This letter is to inform the Raglan community and wider public, of the temporary closure of the Pipiwharauroa Walk/Cycle Track (from Kawhia Road carpark to the summit of the Wharauroa Plateau). This closure is from 1st August to 20th October, due to lambing season. Disturbance by track users at this time can result in the mis-mothering and loss of lambs. The closure of walking tracks during lambing season is a common practice. At this time the Waikato District Council for legal reasons are unable to provide a process, and support for our request. This is despite numerous requests over the last 2 years. We would appreciate co-operation and respect from our community and the wider public in regard to this matter, also thanks to Clint Baddley for his support. Any queries are welcomed. Clint chases fourth term Ruapuke gears but rivals fall by wayside for city-speed internet
I
ndustrious Raglan ward councillor Clint Baddeley was this week looking in line for an easier campaign this time around as he tries for his fourth three-year term on Waikato District Council.
But while his two closest rivals for the Raglan ward seat in 2010 have both told the Chronicle they won’t be standing again, a week’s a long time in politics – as the saying goes – and another strong candidate or two could still conceivably emerge before nominations close on Friday week. Clint this week confirmed his nomination for a fourth stint, saying he’d worked hard for the Raglan community as their councillor for the last nine years “and it would be an honour to continue” for another three. At the same time Malibu Hamilton, who with strong environmentalist backing polled only 23-odd votes fewer than Clint last time around, was revealing he wouldn’t be standing again “due to current commitments”. And former Raglan ward councillor Matt Holl – who also polled well in the four-way battle for the Raglan ward seat last
time around – confirmed to the Chronicle this week he too was flagging it away. He said life was too precious and he only contested the seat in 2010 because of a “mangled attempt” at producing a Raglan structure plan which disestablished a community-driven ‘Raglan Naturally’ planning process he’d helped facilitate. With Malibu and Matt out of the running, the only real threat to Clint in the upcoming elections could come from former community board chairman Peter Storey. Peter was eyeing the Raglan ward seat last time around after what he termed a sixyear “apprenticeship” on the community board, but in the end opted out over his concerns that he might split the vote and that neither Clint nor he would get the job. However at the same time Peter flagged that “I will probably be going up for the councillor’s job next time around”. He was non-committal on his intentions, though, when contacted by the Chronicle this week. “I can’t give you a definitive answer yet, sorry – I am waiting to see who puts their hands up,” he said. Alan Vink, who did not get
back to the Chronicle, is a possible though unlikely candidate after polling lowest of the four candidates last time around – even if he was still only 100 votes shy of Clint’s tally. He’s already confirmed he’s standing again for the community board, and as current board deputy chairman may be eyeing the chairman’s job which Rodger Gallagher has flagged he will vacate. Though they won’t be going up against Clint again, both Matt Holl and Malibu Hamilton have signalled they will retain an interest in council affairs. Matt says he is thinking seriously about standing for the six-person community board, while Malibu says he’ll “continue to seek cultural, environmental and social justice for the community as I have done for many years as a voice outside council”. uapuke residents have long wanted better internet, or even the option of getting it – and look set to do so now they’re contributing to the installation of two wireless repeater masts in their remote coastal environment. While it comes at an all-up cost of $15,000 the new wireless service will be as fast as the fibreoptic business connections in the cities, says Ruapuke local Simon Thomson on whose property one mast will possibly be placed. It’s “pretty exciting”, Simon told the Chronicle this week, to think technology in the countryside could now catch up to that of the cities. “We’re all chipping in to get it,” he added of the 15 or so households keen to come on board, and many will be able to ditch Telecom altogether when they hook up to Wanna Wifi. Wanna Wifi is a Waikatoowned mobile internet service provider (ISP) which took off in Raglan back in December 2010, and it will subsidise the Ruapuke installation to the tune of $9000 to make it commercially viable, says managing director Jason Brand. “We try and give something back to people as well.” Ruapuke residents will raise the rest themselves while also applying
to Meridian Community Trust for a grant, says Simon. “Wireless makes sense (here),” he explains, “where it will never be viable to install physical cable over such large distances, let alone keep up with urban delivery speeds.” Ruapuke residents have long been frustrated at not getting a high-speed internet service, and there have been few options,” says Simon. “Archaic dial-up, fickle cellular or slow response satellite for between $120 and $150 per month have been the only options – until now.” Edith Symes

Whaingaroa Estuary: A view from both sides The estuary is an essential part of the Whaingaroa Harbour we hold so dear. At this merging point of land and sea is a thriving ecosystem crucial to the health of our wider environment. With views from both sides, two properties on opposite sides of the inner harbour are now on the market and you could have your own stunning view of the estuary. On one side is a property overlooking the tranquil Kaitoke Bay. Moving to Hamilton to be closer to family, Eddie, also known as Captain Pugwash on Raglan radio says, “it’s a lot to be leaving behind.” With the water so close, you can meander down to the boardwalk and enjoy the frolicking Tui’s or take your kayak/SUP down for a leisurely day on the water. “Living here has been so wonderful but if somebody else gets to enjoy it then we are happy,” said Kit.
Every season is so different to previous years. This has been a dry winter. You notice on the main road, the maize fields are being power harrowed. Last year they couldn’t get a tractor of any type onto that land. Our soil is dry and warming, and that’s exciting for all gardeners, causing seed germination and early plant growth. I am currently watering raised beds and hanging baskets. Take up the challenge and plant your early potatoes in garden warm spots. If you haven’t already got them in, peas, carrots, lettuce and beetroot can be tried as well. Veges ready now are my parsnips, carrots, leeks and lettuce from under cloches, and the usual spinach, brassicas and silver beet. My broad beans have flowering tops. Black (for warmth) seedling boxes can start your saved tomato seeds, plus more lettuce and beetroot. It is too early for corn, pumpkins, cucumbers and zucchinis. Work up your garden top soil, cultivate, hoe, to aerate and stop weed germination before you start planting in weeks ahead. Flower gardens are the same, work the ground around your existing plants for they will flower for some time yet. Stocks, poppies, pansies, violas, primulas, cinerarias, polyanthus and spring bulb flowers are all at their best now. Seed sowing of marigolds, petunias, begonias, salvias and asters etc can be given thought. We may be in for frosts, but we take that risk. Raglan has a great micro climate that is a few degrees warmer than inland, so we take advantage of that. Lemon trees are loaded with fruit, and may need some picking to relieve the strain on the plant. Now is the time for new fruit trees to be bought and planted. New moon is on the 7th August with the full moon on the 21st August. Seedling planting days are from the 12th to the 20th August. It is not too late to plant shallots and garlic. Rhubarb, if it has been left alone for a few years can be split at the crown, and separate new plantings made. Lastly if you are keen, start a kumara on a sunny window sill; planted in moist sand, it will quickly sprout runners that you can later cut off and plant in your garden.

enthusiast’s backyard, is the gate way to Chris Meek’s gallery and studio.
Not too dissimilar to the tardis, Chris’ studio holds more worlds, lives and stories than you can imagine. Working up 20 years of creating at his Cross Street studio, Chris is as much a story teller as he is an artist. Led by serendipitous interactions and ‘the search’ for what he calls ‘the perfect piece’, it would seem not by choice Chris works away in his studio. It is his journey, a journey I, as a viewer, feel lucky to be a part of. When you walk with Chris through his world at the studio you immediately become a traveller in his experiences. A collector of old parts,
Chris talks of each piece holding its own story, connecting with these stories Chris breathes life back into them, a new life. From the collecting of materials to the construction of a work, a story belongs to them all. Juxtaposing harsh ‘reality’ with humour Chris wins his audience through the continual repertoire of daily life. New Work promises to be a mix of the old and new with a current focus on a selection of materials procured from the infamous 1980’s New Zealand film Smash Palace. Chris Meek’s New Work exhibition will be held at 21 Cross Street, Raglan. Spanning both The Studeo Gallery and Chris Meek’s Gallery from the 16th of August to the 6th of September, the opening will be held on Friday the 16th 5.30 – 8.30 pm. All are welcome. Brigid Allan

This week the Chronicle talks to well known artist Aaron Kereopa. Image: Tracie Heasman. Describe your practice? I make art using surfboards. What are you working on at the moment? I have just finished working on my exhibition in Queenstown for the 2nd of August, at Toi o Tahuna Gallery. It will run for about 4 weeks. The themes I ran are just always about waves and ocean stuff, of late the sound of wind, in the form of flutes(koauau) flying overhead. And next I’m working with a property developer to produce a fancy door and things riddled with my styles. Are you from an artistic family? All my family are creatively inclined, there are weavers, surfers, language teachers, film/media freak, a bro carving up mines in Oz, one carving up his bank balance. Our daughter draws a good easter bunny, with flowers. When did you decide to pursue a creative career? I made a move toward being a fulltime artist 12 years ago while working at Jupiters Casino on the Gold Coast as a dish pig. Good job though. Handed in my 2 weeks notice and its been a rollercoaster ride ever since. Who are you influenced by? Everybody I come in contact with influences the work I do. Every experience I have had and am having, do too. I like to remember times in my life where I did or witnessed an extreme activity or event, that messed with the senses and I conjur up the same emotion while Im working. Good stuff gets made there. The best piece of advice you ever got? You’re dumb! Give up! It won’t work. It never will! And inspiration happens while youre working. And never give up on things you love to do. Ever. Ive been given heaps of advice good and the bad; Best and worst thing about being an artist? Best things are meeting people I would never have met if I didnt make art. And I have a greater appreciation for other art practitioners and their work. Making new art. The worst is bridging the gaps between sales. Its filled with risk and uncertainty. If you weren’t an artist you’d probably be .....? I would like to have been an archeologist digging up fossils, relics and lost civilisations, would be awesome. But more like Indiana Jones. I would have made a great farmer too. What possession would you like to save in a fire? I would have saved the fire extinguisher. Then my canoes, then my surfboard. Not the art ones. If money were no object what frivilous non essential would you buy for yourself? I’d buy a giraffe and take it to my daughter’s kindy, Matapihi for morning talk. What four famous people dead or alive would you invite for dinner? I’d invite Quade Cooper from the Queensland Reds cos he’s a great athlete everyone loves to hate but he’s a Kiwi, Sandra Bullock cos she’d be funny and easy on the eye. Jack Johnson the muso can entertain and Michael Parekowhai can be our eccentric art guru. Your best traveling experience? Ujung Genteng, Java Barat, Indonesia and Big Island, Hawaii Are you a dog or a cat person? I used to love cats until they chowed down on the birds, Hate! I have a dog but she’ll be the last one I’ll raise. She does nothing. Do you have recurring dreams? if so what about? I dream of flying around much like Iron Man. Thrusting power out my hands and feet and surfing in the air with no surfboard. Doing massive re-entries off skate bowls and buildings. Where can we see your work? POSSUM AND RODENT CONTROL – POISON WARNING Wildlife Contractors LTD wishes to advise that a ground-based possum and rodent control operation will be taking place to keep possum and rodents numbers under control. This operation will be conducted as a part of the Waikato Regional Councils HALO project. Areas covered Bridal Veil Falls Project HALO sector is located approximately 20 kilometres South West of Hamilton city. The area incorporates three privately owned properties. Poisoning methods, poison used and nature of poison: Possum habitats will be targeted using Feratox encapsulated baits and Pindone in bait stations and will be attached to trees, and fence posts. Feratox capsules (dyed green) to be placed in a peanut paste inside biodegradable blue bait bags and bait stations. The public is warned not to enter these areas and not to remove carcasses or baits. Baits are dangerous to people and dogs.
