan, so I plan to walk on stage to Phil Collins’ ‘Home by the Sea’.” Starting his career as a clean-up boy at the Bader Street Butchers in Hamilton, James has worked with some of the best in the industry, including old-time Butcher, Bill Waring, and Aussie Master Butcher, Tony Fox. Calling himself a Māorican, James’ American father served in the US Navy and was stationed in Christchurch when

he met his mother, who is connected to Whāingaroa and Kawhia through her mother, Moke. His competitive streak is not just reserved for butchery competitions. James played for the Wolfpack baseball team, who took out the 2017 World Masters Games. He hopes to bring baseball to Raglan and is keen to hear from anyone interested in putting a team together - contact James at Top Cut Butchery, 2 Wallis Street. Janine Jackson

T

he morning waves were pumping at Manu Bay this past Saturday, setting up what would turn out to be a perfect day from dawn until dusk for the 2018 Raglan Point Boardriders’ King of the Single Fin contest. Going in its fourth year, the contest had its biggest competitor turnout yet with 100 entrants over the course of the day. The rules are simple–the contest is all ages, with no gender divisions, so surfers young and old compete against one another. The only stipulation: you have to ride a retro (before the '80s) single fin surfboard. Manu Bay was packed by lunch with competitors along with families, friends and

onlookers, who stayed for hours to watch the competition unfold. The BBQ sizzled, the music played, the waves pumped, and while the smiles and laughter grew, the idea of “Making Manu Bay Great Again” was achieved. By the day’s end the finalists were called in and prize giving kicked off with a few notable mentions including: Best Grom and Best Barrel to Puarere Kelly, Best Wahine to Ariel Hughes, Best Bolter to Freddy Limbert, Best Wave by Crowd Nomination to Jake Gibbs, Best Senior to Chris Banks and finally Worst Performance of the day to Lou Vincent, who managed to score himself a gift certificate from Raglan Roofing without catching a wave. And of course, no single fin contest is complete without the main event of the day, the infamous Pie Eating Contest. Sarah was crowned the Grom Pie Queen for the Grom Pie contest while Matti Thorley-Symes walked away as Pie King after a 2nd round ‘pie off’ against Dylan Brown. This year’s overall King of the Single Fin finalists werel: 1st Mikey Banks, 2nd Luke Hughes, 3rd Luca Bordignon, 4th Jayden Willoughby, 5th Puarere Kelly and 6th Caleb Cutmore. The Raglan Point Boardriders would like to thank the 2018 King of the Single Fin spot prize sponsors: B-Rex Photography, Byrning Spears Surfboards, Camenzind Surfboards, Hughes Surfboards, Pilot Brewery, Raglan Concrete Services, Raglan Roofing, Raglan Surf Emporium, Raglan Surf Co, and main event sponsor Kyle Leuthart and LJ Hooker. T

his week we spoke to Margaret Dillon, known better around the community and to a lot of the local rangatahi (youth) as ‘Aunty Margaret’.

You spend a lot of time with the rangatahi in our community. What have you learned from them? It’s like looking at a book, and you’re not really sure of it at first. But once you get to know them, they’re not how you would assume that they are. And you’re able to guide them and learn from each other. Why do you think it’s important to be active within your community? They are our future. If we can help them now, then later on when they’re older they’ll do the same for the younger ones. Sometimes some kids need a little bit more guidance or just someone to talk to. You’re rarely seen without your camera, what do you enjoy taking photos most of and why? People. Capturing moments. When my father passed I had next to no photos of him, so I made a pact with myself to get a camera and take more photos of the people around me. Aside from taking photos, what do you enjoy doing in your spare time? I love making cards and crafts. I go up to the rest home and make cards with one of the residents that I met at Care and Craft who also loves to make cards. Community Heroes is an occasional column featuring volunteers in our community. Sponsored by West Coast Health Clinic, 12 Wallis Street, ph. 07 825 0114.

“Margaret is always supportive of our rangatahi. She is always encouraging and actively participating in all activities at school - she is one of the stalwart supports for all school events.” - Lisa Thomson “Margaret supports numerous activities and groups in Whaingaroa, from feeding kids at RAS and transporting them to sporting venues, to visiting and doing crafts with the elderly at the rest home. She supports the community by taking and sharing her photographs of all events we have in town. She motivates people to give back to the community. All the local youths love her and call her Aunty Margaret.” - Whaea Wake We caught up with Margaret to find out more about the wonderful contributions she has been quietly making... You spent some time at Raglan Area School last year making food for the rangatahi. How did that come about? I was in a classroom helping out a teacher in the cooking room, and she had two classes going at the time. One was doing paperwork and one was doing cooking. And one of the students said she was quite hungry. I asked her why she didn’t eat breakfast that morning, and she quietly said that there wasn’t any food at home for her to have breakfast or lunch. So, she’s really what inspired me. I was thinking about what she had said that night and couldn’t sleep, so the next day I went to Whaea Bronwyn to talk to her about an idea I had. Because there was no Tuck Shop at the time, I decided to do Telephone: 825 0114 toasted sandwiches for $1, and After hours: also made vouchers for teachers to give to kids who didn’t have Anglesea Clinic 07 825 0800 any money.
