Swim Club seeking greater pool use

T encouraging more use of its he Raglan Swim Club is

pool to prevent a disaster from happening.

When no-one is around, children are jumping the fence and swimming under the pool cover, says club committee member Hinemoa Rossi. Just recently, six kids were caught in the pool, with their skateboards, underneath the pool cover. “The next time it might be someone floating underneath the cover when we take it off,” she says. The club wants more members so people don’t swim in the pool illegally and to help protect the property. It also requires more volunteers to take swimming lessons, lane swimming sessions and play sessions to keep the pool open more often and so that the community can swim in it responsibly. The club recently lost Mel Brydon, who “single-handedly ran the swim club and lessons,” says Hinemoa. Currently there are just seven committee members who take care of the organisation and swim sessions. “It would be really nice if we didn’t Dear Editor, I am angry and rather than rant and rave to little avail in the Raglan District Council Office, I am putting my concerns on paper. After being away for a week, I arrived home to see that my road had been sprayed. This was obvious as the grass on the berne and in the drains was burnt by the poison. This ugly sight is a feature of roads throughout the Waikato District (great for our "Clean Green" image??) and it concerns me. On the one hand, we pay rates to have a contractor spray the road verges with poison that enters our waterways and ocean, and on the other hand we pay rates to the Waikato Regional Council to clean up our waterways and protect the bio-diversity, the fauna and flora of the region. Does that make any sense to you? This was going through my mind as I pulled up to my house, to discover that not only had the road verge been sprayed but also the drain on my property berne.

have to be here five days a week.” If the pool isn’t open due to a lack of volunteers, children jump the fence. “We are figuring out how to police it,” says Hinemoa. Last season the covers had been ripped, beer bottles thrown in the pool and impromptu parties held there in the weekend. A CCTV camera is due to be put up – the signs have already been ordered. No-trespassing signs will also be erected. “The public liability is huge. It costs $25 to join the club, which allows you to have $2 swims from November to April. All the revenue goes back to the club. The club also hosts the annual bridge to bridge swim as a fundraiser. It is also looking at other ways to keep the pool occupied and earning money, such as hiring it out to fitness groups or learning scuba diving. Anyone who can help out with the swim club can contact the committee members by email: raglanswimclub@ gmail.com. Volunteers are required to know first aid and be reliable. Inger Vos Despite having two signs that state "No Spray Zone" that were put up by the District Council when I requested that my berne not be included in the spraying free-for-all frenzy. Both signs are visible from the road. This is not the first time that this has occured, despite the signs. I am angry. I grow an organic garden and have done so for thirty years. I feel that my life style is compromised. That despite being a rate payer, despite doing the right thing and contacting the District Council that I do not want to be sprayed, despite having signs on my property that indicate this, I am not being heard by the Waikato District Council. I am at my wits end and do not know what else to do. Is there anyone else who has similar concerns? Perhaps a solution would be that we can opt in to being sprayed rather than the present system of having to opt out--which is not working? It may even save rate payers some money. There must have been a queue for the shower in the Loten household in Raglan on Saturday afternoon. Dr Mike and Joan, their children Sam and George, and Joan’s sister, Maureen Glassey from Auckland, all took part in races in the Raglan Karioi Trail, which went down as the muddiest yet in the three years it’s been running. Most of the competitors crossed the finish line with muddy shoes, mud all up their legs, muddy butts, muddy hands and arms and muddy faces. The weather was good for the runners, but not so great for the volunteers who had to brave the wet and cold conditions, says organiser Francois Mazet. Between them, the Lotens took home two medals: Sam, 10, and Dr Mike won the 24km team event as Big Fred and Little Ted and Joan won the 40-59-year-old category (second overall) in the women’s 24km race. “It’s our favourite running race,” says Dr Mike. “Running on our local mountain through beautiful bush; the vibe is friendly and supportive from the runners and volunteers. “Francois has created the best post-run activities: a kids race, free beer (sponsored by Good George) and sausages, generous spot prizes. Fantastic!” Francois says the level of competiveness in the men’s race was “absolutely amazing” this year. “The fight for the podium was quite intense.” The overall winner of the 24km race, which sees competitors twice reach the summit of Mt Karioi, was five-times Goat Alpine Adventure Run champion Sjors Corporaal, from Galatea, Bay of Plenty. His time of 2.49.54 was the fastest time in the history of the event. A share-milker and pig hunter, Sjors is used to running in mountains with pigs strapped to his shoulders, Francois says. Sjors says the Karioi race is nothing like he has ever done before. “All the mud and the roots and a hell of a lot of climbing … you are just tested the whole time.” Chris Morrissey, from Tauranga, who came third and won the Karioi Trail the last two years, says there was a lot more competition this year and it was “a good battle”. “The last two years it was quite dry. This year it was totally different.” Carl Fischer, who came in fourth place, says the race was “epic, so steep and treacherous”. “This reminds me of the Kaimai Goat (a 20km in the Kaimai Mamaku Forest Park, Bay of Plenty) but on steroids.” Raglan’s Tom Welby, who recently won the Tarawera Trail Marathon and was the local favourite to win the Karioi Trail, came fifth. The fastest woman to do the 24km was Dawn Tuffery of Hamilton. Dawn and Sjors each won a Suunto watch, sponsored by Trek ’n’ Travel, for their effort. The race is based on the Swann family farm on Karioi Rd, with three generations of the family taking part, either as volunteers or competitors. Mason and Cody Swann were among the 24 kids taking part in the 2km Mini Karioi Trail. Francois says it was good to see some of the sponsors entering the race, like Dave Peacocke, in the 10km race, and Matt Taggart, who entered the team event.

He says the 10km race was introduced this year as an opportunity for runners to test their metal on the mountain, to see if they can do it. Some competitors who enter don’t realise that trail running means the terrain is such that you won’t actually be able to run a lot of the time, he says. Co-organiser Rachel Brown says trail running is becoming more popular and the Karioi event is becoming a bit bigger every year.

She says from this year’s event there will be “a whole bunch of people who will want to beat Sjors”. “The thing they love, when they come in all exhausted, is all the people who helped out along the trail, they’re amazed that there is a drinks station at the top of the mountain, and they like that it’s not commercial … it’s grassroots and a bit of mud.” Inger Vos

aglan Community Radio sure does cater for all ages and tastes these days. Take the Peanut Butter Jammin’ Time show, for instance, put together on Wednesday nights by a trio of local schoolboys who squabble and take prank calls, and who sometimes play the kind of music they know will annoy their fathers. “I played Anthrax for my Dad,” 13-year-old Dughall Eadie told the Chronicle wickedly last week of the heavy metal American band which many listeners might be able to take only in small doses. Sven Seddon, a year older, will tend more to mainstream tastes like Pink Floyd or Kings of Leon but Jack Kirkwood, the same age as Dughall, is into “Pop Goes Punk” which sounds about as far away from his Dad’s “country” leanings as you could possibly get. Whatever eclectic mix the three friends come up with – either for their Raglan Area School mates who tuned in specially last week from their end-of-year overnight camp at the local Kokiri Centre, or for their long-suffering parents at home – they’ve loved the past few months as aspiring radio DJs. “We like chilling and playing music,” says Dughall of their 6-7pm time slot in the studio at the town hall. “We’re excited at least three days before (the show),” he adds.

While he admits they were a bit nervous to start with – “it’s a big thing”— mastering the technicalities of the studio equipment is no problem. They’re part of a school band called ‘Majestic Unicorns’ and got some experience last year while recording one of their songs. The challenge is more about talking on air, they reckon. “And not arguing between songs,” Sven adds. The trio aren’t the only young DJs on Raglan Community Radio. Fifteen-yearold Hamilton Boys High student Jack Douglass-Dobson plays his Retro Beats slot just before the Jammin’ Time show, focusing on 80s and 90s instrumental rap. “It’s rap music with the words removed,” he explains, “leaving just the cool beats.” Artists include Dr Dre, Biggy Smalls, Cyprus Hill, Mobb Deep, Apache, Big Pun and The Crooklyn Dodgers. “I like to play my music loud and I like to share these beats with people,” he says. “I also throw in some history about the rap musicians and their albums.” Then there’s The Chris & Tracie Show which comes just after the Jammin’ trio have done their thing. “We’re actually not that consistent,” Tracie Heasman confesses, nine months into the show she puts together with Chris Wallis. Neither are they convinced anyone actually listens, she laughs – not that it stops these two “soccer mums”, who look forward to getting out of the house each week and playing their kind of music.

“Our favourite theme so far was our 80s night which was a bit of childhood reminiscing for both of us.” Another show with a difference is Marama Café, Raglan’s only bicultural/ bilingual radio slot. Presenter Ngaronoa Renata says she really enjoys the challenge of the Tuesday afternoon show, which has her switching between Maori and English conversation. Ngaronoa gets Maori/Pacific musicians – from Cornerstone Roots or Green Fire Islands for instance – talking. “I try and pick up on what’s happening locally (in arts and music), or what would be of interest to our young people going between the concerts in Wellington and Auckland.” She recently interviewed two of the troupe from contemporary Auckland dance company Black Grace while they were in Raglan, and included Stan Walker in her playlist just ahead of his appearance in town to perform at Raglan’s Christmas in the Park. Station manager Aaron Mooar says he’s welcomed the variety of new presenters – from the quirky to the more serious – on community radio this year. And he reckons that once they can operate the studio equipment he pretty much leaves them to it. “I want locals to develop their own shows,” he explains of his hands-off approach. "If you want to create your own show and become a DJ email studio@ raglanradio.com". Edith Symes

Wired with 4G for summer holidays

During the last Christmas holiday period, Vodafone customers gobbled up 518 Terabytes of data on the network – up 91 per cent during the same period the year before. This equated to more than one billion selfies uploaded, between December 23, 2014 and January 7, 2015.

“We’re expecting those figures to climb even higher this summer holiday,” said Vodafone’s Technology Director, Tony Baird. “Kiwis want to be connected no matter where they are and smartphones, laptops and tablets are at the heart of that.” Vodafone’s been investing heavily in its network in the lead up to Christmas, spending more than $1.5 million dollars upgrading cell sites around the country’s

most popular holiday hotspots. New 4G capacity has been added to the Raglan site to ensure continued connectivity in the area over the holiday period. Last Christmas, Whangamata, Whitianga, Matarangi, Pauanui and Hahei were some of the country’s most connected spots, based on data usage at popular holiday locations.

Raglan woman presented with bravery award

R

aglan zookeeper Sarah Jones has been recognised for showing bravery after a tiger attack that killed a fellow keeper at Hamilton Zoo in September. Sarah, who is a rhino keeper at the zoo, received a District Commander

Commendation Award at the Waikato District Pay Parade at the Hamilton Gardens on Wednesday last week, alongside work colleague Monique Alexander. Waikato Police District Prevention Manager Inspector Kent Holdsworth, who presented the award, said Sarah performed in a “heroic manner”. “Miss Jones's actions in distracting the animal with its favourite toy and luring it away from the scene, and then locked it away, showed a cool presence of mind and prevented further risk to members of staff and others in general. Her actions in such trying circumstances are recognised as being worthy of recognition.” Samantha Kudeweh, 43, was killed by Sumatran tiger Oz, inside an enclosure at the zoo on September 20. Sarah, who has just returned from a red panda zoo keepers’ field trip in Nepal, says she is unable to comment on the attack which is still being investigated by WorkSafe NZ, the Ministry for Primary

Industries and the Coroner's office. A statement, on behalf of the two women, was released by the Hamilton City Council, which owns the zoo. It said the two were “very humbled by the recognition”. “Sam's death was an extremely traumatic and distressing experience for the both of us. We have been trained in how to deal with an incident like this and when we discovered Sam we put that training into effect. “With a number of investigations still under way we don't think it's appropriate to discuss the details of that day any further. We all miss Sam greatly each and every day, but due to the brilliant zoo team she created we are a strong and supportive zoo family at this tragic and devastating time.” Sarah is the founder of Tusk and Horn Wildlife Trust, which is dedicated to raising awareness in New Zealand of elephant and rhinoceros species and the conservation projects that help to protect them.

Students planter boxes add colour to CBD The Hineora Programme at Raglan Area School is offered as an Alternative Education course for Year 9-10 female students. The programme aims to develop a successful learning path with various courses including: food technology, digital technology, outdoor education, art and more. Some of the art projects have involved creating a mural for the kaumatua and decorating pou for the school gardens. For their Term 3 project five students got to design and paint planter boxes for the Raglan Placemakers Committee as part of the ‘Place Making’ initiative. Committee members Lisa Thomson and Bob Macleod approached Bronwyn Haitana about utilising the art skills at RAS for various Place Making Initiatives. Bronwyn then coordinated with Whaea Jeanette who has been guiding the girls through a year of art projects. The girls worked together to create four planter boxes, two which have been placed in front of Roll Up and The Yot Club, another sits outside of the Lion’s Club, and the fourth awaits its new home. “We got to paint the things that represent Raglan to us, like Karioi, the ocean and the moon,” said Vision. When asked about their favourite part of making the boxes, Thalia pointed out the teamwork they experienced through the process of creating each box. As for carrying on with their art careers, Charlie has plans to build on what she has learned, while the rest of girls hope to explore the other great classes such as the cooking and Maori. Keep an eye out for the beautiful planter boxes along the footpaths in the CBD. For more on The Hineora Programme contact Raglan Area School. K Puriri

Emily inspired by artist

E likes to draw cats and has quite a collection mily Stockton loves to draw. She especially

of feline illustrations at home.

This year at Te Uku School, Emily explored a new drawing technique and discovered she had a talent for intricate black and white drawings inspired by the work of well known local artist and designer Denise Fort. Denise Fort visited Te Uku School this year and talked to year 5 and 6 students about her imaginative art and the process involved. The students then created their own original designs with extraordinary detail. "Denise is a really good artist says Emily. "I really enjoyed this kind of art using Denise's ideas. I got the idea for the river from her but the tree was from a design I did a few years ago" Emily says she was surprised to have been selected but very happy....."like when you release endorphin's" she said. Raglan Ink snapped up the design for their RBD cover this year. "Another stand out design was from Keira Hartstone" says Jacqui from the Chronicle. Her artwork will be featured at the beginning of the residential section.

Christmas present idea: 2016 Panorama of Raglan calendar

T calendar has

he 2016 Panorama of Raglan just been printed. Copies are at the Bookshop, Trade Aid, Bow St Gallery and the Herbal Dispensary. The price is still $15, as it was when first produced seven years ago. The calendar again has 28 pages with 13 large photos and many smaller pictures, most taken by Raglan Ramblers on their weekly walks. It includes photos of the area between Aotea to the south, the summit of the divi to the east and this August page, showing the entrance to the harbour; little wonder that the

early explorers failed to spot it. Each year the calendar helps the Friends of Wainui Reserve fund their work at the reserve. In 2015 the group bought a new weedeater to ease the task of maintaining the reserve. Singing works up appetites at A Taste of Christmas T

he singing at Friday night’s A Taste of Christmas – Kai, Carols and Good Times was such a hit that the audience had to be told several times at the end of the night to go and eat. Organiser Colin Chung says for their last set, Waikato men’s barbershop chorus group Mighty River Harmony asked the audience to join them in singing some carols and “there were people who didn’t want to stop singing”. “We had to go and ask them to eat which was really great.” A Taste of Christmas was the combination of two previous events in Raglan: Kai and Carols by St Peter’s Anglican Church and the Christmas dinner on Christmas Day held in the Raglan Town Hall. Colin, who was an organiser of the past Christmas dinners and who sings in Mighty River Harmony, says there no longer appeared to be a need to put on the dinner, which was for Raglan families who couldn’t afford Christmas or for residents who were on their own, because the “people who came weren’t even from town”. And they weren’t into singing carols, he says. “They just wanted to eat!” But he still wanted to put on something for local residents to do around Christmas time: “Not just eat but put on a concert.” Mighty River Harmony has always been part of Kai and Carols, he says. “So all we did was add on. Some people don’t like going to church so the town hall was added on.”

Waikato District Plan

Variation 13 to Plan Change 14 to the Franklin section of the Waikato District Plan Private Plan Change 12 – Rangatahi Peninsula, Raglan Land Company

The evening began at St Peter’s Church, with carols by Mighty River Harmony and “Sean Ellison and his ladies”. Then the audience followed Pumpkin the donkey and Minty the token sheep (a poodlelabrador retriever cross) across the road to the town hall for a further concert by Mighty River Harmony, Raglan Area School band The Majestic Unicorns and Raglan singing group Slipped Disc. “It was good music,” says Colin. Both the church and the town hall was standing room only. “It was a mixed group in the crowd. A good cross section, and a lot of people carrying babies.” Colin says a group of about 20 volunteers helped decorate the hall and prepare the food. There was a sausage sizzle outside the town hall, which was overseen by Pumpkin the donkey who got many pats. A group of volunteers had made some 300 or 400 sandwiches that day, and there was a carvery with ham and roast beef, along with savouries and sweets. “There was loads of food. A lot of people donated cakes and slices. “There wasn’t anyone who went without. It was dinner, but it was meant to be supper!” Colin says he had got a lot of good feedback and the whole event had a really good feeling. “It was inclusiveness: Not just the food or the music but the atmosphere.” Inger Vos
