people is the ability to control their own attention.”

To the Editor Summer crowds are here and I am questioning the commercialisation of our waves for profit. While I whole heartedly support the RAS Surf Academy (I donated a new Mini Mal to the programme a dozen years ago) who surf the point, and the local sea dogs initiative for young ones on the beach; both are not for profit programmes and involve mostly locals. I had a surf on the weekend at the beach with a group of 30 or so, on a lovely little right hander. Out of the 30 surfers, eight or so were frothing grommets who had family pay for a “coaching session” with a a surf coach. I did not see any of the kids from local families who regularly surf the point or beach in the group, possibly due to the high cost involved. It is my view that when people pay for something their expectations increase e.g. Pay money = more waves…thus I was dropped in on by at least half of the group in that one session. So I thought of some questions to ask the community through this letter: Should paid customers compete for waves or should the coach find a less crowded wave to conduct business e.g. up the beach or Ruapuke?

Should you be teaching protocols and surf etiquette first e.g. paddling up the inside might be OK at Piha or the Mount (Maunganui) but...? If local families can’t afford your fee, should you reserve a spot or two for local grommets to get your expertise? Will you use the points if they are firing to make a profit? Will the board riders, fishing club or Poihakena Marae get a koha out of your profits? What is stopping more out of towners doing the same business? Will there be more people doing “Surf Coaching” in our waves next summer? Would this be tolerated at Whanga Bar? Since Raglan was showcased to the world in the movie, Endless Summer, locals have gotten used to Sven, Wilbour and the likes sharing our waves. Many backpackers come to Raglan to learn to surf and although the beach is full of soft tops in the summer, very rarely do these imports compete for waves out the back. I only question locals being disadvantaged for these out of towners’ advantage. Not being a hater or attacking anyone specifically, I am throwing this out for discussion. Simon Thompson, Raglan

Board seeks solution for parking BARBARA KURIGER Raglan this summer, and how that could be turned into a long-term solution. Roger said council was currently discussing with owners the viability of leasing an undeveloped site on Wi Neera St as an overflow car-parking area. The discussion of whether that would be for employees and business owners or visitors could come later, he said. He said parking on the medium strip had caused a number of accidents in the past to the point that it was considered unsafe. The community board discussed the option of placing more rocks as bollards along the medium strip or creating a space for people to enjoy, but, in the meantime, Roger suggested putting up signs to say it was a no-parking zone for cars. He said motorbikes should be allowed to use the medium strip because they were more manoeuvrable and otherwise would take up an entire car park. A parking warden would in Raglan for four days of the week in the height of summer, he said, to help with parking issues, and the council would also have the presence of an animal control officer – given that dogs were allowed back in the town centre – who would have the same powers as a parking warden. A traffic counter would be placed on the main road, probably near the BP service station, to find out how much traffic was coming into Raglan in the weekends, Roger said. The council would also be providing signs to point visitors to public parking in James St. The community board agreed with council bylaw proposals to remove a boat trailer park at the wharf to make room for four new car parks and the addition of a disability car park outside Orca Restaurant and Bar. On Tuesday last week, the community board moved to include a two-hour time limit in Bankart St in their submission on the Waikato District Council Public Places Bylaw, which regulates a range of activities that happens in public places (roads, streets and parks). The council is seeking input from the community on parking in particular, and Bankart St currently has no time limit on how long vehicles can be parked there. The community board has also asked for a time limit of 48 hours on boats and trailers at the wharf, and stated a desire to work with council on a temporary parking solution for the summer. A report on Raglan CBD parking was presented to the community board by Matt Holl and Kelly Murphy. They had conducted a Raglan Business Parking Survey to seek community input into the town’s parking issues. The survey was delivered to 70 businesses, of which 66 responded. Matt said the point of the survey was to get some feedback from those who owned a business or worked in town because they would get to see any problems every day and might be able to come up with some ways to resolve them. He said the results of the survey would progress into a community consultation process to find a parking solution. “The end game is we have a parking problem and we need to look at a solution.” The survey results showed that there were some 120 vehicles owned by business owners and their employees that took up parking in and near the town centre.

The report stated that the community board might wish to look into the option of a temporary staff parking area, one that could be part or fully funded by the council and community board, so that there was more parking available for visitors. Kelly said time limits in Bankart St were needed to free up the parking spaces that were currently being used by business owners and their employees. Bankart St was also now considered a business area, she said, and therefore should have parking restrictions such as in Bow St, Wainui Rd, Wallace St and Wi Neera St. However, she said, the survey indicated that many business owners thought that a one-hour time limit was not sufficient for visitors to have a meal at a cafe and have a bit of a shop around. Kelly said Wi Neera St would be best used as a parking area for businesses. Being narrow, “we don’t want a huge turnaround in that street”. She said another option for parking by people who worked in the town was the Raglan RSA – it costs $25 to join the club and club members have use of its car park. Councillor Clint Baddeley questioned why workers were not using the parking on Stewart St or James St, as it was only a short walk to the main business area. “That’s laziness. During the week, particularly, there is no-one there.” Respondents to the survey also suggested that perhaps a change in mindset was needed. “Need to encourage walking, biking and public transport,” said one. Council regulatory manager Roger MacCulloch, who attended the community board meeting, said the review of the Public Places Bylaw was an opportunity for the community board to highlight any changes needed regarding parking requirements. He said the council was also working on how more parking could be achieved in

time limit on parking in Bankart St is being sought by the Raglan Community Board as it looks at ways to deal with the traffic congestion in the town in the summer months.

Police numbers to double over NYE Raglan could expect to have twice as many police officers for New Year’s Eve this year, after complaints of drinking in the streets and fighting during the last summer break. Sergeant Neil Mouncher spoke to the Raglan Community Board on Tuesday last week, and addressed concerns over the lack of policing numbers and lack of action over alcohol bans the previous year. He said from December 28 to January 10 there would be an extra 16 officers on duty at various times in Raglan, to help the three local officers. On New Year’s Eve there will be about 10 officers on duty – this compares with five last year.

“We were well under done last year in relation to numbers. We lost staff to the Coromandel,” said Neil. “We were chasing our tails, keeping kids in check who were running back and forwards across the bridge with alcohol.” There will be a sergeant based in Raglan from December until the end of January, he said. The heightened police presence would extend beyond New Year’s Eve, he said, and include an extra seven officers during the Soundsplash Festival, from January 8-10, at Wainui Reserve. Police did not anticipate that there would be any problems at the festival venue. Inger Vos

50s meets on Monday and Thursdays in the Anglican Town Hall from 10am to 11am.

But what would I be letting myself in for, you ask nervously. We over 50's have learnt to join with care and avoid embarrassment. I have found that once in the door of apparently interesting groups it can be difficult to turn round and run. It looks so silly. Don't worry though, the light exercise group is very benign and does not demand any lycra or similar sporty gear. Ladies however tend to avoid skirts and go for some long-legged self presentation. We don't leap around but do sometimes elevate legs or pass the time on machines. The first half hour allows you to choose a piece of equipment like rowing machines or treadmills.

The most popular equipment can be difficult to find free. We are a civilised group and brute force to get what you want is frowned on. Hanging around the desired equipment with a meaningful look is as far as you can go. This happens frequently with the popular rowing machines. Three of them sit side by side positively inviting chatter, forgetting exercise and other impatient users There is a lot of chat, for the first 30 minutes in the first half hour. Alternatively you can much around the main hall for the first half hour doing some floor routines or just turn up for the second half. It costs you $3 a day either way - its the best bargain in town. On Thursdays you can stay on at 11 for tea or coffee with biscuits or even more chatter. Please do try it: might just be your cup of tea. Ian McKissack

The Young Ones A series of Q & A’s with the youth in Raglan

This week the Chronicle caught up with 19-year-old Ashleigh Waitere who is currently studying a Bachelor of Sport Science and Psychology at Waikato University. Tell us what you are involved in right now and how you got there? I am currently involved in running a boot camp and personal training as well as netball and touch. I started personal training as a way to make some extra cash as being a student is very tight, this was a way to put my skills that I am currently learning to use and a chance to help the wider community. This was going really well so I was encouraged to start a fitness group us so that’s where the boot camp comes from which was inspired by a military prep school I was involved in. Was sport/fitness encouraged in your family when you were growing up? Yes, my family was very sporty and participated in what ever was available to us, my step mum also encouraged me as she was the coach of my netball team growing up. What other sports do you enjoy? I play netball and touch, but honestly love playing any sports socially. What advice would you have for young people wanting to excel at sport/health/fitness? My advice would be to seek advice and motivation, its always easier with guidance or a buddy to motivate you, as mental motivation is the biggest barrier for most people. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? Relaxing with a good book in the sun as spare time is always limited for me. Who do you feel inspired by/Who do you look up to? One of my biggest idols are Kayla Itsines a personal trainer and public figure. What’s the benefit of living in Raglan? There are so many, Raglan has beautiful places to enjoy all types of fitness while seeing amazing places and being out in the environment, climbing the mountain, beach runs and work outs, great bus tracks and an amazing waterfall. How could Raglan be improved for it’s youth? More information and fitness groups for youth that are fun and exciting at low cost. The country you would most like to visit? I really would like to visit Monaco as it is said to be one of the healthiest countries in the world. What did you want to be growing up? I wanted to be a doctor so I could fix people. In 10 years I see myself…… Hopefully I will own my own business for sport psychology and will be able to travel the world with athletes training them mentally and physically, girl can dream right? Ashleigh runs a series of bootcamp and fitness classes during the week in Raglan. Check out her Facebook page to keep updated on class time. Search: ‘Ashleigh’s personal training.’

All In A Day’s Work

A series interviewing locals with interesting occupations

Raglan Jane’s home bakery delights going down a treat

Raglan Jane in her baking kitchen.

ou’d think one of the benefits of working Y from home is the chance of the odd lie-in – but not so for Jane Stockton who’s up at

5.30 every weekday morning making a little dough for her family, in one sense, and for the decadent delights she supplies to locals in the other. Anyone who’s grabbed a morning coffee recently from the Roast Office at Te Uku may well have been tempted by her still-warm cinnamon brioches, or savoury scones with caramelised onion and sundried tomato. Or depending on the day the choice may have been between blueberry and lemon brioche or ham and cheese scones, or between caramelised onion and feta scones or moist raspberry and white chocolate ones topped with a thick dusting of icing sugar. “Anything with berries and chocolate flies out the window,” says Jane who’s up making dough before daybreak so she can hand her home-made goodies over to husband Matt a couple of hours later to drop off at Te Uku, en route to his own job as principal of Whatawhata School. The scones are “based on my Mum’s recipe”, Raglan Jane – as she’s known around town and online – told the Chronicle last week. “We had a house cow and had lots of cream,” the former King Country girl explains of her old-fashioned scones with a contemporary twist that transforms them into irresistibly moist muffins-cum-scones. The cream has gone now from Jane’s adapted scone recipe because she doesn’t have a house cow at home out the back of Te Uku, where she and Matt have now lived for nine years. But she does have a flock of happy hens in the yard of their property, which is at the end of a long gravel road and overlooks both rolling green farmland and an upper reach of Whaingaroa harbour. The hens provide “the freshest eggs possible” for some of Jane’s other creations – such as oaty ginger slice, brownies and chocolate chip cookies – which each day grace the counter at Raglan Roast’s original hole-in-the-wall coffee outlet in Volcom Lane. Jane also supplies a Paleo, organic and glutenfree version of the chocolate brownie to The Herbal Dispensary in Wallis Street, plus a gluten-free ginger and coconut slice. She’s kept “pretty busy” three days a week in her baking kitchen – downstairs in the basement as opposed to the family kitchen upstairs – making these

slices and cookies while daughters Emily and Isabelle, aged 11 and 9, are at Te Uku School. Jane was an Otago-qualified food scientist living and commuting to work in Auckland until a decade ago, but reckons her job description has now changed to that of “a from-scratch baker specialising in oldfashioned homestyle baking”. She’s got a website with a link to her Facebook page, and a “gallery” of photos showing all the delectable-looking goodies in her home bakery/ catering line. Opportunity came Jane’s way three years ago soon after the Roast Office opened at Te Uku. Its counters were bare of foodie treats and “I saw a gap in the market,” she says. “I wanted (to make) something easy that tasted great and sold well.” So she did. Being used to making recipes work en masse in food factories turning out the likes of Lisa’s Hummus, or products under the Naked Organics and Delmaine Fine Foods labels, Jane took the initiative and prepared a simple batch of scones for a trial run at the Roast Office. Despite being very casual about it all, she recalls, the staff liked what they tasted and so did “The Don”, Raglan Roast boss Tony Bruce. So she got a licence for her small bakery downstairs and the rest is history. “I will probably have to look at getting another oven – and possibly even a bigger mixer,” she says of the next steps. Outside of Raglan Roast and The Herbal Dispensary, Jane occasionally caters – word-ofmouth – for a few other local customers like Indies downtown and the community-based Te Mauri Tau in Hills Road. Raglan Jane also supplies the new Laroma Espresso Bar in Frankton with her home-made goodies, delivering them on weekly trips to Hamilton for her girls’ gymnastics classes. Meantime this enterprising 43 year old is happy to have a business and a lifestyle in one. “I love the creating,” she enthuses of her self-styled job from home. “It provides an income and keeps me busy and works well within school hours.” Edith Symes

aglan has a rich local history of surfing. From soulful characters to defining moments, we hope to highlight and uncover a big part of Raglan's surfing history that some may not know about. Over the next few columns we'll be introducing The Originals, a crew who have been surfing the points since the late 50's. Raglan we’d searched for places as would throw us clean and peeling waves to run for miles rising, falling then this wild edge with surging walls that seemed to carry all of history they clamoured at the coast in sun-shot mist and foam save only round a point of rocks it drew their waters into full and flaring caverns even gods would dream to sport amongst in early worlds ours was the chance

we took it breathless all the start, working surfaces until we’d nerved ourselves then cut back deep through bottom turns to drive the inside faces broke out flaunting on the hanging crests suspended while our bodies learned a song of ancient mysteries for we are lucky as were any of the young who ever lived and surfed the place into our bones

Shared Health Centre vision: From Left: - MP Barbara Kuriger, Simon O’Connor, Fiona Edwards, Fiona Bolden and Lynne Wilkins

T

he enthusiastic folk behind building a community-owned healthcare facility in Raglan hope that their proposed model could be the way of the future for other rural communities in New Zealand. The West Coast Health Charitable Trust this week presented their vision, Project Build It, to Health Select Committee chairman Simon

O’Connor and MP Barbara Kuriger, who is also the select committee’s deputy chairperson. Barbara says the visit to Raglan was to gain a broader understanding of primary health care in the town and surrounding areas. “We saw a comprehensive proposal. While the Health Select Committee are not responsible for funding, we intend to further

discuss yesterday’s visit in Wellington.” Trust spokesperson Fiona Edwards says the presentation was made with the hope that perhaps the Government could consider the Raglan venture as a pilot scheme for rural community healthcare. “This is beyond just a building,” she says. “It’s a way to create sustainable, affordable and long-term healthcare in rural communities, which have some of the lowest household incomes in New Zealand.” Fiona says the benefit of having a community-owned medical centre is that the community can charge health professionals an affordable rent in return for quality service and low-cost patient fees. Having a bigger medical centre will also enable an accredited teaching practice where trainee and graduate health professionals can gain experience, encouraging more doctors, nurses, physiotherapist, pharmacists and other health professionals to work rurally. Surveys show that few healthcare professionals want to work in rural areas. The trust needs to fund raise close to $3 million for its project, and currently has pledges of $855,000. It already has a site, almost directly across the road from West Coast Health, and plans to start earthworks in 2017 and have the building completed by 2018. Inger Vos

The Herbal Dispensary: How to survive the silly season

I

t’s that time of year when our diaries are starting to fill up with social events and end of year functions. This usually involves drinking more alcohol and eating richer foods placing more stress on the liver. As well as detoxification, the liver is involved in maintaining blood sugar, cholesterol and hormone levels to name just a few of its functions. If your liver is stressed your energy levels won’t be as good. So to make the most of this hectic but fun time of year, incorporate the following herbs and nutrients into your diet. Milk Thistle The ‘queen’ of liver herbs. Numerous studies have proven milk thistle’s liver restorative and protective effects confirming what the ancient Europeans knew when they started using this herb thousands of years ago. Milk thistle can be taken as a tincture, tablet, or tea. B Vitamins This group of vitamins are essential

them. They are also essential for converting glucose and fat into energy in the body. It’s best to take B vitamins in the morning with food. Cruciferous vegetables Broccoli, kale, cauliflower and cabbage contain compounds that are involved in detoxification. Use these raw or steamed to add a bit of variety and colour to your salads. Sulphur containing foods Sulphur is another important nutrient for liver detoxification. Plants that are high in sulphur are garlic, onions, leeks and chives as well as meat and eggs.
