It is also very important to know that the ministry funding is a pledged donation. The funds will only be allocated after the trail project has been completed. To put it in a nutshell: no authority, no trails, no money. At this stage no commitment can be made about a starting date for the project. As stated in the article, December is inaccurate and unrealistic. The good news is that iwi and the Advisory Board have recently given their approval for the club to move forward with the applications, under certain conditions (review process, safe access...) They say all good things take time and we believe this community project is a good thing. Receiving the ministry grant was quite a success for our small community but what is still more important is that all parties involved maintain good relationships. These relationships are way more valuable than any potential economic benefit. Dirk De Ruysscher Raglan Mountainbiking Club

Stan Walker is the star attraction at Raglan’s Christmas in the Park this year.

T

here will be a big, shining star at this year’s Raglan Christmas in the Park.

But the event’s organisers hope that it will not lead the masses over the deviation to attend the Christmas celebration put on every second year for the Raglan community. Surfside Church has announced that singer, actor and TV personality Stan Walker will perform at the free community event, which will also include music by Hamilton soul funk band Sir Brown and local talent Reiki Ruawai. Walker won Australian Idol in 2009 and has since had triple platinum album success and won five New Zealand Music Awards. His hit singles include Black Box, Choose You and Unbroken. He has acted in movies Mt Zion and the recently released Born to Dance, and has twice been a judge in The X Factor NZ. Surfside Church pastor Roger Peart said the congregation was pretty excited about

hosting Walker at Christmas in the Park, but the church wanted to stress that the event was not a big Stan Walker concert for people from far and wide. Usually, Christmas in the Park attracts about 1000 people and Rodger said they could probably handle about 2000 at this year’s event. “It will be a bigger job this year: more security, more parking. “But, it’s not just about Stan - it’s a positive Christmas celebration for Raglan people.” Walker would only be on stage for some of the time, he said, and the rest of the evening would include performances by school groups and the local community, carnival rides, face painting, Christmas carols and a visit by Santa. “Most of the groups performing won’t be professional.” Rodger said the church had wanted to do something a bit special for the community this year, and someone came up with the

idea of getting Walker, who grew up in New Zealand but now lives in Sydney, to sing. While Kimbra has sung at Raglan Christmas in the Park before, that was before she became famous. Rodger said the costs to get Walker came in and they “coughed and spluttered” but decided to go ahead with it any way. The cost of holding Christmas in the Park is met by fundraising, sponsorships and grants by Waikato District Council and various trusts, and this year the event is likely to cost twice as much as it usually does. More sponsorship is still being sought, and anyone able to contribute is asked to get in touch with Surfside Church. Raglan residents should bring a picnic and rug to join in the Christmas celebration at Kopua Domain on Sunday, December 6, from 5pm till dark. In case of wet weather the event will be held the following evening. More information will be posted on the Facebook page Raglan Christmas in the Park. Inger Vos

Public Places Bylaw– Are the rules right for you? Parking time limits and the use of legal highs are just some of the issues Council wants the community to provide feedback on in their proposed Public Places Bylaw. After

seeking

input

from

Councillors and Community Board members, Waikato District Council is proposing the following changes to the bylaw: • Huntly – an increase in parking

time limits on parts of Main Road and Station Place. • Raglan - the removal of one boat trailer park to make four new car parks at the wharf. • Ngaruawahia – proposed 120 minute time limits to car parks on one side of Martin Street. Sue Duignan, General Manager Customer Support, says feedback is important because parking affects everyone. “Parking is an ongoing debate in our communities, we need to hear from everyone to ensure

we’re making informed choices. Whether you agree or disagree - tell us so we can make the right decision for your town.” Council has also proposed a ban on consuming, or distributing, any mind-altering substances in public places. “We want to protect our communities, keep residents safe and minimise offensive behaviour in public places. We need your feedback to support this ban” explained Ms Duignan.

Other areas up for discussion are roadside mobile traders such as coffee carts and fruit and vege stalls and the use of skateboards, roller skates and bikes. From 28 October, you can visit www.waikatodistrict.govt.nz or any Council office or library to view the statement of proposal, proposed bylaw and the submission from. Tell us what you think about what we’re proposing from 28 October – 30 November.

(NZ$103m) Tasman Global Access (TGA) cable project, a joint venture by Vodafone, Spark New Zealand and Telstra.

The trans-Tasman submarine telecommunications cable between Sydney and Auckland, which will come ashore on Raglan’s Ngarunui Beach, will significantly improve New Zealand’s international broadband connectivity and resilience, say the telecommunication companies. A TGA cable landing station, which will house equipment associated with the cable to be hauled ashore at the south end of the beach, is currently being built at 331A Wainui Rd, on top of the hill opposite Wainui Reserve. The building is made up of three levels, but only the top level will be visible to the public, said Vodafone community relations manager Caitlin Metz. The site would be planted out in natives, in a similar style to the reserve. Last week work was being done to replace the existing beach manhole buried near the surf patrol tower. Four giant concrete slabs were used to hold back the sand while the new manhole was positioned, and had since been removed, said Metz.

Contractors work to replace the beach manhole for the Aqualink and TGA submarine cables on Ngurunui Beach. New cable ducting is currently being drilled between Ngarunui Beach and the cable landing station. The existing Aqualink cable, which was put in by Telstra-Saturn in 2001, and the new TGA cable will pass through the new manhole, along the new ducting and to the station.

Raglan residents hot under the Usually slow drivers and dogs are among the posts that attract the most heated comments on the Raglan Notice Board Facebook website, but news that a bunch of male strippers are coming to town has fired up much of the female population – but in a different way. “I’ve never seen so many girls getting excited all at once like this, it’s a phenomenon,” posted Raglan resident Ian Ellis. Metz said the new cable was expected to arrive in New Zealand waters in March and would be hauled ashore later that month and buried, weather allowing. A specialised cable-laying ship would be visible offshore during this time. The TGA cable is expected to be built and providing data traffic by July. Inger Vos

Wells said she was approached by the tour planners to host the event and was initially worried that stripping might be the wrong image for the venue. “But they assured me that it was classy cabaret.” She needn’t have worried. Judging by the response to the notification on Raglan Notice Board, the 100 tickets available for the strip show will probably have sold out already. The Sydney Hotshots are in New Zealand with their My Love Tour which features dance tributes to Fifty Shades of Grey and Magic Mike. The night includes a variety of games and competitions, and some up close and personal attention on stage with the men. But for those who miss out on tickets, they may still get to clap their eyes on the

group of “tall, tanned and ripped guys” around town. Sydney Hotshots publicist Cassandra Geselle said Raglan was chosen specifically as part of the tour schedule because it was a great surfing destination and a beautiful part of New Zealand. “The men have five weeks on the road with back-to-back shows so we try to make sure that they get to see as much of the country as possible and that they have some time to experience life outside of the metropolitan areas. “They are already talking about surfing, so no doubt you will see them down in the waves when they come to town! Given that they will have a couple days off, they are super-excited to spend some time in the surf, and to hopefully soak up more of the countryside. The guys are also superfriendly and easy going, and would be happy to take photos and have a chat to anyone who approaches them. So if you spy a group of tall, tanned, ripped guys out and about in the surf … make sure you say hello!” Tickets to the show cost $30 and went on sale yesterday, available from Orca. The two-hour show begins at 8pm, with cocktail specials from 7pm. A set menu is available from 5.30pm. Please phone 825 65 43 if you wish to dine before the show. Local writer set to release second children’s book

Police hit with spate of burglaries it or lose it. That’s the message Lofock from Raglan police following a spate burglaries in town.

Latesha Randall pictured with her new book, Abigail Knightly, featuring illustrations by Esther Tattersall.

Randall is a woman of many L atesha talents. An accomplished writer,

she is also well known for her Raglan Coconut Yoghurt brand that has been a recent food sensation nationwide. With her writer’s hat on, Latesha will be celebrating the release of her second children’s book, Abigail Knightly with a book launch at the Old School Arts Centre on Saturday 7 November. The Chronicle sat down for a quick Q and A with Latesha to get the story behind her new book. You are quite the busy bee at the moment with your Raglan Coconut Yoghurt business but you also wear many other hats! For those that have not yet met your lovely self, what other ‘jobs’ do you do? Yes, a busy bee indeed! I run a digital agency with my fiancée Seb, called The Good Agency. (www.goodagency.co.nz). We help good businesses thrive, and I do this largely through words – assisting business owners with copywriting, marketing strategies, and PR via the magazines/outlets I freelance for. I’m also the editor of Arrival travel magazine. Tell us about your new children’s book, Abigail Knightly, and how that came about? I wrote the story about 5 years ago. I had just finished a children’s book writing course through a local Polytech and I was feeling very inspired to write stories, I wrote heaps of them, but only a few really stuck and Abigail Knightly was one I didn’t want to just abandon in a dusty notebook. I worked on it over the years, refining the wording, and sending it off to various publishers. I got heaps of rejection letters (very kind, encouraging ones I must say!) but I didn’t give up on the story. I got inspired by a book SARK wrote that talked about making whatever pitch you do really creative, so for my last two approaches to publishers I went all out. I made an Abigail-style dress-up box and decorated it with pictures of real children I know who were dressed up in their own creatively put-together outfits, and I attached a multi-colour cover letter. It worked! RSVP Publishing accepted my story a year ago and have just released it this month. Were there any highlights or lowlights you can think of while you were writing the story? For me, writing is all highlights. I loved writing it and refining it. What’s hard is the

‘getting it out there’ part and dealing with rejection! You just have to believe in your story and keep going. You published your first book at the tender age of 19! Do you have any advice for aspiring writers? Write all the time. Write everything you experience. Write in different styles, for different purposes. I’ve researched and written about nearly every topic under the sun for my various copywriting jobs (I used to run a copywriting business), and I’ve also had a couple of personal blogging projects, plus writing travel stories and children’s stories. It’s good to try out different types of writing to develop your own style. Raglan is home to quite a few writers and creative people in general. Do you think living here inspires you or has an affect in any way? Definitely. I love living here and feel really blessed that I’m able to. So many people in the world are focused on day-today survival. Being able to have the time and safety to think creatively and express yourself through art or writing due to having your basic needs met is a real luxury and I try not to take it for granted. The beauty of Raglan and its people is certainly very inspiring. Who are some of your favourite writers? At the moment – Allegra Goodman, Elizabeth Gilbert, Brene Brown, SARK, and Eckhart Tolle. When I was younger I read a lot of fantasy books and loved Robert Jordan and Robin Hobb. Have you read any good books recently? I just finished ‘Big Magic’ by Elizabeth Gilbert. It’s all about the creative process, and I think anyone who either already loves to express themselves creatively or wants to become more in touch with their creative side would find it a good read. I love her light, approachable, humorous style of writing. What’s next for Latesha? Well Latesha is hoping to get a nice break over Christmas! This has been the most full-on year of my life so far and I’m ready for lots of reading, writing and volleyball sessions over the Christmas holidays. Abigail Knightly Book Launch @ Old School Arts Centre, Saturday 7 November from 3.30pm. Join Latesha to celebrate her book launch with dressups, face-painting and lots of cake!

Raglan constable Raewyn McLachlan said there had been 10 burglaries last week, including the theft of cigarettes from SuperValue. “Normally we get 10 in six months. Something is going on and we are not sure what. “As long as there is opportunity people will take it … People need to be vigilant and security conscious. Don’t make it easy for them by not locking windows or doors.” Most of the burglaries were from houses, McLachlan said. “All around town: along State Highway 23, east side, Cambrae Rd area … and Upper Wainui Rd … some from Okete Rd … day and night.” Items that seemed to be targeted included electronics, “people leaving their tablets out, laptops, iPods, cellphones; jewellery, and worryingly we are seeing an upsurge in firearms being stolen, although not so much here.” McLachlan said she believed the thefts might be by a local person or people because they were being done at all times of the day, “and it could be people not necessarily in cars because it’s not big stuff being taken”. SuperValue store manager Ross Jones said the supermarket was broken into on Tuesday night last week, around midnight. The offenders, who forced their way in through the front exit doors, were caught on

security camera but their faces were well covered. “They seemed to know what they were doing.” They took only cigarettes. Jones said he was still working out how much was taken but it was “a high value theft”. “We have a lot of petty theft but this was the first time we have had a proper break-in in a very long time.” He said he was working with police to improve security systems. Raglan resident and artist Hayley Hamilton, who lives off Okete Rd, said she was being more security conscious after her home was broken into on Tuesday last week – even though she was on the property at the time, working in her studio. “I have been locking the doors even though I’m working on site, being more vigilant, but it’s hard when someone has been in your home when you have been at home.” Her son’s Macbook Air was taken, and all his savings for his overseas trip. She said the thieves had also visited a neighbouring property by car but was interrupted on site by the home-owner and had pretended they were looking for someone. A number of rural properties had been hit, she said. “It’s not a very nice thing to happen and the kids are pretty freaked out.” If anyone has any information on the burglaries please phone Raglan police. Call for help to fix water tower mural The tagging of a “Raglan icon” ends a week of burglaries in and around town. During what was otherwise a busy but well-behaved Labour Weekend, the water tower mural was tagged overnight on Friday. Raglan constable Raewyn McLachlan said police did not know who was responsible but she had noticed that the tag was the same as that on a hay barn near Wainui Reserve above Ngarunui Beach. Raglan residents vented their frustrations at the taggers on Raglan Notice Board, on Facebook. Mike Ward, who brought the tagging to the community’s attention, posted: “No-one has the right to tag a worldwide icon like that. When you Google search Raglan it is one of the pictures that pops up.” Raglan Community Arts Council is

looking for an artist to lead the restoration of the mural and cash donations for paint. The mural was first designed and painted in the late 1980s by Marizo Sarzini, who was then chairman of the arts council, but his artwork of Raglan landmarks covered only a third of the tower. In 1999 it was much faded and in need of repair, and the Waikato District Council approved funding to repaint the water tower. Arts council chairman Rodger Gallagher has called on the Raglan community to help get the mural looking great again. To get this started he has donated $100 towards the cost of paint or equipment to fix the damage. If you would like to help with a cash donation, or as an artist or project leader, please email: rodger@raglanartscentre.co.nz. Inger Vos

Raglan Kindergarten update

W at

e have had a change of staff Raglan Kindergarten recently. Whaea Mel was with us for more than eight years and in that time she met and supported many parents and children as they entered kindergarten.

Raglan Kindy farewells Whaea Mel.

She was a wonderful help to our teaching team and we will always be grateful for the time spent with her! We wish Mel all the best for her future. Now we welcome Whaea Zoe as support staff. We are grateful to Zoe for taking over the administration role in our office and for continuing to help teachers guide new families within the kindergarten, as well as carrying out all the office jobs that are required. We thank Zoe for beginning and continuing the journey with us and we look forward to spending time with Zoe at Raglan Kindergarten. From the team at Raglan Kindergarten!

Hayao Miyazaki, one of the founders of Studio Ghibli, because he is a really inspiring person, his ability to give such meaning to stories is so unique. What’s the benefit of living in Raglan? The fact that the ocean is right on our door step and that our community is really close and works hard for our well being. How could Raglan be improved for it’s youth? For adults to understand how our society is affecting the way kids are starting to act, dress and be essentially, because of the way we look up to popular people especially advertising, singers and actors it makes us look really confused and trying to be some one we’re not in adults eyes. Best thing about social media? How easy it is to connect with friends and it’s something to do while you’re bored. Worst thing about social media? Grumpy adults talking about how bad social media is and how we’re going to get square eyes, cut us some slack your generation WAS the one that invented the internet and basically every hand held device. What is the biggest issue facing the world right now? The fact that climate change is happening and no one is really doing much to stop it even with the facts that state how we won’t be able to live on earth in the year 2055 because of how much we’ve destroyed the planet then we called it “progress”.

The country you would most like to visit? Well I would love to visit Japan for the food and the culture. If you were stuck in an elevator for 24 hours with one person – who would you like that person to be? If I had the perfect world it would be one of my favorite anime/fictional characters but in the real world probably Tom Hiddleston. Best book you’ve ever read? Pet Sematary by Stephen King. Best movie you’ve ever seen? Spirited Away. You have the exact same meal for the next 12 months. What’s your pick? Sushi, definitely. If you were an animal what would you be? A wolf. If you were a car, what would you be? A galaxy painted Lamborghini or sports car. What gives you the creeps? John Key signing the TPPA other than that nothing really. What two things would be on your desert island? An airport and pilot. Favorite website? KissAnime.com In 10 years I see myself…… With lots of cats.

Introducing new effective health products (Part 3)

Commercial insurance broker Karei Polman.

scientifically proven I nternational and patented ‘Breakthrough’ health products are now available in Raglan.

Supported by Otago University Scientist and medical research scientists, medical doctors and other universities worldwide. “The Most Powerful Antioxidant You Have Never Heard Of…. It’s called Glutathione.” Dr. Mehmet Oz (The Dr. Oz Show). Glutathione’s importance is largely unknown to the general public; we cannot live 1 second without it in our cells.

Our Guest Speaker Karel Polman, a 73yr old Commercial Insurance Broker suffered over 30yrs with an autoimmune illness. A type 1 diabetic on high doses of Insulin Injections, steroids and lots of medications, had two cataract operations, excruciatingly sore feet and increasingly tiring; finally having an urgent open-heart surgery for 18 blocked arteries. My Naturopath gave me this product - after three days, amazing results of sleeping thru the nights, more energy, the severe feet pain disappeared. OUR FAT LOSS PRODUCT Being heavily overweight - 107kgs, I lost 21 kg’s in 5 months. My personal gym trainer told me that after 5 months, my metabolic age dropped from 73 to 57yrs, losing 5% body fat with 83% of the weight loss being fat, not muscle loss. The trainer, in disbelief, concluded it normally takes 1 to 2 years hard work to get these results and had not seen results like it in 12 years as trainer; I trained just once weekly. Relate to this? Upcycle! - Buy Local Made or Handmade - Buy a gift from one of our many talented Raglan artists. - “It’s the thought that counts.” Make a gift that is really special: handmade jam, cookies in a decorated tin, a framed photo.

Trap line volunteers @ Karioi maunga

Monthly or biweekly trap checking, clearing and rebaiting. Good level of fitness and experience tramping preferred, as volunteers work alone or in pairs. To volunteer please contact wordsbybexie@gmail.com Refuse! - Instead of stuff, give experiences - Support local business. Buy gift cards for massages, surfing lessons, kayaking, rock climbing, meals, the list is endless. - Buy an Oxfam unwrapped gift like a piglet, seeds, or safe water and help tackle poverty. - Give your time. Give a gift card for a picnic on the beach, housecleaning, or babysitting. Or give your children a subscription to a monthly surprise family activity. Recycle! - Wrap and decorate - Use magazine pages, newspaper, children’s artwork or scraps of fabric to wrap gifts. Decorate with scrap materials, handmade tags, leaves and flowers. So let’s rethink Christmas. Let’s move away from consumerism as the only option for showing our love, and look at the bigger picture of how to live on a finite planet.
