Bringing her own personal experience of family violence, domestic abuse and gang association, Jude Simpson has been committed to working with women and young adults to better their futures for the past 13 years. Jude’s ability to relate to victims of domestic violence comes from her own experience; from the age of 9 Jude was a victim of child abuse and subsequently found herself caught up in a cycle of domestic violence, substance abuse and crime. This cycle continued for the next 28 years, by which time Jude had

been a member of both the Mongrel Mob and Highway 61 gangs, had had four children to four different partners and had been involved in serious criminal activities. At age 37, Jude found the strength to turn her life around and is now committed to helping others do the same. Jude has a passion for empowering women to break the cycle of domestic violence and to !"#$%!& '(!)& '*& %!#+& ,-%.%%/"0& #"+& positive lives a passion which prompted her to write her own autobiography entitled ‘Lost and Found’. RAGLAN TRUST HOSPITAL

Friends devote 20 years to Wainui Reserve

Back in 1992 a group of passionate volunteers came together to form ‘Friends of Wainui Reserve’ and have since transformed what was neglected, overgrazed farmland into a beautiful space for the community to enjoy. Surrounded by native bush and running streams, the Wainui Bush Park Reserve, located before the Ngarunui Beach turn off, is frequented often by many members of the community whether it be for weddings, birthdays, picnics, or a tranquil walk through the meandering tracks. Administered by the Waikato District Council, the Friends of Wainui work with the council offering a hand to help maintain the space and plant trees to encourage native birds such as the tui, fantail, grey warbler and silvereye to frequent the area. Over the past 20 years the group have planted around 15,000 trees and regularly dedicate anything from 800 to 1000 hours a year to keeping the park in top notch condition. Chairman of the group Ian Stuart says one of the members has even travelled from Hamilton “every fortnight for the past 18 years.” The group comes together every second Monday morning and gets to work with “anything that needs to be done,” from cutting down trees to laying gravel on the tracks, while Ian admits it is also a bit of “social time.” Most of the volunteers that were in the original group are still current active members with Ian guessing many of them to be in their mideighties. Ian shows some concern that there are not many younger members in the group to ensure that the park can continue to be looked after, and says new members are always welcome. Ian and the Friends of Wainui are also keen to start planning some events to be held in the park like a small concert to be held every year – and are on the lookout for any suggestions and assistance from people in the community. The Whaingaroa Youth Movement performance held last year was a great example with the show really utilising the outdoor space the park provides. The Friends of Wainui Reserve have made the Bush Park into a great place for everyone to come together and enjoy and if you would like to lend a hand, they invite new members to come join them every second Monday, 8:30am at the Wainui Bush Park Reserve. For more information contact Ian on (07) 825 0490. Maki Nishiyama

Birthday gig takes Raglan back to musical roots Raglan musos from way back reckon it’s time to get the “old school” crowd rockin’ here again – so they’re putting on a gig come Saturday week at Raglan Club to celebrate the 60th birthday of longtime local “Hubby”. Hopefully it’s the “catalyst” for some great gigs to follow, says drummer Freddy Limbert, now playing regularly in Raglan and beyond with local band Ashley Knox and the Kryptonites. A night of entertainment will be !"#$%&!'()* !#+,* #-* ./0!* 1(,!2* 345,!* – roots and swamp musicians, promises Freddy. “Honorary bluesman” Tura Bullfrog Rata is billed as the gig’s feature act along with the Roosters – namely Freddy and his father Sid Limbert who’s just moved back into town, albeit across harbour at Te Akau. Local songstress Maida Barker along with guitarist Dom Gavin (Illicit Wah Wahs) will be kicking the party into gear, performing an acoustic set of some hot new original tunes.

Then a band called Swamp Thing does its thing. It’s the biggest sound from the smallest possible band you can form, says Freddy – “a power blues duo”. Hailing from Rotorua but recently returned from Oz is drummer and percussionist Michael Barker with Grant Haua, a greatly respected singersongwriter and guitarist from Tauranga. These two musicians come together to bring a wealth of experience, passion and love for their %6&-2* 2#* +&7,* 8345,!9:&;#56,<=* +5!'%* with a deep groove. Local trio Ashley Knox and the Kryptonites are next up with their fresh, organic sounds – soulful swamp hop. Then it’s Bullfrog Rata and the Roosters. Hubby’s birthday wish was to have The Remarkable Beat Roosters perform at his party but Freddy and Sid were unable to get hold of their third band member, Brian “HB” Harley, so Bullfrog was next in line. And no matter what lineup Bullfrog appears in – the Midge Marsden band, Handsome Giants, The Undergators or as

a powerhouse solo performer – the music, the voice, all conspire in one “riveting” package, reckons Freddy. Added to the mix will be Sid Limbert’s talents in singing, arranging and bass playing with Freddy – known as a :&+3#>&(2* ?,6%5!!'#('!2* @* '(26#<5%'()* light and shade into the arrangements, showcasing the empathy between father and son that made The Roosters a rhythm section force to be reckoned with back in the ‘90s. The high spot of their career was winning over an Auckland audience at a support gig for king of the blues, America’s BB King. “This will be a night of towtapping, rock n’ swampy blues,” says Freddy. “I’m stoked to bring it to you (the Raglan public).”

Why Does Business Get Such A Bad Rap? by Stephanie Philp - Chair For people who aren’t in business, it’s easy to believe that people who are in business are there for just one purpose - to make money. My own experiences as a business owner, mentor and coach to small business owners has shown me that nothing could be further from the truth. Some of the reasons people start a business are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on the list at all. In fact, many people who are in business could make more money, and be a lot less stressed, if they stayed in a corporate job or career. So money clearly, is often not the motivating factor. Sure, businesses need money in order to survive and prosper. Everyone does. That’s the case whether you’re in business or in a job. No one begrudges others a living. Purpose The purpose for being in business is often different from the reasons for going into business. Every small business has a purpose - a reason for being. And it’s that purpose that empowers them to take the risk ;0.)"(#"(+"0"&(+=@"$8"/$(./"(.#$"43+(.*++"0.)"#-0#"=**%+"#-*,"/$(./"6-*." things get tough. Their purpose for being in business is typically more altruistic than the reasons they started in business. Typically business owners say things like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hen I talk to local business owners, I am always blown away by their innovation, enthusiasm, and passion for both their business and for Raglan. They understand that their businesses, however large or small, are positively contributing to our community. They just don’t tend to shout about it. Without business, we’d have a substantially less diverse, vital community. So, here’s a challenge for you. Start noticing what local businesses, directly and indirectly, contribute to Raglan. Then please support them so they can continue to make a difference. How did Right Up My Alley originate? Well...we (my partner Keith and I) started with RAGLAN DEALERS on the main St which was at the time a rundown second-hand shop. We built that up over 8 years to be a very well known collectables shop. Then we decided to open a second shop with more of a focus on art & world furnishings (including antiques), keeping the two shops different from each other.

Raglan Lions recycle for sight As winter cleaning gets under way, the Raglan Lions are asking people to look through dresser drawers and closets for used eyeglasses and donate them to the Lions Recycle For Sight program. During the month of May the Raglan Lions Club will be collecting used prescription eyeglasses and prescription and nonprescription sunglasses as part of a unique recycling program. The collected glasses will be cleaned and prepared for distribution in developing countries where eye care is often unaffordable and inaccessible. “We need everyone to donate their used

eyeglasses,” said Bob MacLeod President of Raglan Lions “In developing countries, an eye exam can cost as much as one month’s wages and a single eye doctor may serve a community of hundreds of thousands of people.” The donated glasses will be shipped to a regional Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center where they will be cleaned, categorized by prescription and prepared for distribution by Lions and other groups. To donate used glasses (including sunglasses and reading glasses), drop them off at the Lions Opportunity Shop, as we will accept glasses year round.

OPINION: A Raglan Rumination by Albert Einsteinlager Striding down the street I suddenly felt an impulsive urge to get my hair cut. It was beginning to morph into a look that my darling wife refers to as “The Cockatoo.” Normally I seek out an old fashioned barber with an upright chair, minimal '2#(+#*1+&,2%*3+4#3#5%*.,+(2#(+6../+7)"+.*(.0(#%*.1+1"0%*3+7)"0+,2)0(+,(#78+ However today I had a little of the “devil may care” attitude in me. OPINION: Spotlight on bureaucracy by Ian McKissack Recent letters and article in the ‘Chronicle’ say that on a weekday the 3.40 p.m. bus from Hamilton left 15 passengers behind. They then had to wait for the 5.40 p.m. bus. Apparently this is now a regular occurrence. As I understand it, this service is managed by Waikato Regional Council, aka Environment Waikato. You would think that with passenger numbers obviously building up to overload there would have been some sort of back up arrangement. Apparently not. >2%,+ ')*&04,+ 47+ 30)<%*3+ -.$%.:+ (2#(+ DEF+ 2#,+ -.')4.+ #+ 0)3".+ bureaucracy focused on its own existence and importance rather than its role as a servant of the public. Under the shadow of possible reabsorption into Waikato District Council they are nevertheless considering buying expensive new premises because they are currently housed in a leaky building. I wonder what management decision got them into a potentially wet building? Another reason for moving, apparently, is that staff numbers are too large for the present building. They must be increasing even faster than the WRC rates demands. Its only about ten years since the split from Waikato District Council occurred. At that time ‘environment’ was only a modest item on WDC rates. What are all those people who weren’t needed 10 years ago up to I wonder, apart from arranging buckets under the leaks and ignoring overloaded bus problems on the weak excuse of funding? They have the money, not the will.

HOOKED UP with
