More crews than ever before in its 18year history competed on the water at last Saturday’s Whaingaroa Hoe Regatta to make for a hugely successful event, says race director Amber Hartstone, although the death of a local competitor brought the day to a sad end. The 80 crews – made up of 500odd paddlers – came from all over the North Island but the event also this year attracted a record number of local entries, with one of the Whaingaroa Whanau Hoe Waka crews placing second in the novice women’s division. !"#$ %&#'$ ($ )***+,-#$ ,-#.$ ($ /-01"#2$ less than a minute behind their rivals from Napier, recording 44m 16s against the winners’ 43:34 in the eightkilometre race up harbour. “Our novices did really well,” Amber told the Chronicle, adding that some had been paddling barely three months. Calgary, Canada, in August. “Hosting the junior and novice divisions make for a really wellrounded event and a family day,” says Amber. The Whaingaroa club was in fact founded by members of a junior women’s crew who in 1995 won the world champs in Samoa. The local club also entered both a men’s and women’s team in the gruelling 24km “ironperson” course up to Sugarloaf, with the women’s crew – ‘Roofracks’ – only 12 minutes adrift of the 1hr 58m winning time of ‘Team Ahurei’ of the Manukau Outriggers club. With their victory the Auckland crew also took the hotly contested Chrissy Herbert Memorial Trophy. The ‘Roofracks’ began as novices only last year. While having seven crews compete this year was an achievement in itself for Whaingaroa club, it’s “upholding the mana of the race” that takes top priority, says Amber. And hosting outoftown visitors is a big part of that, with the traditional feast before prizegiving this year held at Kopua <,64$&6;=$>,&$4"#$/&14$40;#+ Having such a central facility meant more visitors stayed on to enjoy the celebration at the end of the day, Amber adds. The event’s also seen as good for the town, with cafes and accommodation providers kept busy and the Wahinemoe cruise boat offering prime viewing from the water for the second successive year. Whaingaroa Hoe Regatta is now the second biggest waka event in the country after the National Sprint Championships held at Lake Karapiro every January.

Tangi for Piripi Kereopa A tangi was held this week at Poihakena Marae for widely respected local identity Piripi Kereopa, who suffered a fatal heart attack while competing in the Whaingaroa Hoe Regatta on Saturday.

Mr Kereopa, who lived at Manu Bay, was the husband of Rangi and father of six children – Dennis, Aaron, Te Mania, Daniel, Turanga and Tare. He was also Koro to 11 grandchildren. He was to be buried at Taraunui in Te Akau.

Midwinter swim brings Raglan to be bigger, snow to the beach Whaingaroa to go The organisers of Raglan’s Mid Winter Swim have a few surprises in store this year, with 7 tonnes of real snow planned to be trucked to Raglan and spread on the sand the extra chill will be the icing on the cake for the annual event. Held close to the winter solstice in the deep cold of winter, the swim will mark its eighth birthday this year and helps to promote and raise funds for the Raglan Coastguard and Surf Life Saving Club. Usually organised by Dave Hanna of Ray White Raglan, this year the event will be run in conjunction with the Raglan Community House as the two major sponsors of the event. The Raglan ward of the Waikato District Council is to get bigger in 2013 for the next local body elections, while the current Whaingaroa ward is to disappear in the proposed review of representation just announced.
New boundaries for Raglan Ward and Community Board
The Raglan ward boundary will move out from Te Uku to include Waitetuna and its surrounding area. The new area representing a poopulation of 4680 people extends from Aotea in the South to the south side of Raglan Harbour. It includes the communities of Okete, Te Uku, Te Hutewai, Te Mata, Ruapuke, Te Papatapu, Makomako, Aramiro, Whaanga Coast and Ranui as well as Raglan. On the North side of Raglan Harbour, Te Akau, Port Waikato and Waerenga have been added on to Onewheoro to form one of the longest wards, about 70km from North to South. This means
that the old Whaingaroa ward is gone, swallowed up by Raglan, Newcastle and Onewheoro. While the draft WDC Long Term Plan was based on stale information from the last census, WDC has used updated 2011 information from Statistics NZ in planning these new boundaries. The Raglan Community Board area is also set to expand to include Ruapuke, Te Uku and Te Mata. The total area covered will be Raglan, Whale Bay, Three Streams, Te Hutewai and parts of Te Mata, Te Uku and Ruapuke. Rodger Gallagher
