Raglan Love: Spotted on the peace wall in Ireland, a little bit of aroha for Whaingaroa. Image thanks to Charlie and Hayley Hamilton.

Dear Editor My nearest and dearest has just finally complained that I do not know enough about the people of the land, whose ancestors made incredible journeys across the Pacific Ocean and discovered New Zealand. I have been trying to make up for this lapse. I found it in Books for Kids, near 5 Cross Roads in Hamilton. Oddly they also had a copy of Mᾱori Myths and Legend by A.W. Reed. the author highlights the close relationship between Māori and the once lush forests and clear rivers, and the desert origins of the invading white men. In the spiritual area, Māori derived concepts from its natural environment. Finding inspiration that in stark contrast to Christian origins in stark desert areas of the eastern Mediterranean. A.W. Reed opens his book with a poem on the beginning of life:

'Lift, lift up the Southland, Upward, upward lift the South Sky Put each in its own position, there to rest forever. Lift up, lift up Rangi And with offering made to that, O Rangi We lift that up' In contrast to that in the Bible; 'In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the Earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.' Ian McKissak Raglan

Raglan sewage capacity still an issue?

T

he Raglan Community Board has asked for an emergency meeting with council respresentatives next time a sewage spill occurs in Raglan, in the aftermath of the Good Friday spill. Waikato District Council (WDC) representatives appeared at the board’s monthly meeting on Tuesday to discuss the spill and its repercussions. A lack of communication and signage were the key areas of concern raised by board members, with the Raglan wastewater system’s capacity also questioned. “The community board were in the dark [after the spill]. There was a lack of information. We feel we were not considered a key player and we want that to change,” Alan told WDC general manager service delivery Tim Harty. An estimated 30 cubic metres of untreated wastewater entered the Raglan Harbour on March 25 at the Marine Parade pump station in Nihinihi Ave, prompting a ban on taking fish and seafood in the area. The public was also advised not to swim in the harbour over the busy Easter holiday period. The warning against swimming was lifted a week later, but the harbour was not cleared for fishing until April 1 and warning signs to prevent the taking of seafood were scheduled to remain in place until April 24. The Waikato Regional Council is conducting an investigation into the spill.

The WDC’s detailed report into the spill is due at the end of the month. Tim told the board the primary cause of the spill appeared to be the failure of a pipe between the pump station and a storage vessel. There was no lack of physical response at the time of the spill when the council was notified at 7.45pm that night. About 15 staff responded within 15 minutes, and had stopped the spill about an hour later, he said. “It is not something we want to happen. But with any wastewater plant, it is a risk that sits there. It is not something you can completely mitigate,” he said. Board members were critical about the lack of communication with key interested parties and the lack of decent-sized signs warning the public not to swim or take seafood from the harbour at that time. “We need someone to come out here and flood the town with signs: ‘the kai is poisoned’,” said board member Boyd Dixon. Tim acknowledged the council could have done better in the communication and signage areas, and agreed to try and remedy this in future. “This is not the first [sewage] spill… you’ve had the ability to learn this on previous occasions, in all fairness,” said fellow board member Peter Haworth. Alan tried to stress the council’s comments in its interim report, that the condition and capacity of the Raglan

wastewater network was good and not an issue. The report noted that the December 2016 50-year wastewater strategy “highlighted concerns with resource consent compliance for both suspended solids and pathogens, however recent work undertaken has addressed both these matters, to a degree”. “There are still some residual risks around consistently meeting these compliance levels. Flow into the RWWTP can be high, however the plant balances flows well and the discharge volumes generally meet consent requirements,” it said. However, several board members challenged Alan for dismissing the capacity and condition issues. “Just thinking about this spill and wondering if the [Raglan wastewater] system can cope with all the new development… how can we guarantee we won’t have big spills when we have more homes plugging into the system?” board member Lisa Thomson asked. Raglan’s wastewater capacity is obviously a concern to the community, with the issue prompting resident Jocelyn Hartstone to start a petition calling for the council to reverse the decision made by independent commissioners to allow the Rangitahi Peninsula development to connect to the town’s wastewater system. Waikato District Council says it cannot legally overturn this decision, and there is “adequate capacity” in the sewage system to accommodate the 500-lot development. The petition, which can be signed in the Trade Aid shop, states: “We want Rangitahi Peninsula development to have a separate land-based water system as first proposed in the original resource consent application”. Mrs Hartstone says the petition is in response to the Good Friday , and that “wastewater contamination occurs too often” in Raglan. There has been numerous wastewater spills in Raglan’s harbour over the years – about two wastewater spills every year according to council records - and numerous calls for council to upgrade its wastewater system so that it can cope with the swell in visitor numbers. Waikato measles update continues to circulate M easles in Hamilton and surrounding

areas. Waikato District Health Board's Population Health service has confirmed 15 measles cases and another 12 under investigation.

One of the new confirmed cases attended the Kapa Haka event when an earlier measles case was there while infectious. There are also four confirmed cases, which don't have any direct link to the other cases, which indicates that measles has now spread wider into the community. One case used public transport in Hamilton on a daily basis while infectious. "Information about measles in Hamilton has been circulated to media already but with the recent increase, it's timely to remind people again of the signs and symptoms and to check their own as well as their child's immunity status," said Waikato DHB medical officer of health Dr Richard Wall.

"If you do not have immunity get vaccinated as soon as possible with the MMR vaccine. Vaccination affords full immunity in the vast majority of cases. " Waikato schools have been made aware about the outbreak and what to do if there was measles in their school. Further information is available on our website http://www.waikatodhb.health.nz/publichealth-advice/a-z-of-public-health-topics/ m-o/measles/. Sports clubs, or other clubs holding events, need to be aware of measles in the community and let people know that they should not attend sporting events/practices if they have been in contact with someone with measles, unless their vaccination status is up to date. Measles can be very serious. If you or your child becomes unwell please phone your GP or call Healthline on 0800 611 116 for advice or seek medical attention depending on severity of illness. It is

important to call first because measles is highly infectious, and people with measles can infect others around them for example in waiting rooms of GP surgeries or ED. People who are regarded as not immune to measles are: People born after 01 January 1969 who have not had two doses of the measlesmumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine or have not had a laboratory result showing immunity Children over four years old who have not received their second dose of MMR vaccine Infants under the age of 15 months who have not received their first routine dose of MMR vaccine. They are susceptible and rely on everyone else to be immune so that measles does not spread to them Visit http://www.waikatodhb.health. nz/public-health-advice/a-z-of-publichealth-topics/m-o/measles/ for Waikato measles information.

Cheri, who is based in Raglan, has only had her EarthandStoneNZ website up and running for about two weeks, but has already received orders from England, Australia and Raglan. She is selling a range of moulded resin and crystal jewellery, using social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram to promote herself as well her new website, earthandstonenz.com.

Tastespotting

She is making mostly rings at the moment but plans to include pendants, earrings and men’s jewellery in future. “The possibilities are endless when you’re online. It’s hard to be on Facebook and Instagram and all that while being online, but it’s really cool,” she says. Cheri has been making jewellery for several years, experimenting with different types of materials. While travelling in South East Asia she was making macramé and crystal jewellery, but saw on her return to New Zealand that

others were already producing similar jewellery here. “I wanted to do something a little out of the ordinary… and I saw this thing [resin and crystal jewellery] on Pinterest [website], so that’s where the inspiration came from.” Cheri, who is expecting her first child in July, also works for her father, Jwan Milek, at his Raglan Photo Gallery. Between customers she can be found sanding her rings in her dad’s workshop. “My long-term plan is to become a successful jewellery designer and to have that as my main income,” she says. The jewellery business is highly competitive, with a huge range of products and creative ability on the market already. “[But] I feel my product is something new, so it’ll be interesting to see how it goes.” Rachel Benn

a series of interviews with local Foodies (people who have an enthusiastic interest in the preparation and consumption of good food)

This week we caught up with local foodie Wendy Rossiter.

are my guinea pigs, sometimes Its good, sometimes its interesting.

How did you become interested in food and cooking?

Do you have many failures in the kitchen?

Growing up we lived on a farm and food was pretty basic, so I was always trying to make it taste more exciting. I love food. Who are you inspired by ? A foodie relative, a famous chef, a blogger? My Nan. She was always in the kitchen making jam, pickles, baking, whipping up something amazing and tasty out of nature. We would pick fruit or veges from the garden or some aunty or neighbour would drop off some seafood and she would work her magic. I was always not far away with my tasting spoon. What’s your attitude towards food. Do you have a certain eating philosophy i.e. Vegan, Paleo or sugar free. It gets very confusing with all the information about how and what to eat theses days. I think food is one of Gods gifts to us and we should enjoy it,

Not too many. Mainly under cooking. Do you eat out often. If you do what do you usually go for? Not really but when I do I will order something that I will never make at home or the most weirdest thing on the menu. What is your kitchen tool you could not live without? My Knife. What ingredients would you bring on a desert island with you - can only choose 3. Lemons, garlic, butter. If you had to go on Masterchef who would you partner up with? My friend Loren. She is an awesome cook. She actually wants to do it but she swears a crazy amount so it would be just one big BEEP on the show.

be thankful that we have it, of course try to eat fresh and healthy.

What’s your go to meal when the cupboards are not well stocked? The something out of nothing meal.

Do you follow recipes or do you wing it most of the time?

Omelette with what ever there is in the fridge in it.

Definitely wing it. I have a few dishes I make off by heart but I like experimenting and using what I have on hand. My family

What do you usually take to a pot luck? Mexican refried beans, salsa and corn chips.

Can you share a simple recipe with our readers: Salsa: 1 onion 4 tomato cucumber chilli bunch of coriander lemon S&P Dice onion, tomato, cucumber, chilli and coriander and put in bowl. Squeeze in lemon juice and stir. Season. Serve with corn chips or use as a side.

Mineral hair colouring technology available now at Tonic

raditionally, the norm with haircare products, and especially colouring Tproducts, is that they contain chemicals – often quite harmful - to enhance the effectiveness of the product. Original & Mineral’s product range is here to bust these myths out of the water and is available locally at Tonic.

The world is changing and many of us are looking for more natural solutions. We’re becoming chemically conscious and are increasingly concerned about the amounts of harsh chemical used in everyday cosmetics and haircare products. Pregnancy, illness and skin sensitivity has also led many to seek out products with a lower chemical compound. We believe that if you treat your hair with low chemical hair colour, natural based hair care and

styling products, it will be less stressed, healthier and the colour will stay locked in for longer. That’s why Original & Mineral makes professional hair colour without harmful chemicals, making it safer and gentler for hair and skin and for the hands of our stylist. O&M believes that no one should have to be exposed to unnecessary chemicals. That’s why O&M invented Clean Colour Technology, a revolutionary hair colour system without harsh chemicals. They are one of the first hair brands to produce professional permanent hair colour that’s ammonia, resorcinol and Paraphenylenediamine (PPD) free, making it gentle on hair, scalp and hands. Raglan Timebank: strengthening the community

W Timebanking is a way of giving hat

is

Timebanking?

and receiving time and skills to build supportive networks and strong communities.

It builds on the “pay it forward” concept

money is not involved; all exchanges are done through time credits. Raglan Timebank provides a way for residents to meet like minded people and become more involved in the community. Membership is open to everyone. The Raglan Timebank currently has 185

members. Some of the skills on offer include math tuition, making sourdough, vegan cooking, pottery, te reo Maori lessons, miniature pony rides, making kombucha and much more. The Whaingaroa Environment Centre (WEC) started Raglan Timebank in 2012 with the aim to build a resilient community by connecting people and enabling them to share and swap skills, time and resources. Raglan Timebank uses an on-line membership system to record exchanges. As well as individual exchanges, Raglan Timebank organises coffee mornings, pot luck dinners, workshops and working bees to help to grow the Timebank and support WEC projects. Timebank recognises that every person has useful skills to share. Sharing these skills creates and promotes well-being and helps communities to flourish and thrive. Everyone’s time is considered equal. Every hour that is given yearns a time credit. This credit can then be used to “buy” services from other Timebank members. Research shows strengthening community bonds decreases social isolation and increases sustainability and resilience in communities. Timebank members really value being able to connect with others and try out new things. If you would like to find out more about Raglan Timebank the coordinator, Sharon Tribe is at WEC on Thursday’s from 12pm-1.30pm or you can email Sharon at timebank@whaingaroa.org.nz

Don’t forget to use Raglans free shopping bus Did you know that there is a Tuesday morning ‘shopping bus’ here in Raglan? The bus can pick you up from home around 9.30am and drop you back again around midday. Discussions between The Raglan House, the Raglan Club, the Raglan RSA and SuperValue resulted in the Raglan Club van being made available to uplift members of the community from their homes, bring them into Raglan to do their shopping, visit the doctor, library etc and then be delivered back home a couple of hours later. A team of volunteer drivers has been set up to make sure that this service can run each week. “We have been aware for some time that there are members of our community who

are socially isolated and have difficulty in getting into town. They are often dependent on the goodwill of others to get out and about. We hope that this service encourages people to come into town, do some shopping,

renew their library books, visit the doctors or maybe just enjoy some social time with others” says Chrissy Hodkinson of The Raglan House. Bookings are essential and can be made by phoning The Raglan House on 825 8142 no later than Monday 3pm.

CONNECT OPEN DAY At Raglan Town Hall on Saturday 18th June If you are working in / providing a service to our community and would like to participate in the Open Day please book a stall with Chrissy at chrissy.hodkinson@ theraglanhouse.co.nz Be quick! Spaces are limited!

Pink Shirt Day 2016

Pink Shirt Day started in a high school in Canada in September 2007. A new student wore a pink shirt on his first day and was harassed and threatened by other students. Two senior students went home that day and purchased 50 pink shirts to distribute to classmates to wear and standup against bullying. This spontaneous protest was acknowledged round the world and many countries now participate in Pink Shirt/AntiBullying Days. In 2012 the United Nations officially declared May 4th as Anti-Bullying Day. This year in NZ, Pink Shirt Day is being celebrated on Friday 20th May. The NZ message is one of taking action: SPEAK UP. STAND TOGETHER. STOP BULLYING. Small actions lead to larger actions that lead to social change. Pink Shirt Day is an opportunity to stand up and celebrate the rich diversity in our community and to support positive messages of healthy relationships and kindness. Please support our local initiatives for Pink Shirt Day. For more information please see www. pinkshirtday.org.nz

This Connect Community monthly feature is proudly brought to you by Raglan SuperValue in association with The Raglan House and Raglan Chronicle. Logo thanks to Angela Soanes. www.designedly.wix.com/angelasoanes. 16-18 Bow Street, Raglan. Phone 825 8300. Open 7.30am - 8pm, 7 Days

T

he idea of seeking counselling can seem a bit daunting to anyone, and may be something you tell yourself you ‘don’t have time for’. Which is where ‘Time to Talk Counselling Services’ come in.

For Counsellor Helene Evan NZAC, her focus is to provide timely services when appropriate. Whether that’s in person or alternatively on the phone. With over 15 years of experience, she has become a well oiled listening board. Helene relocated to Raglan in July of 2015 from Rotorua. She has gone from nurse to social worker to counsellor, working for family services with a focus on children with trauma and anger. She specialises in services for drug and alcohol abuse, mental health, PTSD, as well has family parent dynamics. She also has a post graduate in ‘grief and loss’. “It’s about creating a positive outcome for people, talking about what is important to them and

showing them that there are alternatives and a resolution can occur,” Helene said. She is looking froward to providing services for the older community in Raglan as well. “There is no difference in age, just a different focus.” Helen brings qualified and professional services to the community and is looking forward to continuing her practice here. She is available for in-person appointments or phone call chats if it’s easier. Contact Helene today at timelywomin@xtra.co.nz or 027 323 6384.

to writing and education. One of Sarah’s goals as a herbalist is to make herbal medicine more well known and better understood. From Taupo, Sarah moved to Raglan especially to join the team at the Dispensary. Outside of work she has a wide variety of interests and is willing to give most things a go. Mountain biking, pilates, day tramps, arts and crafts, volunteering with St. Johns ambulance and eating good food with family and friends filled a lot of her spare time in Taupo. Also being a country girl

at heart, she loves working on her family’s lifestyle block back in Taupo, whether its fixing fences, weeding veggie gardens or caring for their animals. One of eight children, Sarah comes from a tight knit family and likes hanging out with kids. Being new to Raglan Sarah has found it to be lovely, friendly little town and has enjoyed meeting some of the local faces. She is looking forward to getting to know Raglan better and also learning to surf. The Herbal Dispensary Clinic and Organic Foodstore. Ph 07 825 7444.
