Recent resident Juan Duazo reckons Raglan’s got a lot going on and since moving here seven months ago, has been busy capturing the great things that happen in our little town. His recent project involved working with local reggae band Cornerstone Roots on the video for their new single ‘Journey,’ following Reiki Ruawai’s journey from land to sea through the Raglan township. !"#$%& $%& '#(& )*%'& +,%$-& .$/(0& '#1'& 23.(& %#0'4& (%5(-$1667& 1'& this level, Cornerstone Roots are a big band, so it’s been a great experience,” says Juan. Juan lives in Raglan with his partner Jocelyn and two kids Vasse and Nyjah. He had known about Raglan through the movie 89:/6(%%&;,++(*3&1:/&<*0+&%,*):=&>1-?&#0+(&$:&'#(&@#$66$5$:(%A B(& *(-166%& '(66$:=& #$%& 51*':(*& '0& ):/& 1& 561-(& -60%(& '0& C1=61:& D#(:&+0.$:=&0.(*&%0&#(&D0,6/:3'&>(&<1*&<*0+&'#(&%,*<4&!2&/$/:3'& '#$:?&D(3/&>(&%0&6,-?7&'#1'&%#(&D0,6/&):/&1&E0>&$:&C1=61:4F&%17%& Juan. For Juan, making videos started with his passion for downhill longboading. He had been involved with an environmental organization helping make videos of ‘the usual,’ stuff ­ birds and nature.

“When you’re shooting the same '#$:=%4& 2& '#$:?& 5(056(& =('& ,%(/& '0& '#(& message, you know it’s like how do you get people to really sit down and listen about something,” he says. Soon after, Juan started making videos that focused on the youth, %?1'(>01*/$:=&1:/&%,*):=&-,6',*(A !2& =,(%%& ,%$:=& %?1'(>01*/$:=& 1%& 1:& (G1+56(4& $:& '#(& @#$6$55$:(%4& ?$/%& skate and hang out in car parks because there’s nowhere else to go. Taking them out longboarding, you take them out of the city into the hills and they reconnect with nature again.” Says Juan. He says that for a lot of the kids >1-?& $:& '#(& @#$66$5$:(%4& %50*'%& 6$?(& longboarding are a way for youth to get out of a life of drugs and crime. “These kids were doing 30km push races (on longboards) and still smoking. 2:& '#($*& #(1/%& $'& D1%& '#(& 8-0063& '#$:=& to smoke so we challenged them, how do you be cool without doing what everyone else thinks is cool? Now they think it’s uncool to smoke.” "#(& %?1'$:=& 1:/& %,*):=& .$/(0%4& present a different perspective about nature, and this is what he hopes to achieve making videos about Raglan. “Sometimes people don’t know about things happening in Raglan but if you have your own media and produce a video, it can go viral and really promote what you’re trying to do – you don’t need a big production crew, “ says Juan. As one of New Zealand’s heavyweight musicians Hollie has toured internationally with her music, and she has opened for prestigious acts such as Bob Dylan, Coldplay and Simply Red. With only four other dates in Whangarei, Kumeu, Auckland and Wellington, it’s good to know that Raglan is considered a hot spot amongst established musicians. The acoustic sound was really complimentary to Hollie’s spine­tingling voice which had everyone mesmerised. Only a live performance can do justice to the power and control of her voice. Hollie and her guitarist had a great chemistry on stage and chose a strong set which ended with her chart­topping 2006 single ‘Bathe in the River’ which of course everyone sang along to. He suggested a small secondhand bus or taxi minibus run from Glentui Lane (near Whatawhata) to Hamilton where, on average, 10 people waited every morning. It was a “band aid” solution, he admitted, but other possibilities could be looked at later. Regional councillor Paula Southgate agreed the temporary solution could work

with joint Waikato District Council funding, while district councillor Noel Smith !"#$%&'()*)+&*,,)*&"-#.)"/)&"#'0)1*+) available. He suggested however that a special rate might be needed and questioned why people elsewhere in the Waikato district should have to stump up for Raglan buses – to which commuter and council watchdog John Lawson pointed out that Raglan people pay for roads throughout the district. And another local, Nadine Johnston, presented a petition signed by more than 200 people to the regional council demanding urgent changes to a service fraught with a raft of health and safety issues including the overloading. Ms Southgate assured her agitated audience the council was taking residents’ concerns very seriously, and promised to “take on board” the safety/storage issues and unreliability of routes they complained of. It was not just a Raglan problem, she said, and councillors were actively looking for a longterm solution by working with the Ministry of Education and New Zealand Transport Agency. Three possible solutions were being investigated, including using a small van during the school term to carry between 10 to 15 passengers at a cost of about $70,000 a year. Other options were to use an older,

larger bus to transport up to 45 passengers at a cost of $115,000 a year or to tweak departure times of the weekday buses which would alleviate backpacker/student clashes in the afternoons. The cost of such options would have to be recovered from the Raglan community either through a targeted rate and/or increased fares, the WRC insisted. Ward councillor Clint Baddeley – who chaired the hour­and­a­half long Wednesday night meeting – said it was clear now the problem would not just go away, and it was time too to investigate some of Dave Brown’s options. Maori wards will not be introduced by the Waikato District Council following a poll on whether or not to introduce Maaori wards which closed at noon last week. The results of the Maori representation poll are: FOR the establishment of Maori Wards: 2,520 AGAINST the establishment of Maori Wards: 10,113 Voter turnout was 30.2 per cent (or 12,677 electors from 42,017 electors) and 8 informal votes and 36 blank votes were received. The outcome of the poll is binding on the Waikato District Council for the next two triennial elections (2013, 2016). As Maori wards are not being introduced, the council will now complete its representation arrangements review to determine the number of councillors, and the number and names of wards required for the 2013 triennial elections. This process is expected to be completed by August 2012.
