‘Scary’ sights as mini-tornado scythes through Raglan West A chimney toppled, a barbecue landed on a rooftop and a vacant caravan was turned on its side when a mini-tornado ripped through Raglan West about noon last Sunday, leaving residents shaken but relieved the next day that nobody was hurt by the twister.

“We can laugh about it now,” said Sheryl Rangiawha who co-owns Palm Beach Motel with husband Don, “but we copped quite a bit (too).” She told the Chronicle their large steel-framed pergola was shunted across the front lawn and snapped nine yuccas before being picked up and smashing through fencing and decking at their house and then through the window of an adjacent motel unit. A big pohutakawa tree edging the inner harbour was also uprooted, three picnic tables “levelled” and outdoor umbrellas smashed. “It was pretty scary watching it all happen,” she said. She reckoned the guests were asking tongue-in-cheek on Monday what “excitement” they could expect next. Police said the tornado apparently started in Goodare Road – a small lane off Opotoru Road – where it flipped a caravan on its side before ripping through the grounds of the motel up the way and travelling across Wainui Road to Tahuna Avenue. That’s where resident Willie Barlow, who’d been listening to music on his headphones while his six-year-old grandson watched telly, reckons all hell broke loose. “There was a crash and everything started to happen simultaneously … what chaos!” In all his 70 years he’d never heard anything like it, he said. The chimney of his house toppled, panels were torn from the side of his garage, his ‘lullaby’ swing flew past the window “at a zillion miles per hour”, another window blew out and a tree on his front lawn was ripped apart by the force. “I didn’t know what the hell was happening!” The tornado then blew over a greenhouse next door, police said, and around the corner in Taipari Avenue a tree fell on a car while its owner was attending a service at Raglan Community Church. The car had its back window smashed but was able to be driven away after a nearby resident, builder Gordon Jowsey, cut the tree away. Close by on Nihinihi Avenue a barbecue with its gas bottle attached was picked up in the whirlwind and dumped high on a roof. The twister left a “path of debris” from road cones, fencing and branches to recycling bins and their contents, police reported. Raglan Fire Service deputy chief Frank Turner told the Chronicle both fire trucks were on the job dealing with the flipped caravan, fallen trees and the barbecue which had taken flight. “One call became three,” he said. But the firefighters didn’t have far to go, he added, as they were all downtown at the fire station anyway doing a refresher first aid course. The twister is not a first for Raglan as Frank, a fire service veteran, recalls another some years ago at Lorenzen Bay. Police confirmed they’d had no reports of any injuries from Sunday’s tornado. They say every picture tells a story and these leather jandals made by Raglan’s Soul Shoes, and modelled here by size 6 Marie de Jong, tell a whopper of one. The story began when a teen by the name of Shaquille Ioane, from the central North Island timber town of Kawerau, featured on “Campbell Live” recently over his difficulty in getting any rugby boots or other footwear that fitted – a plight not altogether surprising considering he’s a size 17 or 18. While others took care of the boots issue for the Kawerau College first XV player, Soul Shoes’ Ben

A size 17 jandal offers plenty of room for growth for Marie de Jong, who’s a size 6 Galloway – the artisan cobbler son of Rob Galloway, who owns Soul Shoes with partner Marie – got in touch with the aptly named Shaq and said he could do him some jandals to fit. “We didn’t hear back for a while but then we got an order,” says Rob. “The measurements were so big we sent back a note asking are you sure?” Once they got confirmation Soul

Shoes immediately set about cobbling together what Rob confirms are ”the biggest pair of jandals we’ve ever made”, and modelled them for a Chronicle photo before despatching them south. “Hopefully he [Shaq] is happy,” says Rob. “Usually if we don’t hear back it’s all good.” Edith Symes

Pilates classes have started in Raglan this week. Whaingaroa Physiotherapy is proud to finally be able to reintroduce these classes which proved enormously popular and successful in the past. Jenny Watts The classes will be led by Jenny Watts who has completed her renowned STOTT Pilates instructor training earlier this year and has been practicing as a qualified physiotherapist for the past 13 years.

Pilates is well known for its success in helping relieve spinal pain and strengthening the core. In fact, Pilates is known to increase performance in other sports too and even help with that tricky pelvic floor. Getting those pre-baby abs back is another benefit, says Jenny who has an eight month old baby herself. But Pilates is not just for women. According to the head STOTT Pilates instructor in New Zealand, the exercises are usually more challenging for men and therefore men should also be attending the classes. Technique is everything, states

Jenny, and that why it is so important to have a properly trained instructor. The classes will be capped to 12 participants to allow Jenny to correct and modify the exercises for individual needs. Two classes per week will be held on Monday mornings at 9.15 and Tuesday evenings at 6.00, with the hope to add more classes as demand allows. The show kicked off with a traditional Fijian crab race and Aaron’s crab appeared to have a ‘cardiac arrest’ and finished dead last. Finishing last meant that Brunet had to face the cooking challenge first and therefore had the least amount of time to prepare. Aaron found a silver lining in the situation. “I won’t have much prep time but I won’t have all day to agonise over what to cook". The top eight faced a test to invent a fresh seafood dish up to the standard of the exclusive resorts cuisine with the possibility of it appearing on the menu. Cooking one at a time, the contestants had one hour to prepare a dish and were overseen by Huka Retreats executive chef, Michel Louws. With his usual finesse Aaron produced two dishes ‘Coral Trout and Barracuda with hot salsa and mild salsa’ as well as’

Mud Crab with ginger, garlic and coconut rice’. The judges said “it’s a knock out”... he’s certainly setting the bar high”. Aaron Brunet G u e s t judge, Huka’s assistant general manager, Rudy Crane summed it up “the Huka retreat would be quite happy to put that in front of a guest". Aaron and fellow competitors Sushil Ravikumar, Ella Krauts and Paula Saengthian-Ngam were named the best chefs of the day. Marae clinic’s new Texan doctor a cheerleader for holistic health A doctor who greets patients and visitors wearing toeless yoga socks which show off red-painted toenails is not exactly the norm – but then Kenna Stephenson from Texas is not quite your average GP either. “How wonderful to [be able to] work barefoot every day,” she said last week when the Chronicle called, a comment which doubled as a gentle reminder to remove shoes at the door as a mark of respect for the town’s newest medical centre based at Poihakena Marae in Raglan West. “It’s so refreshing to be here,” she enthused, “where we begin and end our day with karakia (prayers).” The Raglan Community Medical Centre, as it’s called, is a satellite clinic to Te Kohau Health in Hamilton East where long-serving Raglan GP the late Dr Tom Ellison practised for some years later in life while dreaming of setting up a similar marae-based system for the community he loved. After his death his colleagues and

whanau turned the dream into a reality, and early this month Kenna became the clinic’s first fulltime doctor. While it opened just over a year ago, the clinic’s been run until now on a rotating staff of GPs from the city’s Te Kohau Health centre. Dr Stephenson says she’s delighted to be at the new clinic because as well as fuelling her passion for community health, the philosophy of Te Kohau Health is holistic and “very compatible” with her own personal practice. “I don’t just write scripts and order tests,” she insists. Her interest is in the human being as a whole rather than the person with a disease. And she’s committed to whanau ora or family health – an initiative which is essentially driven by Maori cultural values but is “open for all”. “I’ve seen multiple ethnicities,” explains Dr Stephenson of her few weeks’ work to date. And that’s just the way she likes it. In two decades of practice, she has volunteered in medical missions both in the US and internationally, along with husband Douglas – of Cherokee Indian descent – who now

works as a specialist doctor at Waikato Hospital. The couple’s most recent volunteer work has been in Guatemala and Belize in Central America where they’ve worked on medical and dental missions with indigenous people in extreme conditions. Before that, Arizona’s large native American and Mexican populations presented them “challenges” relating to even basic daily needs. But here in Raglan, says Dr Stephenson, “I’ve got electricity!” Dr Stephenson, a published author on health and medical topics, has been in the country almost 12 months now – working as a locum in Wellington, Bulls, Matamata, Turangi, Te Aroha and even Raglan for a bit late last year. She says she and her husband were at a stage in their careers where they – with teenage daughter Brenna – were ready for a lifestyle change. They’ve settled in Okete Road and Kenna’s finally unpacked her suitcase, she says, although nine boxes shipped from the States are still to come. She’s joined the Union Church in Stewart

Kenna Stephenson Street and the swimming club at the area school, and has tried surfing too. The view from her doctor’s office is of the sea from one window and Mt Karioi from the other. The people and the land are both “fantastic”, says Kenna, and she can’t imagine anything bad at all about the move to Raglan. “We hope to stay for many years.” Edith Symes

Plenty for fisho’s to hook into thanks to Club

Raglan Club’s fishing section is on a real roll at the moment, coming up with all sorts of inventive ways to celebrate the sport of fishing; case in point, the recent ‘Smokem Raglan’ competition, held on Easter Sunday and hot on the heels of the Gals ‘n Gurnard back in January. One of the organisers, Raglan’s ‘Wharf Seagull’ Graham Hubert, says the competition generated a not-unexpected amount of interest. “People are very passionate about their way of smoking their fish. Many entries were from people who no longer can fish, but the Fishing Section made available fish so these people could enter. The icing on the cake was the number of entries, along with the quality and the colour of the plated smoked fish entered”, explains Graham.

Four judges took up the challenge, trying all 58 entries in the blind-tasting competition held at the Raglan Club. Renowned Raglan chef Colin Chung was joined by Ray White’s Julie Hanna, who also acted as MC for the night as well as Councillor Clint Baddeley and local identity Ralph Blanchard. They took their time and responsibilities seriously before declaring the winning entry, a smokedeel entered by Jan Mitchell, a former fisheries scientist, to be quite outstanding. Jan (pictured), with the trophy made from Totara burr, and crafted by Raglan woodworker Bruce Tricklebank, said she was very surprised and delighted to have taken out the award, which included the handsome trophy to keep for the year along with $250 prize-money. She plans to enter again and encourages others to give it a go next time. “We all have our secret recipes, so I’m not going to give too much away except to say I added my special ingredients and smoked the eel all night”, she says with a smile. Bruce started work on the trophy three weeks before competition day. He used part of a large burr he estimates to be about 250 years old from Pureora Forest, west of Lake Taupo. “I used to work in the timber industry and prior to 1987 Pureora Forest was being milled. Burr which grows like a wart on the side of trees where there’s been some injury to the tree, wasn’t considered useful and was left aside, that’s how I came to have the piece I made the trophy from.” When the organisers first discussed the idea of holding the competition they didn’t

Be safe, be seen: Council message Following the conclusion of daylight saving, Waikato District Council is urging cyclists and pedestrians to “be safe, be seen”.

The council’s Road Safety Co-ordinator Megan Jolly said it was important that cyclists and pedestrians ensure they make themselves visible to motorists, especially in poor light conditions such as early morning and from late afternoon onwards. “High visibility clothing is a simple but effective way of being seen in low light conditions. Wear bright clothing during daytime hours and clothing with reflective material for

Cyclists, just like motorists, are legally obliged to display lights during the hours of darkness and during times of poor visibility. Front lights must be white and the rear lights red. It is also recommended that cyclists have the rear light in flashing mode, as this is best for increasing visibility. Ms Jolly hoped that parents of children who cycle to school would invest in a good set of lights. Cyclists are also advised to check that reflectors on the back of their bike are clean and that lights have new batteries.

With the success of Gals ‘n Gurnard and now Smokem Raglan the Raglan Club fishing section is doing its bit to enliven interest in fishing from a wide cross-section of people. The section has meetings on the third Thursday every two months, with entertaining and instructive speakers lined up to share their fishing tips to anyone who wants to come along and listen. Membership of the fishing section is not a prerequisite to attending the evenings. The next meeting is on May 23 at the Raglan Club and the guest speaker will be advertised closer to the time. Raglan Club Anzac Open Day Once again The Raglan Club Inc will open its doors to the community on Anzac Day following the service at the cenotaph in Bow Street. 60th Anniversary of North and South Korea Armistice For some, images of the Korean War extend to not so much more than the fictitious, quite frivolous and iconic programme ‘M.A.S.H’, about a mobile army surgical hospital in South Korea somewhere back then. Unlike the Vietnam War the following decade, with television cameras ‘going along for the ride’, the Korean War (1950-53) seems much more distanced in time and understanding for us. July 27 2013 marks the 60th anniversary of the signing of the armistice which brought fighting between North and South Koreans and their allies to an end, yet their remains, as recently demonstrated by the rhetoric on TV and the images in the media, a tense co-existence, carrying a sense of potential catastrophe.

who served time in Korea will before long become our ‘elder-statesmen veterans’. In 1950 two Korean states existed – the outcome of arrangements for the surrender of Japan in August 1945. Post-1945 led to both Russian and American forces entering the Peninsula, ostensibly to oversee the surrender of Japanese troops, however both powers desired a foothold in what they could see was a strategically significant part of the world. Neither was prepared to see the other there alone, so Russia took over the North, while the United States had the South.

New Zealand was involved in Korea from 1950 to 1957; three years of active hostilities as part of the United Nations police action to push back North Korea’s invasion of the South and then in a garrison role after armistice was settled in July 1953.

In 1948 the UN oversaw founding the Republic of Korea (South). When this happened the Russians reacted by creating the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North), delineated roughly along the 38th parallel. Border incidents were common, as Koreans on each side sought to reunify their nation. (Imagine seeing the North and South Island’s politically drift apart and for this to be imposed by other nations!)

4,700 New Zealanders served in Kayforce contingent, under UN command. A further 1,300 served on the frigates during the war and for another four years following the armistice. 45 New Zealanders lost their lives, 33 of them during direct fighting.

The Korean Peninsula extends some 1,100 km southward - surrounded by the Sea of Japan to the east, the Yellow Sea to the west and the Korea Straits between the two. It’s close to China, Russia and Mongolia and a stones throw from Japan.

Our participation in the Korean War was significant for such a small nation. We were one of the first countries to put our hands up to be involved. Many of those who served are now in their late 70’s and 80’s, and with vets from the Second World War now in their late 80’s and 90’s, those

In June 1950 the North invaded the South reaching and capturing the southern capital of Seoul within days. The United Nations call for an immediate withdrawal was ignored, thus sparking the setting into which New Zealand, along with other allied nations under the UN flag, entered

the conflict. China became involved, supporting the North when the U.N. troops under the leadership of General Douglas MacArthur successfully pushed the invaders back up over the 38th parallel and to within a few kilometres of the Chinese border. Raglan resident and former Raglan RSA President, Andy Millar remembers his own time in Korea during the war. He was called up for duty in the Royal Engineers, part of the British Army in 1951 and then signed up for three years. Andy, who comes from Scotland, served 12 months in Korea on the docks at Pusan, supervising Korean dockers loading and unloading war supply ships from Japan. He remembers a friendly people who withstood appalling conditions. “In Pusan there was a river which often flooded. The locals made homes for themselves out of the boxes used by the army for setting up canteens all over Korea. When the river flooded, these homes would float away and they would have to start all over again.” A few local Koreans working at the port spoke English and one lieutenant in the Korean Army acted as the engineers’ interpreter. “They were quite happy about the U.N. being there, helping push things along. North Korea had all the industries, so in the South conditions and infrastructure were very poor. The main thing was they didn’t like the Japanese because they had been under their heel for decades before the

Japanese surrender”, Andy explains. After Korea, Andy was sent to Egypt, but his connection with Korea remains strong. He is current vice-president of the Korean Veterans group, part of the Hamilton branch of the New Zealand Returned and Services Association. Testament to how well New Zealanders are regarded by Koreans is demonstrated by their connection to Korean Vets to this very day. “The Korean community often cater at our functions and they are keen to retain positive links with us. I think it is because we were part of a significant time in their country's history and development and though it is now nearly 60 years ago, for them it is not a distant memory at all”, says Andy. Powerfully the differences between these sibling nations can be seen by looking at satellite images taken at night over North and South Korea. To the south of the 38th parallel South Korean cities and industries shine into the night sky, while to the north, a vast tract of land disappears from view, hidden under controlled darkness. Happy day when national service acknowledged As a war-baby, Patrick Day arrived from England with his mother on Anzac Day 1946 in what was called the ‘bride ship’ and it wasn’t until he got here that, as a 1 ½ year old he met his father for the first time. His father served in the Royal New Zealand Navy Reserve in the European and Pacific theatres during the Second World War and experienced a meteoric rise through the ranks, going from able-bodied seaman to acting lieutenant commander in the space of four years. “When dad joined the navy he got on motor torpedo boats and it wasn’t long before he ascended the ranks. He went on to amass a glittering array of six medals from his service in the Second World War. I can imagine that it was pretty tough for mum who came from a large family in England to start life in New Zealand”, explains Dr Day. A generation later at the age of 20 and by now a student at Auckland University, Day experienced his own time of connection with service ‘for your country’ when he was called up for national service at Waiouru from September to December 1964. It was a time of transition from large numbers of New Zealand men being conscripted annually into compulsory service to selection based on date of birth. By 1972 national service ceased entirely.

“I had a total of 14 weeks training at Waiouru made up of two seven week phases. The first phase was basic training. We learnt how to march, fire bazookas and grenades. I remember being thrilled when I hit a 44 gallon drum with my bazooka rocket.” Following the first seven weeks he went into the Army Service Corp as a driver and it was during this time that Day passed his HT licence, something that proved useful when he returned to civilian life as a student because it meant he could find work driving trucks during breaks from university. Though unexpected, the time at Waiouru was not arduous. Day had spent five years as a boarder at St Bede’s College in Christchurch, so was used to the demands of systems, expectations and routines. “After boarding school it was a breeze for me to cope with the 14 weeks training and I certainly did it properly while I was there”, he explains. Following the initial training Day was called up for three weeks a year for the next three years during January which meant it didn’t interfere with university studies. He drove trucks transporting fellow National Servicemen around at a time when the Vietnam War was the global context. Recently Day learnt he is eligible to

apply for a new medal, released by the New Zealand Defence Force, the NZ Defence Services Medal. The medal is being issued to personnel who served for three years or more since the end of the Second World War, including those who did compulsory military training or national service and who fulfilled their obligations. “I’ve discussed this with my brothers and we have all come to the conclusion that Dad would have been highly amused at me getting the medal and that he would also be highly annoyed if I didn’t apply for it”, says Day. Introduction of the new medal was announced by the Prime Minister back in October 2011 and since this time, the New Zealand Defence Force has staggered the application process to cope with the more than 80,000 men and women eligible for the medal who had received no medallic recognition before. Since March this year 39,500 NZDF Service Medals have been issued to exservice men and women while a further 9,500 military personnel still serving in the defence force have received theirs. This is the largest medal issue in New Zealand since 1950-1954 when most Second World War medals were issued and the defence force expects the process will take two to three years to complete. The medal will be engraved with the

recipient’s service number, rank, initials, surname and corps/ service as at qualifying date, engraved on the bottom rim. Keeping to tradition, Patrick Day with his Dr Day plans to be at the newly issued NZ Defence Services Medal Raglan service at 11 am. It’s something he wouldn’t miss and while he acknowledges his time at Waiouru was brief in his life’s journey he also appreciates the fact that by virtue of the quirk of time he found himself born into, he fortunately didn’t have to take his training any further. “I’m deeply respectful of and a great believer in those who have served actively for our country.” Sue Russell Patrick Day received the medal in question just prior to the Chronicle being printed so we were lucky enough to include the image above.

Rates hike takes a back seat to rezoning move News of another rates hike in the offing might usually be just the issue to get Raglan residents riled, but instead most concern at last week’s annual plan consultation meeting at the town hall was over a matter not even up for discussion. Waikato District Council representatives turned up in force to last Thursday night’s meeting, a showing which suggested they expected some flak once chief executive Gavin Ion confirmed in his presentation that under the draft plan Raglan’s residential rates were set to rise by between 5 and 7 percent. But the couple of dozen residents and ratepayers seemed more interested in – and asked most questions about – the private bid to have the Rangitahi Peninsula rezoned from rural so up to 500 houses could be built there over four decades. And frustratingly for the questioners, they were mostly brushed off by council insistence – from Mayor Allan Sanson down – that no application for rezoning had yet been lodged and so nothing was known about the matter. About all residents may have been comforted by were a reassurance that the application with public consultation might easily take four years or more to process, an aside by the mayor that a private plan change was always “a gamble”, and a reminder by Raglan ward councillor Clint Baddeley that he was very keen to hear residents’ views on the issue. Meantime council staff had a relatively easy time of things over the planned rates hikes, to the point that an undertaking to give the meeting an example of how an average-value property in Raglan would be affected seemed to get forgotten about as questions instead ranged across everything from streetlight pollution to notification of illegal sewage discharges. As a result, while it is known that a modest property with a $193,000 CV is set for a 7 percent hike and a property with a CV of around $900,000 a 5 percent rise, few of those at the meeting would have left any the wiser exactly what nasties the

mail may have in store for them come the new rates year starting July 1. It did emerge though that with the proposed rise in the general rate pared back to 1.87 percent, the main reason for the proposed rates hikes for Raglan was that the council was still playing catchup with some of its targeted rates for essential services. The good news – if it can be called that -- is that these hefty wastewater and water rate rises, which the council pointed out were signalled in the long-term plan, are set to tail off the year after next. Council representatives downplayed increasing debt levels, with Mayor Sanson insisting most of that was growthrelated and Mr Ion pointing out most new debt would be offset by developer contributions particularly in the Waikato district’s new northern areas. Raglan Community Board chairman Roger Gallagher found several faults in the council’s presentation, with a hall rate shown as $15 per ratepayer when it should have been $25 and an outdated community board priority list screened in the PowerPoint presentation. Mr Gallagher said a section of footpath on Simon Road should have been one of the three priorities. Things got especially terse when council staff insisted a trade waste fees push being coordinated by Hamilton City Council applied only to industrial businesses despite Mr Gallagher having pointed out they affected even the likes of local kindergartens and the old school arts centre. One big-ticket item mentioned at the meeting was the Whaanga Coast linkup to Raglan’s sewerage scheme, and council watchdog John Lawson asked if there was any truth in rumours the tenders for the work were way over budget. Mr Ion replied he could not yet give a clear answer on that. Mr Lawson also got no joy on another apparent spiralling in costs. “I was surprised none of the 14 [council people present] could answer my basic question about whether the 16 percent rise in payments to staff and suppliers on page 71 of their plan really is as big as it seems,” he said afterwards. Letters To the Editor, It is with a great sadness that I have been watching the Raglan Land Company’s plans for Rangitahi Peninsula unfold. The fact that a single landowner has the potential to impose such an impact on a whole community is disheartening to those of us who value the collectivism that usually makes this town so unique. Whaingaroa/Raglan is known both nationally and internationally as a place where a strong sense of environmentalism pervades the mainstream, and a pride in preserving our character and history (both Maori and Pakeha) is the norm. This private initiative of the Raglan Land Company’s may make many claims that it has huge benefits for the community as a whole, but I would hope we are not so naïve, and realise that the real rewards will only be for a select few. In a setting where past and present dialogue between Tangata Whenua and Pakeha is usually acknowledged as a defining feature of our populace, I find it scandalous that there is no mention of iwi input on the Raglan Land Company’s “consultation” portion of their advertising. I sincerely hope that the rhetoric describing this development as “inevitable” continues to be challenged, and that the truth is revealed- the Rangitahi Peninsula project is unnecessary and unwanted. It started by showing a massive flotilla of

people on water craft coming toward the Raglan footbridge during the Kiwis Against Seabed Mining protest this summer. It showed how the Raglan people were gearing up in a very unified way for a fight against a overseas owned company that is proposing to take sand from the coast on a scale that has never been attempted so far in this world. The second half of the story seemed to be sort of pro mining. The story failed to mention some really important points for Raglan and the west coast; 1. Commercial and recreational fishing could be wiped out. The ocean floor takes years, perhaps decades to build a habitat that attracts life. Snapper are ocean bottom feeders! 2. Our beaches and erosion. They failed to mention just how much sand they are planning to take. If you take sand in that quantity from one area, the sea balances it up by taking sand from somewhere else, we could lose our beach. 3. Surfing. Good waves are formed as ocean swell moves into shallow water. Take away the sand and you can create plunging waves rather the peelers. 5 Maui dolphin. Yes will you have heard about them, only about 55 left. It seems we will, under our watch, see these little dolphins become extinct unless we do everything possible to protect them. I think in this town we love our beaches, our fishing, our surf. The town relies on visitors who come here for our beaches, our fishing and our surf. Local bowlers win shield challenge

A series of Q & A’s with our local artists

This week the Chronicle talks to local visual artist Jodi Collins. Jodi has been known for curating projects involving Raglan artists for Hamilton Fringe Festivals. Image thanks to Tracie Heasman. Briefly describe your practice? I call myself miss popinjay, I work in many mediums clay, acrylic paint, oil paint, spray paint and sometimes watercolour (jack of all trades when it comes to art). I also love to upcycle, finding discarded gems and pimping them up! Tell us about your studio - Hello Art Studios & Gallery It's a collaborative space run by artists, all individually different, with working studios and a shared display space for showcasing and promoting artworks, offering a unique intimate experience to both meet and purchase directly from each artist - no middle man and guaranteed to be New Zealand made plus local! The best piece of advice you ever got? Not sure if it’s the best advise I’ve had but it’s one I remember from my artist friend ‘Zena Elliot’ in Hamilton. She just told me to stick to being an artist and one day it will pay off. Pretty simple but effective, I admire her for her persistence. Favorite traveling experience? Roaming the streets in Hamburg, Germany till the early hours of the morn, taken around by some local people, who showed us the ins and outs of the place, rundown warehouses with dance gigs and hidden away bars. What was your first job? Working at the famous (big) ice cream shop in Pokeno, made Russel Crowe a burger once. I didn’t recognise him but a friend dared me to get his autograph. Are you a dog or cat person? Dog person. I’m dog clucky at the moment so don’t get me started, I only have a big black hairy kune kune to scratch. What would you take to a pot luck? An oyster mushroom dish (because that’s what my partner grows) . If you could live any time in history when would it be? Late sixties. Yip, I’d probably be one of those flaky free love hippies (lol) rocking out to Jimmy Hendrix, Led Zep, Jannis Joplin...so on Why Raglan? Art school brought me to Hamilton, when the study came to an end I felt the urge to get out as you do, and started to come to Raglan almost every week for about a year. What four people dead or alive would you have to dinner? My mum, nana, and granddad (because they have all passed away and are by far my favourite peeps), and my dad as he wouldn’t like to miss out! If money were no object what frivolous non-essential would you buy for yourself? Tickets to some exotic island (may be Barbados just cause I like the name) shout a handful of good friends, treat ourselves to a life of leisure for a few weeks, any longer we’ll be over each other (lol)! Recently Raglan bowling club hosted the annual Raglan/Pirongia challenge shield. Two squads, each with 15 bowlers squared off against each other in three bowl triples teams. The tournament alternates between the Raglan and Pirongia clubs annually and is one of the

highlights of the busy bowling season. Beyond the stunning day that greeted play and lots of really competitive play, the tournament last Saturday also marked the 40th anniversary of the challenge – all the more reason why the Raglan bowlers were keen to see the shield stay here. The winning side was decided by the

total points gained by all the bowlers in the squad with Raglan bowlers coming out on top. Top triples team for the day and the only team to score four wins was again a local team – Bill Bond, Ashleigh Jeffcoat and Des Bishop. Sue Russell

Hundreds of paddlers descend on harbour

Over six hundred paddlers competed here on our harbour in the Waka Ama Races on Saturday 13th April. The day of racing began with karakia lead by our local kuia and kaumatua Eva, Pania, Merle, Russell and Sean. Nga mihi nui ki a koutou. The Novice and Junior 8km race, which was the first event of the day had 33 waka lined up on the start line which extended from outside the Te Kopua estuary across the harbour. Teams then paddled up past the wharf making for great spectator viewing. Later in the day the Open Womens, Mixed and Mens Races began in the Te Kopua estuary and paddled beyond Motukokako Point and Paritata, up to Sugarloaf. This year's fastest time for our 24km course was 1 hour 35 minutes by Manukau OCC team Vaka Manu Starboard. The first winners of the Piripi Kereopa Memorial Trophy for the fastest Senior Master Mens crew in the 24km race were Team Kaipara in a time of 1 hour 43 minutes, and an overall placing in all mens divisions of 15th out of a field of 33. The Nga Tai Whakarongo ‘Korowai Aroha’ Trophy and Club Points Prize was won by Manukau Outrigger Canoe Club who had 13 crews competing over the day. Thanks to Wharf Expresso who

kindly donated extra cash to this Prize. To our fantastic Support Boat Skippers who come willing and prepared every year - you consistently offer your time and provide a safety service without which we couldn’t host our race. It's a Frybrid, not a Hybrid

Mark Dobson commutes to Hamilton daily, but he doesn’t stop at the petrol station to fuel up. He goes down to Jo’s Camp Store to pick up vegetable oil, which he then filters and pours into his converted Volkswagon. “Theoretically speaking, any diesel engine can run on vegetable oil,” says Mark, which is actually “taking it back to its original design.” The world’s first diesel engine was unveiled in 1902 and ran on peanut oil. The reason a diesel engine can run on vegetable oil is because diesels combust their fuel using compression rather than a spark plug. Mark spent years researching online and attending workshops to understand diesel technology and the use of WVO (waste vegetable oil) as a transportion fuel. He also carefully planned what kind of car he would buy and convert. He chose a DIY kit from Germany, but there are several kits to consider. Mark was able to ask questions to the supplier, and installed it at home with help from a couple of mates, Cameron Olson and Brent “Red” Christophers. Mark’s wife, Heidi, said she waited a couple months before she began to drive the car herself, which they converted over the summer holidays. Getting stuck on the divvy with veggie oil all over the place is not a good look. Once the bugs were worked out, it was all good. Marc points out that it isn’t for puttering around town. “It only works efficiently for long drives.” The car runs on diesel to start, and switches to vegetable oil when the engine ishot enough to warm the veggie which makes it less viscious and able to be injected into the engine. “It kicks in at Te Uku.” Litre for litre, the vegetable oil tank lasts about as long as diesel. While living in the US, Mark ran a pick-up truck converted to run on vegetable oil successfully for 3 years. He was familiar with the routine maintenance, but this was the first time he converted a vehicle at home. Heidi reckons, “Mark is mechanically minded and believes in Kiwi ingenuity. He always tries to fix things.” Mark points out, “I knew it was a DIY job, because older VW Golf’s are well suited to run on veggie.” Running a car on veggie oil produces a smell just like fish and chips. Preparing your fuel takes time and effort, but the merits far outweigh the minor inconveniences. “What will we do when petrol is $5 a litre? Will we keep driving to Hamilton? We have to think about those things and also think about the return to local economies, where we invest our time and money in goods and services produced here in Raglan.”

Along with regular maintenance, Marc must prepare his fuel each week. He says the key thing is the quality of the oil, and that depends on the supplier and Marc’s preparation. “You really need to trust the people you’re getting the oil from and have a good relationship. It’s all about the relationship.”
