Whaingaroa Raglan Surf Managment Plan

The Whaingaroa Raglan Surf Management Committee are crowdfunding for new signs to be created.

The Whaingaroa Raglan Surf Management Committee formed in July last year have put together a set of rules to help locals and newcomers ride the waves safely. Raglan Surf Co owner Luke Hughes, Solscape’s Phil McCabe, Surf Safe head coach and owner Stephen Freeman, Indis café owner and surf coach Miles Ratima and Maioha Kelly have spearheaded the sign design and message, and are now looking for funding for the $10,000 graffitiproof signs. Luke says the thrust of the signs is to get surfers riding the waves in the areas that best suit their skill set and educating them on the unofficial rules of surfing. “There’s so many more people out here surfing now that it’s starting to become an unsafe environment.” Recent media attention around a surf rage incident reported to Raglan Notice Board’s Facebook page has emphasised the frustrations of locals. The surfing incident left an experienced overseas surfer with stitches under his right arm after a resident collided with him during a morning surf. The committee believe installing the signs are proof the local surf community want to take a proactive approach to the issue of overcrowding in the surf. The surf rules outlined on the signs are universal and Luke says no matter where the surf tourist is from the same rules apply. The signs use these rules with accompanying visuals and also match

the surfers level of mastery with the location. Beginners are advised to surf the Ngaranui Beach breaks and take surf school lessons while the Raglan point breaks are recommended for intermediate to expert level and advises surfers to seek local knowledge. “If you’re told by some of the older respected surfers who helped pioneer surfing in Raglan that you need to get out of the line-up you do as you’re told, but a tourist isn’t going to know who these guys are,” Luke says. “They’re going to think he’s just some grumpy old guy who can’t get a wave.” Luke says the signs will help back up what the local surfers are already trying to get across in sometimes volatile and dangerous situations, and hopes to avoid the heavy-handedness of the old school approach to surf enforcement. “If you surf in Hawai’i you don’t get a second chance - you get told once to go in and you go in.” The group have adapted signs used at Sydney’s Randwick City Council beaches to suit Raglan’s unique surfing environment. Luke firmly believes the signs are an effective way to inform newcomers of Raglan’s surf environment and hopes they will alleviate some of the frustration felt by local surfers. “You can’t tell people what to do but the signs are hopefully there to help people figure out for themselves what they should do.” Plans are now in place to start crowdfunding for the signs and Luke says they are keen to hear from any businesses or individuals wanting to support surfing in Raglan. Tarot Talk

T

his week's card is the Ten of Pentacles.

The Ten of Pentacles is a card that is often associated with financial institutions or family inheritances, trusts etc. It stands for the ultimate in worldly and material success. It is a card of financial protection and secure, solid financial footings. In numerology, ten represents completeness and perfection. The Ten of Pentacles is also concerned with permanence. Change is an unavoidable part of life, but constant change is uncomfortable. We need stability and the chance to enjoy a secure foundation in life. This card can tell us to concentrate on the long-term - work toward a lasting solution. Pentacles are solid, earthy, heavy, not emotional, inspirational or mental. Pentacles are the essence of the earth, and of manifestation in the "real" world. Shopping, eating, gardening, earning and spending money - the things that happen on the material plane that ground us. Combining these two ideals then, one can indeed say that Ten of Pentacles is about reaching that comfortable space where goals have been achieved, rewards attained and we have a time to breathe before we start our next adventure. Tarot readings are available by appointment. Txt Chrissy on 027 6644261

whole troupe of performers have been based there, practising their routines ahead of a summer tour celebrating the 10th anniversary of Raglan’s own Circus Aotearoa.

The 10-strong contingent includes daughter Artemis and son Matthias who’s been based a few years now with the circus in Iceland, while also busking around Europe. Matthias has, this time, brought a friend and fellow performer – an Olympic gymnast – with him from that Nordic circus, which is close to the Arctic circle. “I’ve come back specially from Iceland where I’ve been working with Cirkus Island,” says the former Raglan Area School student who made it to the semifinals of TV’s ‘New Zealand’s Got Talent’ five years ago with his roller boller balancing act. The now 22 year old reckons he’s dreamt of establishing a connection between the two circuses since his first trip to Iceland in 2014, and at last it’s a reality. Also based recently at his family home on an 18-hectare bush block off Old Mountain Road have been five other circus performers, he says.

“There’s a French guy from Estonia, twin acrobats from Sydney, a Kiwi back for her second tour and another doing his fourth (tour with Circus Aotearoa),” Matthias reels off. They all do the choreography together for the show, which kicks off tomorrow in Hamilton and arrives here in Raglan next week for six performances through to Waitangi Day. “First we look at the tricks we have in common,” explains Matthias, who’s been performing since the age of nine. “We get them sorted, add some more then put together a few sequences.” So what specifically can circus-goers expect from this tour, a good six years on since Circus Aotearoa’s big top last appeared in Raglan at the rugby grounds? Well younger sister Arty, as she’s called, is described by Matthias as a “hooping” whizz who manipulates multiple hula hoops on different parts of the body like her neck, knees and arms. And their mother, Irene, has a foot-juggling act while dad, Damian, is ringmaster and clown. Matthias himself – having shed his ‘Alfred the Circus Nerd’ persona of old – still does a roller boller act, and juggles, but together with three other “boys” also does a ‘Toss the Girl’ act.

“We throw two girls around between us and it’s a lotta fun,” he laughs. “ I honestly think it’s my favourite thing to do in the circus.” Billed as “beautiful aerial angels”, the girls are acrobats or flyers who also do hoop and silk routines, performing acrobatics while hanging from a fabric. Matthias will perform with Circus Aotearoa – started by his parents back in 2008 when they bought up all the gear including the big top from Whirling Brothers’ Circus – all this season before returning later in the year to his home and girlfriend in Iceland. He says summertime there is great but in winter it’s awful – “dark for 24 hours, icy, cold, snowy, windy.” That’s when “we train”, he adds. “And sleep.” *See the show at the rugby grounds from Saturday Feb 3 to Tuesday Feb 6. Book online at www.circusaotearoa.co.nz. *To go in the draw for a complimentary ‘Two For One’ ticket just email info@ raglanchronicle.co.nz with your name, contact number and ‘Circus Aotearoa’ in the subject line. A column connecting with senior citizens in our community.

January newsletter T he Raglan Community House is open after the Christmas Holiday, and the Opportunity Shop (originally the Bargain Basemen) is now up and running in its new location on the street level.

Six Basic Cooking Classes start on Tuesday 23 January by Colin Chung. Tuesday and Thursday evenings 6pm9pm. Contact the Raglan Community House for Details( 8258142). The Community Trust Van is now available for health related appointments. Please ring 825 8142 the week before to organise a time. Thank you to the Lions who took several elderly people over to Hamilton during the Summer break. The Senior Technology had its first meeting of the year on Thursday, and we worked on the 2018 Senior Directory, which has been updated with details of established groups as well the recently formed Saturday Group and the Sunday Crop Swap. The directory also contains a list of voluntary groups which care for

the community and the environment . Raglan Naturally is one of the volunteer groups added to the list. Raglan Naturally was established in 2001 as a shared vision and guide for Raglans future. It deals with topics like families, community health, culture, education, economy, environment, infrastructure, etc. Those who shared the original concept have seen great progress in the way we care for our beautiful town and surrounding district. However, there is still room for improvement and more awareness of what is needed in the future. Over the next 12 months the plan is being reviewed and updated with an opportunity for everyone to get involved and share their ideas and dreams. All members of the community are important, especially when it comes to those that are more vulnerable. An ageing population will challenge New Zealand's ability to grow economically and it is important to plan for the future so that we are all looked after in our old age. Many older people with disabilities

will increase over the coming years, and social isolation and elder abuse are likely to continue to be major issues. Material hardship for some elderly people is expected to rise, and in the coming decades we will rely more heavily on seniors to care for less abled family members in their own homes. Many of the groups established last century were started and run by 50 and 60 year olds. Today they are managed by volunteers in their 70s and 80s who don’t always have the technical knowledge to cope with social media such as the internet and facebook. The Raglan House has many support services including Senior Technology. Regular articles in the Chronicle have been invaluable in keeping senior citizens informed as to what is happening in their community. Raglan Senior Directory 2018 is available free from the Raglan House informing the elderly about clubs and services. Pauline Abrahams

A

fter last year’s sellout festival where heavy rain and winds pelted festivalgoers, Soundsplash 2018 started off with a bit of rain on Friday which then cleared up on Saturday to turn out what felt like one of the hottest days of the summer so far.

Acts included the likes of reggae fusion band Ocean Alley, Australian electronic music duo SlumberJack, kiwi favourites Shapeshifter, Maori Metallers Alien Weaponry and street busker turned recording artist Dub FX. Friday saw crowds arriving with traffic congestion leading up to Wainui Reserve from early morning as organisers processed campers and vehicles. With shuttle systems implemented for this year’s event, which meant that cars that did not have parking passes would park at the airfield and be shuttled to the venue, most of the congestion was cleared by Friday afternoon. “One of the pains are packing the attendees in on the Friday, apart from that and traffic I thought it was overall a great vibe, “The highlights for me were the local artists all firing and stepping up when required,” said organiser Brian Ruawai.

"This year we improved on the layout and implemented feedback from 2017. “There’s always going to be ways to improve, however overall changes I’m happy with. I thought the vibe was awesome.” Said Brian. While the festival is an all-ages event, people young and old were in attendance. Festivalgoer Loretta Lorimer, 23, visiting from Hawkes Bay said, “seeing DUB FX live was the absolute highlight of my entire life!” The event had a big team of volunteers on hand as well as the team from Xtreme Zero Waste (XZW) managing the rubbish side of things. “We finished packing up on Monday afternoon, a good days’ worth of clean up. Camp ground clean up finished at about 8.30pm, there were loads of rubbish left by campers but it was a lot cleaner this year, only around 10 tents left, as the weather was nice,” said XZW education officer Nenya Chapman. “Special thanks to Lisa Thomson and Mike Edmonds from the WDC and Naomi for helping.” With a huge amount of community involvement, from businesses, performers and volunteers, Brian said, “There were some real rock stars on our local crew and without their dedication and enthusiasm the smooth operation just wouldn’t have been possible.”

Connor McCabe from Fortunes.

What WEC’s up to in 2018

Energy is building here at the Whaingaroa Environment Centre and we’re looking forward to connecting with you this year! Let’s create an environmentally sustainable, healthy and resilient Whaingaroa together. Come by our centre in the Raglan Town Hall on Wednesday – Fridays (12pm – 4pm) or Saturday mornings (10am – 12pm) to volunteer with us, find out more about our projects or just have a chat about environmental issues. We’d love to see you! Our projects include: * Maui Dolphin Conservation: This year Maui Dolphin Day will be held on the 3rd of March – this will come around quick, but there’s still time to get up to Xtreme to pick up recycled materials & start creating your raft! * Plastic Free July and Plastic Bag Free Raglan: WEC is a partner in the PBFR project and is thrilled to see less plastic bags on our streets! Keep an eye out for events and tips on how to go plastic-free in July * Timebank Raglan: provides a way to share skills, get things done and help our community, without needing any money. Timebanks value all people equally – an hour is worth an hour, regardless of the age, gender or educational background of the person. Get involved! * Backyard Bounty: is the encouragement and celebration of the food grown in our community. We want to see locally grown food everywhere! This project has lots of branches including - Seed Bank: WEC sell seeds in affordable quantities, varieties which grow well in Raglan and can be saved. Long term the seedbank aims to hold and share locally saved seeds – please contact us if you’d like to become part of the Seedbank. - Tool Library: this year we’re updating the tool library with more shiny tools to borrow (e.g. weed wacker, wheel barrow, forks and spades). Come down to borrow tools for your garden project. - Junior Enviroclub: our amazing educator will be working with students from Waitetuna and Te Uku Schools again this year: growing people who can grow food! - Crop Swap Raglan: connect with this group to share the abundance of homegrown or homemade goods once a fortnight. - Community Gardens: on Wii Neera street are flourishing! Join us to grow food together, learn from one another and connect with other awesome locals.

Reminders:

- Next Crop Swap will be held on Sunday 4th Feb at the Raglan Bowling Club from 9.30am - Whaingaroa Community Gardens next working bee will be on Tuesday 30th Jan from 8.30am - Let’s show our lovely summer visitors how proud we are to be plastic bag free here!
