ork is underway behind the Raglan Old School Arts Centre for the new Creative Space building. Gone are the two garages that were once the Clay Shed and the Lions Op Shop sorting shed and in their place is the recently completed foundation for the new building. The multi-purpose building will take shape over the next few months and Clay Shed coordinator Susanne Prinz says it will be a labour of love with community businesses, organisations and individuals playing their part in the build. “We are very lucky to have an amazing

community in Raglan who are willing to jump on board with financial assistance, offers of equipment, skills and some good old Kiwi hard graft.” Rob Poolton’s Raglan Excavation excavated the foundation and completed the foundation pad. Assisting with this were Tom Jowsey from Te Mata Quarries who provided free disposal of debris at their site and supplied the base metal for the new foundation. Four Square Raglan owner Satnam Bains lent his forklift for free to allow items to be moved around the site. When an old water pipe ruptured, P&L Plumbing’s Peter Moir came to the rescue at

short notice to ensure the kids clay classes had water supply for their afternoon sessions. Despite all the building work, centre manager Jacqueline Anderson says the Old School is still open for business and the Raglan Creative Market continues to operate rain or shine. Kid’s Clay classes and other Clay Shed member activities are being held in the arts studio in the St Lazarus building behind the Old School. “Although the new building is a big undertaking we are well-prepared to keep delivering great events, workshops, movies and music as usual.” Janine Jackson

Tarot Talk

H

ello again from Tarot Talk - a weekly column in which I introduce a Tarot card for the week and provide a little information about it. I hope you continue to enjoy this space.

This week's card is The Emperor. If this card relates to a person, it represents someone who is strong and powerful some who can be a great friend or a formidable enemy. They are forthright and trustworthy but they can also be demanding or domineering and have high expectations of those to whom they give their support. It could relate to an employer or other “authority” figure and usually represents a strong, male figure in your life. This card could also represent your actual employment. The Emperor can also be representative of the sign of Aries. The lesson for Arians is self discipline and the Emperor has this in spades. He is practical, straightforward and unemotional. He is a sound business leader, military commander or a strict father. He shows success through self control. He has a passionate, enthusiastic response to living but understands that freedom comes from discipline. More information about this card can be found on my Tarot Talk Facebook page https:// www.facebook.com/tarottalknz/ Note: Tarot Talk will be an exhibitor at the Women's Lifestyle Expo at the Claudelands Event Centre this coming weekend, 26th and 27th May. Come and say hello. We will be doing three card, 15 minute readings for $20. Hope to see you there! Tarot readings and tuition are available by appointment. Txt Chrissy on 027 6644261

Wild weather tests waka ama crews from around the country

Some wild weather was seen during the regatta held at Papahua - Te Kopua Domain on Saturday. Images Below thanks to Margaret Dillon.

I

t was all seasons in one day for the 145 crews paddling in the annual Whaingaroa Hoe Waka Ama races held in Raglan last Saturday. Whaingaroa Hoe chair, Amber Hartstone, says the event was well received by all the participants, with many relishing the extreme conditions and action-packed racing. Organisers have regulations they have to abide by and Amber says safety of the crews is paramount. “We have weather limits for the event and crews have to wear life jackets and spray skirts.”

The novice and experienced crews of all ages battled strong gusts and torrential rain to paddle into top positions over the 8km and 24km courses. Starting at the Kopua boat ramp, crews attempted to avoid the wind and were often log-jammed under the bridge. Some struck sand banks as they turned the corner heading towards the harbour mouth. Amber says several boats flipped, but the crews are trained to deal with a capsize and support boats were never far away. It was a tight finish in the final men’s 24km race, with local team Nekeneke Whaingaroa pipped at the post by HOT Nga Hoe Horo with only four seconds separating the two waka. It was another close race in the novice

men’s 8km race with local crew Areare Whaingaroa notching up first place in the Novice Men’s 8km division and taking a close second to Oysters Reloaded Ngati Rehia in the overall Men’s 8km division with only seven seconds in it. Local female crew Whaia Te Tika Whaingaroa came ninth in the overall women’s 8km race and placed seventh in the junior women’s division. Amber’s pick for top race finishes were a masters women’s team, Mixed Up Ruamata, all aged 40 plus taking top honours in the 24km mixed race and a golden masters men’s crew of 60-years plus coming in 15th out of 37 much younger crews. COMMUNITY HEROES

Held as part of National Youth Week – May 19-27, co-organiser Naomi Tuao says the event is a great way to recognise the talents, passions and successes of local young people in a day-long festival of music, art, hip hop, yoga, African drumming, korero and more. “The theme this year is ‘be who you want to be’ and I think celebrating that is pretty important.” The event will also launch the Raglan Youth Innovation Project, a communitybased programme to engage, develop and empower youth with knowledge and skills through social and creative activities. “This project is designed to embrace the emerging needs of young people today who will be our future leaders of tomorrow,” she says. Naomi says it’s vital that Raglan listens to the voices of the younger generation in order for the town to stay relevant as it evolves and becomes more resilient in an ever-changing

world. “We need to listen to what our young people have to say about what’s important to them and what they want for Raglan.” Youth panellists Ataera Davey, Kaea Ruawai, Zahara Leng-Ware, Lexie Holmes and Rangi Rongo will explore the theme ‘be who you want to be! Be the change’, with opportunities for audience participation. Workshops are open to youth aged 1317 from 12-4pm at the Raglan Community House and Town Hall, and include yoga with Zahara Leng-Ware, African inspired dance with Monica Evans and Hip Hop with Royce Kerapa. There will also be screen-printing, body art, cultural games, mask-making and karaoke. Check out the free, all-ages performances at the Raglan Town Hall from 4.30-6.30pm by talented young musicians Majestic Unicorns, Teia Kennedy, Cloak Bay, and Joel and Emily at the town hall. And don’t miss the delicious food stall fundraiser for the Raglan Area School ball. Janine Jackson

Queenie’s volunteer work a lifetime’s labour of love

Queenie Tukiri.

Q

ueenie Tukiri may be 87 next Sunday but there’s little sign of her slowing down when it comes to helping out in the community

Not that she’s one to talk much about her near lifetime’s labour of love. “I’ve done a lot of voluntary work most of my life,” is all she’ll admit to the Chronicle in typically understated fashion, not mentioning

for example the Queen’s Service Medal she’s picked up along the way for her marathon efforts. That bit of information came instead from local St John ambulance station manager Bush Barton. “Queenie goes way back (in St John),” he says. “She was one of the originals.” No sooner had Raglan got its first ambulance in 1975 than Queenie was studying in Hamilton for the nursing certificate which would see her “out on calls” for years to come. Says local nurse Tracy Frew, who worked alongside her for a time: “She was an active ambulance officer doing whatever was required … and then she was on the committee (as she is to this day).” Queenie loves being involved in St John Raglan and says that tending the patients – many of whom she knew – was always better than driving the ambulance. She was also closely tied to Raglan Volunteer Fire Brigade through her late husband Bill, a firefighter for more than 25 years, and as a life member has since become the service’s unofficial ‘mother’. “We all love her to bits,” fire chief Kevin Holmes was heard to say a few years back at one of the brigade’s annual honours nights when Queenie was busy handing out awards. Queenie has also served over the years on the Raglan Club executive, and was on the organising committee of the area school’s 125th anniversary. She was a pupil at the old school in Stewart Street up until standard four – the equivalent of today’s year six – before moving to what was then the new district high school

in Norrie Avenue to complete her primary education. Queenie reckons she started her lifetime’s work of volunteering soon after that, certainly while still a young single woman. Then came married life and the bringing up of six children, three of whom are still in Raglan while the others have moved across the ditch. She remains dedicated now to the marae she and Bill, along with the late Eva and Tex Rickard, fundraised for and started up around 1960. “Queenie is always at Poihakena marae, in a kaumatua or Maori elder role,” says Angeline Greensill, daughter of Tex and Eva. There Queenie has the backup or passive role of “being seen”, Angeline explains. And when there’s a tangi on at the marae, for instance, her role is to “keep the place warm”. “She’s got continuity,” Angeline adds. And if anyone wants to know

someone’s background or family history, Queenie is the ‘go to’ person. She is also still a trustee on the Whaingaroa Ki te Whenua Trust which was set up in the early 80s after the return of land taken by the Government – then used as Raglan’s original golf course – to its Maori owners. This octogenarian has spent almost her whole life in Raglan, having come across the harbour as a four or five year old from Te Akau where she was born. Queenie says “the Maori side of things” – both the marae and the Kokiri Centre – is important to her. She recalls often just sitting with the elderly there, comforting them. “I love my life in Raglan,” she insists. “I’ve had a bit of everything – the good, the bad and the beautiful times.”

Queenie receiving her 32 year service medal from St John.

Mudsharks for Raglan Bar

O

n Sunday June 3 (Queen’s Birthday weekend), Raglan band the ‘legendary Mudsharks will be heading for the bar at the Raglan Club along with West Coast Jazz and, introducing a brand new band, Bruce Dennis and the Dab Hands. The Mudsharks began as Dave Maybee and Sid Limbert playing acoustic guitars and mandolins in the front bar of the Harbour View Hotel in Bow St, Raglan, early 1981. They played every second Monday night in the Settlers Lounge. As time went by other players were added and before long electric instruments and sound systems appeared. The band grew, and so did the reputation of the ‘Mudshark Mondays’. Old Raglan identity, saxophone player/singer/dancer/and entertainer, Clarry Cresswell, became a regular with the boys. Midge Marsden moved to town and often brought back touring musicians who stopped in for a few days’ R and R and turned up at one of the nights for some fun. Rock star and now legend, Dave McArtney, arrived in town and in turn so did a lot of his mates. drummer Kevin Thomas also came to stay in town and was the regular drummer for a long time. We head for the Bar this time mindful of the odd one of us who has

gone over the bar and out into the open sea never to return. Clarry, Dave Mac, Kev Thomas, Ritchie Pickett, Mike Farrell, and the latest was our first drummer and very close mate Paul Kunak. Rest in peace. So, the show will kick off with West Coast Jazz, an all-star cast with Greg Taylor (keys) Grant Mason (trumpet and flugelhorn) Bill Forest (alto, tenor, and soprano sax) gentleman Jack Porima (double bass) Freddy Limbert (drums). They play some really hot and very groovy stuff. Then the Mudsharks will jump up. This year they again featuring a 10-piece band. From left to right, Liam Ryan (keys/vocals) Peter Skandera (harmonica) Dave Maybee (guitars/vocals) Freddy Limbert (drums/vocals) Sid Limbert (bass/ vocals) Gary Verberne (guitars) Bill Forest (saxophones) Grant Mason (horns) and Greg Taylor (trombone/ keys). This time Midge is away with his own band, so he won't be there. He'll be Missed, but a new band made up of some of the old band will feature with Bruce Dennis and the Dab Hands. Bruce is not only a very talented multi-instrumental musician and a brilliant song writer, he has toured with a number of Australasian and international artists. He also has a deep, very honest and rare ‘soulful’ voice. His songs are great - he received Country Music Song of the Year for ‘Ain’t Gonna Run’ at the 2008 New Zealand Country Music Awards. It's going to be a great night. "I know it," said Sid Limbert.

Stress can have both a good side and a bad side.

P

eople are capable of incredible feats, whether that be sporting excellence, outstanding bravery or creative brilliance, all of which may be encouraged by healthy stress levels. Severe and prolonged distress, however, has been linked to mental health issues. Physiologically, stress causes disruption to endocrine and neural pathways. It activates the flight or fight response, releasing cortisol and adrenaline into the bloodstream, increasing heart rate and blood pressure. In the short term this can boost performance, focus, memory and

creativity, but at a certain level its benefits disappear and performance declines. Everyone reacts to stress in different ways, the trick is to identify your own stressresponse pattern and learn how to manage it. Prolonged stress is associated with exhaustion and stress-induced symptoms such as anxiety, fatigue, depression, headaches and lowered immunity. Fortunately, herbal medicine provides us with an arsenal of different herbs to help when under stress. One of our favourite herbs is Withania, an adaptogenic herb that helps the body to adapt to stress. Along with herbal medicine, there are several other techniques that are useful in reducing stress.

Raglan Naturally future focus workshop was held recently at the Kokiri Centre, bringing together local guest

speakers and interested our community in the years to come. community members to discuss

some

emerging

trends which might shape

Raglan Naturally committee chair Anna Cunningham says the workshop is one of many community conversations about the

future of Whaingaroa. “How lucky we are to have so many knowledgeable and inspiring people in our community. I look forward to continuing to have these future-focused conversations throughout the Raglan Naturally process.” Climate change was a common theme of many of the presentations, Anna says, with the speakers talking about the predicted impacts, but also the opportunities for Raglan to become a resilient community facing these future challenges. “A lot of the conversation revolved around how climate change will impact on all areas of our lives and how important it is to be considering the short, medium and long-term implications for our community.” Facilitated by climate change policy expert Charlotte Catmur, the workshop was designed to take a look at the issues facing Whaingaroa now and into the future. Guest speakers came from a range of different backgrounds all with a vested interest in the Whaingaroa region. Hapu environmental advocate Angeline Greensill talked about

the past, present and future of Iwi and hapu planning, Ngati Mahanga spokesperson Heather Thomson discussed tribal challenges and aspirations, Waitetuna’s Naked Dairy owner Mike Moss talked about the challenges and opportunities for the rural sector and Xtreme Zero Waste relationship manager Rick Thorpe talked about future-proofing Whaingaroa’s waste management systems. Raglan Electric Bikes owner Niall Darwin discussed how technology can influence our future, Raglan Timebank’s Di Jennings talked about the positive impact of alternative economic systems and Waikato District Council’s senior policy planner Kelly Nicolson was a voice for the council. Also presenting via video, Dr Robin Youngson discussed the emotional, psychological and spiritual wellbeing of communities. "Thanks to Angeline and Alan Greensill for hosting us at the Kokiri Centre, to all of our speakers for an interesting and engaging morning and to the Raglan Community Board for funding the workshop." Rugby we didn't have quite enough players to have separate 6th and 7th grade teams, so, we merged the two. This gives us quite a wide range in both ages, 3year-old to 6-year-olds, and experience from the never-played-before to those who are in their third year of playing ripper rugby. How has the season started for the team?

it fun. It is always great when it’s a close game and all the kids get to have a good run on the field. What is the goal for these young ones over the season?

Our goal for this season is to develop as a team and help each child get the most out of playing so that they want to continue on in the game for years to come. Any shout outs to the people involved?

Remember those who cannot remember

T

his week is Dementia Awareness Week. Dementia or memory loss is usually associated with the elderly and as we are living longer it is be more common. Alzheimer’s is the largest group (about 60%).

Stress can have both a good side and a bad side.

Dear Editor Did you know that in the year to March 2017 there were 456 business units in Raglan? Although that was down 9.0% from a year earlier that is a much higher number than I realised. When you consider that only about 401 of those business have a shop or business frontage in the township (CBD), that leaves a whopping 400 or so tucked away in the rest of Raglan. Goodness, where are they all hiding? These 456 business units employed 1631 people, up 2.8% from a year earlier. Employment in New Zealand increased by 2.4% over the same period. The largest employer in Raglan is Raglan Area School followed by Super Value. Given that there were 53502 resident population in Raglan in the same period it means that 30% of Raglan’s population were employed within Raglan. Though many of these businesses are sole traders (single owner/ operator), it none-the-less is a higher figure then most of us probably realised.

Among broad industries, Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing was the largest in Raglan in 2017 accounting for 17.7% of total. The second largest was Rental, Hiring and Real Estate Services (13.2%) followed by Construction (7.0%). No real surprises there. All this is to say that Raglan is a great place to set up a business. Unlike many small rural or coastal towns in New Zealand, Raglan is serviced by very good business infrastructure so that we can do business reasonably efficiently. We have a good postal and courier service, fast internet, and very good cell coverage in most spots in our town. We are home to a growing group of very enterprising people who are willing to take a risk and ‘give it a go’.

This was our Annual Hangi Tournament, kindly sponsored again by Hilda Ross Retirement Village. We were privileged to have Trish de Jong, the Manager of Hilda Ross, with us during the day. Trish did the presentations to the winning team of Denis Pizer, Jack Peel and Des Bishop of Raglan. They had four wins and 37 points. Second place was Ross Turner, Eileen Stephens and Les Schlager of Raglan, with four wins and 29 points. In third place were Neil Rollo, Yanny Split and Alan Coates from Taupiri with three wins and 26 points. Congratulations to you all. Unfortunately, the weather showed its damp side again and so we had to use the

Rain Bell to get through with the last game only managing to play three ends to complete it. We were treated to a lovely hangi lunch through the great skills of Blue Stephens and Terry Green, who got it all underway at 6.30am. The smells drifting across the green really tempted the taste buds. Thanks guys once again, you did it well. Teams came from Tui Park (Te Aroha), Te Kuiti, Taupiri, Huntly, Frankton Junction, Hilda Ross, and we had five local teams.. Our next Open Winter tournament is scheduled for Saturday June 9. Here’s hoping the weather behaves for us. We still have Roll-ups on Wednesdays and Saturdays with a report in time of 12.45pm, weather permitting. Our AGM and Prize-Giving are to be held on Sunday June 17 at 10am, where we will get together to share a pot-luck luncheon. Happy bowling, , Eileen Stephens.

O

ur first Winter Tournament was postponed due to wet weather, so was re-scheduled to be held on May 19.

Vascular Dementia and Lewy Body Dementia are the next most common groups. There are many other diseases which can produce forgetfulness, anxiety, depression confusion and the symptoms may overlap. Sometimes we have no control over memory loss; it may be is inherited, an accident, or linked to other diseases like Parkinson’s and Huntington’s Disease or Type Two Diabetes. Unaddressed hearing loss, untreated depression, loneliness and a sedentary lifestyle may lead to dementia. However, there are choices which can improve the chances of keeping our brains functioning efficiently to the end of our days: a healthy lifestyle, which involves a good balanced diet, regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding heart damaging substances such as sugar, alcohol and smoking. A strong heart is linked to a healthy brain.

While there is no specific Dementia Group in Raglan, Dementia Waikato (Hamilton), Age Concern, the Local Medical Centre and the Raglan Community House can direct individuals and families to find help. Senior Citizens, Care and Craft, the Disability Support Group, the Knitting Circle and the Saturday Club are safe environments where people can socialize. By linking with others, maintaining a positive attitude and a good sense of humour we can together face lifechanging challenges.
