But  while  Century  21,  which  has  been  around  in  Raglan  for  22  years,  is  sending  its  staff  down  the  road  it’s  only  to  bigger,  brighter  premises  that  will  operate  under  the  L  J  Hooker  banner. As  a  spokesman  for  the  real  estate  agency  branch  told  the  Chronicle  â€œeverything’s  the  sameâ€?  except  for  its  new  location  and  new  name. LJ  Hooker,  an  Australian-based  real  estate  master  franchise  operation  may  have  a  smaller  global  presence  than  American  real  estate  giants  Century  21  but  Kyle  Leuthart  and  the  rest  of  the  old  Century  21  team  were  in  a  positive  mood  this  week  and  looking  forward  to  â€œutilisingâ€?  their  extra  space.

Yoga on paddleboards an exercise in balance There  must  be  all  sorts  of  ways  Raglanites  start  their  day,  from  a  cup  of  tea  or  coffee  to  a  â€œdawnieâ€?  surf,  but  yoga  on  a  paddleboard  has  to  rank  as  among  the  most  unusual.  Indeed,  when  I  was  invited  by  local  venture  Raglan  Paddleboard  to  join  in  a  session  last  Friday  morning  I  naively  thought  we’d  be  doing  a  few  yoga  poses  ashore  before  going  for  a  brief  paddleboard  in  the  harbour.    But  no,  as  others  I  talked  to  rightly  suspected  this  was  a  combination  of  the  increasingly  popular  water  sport  and  the  ancient  discipline  â€“  and  the  fact  I’ve  rarely  done  yoga  and  never  stand  up  paddleboarding  (SUP)  made  me  nervous  I’d  topple  into  the  water  or  some  way  else  make  a  prat  of  myself. But  there’s  safety  in  numbers,  so  they  say,  and  eight  of  us  â€“  all  women  â€“  set  out  into  the  thankfully  still  waters  of  the  estuary  from  Kopua  boat  ramp  at  7am.   I  hoped  onlookers  didn’t  notice  I  was  the  only  one  paddling  on  my  knees.  SUP  yoga  teacher  Laurie  Carpenter  led  the  way  for  this,  the  trial  session.  She  and  Justine  Quarrell  of  Raglan  Paddleboard  had  been  out  there  in  the  estuary  practising  for  the  past  fortnight  and  reckoned  they’d  attracted  a  bit  of  interest.  â€œIt’s  new  to  me  as  well,â€?  confessed  Laurie,  who’s  more  familiar  with  having  KHU IHHW ÂżUPO\ RQ WKH JURXQG WHDFKLQJ ERG\ balance  at  Te  Mata  Hall  and  Raglan  Gym  through  a  mix  of  yoga,  tai  chi  and  pilates. Ocean  Beach’s  distinctive  and  much  talked-about  â€œmoon  houseâ€?  has  just  gone  RQ WKH 5DJODQ PDUNHW IRU WKH ÂżUVW WLPH and,  while  vendors  Ray  White  Raglan  Real  Estate  are  tipping  many  people  will  be  â€œbreaking  their  necks  to  have  a  look  at  itâ€?  at  open  days  this  month,  the  leasehold  property’s  expected  to  sell  at  auction  for  a  healthy  rather  than  astronomical  price. The  property  comes  not  only  with  a  colourful  history  involving  an  old  seadog  and  an  ageing  playboy  but  also  with  a  separate  two-bedroom  pad  and  a  three-bay  docking  station  â€“  or  if  you  like,  garage  â€“for  the  moon  buggies. Ray  White  Raglan  principal  Julie  Hanna  expects  that  with  a  little  maintenance  it  will  make  either  a  â€œquirky  beach  houseâ€?  or  great  holiday  accommodation.   â€œIt’s  one  of  a  kind,â€?  she  says  of  the  â€œmoon  houseâ€?,  which  featured  in  the  2008  Wintec-published  book  â€˜Baches  of  Raglan’.  Julie’s  tipping  there  will  be  a  â€œhuge  turnoutâ€?  at  the  open  days  and  the  on-site  auction,  and  says  there’s  even  a  Futura  club  whose  members  are  interested  in  viewing  the  property. The  â€œmoon  houseâ€?  and  its  outliers  have  been  put  on  the  market  by  56-year- old  Bill  McKinstry  and  his  Papua  New  Guinean  wife,  who  bought  the  property  two  years  ago  from  longtime  family  friend  Captain  Peter  Farrell.   The  old  ship’s  captain  lived  on  in  his  beloved  spaceship  by  the  sea  until  departing  this  earthly  life  late  last  year  at  the  age  of  83. The  McKinstrys’  friendship  with  Peter  went  back  decades,  to  when  they Â

were  neighbours  in  Whangaparoa  north  of  Auckland.   Peter  was  still  going  to  sea  two  years  on  and  one  off,  but  when  he  retired  in  the  mid  1980s  had  the  â€œmoon  houseâ€?  he’d  found  earlier  in  a  Tauranga  paddock  transported  down  to  leasehold  land  at  Raglan. Over  the  years  the  McKinstrys  became  increasingly  regular  visitors  to  Raglan  and  for  the  last  two  years  they’ve  lived  in  and  renovated  the  bach  behind  the  grounded  spaceship. Bill  and  his  wife  are  selling  because  they  don’t  see  renovating  the  â€œmoon  KRXVH´ DV WKH EHVW ÂżQDQFLDO FRXUVH for  them.   They’re  looking  instead  at  moving  down  country  and  doing  up  properties  in  the  likes  of  Tokoroa.  But  why  would  an  old  seafarer  have  bought  a  spaceship  lookalike  for  a  retirement  home  anyway?   â€œIt’s  like  a  one-bedroom  apartment  and  also  a  little  like  a  captain’s  cabin,  and  that’s  why  I  think  it  appealed  to  Peter,â€?  says  Bill  of  his  late  friend  of  40  years. How  Captain  Peter  Farrell  found  his  spaceship  makes  fascinating  reading  in  the  â€˜Baches  of  Raglan’  book.    Peter  related  how  in  the  1970s  he  was  in  command  of  a  ship  on  a  voyage  from  India  to  New  Zealand,  and  on  board  there  was  a  Playboy  magazine  with  an  article  about  Hugh  Hefner  and  â€œhe  had  one  of  these  domed  housesâ€?.  After  the  Jelunga  berthed  at  Tauranga,  Peter  wrote,  a  couple  of  his  juniors  happened  on  a  house  like  Hefner’s  in  a  paddock.   â€œI  went  and  saw  it  and  bought  it  on  the  spot,â€?  he  said.  â€œI  fell  in  love  with  it,  especially  since  it  gave  me  something  in  common  with  Hugh  Hefner.â€? Ray  White  Raglan  Real  Estate  will  have  open  homes  at  the  property  every  Saturday  and  Sunday  of  February.  The  property  will  be  auctioned  on  site  on  March  2. Edith  Symes
