and appealing to 8yr olds is a whole lot harder than just playing with 2. What is you coaching style? Kind of strict. Players are here to listen and learn but don’t forget to laugh at some things. It can’t be all serious all the time ‘aye mate’. Is it all about winning? No. But winning is what the game is about. If you don’t step on the pitch to win, go find another sport. It’s also about learning to lose graciously and if you lose, make sure you left nothing in the tank and only lose because the other team was better on the day. And when you do win, winning graciously while fully celebrating your success is all part of it. Was sport important to you growing up? You bet. My dad was a PE teacher. So I did surfing, soccer, skiing, snowboarding, skateboarding, tennis. How do you think team sports benefit our young ones today? See above about losing and winning properly and with grace. Also trying your hardest at something physical and giving it all you’ve got. For some kids even an hour of disciplined activity is knew. Best piece of advice ever given? There’s no such thing as can’t. If you say you can’t - you certainly never will. Try and fail but don’t fail to try. Best moment of the recent world cup? I have two. Hearing starts for Rangitahi Peninsula development

A

new causeway bridge could be built within 18 months of the Waikato District Council agreeing to re-zone the land on Rangitahi Peninsula, says the Raglan Land Company. The council started hearing submissions on the company’s land change proposal for the peninsula in Raglan this week. The hearing at the Raglan Bowling Club, which will continue until at least today (Thursday), is being held before two independent commissioners who will make a recommendation to council. The Raglan Land Company (RLC), owned by the local Peacocke family, wants a 97-hectare area currently zoned ‘coastal’ to be re-zoned to allow a multi-stage development of mixed-use sites and more than 500 residential sites to go ahead over the next 40 years. A total of 127 submissions were made on the proposal, nearly 30 of which would be presented at the hearing. The submissions came from individuals and organizations including the Raglan Residents and Ratepayers Association, Tainui Hapu, Fish and Game NZ, the NZ Fire Service

Commission and the NZ Transport Agency. The RLC has two days to present its point of view. This would be followed by a site visit, then nearly two days of oral submissions, finishing with the council report. While most of the existing Rangitahi Peninsula residents supported the development, there were many submissions opposing it. Opoturu Road residents were concerned about how an increase in traffic on their street, as the main access to the development, would affect them. Others were concerned about the impact of the development on Raglan’s character and environment, the infrastructure’s ability to cope with it, the effect on rates and ratepayers, and whether the commercial part of the development would take business away from the existing central business area. Those for the development supported the growth it would bring and the extra amenities, such as the proposed walking and cycling tracks on the peninsula. David Peacocke said while he did not have a specific timeframe, he planned to start with the bridge - and this could be 18 months away - if the Private Plan Change 12 was approved by council.

The northern end of the peninsula, where there are currently seven properties owned by other people, would be the first area of development. This could comprise 30-40 houses at first, which could take three to four years. While he didn’t see any demand for commercial development right at the start, the re-zoning would allow for some small commercial development, such as a childcare centre, a retirement village and a coffee shop. According to RLC’s re-zoning application, the vision for the first stage of development, the so called ‘Village Core’, was a high-density 117-lot residential area covering 7.7 hectares with a mixed use village concentrated around a central square. This would include visitor accommodation and facilities and boutique commercial facilities. Over the 10-year history of the proposed development, the council had agreed in principle that some form of development on the Rangitahi Peninsula was appropriate but on the condition that development was “sustainable and in accordance with landscape management, urban design and structure planning best practice”. aglan residents got up close and personal with the Waikato Rugby team last week when they brought their first pre-season game to town. The free match, which pitted Waikato against North Harbour, was played at the Raglan Rugby Club and attracted a large crowd of locals. The game ended in a 40 to 17 win to North Harbour, but this did not dampen the enthusiasm of the crowd. The cowbells were ringing, Mooloo, the Waikato rugby mascot, was charming the crowd, and children were

diving into the buckets of red and yellow jellybeans on offer. Waikato media spokesperson Hamish Forsman said the local turnout was “outstanding”, and was much better than their game at Otorohanga a few days later. While the Waikato team never liked to lose, they had not fielded their best team and it was their first game of the season. The team stayed three nights at Poihakena Marae for a pre-season training camp, he said. Raglan Area School parents catered two meals for the team at the marae as part of a

class fundraising effort. Members of the team also visited eight different schools on their way to Raglan, including Te Uku, Waitetuna and Raglan Area schools, where children had the opportunity to meet them and get autographs. Hamish said the team had been well looked after at the marae and they had had a great time here. The Waikato team always liked to get out into the smaller rural towns and this year it was Raglan’s turn. “It’s just a great way to start the season,” he said. Rachel Benn

Cable project in feasibility stage

Aa

meeting held last month to discuss trans-Tasman submarine communications cable, which will make land at Ngarunui Beach, has raised concerns by a local environmental group, including why the meeting wasn’t more widely publicised to inform Whaingaroa locals. The TGA Cable is a submarine fibre-optic cable for telecommunications. The cable will connect Raglan to Sydney, allowing New Zealand telecommunications customers to utilise Australia’s four international telecommunication systems. The meeting, held on 14 July and hosted by the Coastal Reserves Committee, was a presentation by Vodafone to inform “relevant community interest groups” of the Tasman Global Access (TGA) cable project. Whaingaroa Environmental Defence Secretary John Lawson, who attended the meeting, said he had concerns regarding the notification of the meeting for all interested parties. He said that the meeting was the first time that he had heard about the TGA Cable project. “We’ve [the Whaingaroa Environmental Defence group] not been consulted until this meeting. There will be a formal resource consent process sometime in August. We’ll be looking at those and [will] see if anything needs to be done at this stage,” Mr Lawson said. Vodafone Community Relations manager Caitlin Metz said that Vodafone’s public notification of the meeting, attended by at least 14 Raglan locals, was not necessary as “it was not a public meeting”. However, Ms Metz said that Vodafone worked with the Raglan Community Board (RCB) to develop a list of interested parties. “We worked with Linda Cole [Chairperson of RCB] to ensure relevant community interest groups were invited,” she said. Linda Cole said she” would not be drawn into discussion” regarding the meeting.

Mr Lawson said that although “It’s [TGA Cable] probably not going to do a great deal of harm” he would like to ensure the environmental impact remained as low as possible. Ms Metz said that the resource consent, which was hoped to be submitted “in the near future”, would address all environmental issues. “We’re engaging experts in many fields to submit a complete resource consent application. “The effects of the proposed new cable are expected to be the same low environmental impact as the existing ‘Aqualink cable’,” she said. The Aqualink cable was laid in 2001 and runs through marine environment, Ngarunui and Wainui Reserve. It will provide the infrastructure needed to complete the TGA Cable project. “The proposed new cable will follow the same route through Wainui Reserve utilising the existing easement corridor,” Ms Metz said. Ms Metz said the TGA Cable is expected to significantly improve New Zealand’s international telecommunication connectivity by providing a more reliable connection than current methods. “Currently [New Zealand’s] international connectivity is primarily reliant on the Southern Cross Cable,” Ms Metz said. The Southern Cross Cable is the only international cable system that provides all current international internet access. Although there would be no improvement to Raglan’s current telecommunications infrastucture, Vodafone has made the offer to the Surf Life Saving Trust to provide telecommunications capability to the clubhouse on Ngarunui Beach, Ms Metz said. “Vodafone is going to work with the Surf Lifesaving Club to discuss their telecommunication requirements for the Ngarunui Beach-based clubhouse. The TGA Cable project is currently in feasibility stage and is expected to be started, with the erection of the cable landing station on Wainui Road, early next year. Marcia Ahern

Spring Flower Show returns after 25 years

Back in Bloom: Raglan Horticultural Society President Barbara O’Doherty is encouraging entries into this year’s Spring Flower Show to be held next month.

A

fter a 25-year hibernation, the Raglan Spring Flower Show is back in bloom and organisers are inviting all green-thumbs, from adults and children alike, to submit entries into next month’s show. The Spring Flower show, organised by the Raglan Horticultural Society, will be held on September 6 at the Union Church Hall. Raglan Horticultural Society President Barbara O’Doherty said the idea to resurrect the annual event came last year as the group had their usual Garden Ramble (local garden tours). She said the organisation of a flower show had been well received by locals and schools. “Some people are very excited. We have two schools already on board,” Barbara said. The show will have four categories for individuals to enter: Flowers, Floral Art, Vegetables and a Children’s Section. Barbara said the judging criteria considered colour, creativity, balance, quality, imagination and, with vegetable entries, firmness. “We want to make a great show of what

we grow in Raglan, Te Mata, everywhere this side of the Devy [Deviation].” “Participation is the name of the game” and people from all walks of life are encouraged to enter, she said. “We just want people to participate. Teenagers are welcome to enter… if there are flowers in mum’s garden and mum doesn’t want to enter, come along! Tell all your friends.” With such short notice of the show, especially for vegetables, Barbara encourages, “If you have got something growing already, keep it growing. Keep the slugs away. Even if you don’t have the best bloom, bring it along!” A gold-coin donation is all it costs for adult entries, however children are free, she said. The Raglan Horticultural Society would like to hear anyone who can volunteer their time for the Spring Flower Show on September 6. The Raglan Spring Flower Show entry forms are available from Raglan i-Site, Raglan Library, Raglan Community House or Raglan Book & Gift Centre. Marcia Ahern

Hairy problem mystifies staff At least six wigs have mysteriously disappeared from the heads of two female mannequins at the Raglan Lions Opportunity Shop over the past month or so. “We’re all a bit bamboozled by it,” said shop manager Wendy Coxhead. At first Wendy thought people may have been swiping them for the Raglan Art To Wear contest at the end of May, but none of the wigs turned up on stage there. Then, as the wigs continued to disappear, mostly in twos, she thought maybe the thief wanted something to wear to this weekend’s Masquerade Ball. “First of all you think it’s a bit of a joke. Then when it gets to three or four (wigs), it’s not funny any more. When it gets to six, you think b****r it, the mannequins can just go bald.” And bald they have remained. Shop volunteer Pat was on duty when the last two wigs went missing about two weeks ago. There were two female customers in the shop at the time (“but they wouldn’t do it”), when Wendy came in with some stock. When Pat looked up five or ten minutes later she noticed the latest two wigs had disappeared from the mannequins. She is mystified about how someone could have slipped in, taken the wigs

and disappeared so quickly without being seen. “I’ve no idea who did it. Not a clue.” The stolen wigs were a mixture of long and short hair ones, either blonde, brunette or black with bits of grey. They were inexpensive, at about $18-$20 each, but the volunteers would love to have them back, Wendy said. “They’re just natural-looking wigs. On the mannequins they just make them look complete,” she said. Any information about the wigs could be given to Wendy (phone 8258008) or the Raglan Police. Rachel Benn

Instead it’s more about sharing the good work being done by a small family-style orphanage with which Stefan’s been closely involved in Nepal – and raising funds for its 11 children who, he says, need only US$2 a day to survive. That’s all it takes to house, feed and educate long-term the orphans of the Blessed Child Welfare Home, he says. “And for me it’s the most important thing (to do) in my life at the moment.” Stefan’s nearing the end of a six-month stay in New Zealand, most of which he’s spent at Solscape “woofing” or working for his keep by cleaning and putting his cabinet-making skills to good use. He and a German friend came to Raglan to surf for five days back in April and Stefan stayed on. “I got stuck here … it’s so nice, so beautiful.” The 27-year-old’s been travelling around the world on a bicycle, starting last year from his hometown of Dresden. For seven months he biked throughout 13 countries including Eastern Europe, Turkey and Iran. From Iran he transported his bike to Nepal, went trekking with a friend, then headed to the orphanage he’d heard about in the little village of Dhapakhel next to Kathmandu. “I wanted to do something good with my journey,” he says of his time spent at the Welfare Home as one of several German volunteers.

Over the coming weeks Raglan Area School will be publishing a series of articles to share their experiences, celebrate their learning and talk about the opportunities they offer their students.

RAGLAN DENTAL CLINIC Nepalese Orphans: Stefan Utke (centre) and some of the Napalese children he is currently raising funds for. And while he’s carried on with his pre-arranged travel plans, Stefan’s determined to return to the orphanage soon with the funds and motivation to really help make a difference. The non-profit orphanage is run by “parents” Bal and his wife Sharmila – from a small mountain village themselves – who have two young children of their own to add to the family of orphans, ranging in age from six to a now 18-yearold aspiring to university-level education. Some of the kids have one parent who is too poor to support them, and working on the land in other villages. The children all have “tragic” stories to tell, says Stefan, but don’t really talk much about how they ended up on the street. They’re just grateful to be cared

With a roll of over 430 students from year levels 0 to 13, the school is large enough to have the advantages of a range of specialist teachers and facilities, yet small enough to retain the flexibility and pastoral support individual students need. for and schooled, at a cost of US$15 each a month. The orphanage occupies a large rental home and was set up recently by a fellow German who’s organised a support team behind him, Stefan explains. It’s run as a registered organisation affiliated to the Social Welfare Council Nepal but gets no support from the Nepalese government, depending entirely on help and donations from other countries. It operates just like a really big family, he adds, and while Stefan was there he learnt to cook good Nepalese food – rice, lentils and curries – alongside Bal. Now he’s keen to put into practise those new-found cooking skills, at the same time engender interest in and support for the work of an orphanage that currently survives on

the goodwill of Austrian and Australian sponsors. Stefan admits he’s a bit nervous about next week’s benefit evening, his first ever, but reckons he can pull it off because it’s such a worthy cause. “Every single dollar counts,” he says. No-one knows how lucky they are, he adds, more than the 11 young Nepalese orphans who relish their chance to go to school – the “AVM Higher Secondary School and Future Stars High School” – and to get a good start in life after all. Stefan’s Nepalese night is Thursday August 14 at 6pm. So he knows how many to cater for, please book through Solscape 825 8268 or text Stefan 021 085 40876. Cost: $15pp. Edith Symes

students enjoy some special advantages: • A continuity in their education avoiding the disruption of starting new schools at intermediate and secondary levels. • A wide cross section of ages which provide significant leadership opportunities for senior students and confidence building relationships for juniors. • Primary level students have access to specialised staff and facilities usually only available for secondary students. Our most recent Education Review Office report (April 2014) highlighted many of our strengths, with comments such as “staff who bring experience and commitment to promoting positive outcomes

for students”, “broad networks of support between the school and its community”, “effective teaching practices where students were meaningfully engaged in their learning”.
