Meet with the DJ A series of Q & Aâs with our local DJâs
This week the Chronicle caught up with DJ Jonny Rizla (Jon Berczely). How did you come up with your Marlin Cafe & Grill. Dine in. On the Wharf...........................................825 0010 DJ name? Well I used to be Jonny Rooster, but then a few people mis-heard it as Jonny Rizla, so I went with the flow. Where do you currently practice as a DJ? The Shack. Dine in or Takeaway. 19 Bow Street..................................825 0027 Raglan Community Radio on Fridays 430-6pm Does your particular show have a theme? Mostly reggae, though pretty much anything 70s and earlier. Sometimes The Raglan Club. Dine in or Takeaway. 22-24 Bow Street.................. 825 8278 itâs nice to stick with one artist for half an hour. How did you first get involved with DJing? By accident in Wellington on Te Upoko O Te Ika. A mate of a mate had a reggae show and I was a regular guest DJ for several months Who were some of your influences when you started? In chronological order: Moki, my DJ mate in Welly, Aaron, our indefatigable station manager (big boss man) and local DJs/musicians Jamin-I, Jinja Cat, for their expressive and trademark styles. Oh and the whole Cornerstone Roots crew, they WeatherMap - New Zealand weather forecasts seriously rock. What kinds of music do you like playing? Reggae. Especially heavy bass

roots and rocksteady. But also funk and a smattering of whimsical medleys! What is the best thing about being a DJ? Listening to all my favourite tunes on a great sound system! What is the worst? Well, being a total amateur, some stomach churning moments of pushing all the wrong buttons. But the worst must be having to play the national news about violent crime and political shenanigans - vibe killer! What in your memory has been your best show? I devoted a whole show to Bob Marley once. I was playing âOne Dropâ, and this guy in a tuxedo grinned through the window and shook some serious booty before dashing off to catch up his mates. But any show where people come into the studio to share the vibes is memorable. What song never fails to get you on the dance floor? http://www.weathermap.co.nz/?p=ragla Cornerstone Roots - Mankilla. They played it at Prana Festival this year and my feet barely touched the ground!

Raglan artist eggstatic his work included in cracking fundraiser
R
aglan born artist Sam Mathers gets to see his giant handpainted egg return to Auckland next week from its month-long travels around the country in the Whittakerâs Big Egg Hunt. Meantime its value this week on TradeMe, where most of the 100 fibreglass eggs are being auctioned, rose to $700-odd and Sam was feeling âpretty luckyâ to have been included among top New Zealand artists fundraising for charity by showcasing their original artwork. Itâs âcoolâ, he told the Chronicle from Auckland where heâs lived the past few years and works fulltime as an artist. âI did it because itâs all good promotion,â he added. The event â in which the eggs are hidden for a month throughout Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch in historic,
landmark and public places â is a first for New Zealand but is part of the worldâs BIGGEST egg hunt which originated in London in 2010 to draw people into an Easter fundraising gimmick by locating the giant artworks. All proceeds will raise vital funds for Starship childrenâs hospital. Sam painted his metre-high egg over six or seven days. Entitled âBig Birdsâ, it shows some of the worldâs largest birds â the ostrich, the now-extinct elephant bird and the moa, all of which laid the biggest eggs. The 30-year-old artist, who was schooled in Raglan and gained an art degree at Wintec in Hamilton, used a multi-media technique involving hundreds of layers of paint. He captured the process in 7000 photos taken from the wide-angle lens of his camera set up in his studio, then put the shots together to make a fast-paced video clip of the artistic process. Sam worked his way up in the art world after being influenced by a job with Sothebyâs in England, which saw him handling works by some of the greatest artists who ever lived. On returning home he held his first solo exhibition in Raglan. Another solo

exhibition and commissions followed in Auckland, which in turn led two years ago to a commissioned mural for the New School of Architecture and Design in San Diego. Heâs since exhibited in art shows throughout New Zealand and his art is now sought after by serious art collectors here and overseas. Edith Symes Samâs TradeMe auction closes next Tuesday, April 22.
Simon writes through a looking glass but darkly Stay-at-home Raglan dad Simon Willissonâs preoccupation with the fantasy world has seen him publish his first kidult novel on Amazon this year â and he reckons heâs ready now to launch it on the world, maybe even try it out with some other publishers. âBut I would like to get feedback from Raglanites first,â the 57-year-old first-time author told the Chronicle last week during a coffee break from some relief work heâs doing at the townâs newest childcare centre âLetâs Growâ. Available in electronic media and hard copy through Amazon, âWillieSmak WidderShins in the Wilderness Gardenâ is an Alice-in-Wonderland meets Kafka kind of ârompâ, he explains, in which giant insect characters carry an amazing array of musical instrument weaponry â like the bazookaHorn and the sawn-off aXophone â in a raging battle between good and evil. Central to the plot is WillieSmak WidderShins himself, a giant Weta or âpoet warriorâ whoâs become lost while on his OE and is travelling aimlessly through the dimensions. The 250-page novelâs pure fantasy, Simon admits, written at his Government
Road home in Raglan over the past few years for five-year-old daughter Ember as she grows up and gets to know more about her dad. âThereâs a lot of me â my likes and dislikes â in the script,â says Simon or CyMoon which is the pseudonym heâs published under. And the reason behind writing the novel? âMortality was on my mind at the time and I wanted to leave Ember with something about who her father was that wasnât merely a diary of events but had longevity. âSo hidden between the lines is a very cryptic story of my loves, interests and feelings,â adds Simon. âShe can read it on many different levels as she grows older.â But the story behind the colourful novel that Simonâs produced is more meaningful still, given his wife Renee discovered two years ago their daughter had an insidious eye cancer known as retinoblastoma. Ember lost her eye but the operation she had at Starship Hospital in Auckland saved her life. It gave the couple an insight into the âharrowingâ journey of parents who have children with cancer, and the incredible work of institutions like Starship and Ronald McDonald House for families facing such challenges.
Also at H.G Webb House, Cnr Boundary & Victoria Streets, Hamilton
Simon Willisson
While his wife dealt with the practicalities of the situation, Simonâs response was to write his book. He now wants to give a percentage of the bookâs sales to the Child Cancer Foundation and is hoping âto reach a wider, if not neighbourhood, audienceâ. Go to WillieSmak WidderShins on Facebook to see more on Simonâs book. Edith Symes

The current Kapiti coast district councillor, who called through town while on a familiarisation tour of the vast electorate in which sheâs standing for Labour, agreed with the Chronicle that at best she could only loosen a little Nationalâs stranglehold on the seat. Instead her greatest chance of
promoting the electorateâs interests could be as a list MP, she said, and sheâd know in June if she had been ranked sufficiently high on the Labour list to have a chance of making it into Parliament. If she did end up a list MP, she saw the possibility of her setting up a âbuddy MPâ office in the likes of Te Awamutu in the same way as list MP and Labour chief whip Sue Moroney works as a âbuddy MPâ in the Hamilton West electorate even though itâs officially represented in Parliament by Nationalâs Tim Macindoe. Penny â whoâs been a âsigned-upâ member of the Labour Party for only four years but has worked twice as a parliamentary press secretary, including for then prime minister David Lange â said she was up for any meet-the-candidates
meetings organised locally and would also be bringing various high-profile Labour MPs through town. They included Labour health spokesperson Annette King, and science, environment and climate change spokesperson Moana Mackey. Penny stressed to the Chronicle her interest in seeing âthe erosion of democracy restoredâ, and was concerned for instance that some Raglan seabed mining opponents apparently felt they did not get a fair hearing last week from the Environmental Protection Authority, an organisation that was supposed to be democratic and not âtoeing the Government lineâ. She also had a strong interest in education and if she was ever in a position to promote a private memberâs bill in Parliament it would probably relate to reading recovery programmes. âAny child who needs that help should be getting it,â she said. Mondayâs quick visit was the married mother of twoâs first to Raglan, a town she noted was âleft leaningâ and one that Labour MPs always seemed keen to visit. After interviews with the Chronicle and Raglan Community Radio she was scheduled to have lunch at the Shack with some local Labour Party faithful before she and her rookie campaign manager Dan Armstrong â who is based in Te Awamutu â headed south to Kawhia. She also saw the new wharf where she had been keen to visit Tony Sly Pottery â which has an outlet that she admits frequenting when present-hunting in her hometown of Otaki â but complained Dan and another minder kept her from doing any shopping. A.T The Chronicle will profile the National and Greens candidates for Taranaki-King Country in coming issues.

Whaingaroa Youth Movement performed âHow to change the worldâ at Wainui reserve on Saturday. Once again Patti Mitchley and her girls created a delicious experience with young dancers performing playful, energetic as well as moving pieces against the beauty of
the bush setting. The dancers were clearly enjoying themselves as they performed in colours of the rainbow to uplifting soundtracks that eventually tempted some of those watching to join in. Mitchley had this message for the Chronicle: âWhaingaroa Youth Movement
sends a big thank-you out to our parents and helpers, Eve Veglio-White, the Wainui Bush Park Reserve Committee, Waikato District Council Creative Communities fund, and the Raglan Maori Wardens for traffic management to keep all of our tamariki safe on the road. Thanks for coming and celebrating our dance work with us.â

N
o, some over-zealous bureaucrat hasnât introduced parking meters at Raglan airfield â the 12 pillar box-like structures installed around its south and eastern perimeters recently are actually lights which represent stage two of a $40,000 Raglan Community Board-initiated project to improve community safety in a well-utilised public area.
Stage one â completed last year â involved putting in lighting from Raglan Kopua Holiday Park through to the footbridge. âUnfortunately, soon after installation, we did have a problem with vandalism,â a Waikato District Council spokesperson acknowledged. âHowever this was addressed with a more secure foundation and the use of more durable lighting suitable for the area.â The council says it hasnât experienced any further issues. Smokers out in force over Easter There will be plenty of people smoking their fish around town this weekend. Easter Sunday is the annual âSmokemâ smoked fish competition. The Raglan Club is hosting the event. Entries to be submitted between 3.00pm and 5.30pm on Easter Sunday. Judging starts at 6.00pm sharp. It is free to enter for everyone. One smoked fish per person. Fish must be locally caught and no salmon or trout. It must be personally smoked, with no buy ins. Prizes: 1st overall - $250 cash plus trophy. Best smoked fish by a Raglan Club member is $50 cash, plus trophy. So a Club member could walk away with $300 cash and two trophies. So simply present your smoked fish entry on the day, it will be replated and coded for judging. Remember it is about the smoked product, not the fine china plate you bring it in on. When the judging starts they will be commenting on taste, colour and smell. They will, after tasting, go into recess with the plated fish they have chosen, do a final elimination and the winner will be announced. Their decision will be final. The trophies and prizes will then be presented. Afterwards some fish will be donated to our Trust Hospital and IHC house. The rest will be available for competitors to sample.
Last year we had smoked, stingray, eel, mullet, flounder, snapper, trevally, kahawai with flavours of chilies, pickles, garlic, curries, every known herb, and sweeteners brown sugar, golden syrup, molasses, maple syrup you name it and we had it, even a blackened fish that had gone terribly wrong. 58 entries in 2013! If you have that winning formula you need to be in. A small amount of frozen fish is available, if you contact our bar staff prior to Saturday the 19th. During the judging we will demonstrate the art of filleting a flounder. You will later be given the opportunity of filleting a flounder. These fillets will be separately judged and a prize of a $50 Raglan Club voucher is on offer. This is a Raglan Club Inc Fishing Section event. Contacts. Barry Dalbeth, Joan Oliver and Graham Hubert. Easter Fishing supplementary info: Big tide ranges over this weekend. 3.3m tides. High Tide on Good Friday - 11.49am. Low at 6.01pm. If fishing or boating care needs to be taken because of the extra low water and general amount of water movement (joggle) at the harbour entrance. Plenty of fish are being caught in the 12m to 15m marks up north of Raglan. Many kahawai are in work ups along our coast. Raglan Wharf Seagull
Recently the first-ever âFriends and Neighboursâ Bowling Tournament took place at our local bowling club. The idea, instigated by the bowling clubâs neighbours Mel and Graham, was all about having fun and enjoying the company of others over a game or two of bowls. With no experience needed, twelve teams of triples took part and with serious prize-money at stake, while there was a lot of laughter, everyone was trying hard to be in the running. Teams from Te Mata were placed third and second while the youngest aged team took out top honours and $100 each to boot. At the prize-giving Graham Hannah took the opportunity to say how much he admired
âHookemâ - take a kid fishing
the hard work of the volunteers at the bowing club for making the tournament the success it was and for maintaining a top bowling facility. âIâm in awe of just how much goes on here all the time by the bowling club volunteers. This is an excellent facility and Mel and I often enjoy watching the games played just over our fence.â With the first Friends and Neighbours Tournament now successfully dispatched thereâs every expectation that next yearâs event will be even bigger and better. Herbal Dispensary hosting cookbook launch Kindy carpentry area complete The Herbal Dispensary takes great pleasure in inviting you to the launch of the cookbook âMy Darling Lemon Thymeâ by Raglan expat Emma Galloway. My Darling Lemon Thyme is about real, honest food, seasonal and simply prepared, whole and unadulterated, fresh from the earth to the kitchen. While it is perfect for anyone with food intolerances, it is also guaranteed to please everyone who loves great food. Catch Emma talking about here journey and the origin of the book at 3.30pm or simply stop by afterwards for a chat and a signed copy of the book. If you would like a signed copy of her book and donât want to miss out please give us call us on 825 7444 to reserve a copy. 26th April from 3-5pm at the Herbal Dispensary 6 Wallis Street, Raglan. Ph (07) 825 7444 to RSVP.
Raglan Kindergarten have been striving to raise funds for our new carpentry area. It started with our annual HÄngi last year, which raised $1,200, and finished with our food stall at the Mauiâs Dolphin Day. We sold sausages and bread, mussel fritters, baking, and cold drinks, there was something for everyone. We also entered a raft in the recycled raft

race, which achieved its own minor victory by crossing the finish line in one piece. We managed to raise $700 that day, and with that we purchased a new tool cabinet loaded with new equipment, a new wood box, and a new work bench. Thanks to all those who helped and donated with our fundraisers, the rowers in the raft race, and our community who continue to support us. Raglan Kindergarten Team
Emma Galloway There are shelves upon shelves in bookstores filled with interesting looking and delicious sounding cookbooks, that upon closer inspection leave me sorely disappointed with impractical and improbable recipes or very few photographs to whet the appetite. We primarily eat with our eyes, followed by our noses and then finally our mouths, so when a book is page after page of sumptuous photographs of incredibly delicious looking recipes, such as Emma Gallowayâs book My Darling Lemon Thyme, then I am definitely hooked. This book has evolved from Emmaâs very successful food blog of the same name which she has been writing for the past 4 years as part of her and her families transition into gluten free eating. Being raised vegetarian the transition was one of translating what she knew into healthier alternatives, yet although gluten free and vegetarian being the key elements in this book, I think it will have a broad appeal simply for the way in which the recipes are written and presented, making it appealing to anyone interested in flavoursome food. Emmaâs approach is a fresh twist on the familiar.
There are a lot of old classic kiwi and vegetarian recipes revisited such as Anzac biscuits made with quinoa and lemon, golden pavlova with whipped coconut cream and mango, crepes made with quinoa flour and served with orange maple sauce; or tabbouleh using buckwheat instead of bulgar wheat - a nutty seed that enhances the dish rather than detracting from the original. And for all you vegans out there feeling like you are missing out on a true kiwi classic: âdairy freeâ hokey pokey ice cream. The breakfast selection is broad and interesting with many tasty ways to start the day. Iâve tested a few recipes and they do work - my favourite would have to be the raw chocolate avocado tart - with these two ingredients as the main components, how can you go wrong? Emmaâs introduction and description of all the ingredients used in the recipes that follow are simple and well informed giving the reader all the information they need to set forth into a world of new flavours. Itâs a beautiful book that would be a great addition to any kitchen for many meals and years to come. Cheryl Beere - Chef and Author of âThe Atomic Cafe Cookbook.â

Bridge to Bridge harbour swim draws plenty
Wednesday 30 April 2014 Waikato District Council Draft Annual Plan 2014 - 2015 Long Term Plan â Year Three
It was a stunning Raglan morning and the 3.3m tide with a mirror finish helped us provide the perfect swimming conditions for over 100 participants. Over half the entrants were Raglan based. This is a huge increase from last year and the club is pleased that our target audience, Raglan and the wider community, âare getting into the swim of thingsâ. Swim distances of 200 metres to 2 kilometres saw our youngest registrant of 6yrs to the eldest, 70yrs, giving it a go. This is our annual fundraiser, a bright idea devised over the neighbours fence one afternoon, while trying to figure out how to raise money to heat the school pool. Two years down the track, we have a fun, fully
engaged volunteer committee, running Coaching and âLearn to Swimâ lessons, squad training, lane swimming, Community group swimming and the Bridge to Bridge. We hope this is a winning formula that will sustain our club and members in the years to come. With help from community grants and this fundraiser weâve bought thermal pool covers and we are pretty sure we will have that new pool liner installed for the upcoming season â November 2014. A decline in MOE Operational grants has seen the closure of many school pools, so our thanks go to the School Board of Trustees, allowing our club to open the pool to the community, teaching everyone to swim, have fun, be healthy and be safe in the water. Please see our website http://www.sportsground. co.nz/raglanswimclub or FB page for results and sponsor lists. H Rossi

YOT Club open for Easter
Councillorâs Column Itâs been a busy time at Council since the year began and shortly there will be the annual r o u n d of community meetings on the proposed Draft Annual plan 2014 â 2015 and year three of the Long term plan. The venue for this yearâs meeting is the Raglan Bowling Club, Wednesday 30th April, 7-8pm. This will be an opportunity to hear and have a say on the proposed plan. This year Council has been able to include a number of requests that have come from Community Boards around the District, this includes the completion of the footpath in Simons Road and further funds for footpaths across the District. The plan also includes a reduction of the General rate increase as proposed in the Long Term Plan from 2.55% to 1.98% although the targeted rates increases as proposed in the LTP remain. The proposed upgrade of James St has been discussed with Residents by way of a roadside meeting and rather than rush the job before winter the residents preferred to wait and do the whole job at the start of next summer. Many thanks to those who participated in the discussion. As I mentioned in my last column
Creative Communities International had been engaged by the Council to facilitate the development of what is described as a co-created Place. David Engwicht held a one-day workshop on the 22nd February after previously visiting Raglan last year which generated a lot of interest and Media coverage. At the workshop there were a number of areas to which this process could apply, including the entrance to the Main St, Waterfront, Lower Bow St and the Library and Memorial Area. The Workshop determined that a Town Square at the intersection of Bow St and Wainui Rd was their priority with other places to follow. This is an ambitious project that has necessitated the investigation of appropriate traffic management and the ability to trial any changes. This project will be Co-ordinated By David working with Gillian Cox who was appointed project leader by the Workshop. This project is about creating some interesting spaces by the community for the community. Councils across the region are looking at ways to work together and collaborate on improving asset management of roads, improving procurement practices and the delivery of maintenance, renewals and operations. This is in response to changes to the Local Government Act. Councils are also working to develop a spatial plan across the
region to meet the challenges of delivering efficient infrastructure in priority areas and a better coordinated approach to central Government, this also includes by-laws and the development of sports facilities for our changing communities. Council has also recently implemented a heritage policy and strategy to work with ratepayers to protect our valuable heritage in the district - please visit the Council website to view). Finally there have been 120 submissions to the proposed Private plan change for the Rangitahi Peninsula - of these 41 are in support, 17 are neutral and 63 are in opposition. It is anticipated that the period of further submissions will commence towards the end of April for a period of ten working days. The hearing has been set down for the week of the 4th August and will be heard by two independent commissioners Phil Mitchell and Alan Watson who will provide a recommendation to Council. Remember that all Council agendas and minutes are on www. waikatodistrict.co.nz. If you would like to discuss council issues with me please contact me through the council office on 8258129 or my mobile 0211553778 or email me clint.baddeley@waidc. govt.nz Regards Clint Baddeley District Councillor.
