Jason Tatana pictured with the Junior 7th Grade Black team.

This week the Chronicle caught up with rugby coach Jason Tatana. Who do you coach? Our son wanted to play rugby this year. So gone back to rugby coaching. Raglan Junior (black) 7th Grade. How long have you been coaching for? Been involved in coaching for about 10 years. Why did you decide to put your hand up to coach? At that time when I decided to coach, I wasn’t happy with the quality of coaching. No good moaning, get involved. What are the highlights of coaching a team? When you see players applying what you have taught them. Also hearing and watching players you have coached playing for the All Blacks, NZ Warriors and Super 15 rugby. What are the challenges?

Trying to balance it all out family, work, sports. What is your coaching style? Help players master the fundamentals of rugby. Instil into each player a positive winning attitude and this is reflected in their positive attitude towards themselves and others on and off the field. Is it all about winning? It is important to teach our kids the value of winning with a positive approach at a young age. Was sport important to you growing up? Sure was. I come from a family of 10, and we all loved our sports. How do you think team sports benefit our young ones today? Teaches them teamwork, camaraderie, leadership and culture. Best piece of advice you could give to parents? Don’t live your dreams through your child’s sport. I have seen it happen a lot throughout my coaching career.

Raglan Holiday Park awarded Visitor Experience Excellence

Park manager Rob Clark said he and wife Mary had had a busy winter with the units full most weekends and booking requests throughout the year on the rise. Many spots were also booked from year to year. To cap off a good winter, the park was recognised recently by the Holiday Park Association of New Zealand, receiving the ServiceIQ Holiday Park Visitor Experience Award at the HPANZ annual conference in Auckland.

Rob said the park was one of the first of the 320-odd holiday parks around New Zealand to embrace new tourism qualifications for its staff. “I just understand the value of customer service,” said Rob, who had been in the holiday park industry for about 20 years. “It’s not just important, it’s your business.” Five of the park’s 15 staff members were enrolled in tourism courses, which had about 40 different units on offer so qualifications could be tailor-made to each person. More staff would be enrolling for the qualifications in the future. Rob said the staff had really got on board with the training and were now seeing visitor experience in a different light.

“We’re not selling accommodation, we’re selling memories,” he said. “From the moment they [the guests] come in the door, they start interacting with us and we want that experience to be memorable.” To get to Raglan, guests had often driven over roads that could be challenging for some. “They arrive here and they want to be looked after.” “A lot of people will travel here who don’t have any set plans. ‘What is there to do in Raglan?’ is a reasonably common question [for park staff].” Being warm and friendly was part of the job for staff, along with problem solving and giving out information to guests. Award-winning Raglan author, Sarah Johnson, will be launching her latest book – The Bold Ship Phenomenal (Flat Bed Press, 2015) – on 15 August 2015 at the Word Café Raglan readers and writers festival. The Bold Ship Phenomenal is Sarah’s first book to be published in New Zealand since she won the 2011 Joy Cowley Award for her

Up and coming artist films new music video in Raglan

Musician Amy West, aka Parabola West, during the filming of her Fire video in Raglan last weekend.

A

new musician has arrived in town, bringing her social media success and burgeoning career with her. Amy West, known as Parabola West in the music world, was awarded a $10,000 grant from NZOnAir after online public voting took her unreleased song Fire to number one on

theaudience.co.nz website in May. “The song is about that inner battle about knowing better but still being drawn to the flame,” Amy said. “It’s a universal theme that people can relate to.” With the grant she could record and master the song in a good studio and get a professional video made to go with the song. NZOnAir will

then promote this through its own channels, which is “a significant platform for New Zealand artists”, she said. Amy was based in Auckland at the time, but she and husband David decided to have a change of lifestyle and down size. David, who runs a recruitment company in Auckland, had always wanted to live in Raglan, so the pair

moved to a property on the outskirts of Raglan at the end of July. The filming of the Fire video started on the property last weekend and wound up in Rotorua, with a crew of about eight people, including a stylist, and a drone to get those “wide, amazing panning shots”. While the video was yet to be edited, she said it would be visually spectacular, with imagery and costumes reminiscent of the TV medieval fantasy show, Game of Thrones. “It was quite an experience. I felt very, very humbled by the whole thing,” she said. The song and video would be released about mid-October. Amy planned to hold some sort of event to celebrate the release, particularly to pay homage to the fans that had voted for her and shared her song on social media. “I can’t wait to show them [the fans] because they really own it, like shareholders in this experience.” She described her music as adult pop music: “It suits more the people aged 28 years and up. A lot of the themes resonant with people who have quite a lot of life experience”. As for the unusual name, Parabola, it was inspired by her interest in parabolic solar cookers, and seeing parallels between her music and how the cookers worked. Amy, who was born in the United States and moved to New Zealand 12 years ago, launched her solo career as Parabola West two years ago. Just before moving to Raglan, she did a short tour in the Hamilton, Ruapehu and Wellington areas – just her and her keyboard “for more of an acoustic experience”. Amy plans to investigate the Raglan music scene as well. Rachel Benn Check out Amy and her music at: www.parabolawest.com

Who’s in the running for a 2015 RAFFA? Filmmaking is alive and well in Raglan, if this year’s nominations for the Raglan Arts Film Festival Awards are anything to go by. Here’s a peek at the 2015 shortlist which covers a diverse array of topics and genres: KUHL is a short surf/lifestyle film depicting a day in the life of a Raglan surfer, while The Ultimate Waterman covers all the thrilling action from this year’s contest to find the world’s best all-round waterman. The plight of the Maui dolphin is the subject of several submissions. Message to

the Minister captures the concerns of Raglan locals about the future of this critically endangered dolphin; Maui Dolphin Day is a record of the 2015 Raglan event, while Save Maui Dolphin's Today is a music video starring musician Tiki Taane and children from Raglan Area School. Raglan’s growing cultural diversity is explored in an episode of TVNZ show Neighbourhood (narrated by Masterchef Aaron Brunet) while in Raglan Remembers, producers Ken Soanes and Mike O'Neill interview Raglan locals about their relatives’

involvement in World War One. Plus, music and dance in Nevereverland, a sweet story about a humble New Zealand farming couple in Ross & Beth, short historical documentary Tippahee and many more. Extracts from selected RAFFA films will be screened before main feature films throughout the festival and at the red carpet awards night. For full details of this year’s RAFFA nominees, please see the official film festival programme, available from the Old School, or online at www.raglanartscentre.co.nz/rff.

Warning lifted in harbour W

arnings against collecting shellfish and swimming in the Greenslade Road and Lorenzen Bay areas of the harbour have now been lifted. The Waikato District Council confirmed that the warning signs have now been removed, following an overflow of untreated wastewater into the harbour about two weeks ago. A Greenslade Road resident reported on August 1 that a manhole on a track between two houses on the road had been overflowing for the past three days. The council said the overflowing wastewater was running about 20 metres

down the track into the harbour from the manhole, which appeared to have been blocked by roots. A serviceman temporarily fixed the problem that day, returning the following day to fix the blockage properly and clean and sanitise the area. Signage warning against gathering shellfish or swimming was put up on Monday, August 3, for a period of about five days. “High flush and dilution processes occurring in the harbour during winter will ensure that the any public health risk resulting from the minor spill is minimal,” the council said. Rachel Benn

Winter warmers at the YOT Raglan Sports Fishing Club Club prize giving

Richard Hart with the Pete Saul Tray for the most tagged fish for New Zealand 33 yellow tail kingfish.

YOT Club favourites Labretta Suede and the Motel 6 play at the Yotty this Saturday.

I

t may be deep in winter, but the Yot Club has a full line up of music to get you through to the warmer times. This Saturday brings one of The Yot Club's favourite bands back, Labretta Suede and The Motel 6. Labretta is the countries most outrageous front woman - a pure rock n roll animal - and her band are one of the tightest hard rocking units around. Touring internationally they have just returned from touring the West coast of Australia, and are amping to bring their high octane rock’n’roll circus to Raglan. Don’t miss this chance to catch one of the countries top bands at the top of their game. Other gigs coming up include: The Brown Brothers on Saturday the 22nd, and Strangely Arousing on Saturday the 29th. Strangely Arousing have been residing in Raglan for a few months now but are rarely here, gigging consistently in Auckland and touring, getting a strong profile for their roots/reggae/ska/ funk sound, one not to be missed.

Saturday the 5th sees Raglan favourites Knights of the Dub Table in town, showcasing their new EP. Get in early for this one, Knights' gigs always pack the Yotty out, expect this one showcasing a collection of new tunes to do the same. After this we are shutting down for a couple of weeks opening again on the weekend of the 25/26th Sept. And what a gig to open with A Hori Buzz on the Saturday the 26th. One of the Countries most electrifying bands A Hori Buzz is lead by Aaron Tokona, one of the Countries top electric guitarists and a man with serious pedigree in Weta and Cairo Knife Fight. This is one not to be missed tickets on line and at the venue. As well as these Saturday gigs the Yot is open every Friday with local resident DJs, free pool and action sports coverage and every Thursday with free pool, and great music and the best in live and recorded surfing and action sport. Don’t forget our free pick up and drop offs just ring or text 021409268.

The Raglan Sport Fishing Club held its annual prize giving last Saturday night with a huge crowd overflowing outside at the Raglan rugby club. All talking fishing, it was a great night. There were many highlights, but the best of all were four national awards to members. Geoff Peake won the Peter and Noelene Short Memorial Trophy for the most tagged marlin for New Zealand with 19 striped marlin. Richard Hart won the Pete Saul Silver Tray for the most tagged fish for New Zealand with 33 yellow tail kingfish. Graham Henderson caught the biggest southern bluefin tuna in New Zealand at 80.70 kg. Junior Danielle Gordon caught a new New Zealand record skip jack tuna weighing in at 4.484 kg on 10 kg line.

PARENTS, HOW SAFE IS YOUR YOUNG DRIVER?

These are prestigious awards and the club is very proud of our members, and we continue to lead the country in tag and release. In total club members tagged 135 fish of various species.

We look forward to our 2015/16 fishing season with eager anticipation. Our achievements in the past have been plentiful in Raglan: Kopua Boat ramp rebuilt by members, the pontoon at the wharf fixed and the VHF radio up on the mountain as well as plans to start repairs on the Manu Bay boat ramp. Sheryl Hart
