The generator is just one piece of work which forms part of Waikato District Council’s Wastewater Overflow Continuous Improvement Programme and will ensure the pumps in the area continue to work if there is a power outage. This will in turn protect the harbour from overflows. Portable generators have been used in Raglan during recent storms to keep the pump stations operating while the town experienced a power cut, but as Greenslade Road is tricky to navigate, especially in wet weather and in the middle of the night, it was decided a

permanent generator was needed. Local residents have assisted Council in the past, allowing servicemen access to their properties to do the work they need to do. Installing this piece of machinery will hopefully mean that won’t be needed going forward. “We do thank the locals for being so understanding in the past and while the generator was being installed,” Acting General Manager Service Delivery Jacki Remihana says. Ms Remihana also wanted to take the time to remind Raglan residents about the 3 P’s – only pee, poo and toilet paper should go down the loo. WDC

Second time unlucky as thieves hit Fallenfront again

T

hieves have ram raided local Raglan store Fallenfront again in a little over a month.

Steve is thankful of the support from the community following the second ram raid incident to hit his store.

The Wainui Rd store was targeted in the early hours of the morning last Thursday and owner Steve Crowhurst says over $10,000 worth of stock was stolen. Bearing similarities to a previous incident at the store on Waitangi Day, where thieves stole around $4000 worth of clothing, Steve says there is no evidence at this stage to link the two burglaries. Police arrested a 16-year-old man and charged him with burglary in the February incident. In the latest incident, the offenders driving a white Nissan or Honda model sedan smashed through the front doors to gain access to the store. Security cameras captured three to four offenders fleeing in a vehicle with damage to a tail light and missing a front left hubcap. Steve says he is grateful to the local community who have rallied around to offer support. “I’m really thankful for the locals’ support, just popping in to say hi or purchasing something from our sale.” Steve hopes to recoup some of the losses in the three-day sale held over the weekend and says he’s not looking forward to phoning the insurance company. Some members of the community have also stepped up and helped Steve pay for and install metal bollards to the front of the store. Anyone with information can call Hamilton police on 07 858 6200, or anonymously phone Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Janine Jackson

Tarot Talk

H

ello again from Tarot Talk - a weekly column in which I introduce a Tarot card for the week and provide a little information about it. I hope you continue to enjoy this space.

This week's card is The High Priestess. The High Priestess represents wisdom, serenity, knowledge and understanding. She is often described as the guardian of the unconscious. She sits in front of the thin veil of unawareness which is all that separates us from our inner landscape. She knows the secret of how to access these realms. She represents spiritual enlightenment and inner illumination. She is a representative of divine knowledge and wisdom. She has a good understanding of the universe and uses this knowledge to teach rather than to try to control others. She generally appears when you need to listen to and trust your inner voice. The High Priestess challenges us to go deeper, to look beyond the obvious. She reminds us of the vastness of our potential and to remember the unlimited possibilities we hold within ourselves. Knowledge will not come at this time through action or intellectual endeavour, but rather by listening to the inner voice of the spirit, which may be missed in the hurly-burly of chatter and busy-ness. Put aside times of silence when you can become aware and listen. More information about this card can be found on my Tarot Talk Facebook page https://www.facebook. com/tarottalknz/ Tarot readings and tuition are available by appointment. Txt Chrissy on 027 6644261. Note: I have moved from Raglan and now live in Ohaupo but I will still be available for readings in Raglan, or in my new location, by appointment. Once I establish a routine, I will be looking to come out to Raglan once a month for shorter, more casual readings where no appointment will be required. Watch this space!!

Acrobats go head over heels at festival’s expansive vista

Eva Rich, right, takes a yoga class in an inspiring setting.

S

pine-tingling feats of balance and agility were being performed all over Camp Raglan last weekend as 70odd acrobats from around the world came together for a series of training workshops in a “beautiful spot” high above Ngarunui beach. “We love Raglan … how could you not?” enthused Zanthe Watson who with partner Colin Prinn founded the threeday event – the New Zealand Acrobatics Festival – primarily in a bid to bring the level of skill down under up to world standards. Both teach regular acrobatic classes in Auckland and say the general level in New Zealand is low compared with the rest of the world. “There’s no sports acrobatics here (for instance),” Zanthe points out. The festival brought acrobats and trainers together from “all over the show” to flip, jump, cartwheel and contort, Zanthe told the Chronicle. New Zealand and Australian participants were joined by acrobats from Belgium, Brazil, the US and “everywhere”.

While most of the trainers across the 32 workshops were internationals, local instructor Eva Rich – who has her advanced yoga certification and takes a weekly class at Raglan Yoga Loft – was in charge of two sessions. Camp Raglan might be at her doorstep but Eva was equally taken by the expansive ocean views. “This is probably one of the most beautiful spots I’ve practised in,” she told her class as they stretched and breathed their way through a one-and-a-half hour outdoor session on the Sunday morning. Eva – currently studying at Wintec for a Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science – believes yoga is important every day for functional movement “but especially when doing really hard energetic programmes” like last weekend’s. Zanthe agrees: “Yoga comes in before or after a long day. It prepares the body and helps reduce injuries. It’s also important to have that relax time.” She likes to have as many Kiwi teachers as possible involved in any training here, citing an intensive workshop that was fitted

in last year between the annual festivals. International teachers came to teach New Zealand teachers in a programme designed to “upskill everybody”. This year’s festival hosted beginner, intermediate and advanced classes teaching partner yoga, duo and trio acrobatics, handstands, contortion, tumbling, poledancing and aerialists. Zanthe – who has been doing circus as a hobby for most of her life – says her favourite act for the past six years is duo acrobatics in which she balances on her partner’s hands. She was full of praise for ‘Duo Die’ – a Sydney-based couple with a serious love of partner acrobatics – who were also on site at Camp Raglan last weekend. Also training with them on the safety rig at the former Bryant Home children’s bible camp were sports acrobat Hilary Conroy from Sydney and French gymnastturned-theatre artist Jo Carvalho, now from Auckland, who teamed up as a duo for the first time. Bacon and eggs and grass roots funding go live on TVNZ Breakfast

TVNZ Breakfast roving reporter Matty McLean became an honorary lifeguard with the Raglan Surf Life Saving Club during Tuesday mornings segment.

T

he bacon and eggs were on Fonterra as the TVNZ Breakfast crew filmed live from the town hall on Tuesday morning. Breakfast roving reporter, Matty McLean, was in Raglan to catch up with the local groups benefiting from the Fonterra Grass Roots Fund. First up was Aaron Mooar from Raglan Radio who had to set his alarm earlier than usual for the 6.30am interview.

He told McLean the radio used grass roots funding to buy radio equipment to use in a civil defence emergency if they can’t access the station. Aaron says the equipment supports the station to broadcast information relevant to Raglan during an emergency. “We need local information for local solutions.” McLean also caught up with Karioi Maunga ki te Moana project manager and

Students from Waitetuna School performed a Samoan sasa during TVNZ Breakfast segment.

A Rocha national co-director, Kristel Van Houte, who received funding for GPS radio equipment to assist with communication and safety with the conservation work they do from Mount Karioi to the coast. Raglan Surf Life Saving group was also in on the action and McLean became an honorary life guard for the live cross. He spoke to Junior Surf convenor, Ann Snowden, about how they used the grass roots funding to purchase much-needed outboard motors, helmets and radio gear. She says the equipment was vital to ensure

the safety of the life guards during the busy summer season. “If we’re not there, then the beach goers aren’t safe.” The morning ended with Waitetuna School performing a Samoan sasa. The school received funding to support a literacy progamme for a further three years. Fonterra Grass Roots Fund supports a wide range of community projects with grants of between $500 and $5000 - applications close March 31, 2018. Janine Jackson

T

he Waikato Sport Fishing Club Thomsons ITM Raglan One Base was held at the Raglan Club last Thursday to Saturday.

We are all looking forward to Fish City Big Four and good sea conditions next month. Details on the WSFC website.

Again, it was a very popular and successful fishing derby over those days with many hook ups being reported and top catches weighing in across most species. The anglers left with great memories of their catch or the ones that got away, plus that west coast swell. Twenty-nine boats entered with 96 anglers. Without printing all the results for you, it’s best to say our local anglers gave the out of town fishos a run for their money. Local plumber, Matt Hassard, with son Cade and crew Craig Petrie on Vessel Mutley, won the coveted prized Thomson’s ITM cheque with Most Points Scored Overall, Veteran angler, Renee Doig, took out Top Snapper at 9.45kg on vessel Barbara Dawn.

What is your main genre of photography? I love to shoot so many different things, landscapes and travel, music and festivals, documentary and journalism, but my main source of income is from food and restaurants/ cafes, either for magazines or the eateries themselves. How did you first get interested in it? Did you study it? Like most people I've always had a keen interest in photography and would take my little digital camera with me everywhere. I eventually invested in a cheap DSLR, but it wasn't until years later when my son Leo was born that I actually started trying to learn how to use it on manual. Once that clicked for me I was obsessed and would shoot Leo all day, every day. From there, friends started asking me to shoot their kids and then I started on weddings, which is where I learnt so much about photography - looking for the best light and composition in a high pressure situation is a great way to polish your skills!

From there I started getting magazine work and was able to give up weddings and make photography a normal weekday job, so now I'm home for the kids in the weekends. I remember you kindly helping us out at the Chronicle years ago with a fashion shoot. What types of projects have you worked on in the past? Mainly just magazine work food, restaurants and cafes, portrait and documentary work, plus a few festivals (roll on Soundsplash 2018!). I recently had an amazing experience shooting for UNO magazine where I got to board a Royal New Zealand Navy ship in the middle of the ocean and shoot Lisa Munn at work, New Zealand's first female commanding officer. I spent five hours on board with Lisa and the crew. Now I'm trying to convince my son to join the navy! It's such an incredible way to make a living. What photography do you tend to do these days? Mainly food and restaurants, editorial stuff, plus a bit of landscape and travel. What is your favorite thing to shoot? Festivals/music, landscapes and travel, and beautiful restaurant/cafe dishes. How does being a photographer fit into living in Raglan? It can be quite difficult because of lot of my work is in Tauranga. It's often a five hour round trip for a one hour shoot, which doesn't really make sense, but I love Raglan and I wouldn't have it any other way. Your photos are featured on our tourist website Raglan Net and on the cover of the new directory. Are you available to provide images for local businesses that they can use on web and in print? Definitely! Anybody's welcome to get in touch with me for a chat. To get in touch with Tracie, check out her website: www. tracieheasmanphotographer.co.nz
