Dear  Editor, Last  week's  Chronicle  seemed  rather  biased  in  your  election  coverage.  You  printed,  â€œClint  Baddeley,  our  tireless,  dedicated  ward  memberâ€?  and  â€œa  hard-working  Clintâ€?.  Hard  working  he  may  be,  but  effective?  Since  2009,  my  rates  have  increased  by  a  quarter  RYHU DQG DERYH LQĂ€DWLRQ DQG WKH /RQJ Term  Plan  is  for  similar  increases  in  future. It  doesn't  help  that  Clint  seems  to  believe  that  council  borrowing  creates  jobs  and,  as  Chair  of  Finance  Committee,  he's  overseen  the  plan  to  raise  the  cost  of  borrowing  from  $2.6m  to  $4.1m  this  year.  Borrowing  might  FUHDWH MREV LQ +DPLOWRQ IRU WKH ÂżUPV who've  built  the  museum,  footbridge,  wharf,  roundabouts,  etc,  but  the  millions  for  those  projects  must  have  driven  many  jobs  and  people  out  of  Raglan. In  2010  Clint's  Council  had  the  country's  lowest  voter  turnout.  In  2013  65  nominations  for  50  positions  is  even  worse  than  2010's  73.  This  July's  nine  uninformative  media  releases  were  typical;Íž  people  don't  know  what's  happening,  lose  interest  and  we  end  up  hearing  little,  rates  up,  frequent  blunders  (eg  painting  Bow  St  road  http://www.weathermap.co.nz/?p=ragla markings  3  times  last  year),  etc. :H QHHG D FKDQJH Regards,  John  Lawson,  Raglan Weather Map

Elation, caution as windfarm project dealt a critical blow

Whaanga  Coast  resident  and  Point  Boardriders  Club  president  Reuben  Brown  said  he  was  â€œelatedâ€?  that  Contact  â€“  New  Zealand’s  second  largest  electricity  generator  but  majority-owned  by  Australia’s  Origin  Energy  â€“  had  decided  to  exit  the  Hauauru  ma  raki  project  as  it  focused  on  geothermal  rather  than  wind  power  as  its  preferred  generation  technology. But  he  cautioned  that  another  energy  company  could  still  potentially  take  up  the  resource  consent  sometime  in  the  future,  and  said  he’d  be  â€œguttedâ€?  if  that  happened. Even  so  he  doubted  any  revised  windfarm  proposal  would  stretch  down  the  coast  as  far  as  Mussel  Rock. Reuben  said  his  and  other  Whaanga  Coasters’  protests  had  been  about  the  sheer  size  and  the  â€œin-your-faceâ€?  nature  of  the  Contact  project.   â€œWe  value  our  passive  landscape,  and  being  able  to  see  many  kilometres  up  our  coast  without  the  interruption  of  turbines Â

with  their  lights  on  at  night,â€?  he  said.  â€œWindfarm  developments  need  to  be  a  little  more  passive  and  less  aggressive.â€? He  was  not  opposed  outright  to  windfarms,  but  felt  they  should  be  more  â€œsympatheticâ€?  to  the  people  they  were  affecting.   His  preference  was  for  smaller  operations  on  a  more  local  scale,  â€œnot  takeover  by  big  corporatesâ€?.   If  an  energy  company  wanted  to  build  a  huge  windfarm  â€œwhy  not  do  it  in  Auckland  where  its  LPPHGLDWH FRQVXPHUV DUH" 5DJODQ EHQHÂżWV very  little  anywayâ€?. Reuben  said  in  areas  like  Raglan  there  were  alternatives  to  windfarms  â€“  solar  panels,  for  instance,  were  less  intrusive  to  such  areas  and  didn’t  take  away  the  pristine  landscapes. Fellow  Hauauru  ma  raki  opponent  Phil  McCabe,  who  was  a  familiar  face  at  hearings  over  the  project  as  he  effectively  acted  as  a  lawyer  for  local  opponents,  was  out  of  town  when  news  of  Contact’s  turnaround  broke  and  knew  nothing  about  it  until  texted  by  the  Chronicle. He  was  pleased  to  hear  of  Contact’s  decision,  saying  the  project  â€œwas  always  a  bad  ideaâ€?. “We  don’t  need  to  further  industrialise  that  northern  coastal  landscape  to  fuel  greater  consumption  in  our  cities  and  EROVWHU DOUHDG\ IDW FRUSRUDWH SURÂżWV ´ KH texted  back.  â€œWe  should  reduce  wasteful  HQHUJ\ XVH ÂżUVW DQG WKHQ LI ZH ÂżQG ZH QHHG more  [energy],  the  Government  should Â

incentivise  community-owned,  diverse  and  dispersed  generation.   That  would  SOXJ ODUJH ÂżQDQFLDO OHDNV IURP KRXVHKROGV communities  and  the  country.â€? Reuben  told  the  Chronicle  he’d  spoken  to  Wind  Farm  Group  managing  director  Al  Yates  who,  while  he  was  disappointed  his  group’s  joint  venture  with  Contact  was  not  going  ahead,  â€œcommended  us  for  standing  up  for  our  community  â€Ś  and  speaking  our  mindâ€?. The  Te  Akau  coast  windfarm  â€“  which  would  have  been  six  times  the  size  of  Meridian’s  28-turbine  windfarm  at  Te  Uku  â€“  was  expected  to  have  injected  $180  million  into  the  regional  economy,  and  the  Waikato  Chamber  of  Commerce  said  Contact’s  pullout  was  just  another  disappointment  for  the  region  and  especially  the  energy  sector  following  the  recent  Huntly  coalmining  layoffs. Meanwhile  Waikato  District  Mayor  Allan  Sanson  was  quoted  as  saying  the  project  was  never  something  the  council  was  banking  on,  and  that  it  would  have  brought  not  only  a  considerable  number  of  jobs  to  the  area  during  construction  but  also  â€œa  fair  bit  of  disruption  as  wellâ€?. But  New  Zealand  Wind  Energy  Association  boss  Eric  Pyle  hoped  there  might  be  a  future  for  the  Te  Akau  coast  project  as  a  smaller  proposition,  pointing  out  it  was  already  fully  consented. We  get  called  to  treat  a  few  seal  pups  every  year,  some  are  injured  and  others  are  thin  and  still  adjusting  to  hunting  for  themselves.  Often  the  injuries  are  minor  and  treatable  with  long  acting  antibiotics,  pain  relief  and  a  day  of  rest  in  our  isolation  ward  before  being  released. Please  do  not  feed  them  as  they  become  humanized  very  quickly,  and  it  is  an  important  developmental  stage  for  the  pups  and  they  may  never  learn  to  hunt  for  themselves.  Keep  children  and  dogs  well  away  for  their  own  safety  as  well  as  the  seals,  and  keep  bystanders  to  a  minimum  to  ensure  the  seal  doesn’t  get  stressed.  When  the  vet  or  vet  nurse  arrives  they  will  assess  the  seal  and  decide  the  best  course  of  action.  Often  this  requires  minimal  intervention  as  advised  by  the  Department  of  Conservation,  and  also  preserves  their  wild  nature  and  instincts. Students’ learning is enhanced through teaching role

What  better  way  to  develop  an  understanding  of  how  learners  learn  by  building  up  knowledge  of  how  teachers  teach.   Since  the  beginning  to  Term  2  the  Year  9  students  have  been  teaching  Te  Reo  Maori  in  the  Year  0-6  (mainstream)  syndicate  of  our  school.   They  have  had  to  develop  knowledge  about  the  structure  of  lessons  and  build  on  different  ideas  about  keeping  their  students  engaged  in  their  lessons.   Not  only  are  they  building  relationships  with  the  Year  0-6  students,  they  are  using  their  knowledge  about  teaching  to  help  them  build  a  better  understanding  of  how  they  learn. Student teaching in action

As  we  introduced  ourselves  to  the  kids  they  looked  en- gaged  so  we  blew  through  it  as  if  we  were  already  teach- ers.   But  I  think  the  most  challenging  thing  would  have  been  the  waiata  because  some  of  the  children  couldn’t  say  the  words  but  we  did  get  through  it.   Now  I  can’t  wait  to  see  and  team  teach  again.   It’s  like  I  got  this  adrenaline  rush.   Over  all,  if  I  didn’t  have  Reece  and  Bhumika,  I  would  be  still  standing  at  the  door.   I  think  having  my  friends  helped  me  achieve.
