held their first Fun Morning event in Raglan last Thursday at Te Kopua Domain. Dear Editor Our sense of being special received a nasty blow last week. NASA announced that 1284 new exoplanets had been found in recent spatial research. These are spread throughout space over a vast area. About nine of those are thought to be rocky planets like Earth and a possible habitat. Then there is the question of how far space has expanded since the so-called ‘Big Bang.’ This label may have to change now we have the concept of never ending space. But can we get our minds around of ‘never ending space’? I can’t anyway. My expectation is that everything has an ending, including myself. Gives me the shivers! Our earlier conventional ideas assumed that God was ‘up there’. But this earlier belief dodges the issue. I am reminded of one of my Favourite stories by George

Flights to look for signs of kauri dieback The fight against the spread of kauri dieback is taking to the air later this month as Waikato Regional Council checks west coast and north Waikato areas for signs of the disease which has been killing our forest giants.

Dieback Programme, which is funding the flights. An expert observer will be looking for yellowing kauri leaves, canopy thinning and dead branches. “Once a tree is identified with the potential symptoms we then carry out soil sampling to confirm whether the tree is infected with the disease or not,” said Ms Parker. Kauri dieback itself is caused by a microscopic fungus-like organism called Phytophthora agathidicida. This disease infects kauri roots and damages the tissues that carry nutrients and water within the tree, basically starving the tree to death. It kills kauri of all sizes, from the smallest of seedlings to the mightiest of giants. Once a tree has the disease there is no cure, so preventing its spread is the best way to go. People with questions about this survey, orhttp://www.weathermap.co.nz/?p=ragl kauri dieback, can call Ms Parker on 0800 800 401. Bernard Shaw, ‘The Black girl in search of God?’ The girl asks many men, said to be wise, where can she find God. Eventually she meets an Irishman who has a down to earth wisdom. He tells her to settle down and raise her [children] well. Maybe we should all take this advice. aglan export Jordan Abrahams has set up a business with a conscience, so that as her fledgling online travel accessory grows, so does her contribution to others. Jordan and her friend Francesca Logan, started working on their ideas for a stylish but practical range of travel luggage and accessories about two years ago, which culminated with the launch of their online business, Elephant Stripes, in March. Aimed at women, the Elephant Stripes range includes backpacks, suitcases, foldup bags, travel cosmetics, packing cells and toiletry bags. These come in a range of different designs and are loaded with practical features. The pair drew their inspiration from their own travels to South-East Asia, when they were frustrated by the lack of good travel gear on the market. “You could either get something that was functional and well-made or something that looked good. We’re trying to combine the two into something stylish and cool and well-designed,” Jordan says. The two 23-year-olds, who met at Victoria University, also want to help others so have built into their business a charity called The Ashla-Maia Foundation, which owns a percentage of Elephant Stripes’ shares. This will mean that some business profits will get funnelled into the foundation to fund work on the issues close to Jordan and Francesca’s hearts, such as teenage

mental health, female leadership and entrepreneurship and breaking the poverty cycle through education. They are addressing the latter in their “Bag for Bag Donation Programme”, whereby Elephant Stripes donates a bag to someone in need when people buy one of the selected bags from their range. “It’s really important to Francesa and I that we do something to make a difference in the world,” Jordan says. “This [Elephant Stripes] has been a really good platform for us for that.” The enterprising pair are using crowd funding platform Kickstarter - in which customers pre-order Elephant Stripes products at discounted prices – to raise at least $15,000 to pay for a larger production run later this year. “That’s where Kickstarter is really cool because it’s allowing us to raise that money before we go into production.” The campaign had raised more than $20,000 by Monday, with seven days left to run. “We want it to be an international business and so far we’ve sold to 15 countries – so we’re off to a good start,” says Jordan, adding that most of those online sales came from New Zealand and the United States. A feature on Elephant Stripes that appeared in the American teenage magazine Glamour, which has five million followers on Facebook, helped: “That took us flying

over the [$15,000 Kickstarter] line in about 24 hours”. For the Kickstarter campaign, the women have partnered with the Bali Children’s Project, wanting to do something in Indonesia where most of their products are manufactured. Jordan says they have designed some colourful school bags for the Balinese children and for every pack purchased during the Kickstarter campaign they will gift one of these school bags to a Balinese child. So far about 50 children’s bags have been funded. Jordan says they plan to fill the bags with donated stationary and school supplies, then at some stage, go to Bali to hand over the bags. Jordan, who has a Bachelor of Science majoring in Environmental Studies and Development studies from Victoria University, now lives at Broadbeach on the Gold Coast in Australia, but still feels grounded in Raglan, where her mum, Liz Hosking, and the rest of her family live. The plan is for Jordan to look after the Australian side of the business while Francesca takes care of the things in New Zealand. They are constantly expanding their range of products and hope to launch a travel clothing range – reversable and crease-free – by the end of the year. “It’s really scary [to set up this business] but you just feel the fear and do it anyway. We’ve just trusted our instincts and it’s been really good,” Jordan says. Rachel Benn

be allowed to stay in Raglan, with the Waikato District Council Proposed Freedom Camping Bylaw 2016 open for submissions until May 27.

Freedom camping was prohibited in the Waikato until the Freedom Camping Act came into force in 2011 in time for New Zealand’s hosting of the Rugby World Cup. The legislation prohibits councils to impose a total ban on freedom camping, but allows for a $200 instant fine for those camping illegally and a fine of up to $10,000 for those dumping sewerage incorrectly. The Waikato District Council is proposing a bylaw that specifies council/ public areas in the Waikato that are and are not open to freedom campers. For the Raglan area, the draft bylaw suggests that freedom camping not be permitted at and around Manu Bay, Tohora Close and Calvert Rd at Whale Bay, around the Wainui Bush and Ngarunui Beach reserves, Kopua Domain, Cliff and Puriri Sts, Riria Kereopa Dr, Wainamu Rd, the Papanui Point carpark, Ruapuke Beach Rd

Time to decide on freedom camping issue esidents can have their say on R where freedom campers should and the nearby Swann Access Rd, and the Bridal Falls carpark at Te Mata. Under the proposal, freedom camping will be permitted in Raglan at the Wainui Rd carpark by the Raglan Fire Station and some of the carparks at the bottom of Stewart Street, with campers only able to park there between the hours of 8pm and 8am. Vehicles that are fully self-contained and carry a current self-containment warrant can stay a maximum of three nights at any one location. However, non self-contained vehicles, can only freedom camp at these two sites for a maximum of two nights. The council is asking for feedback on the proposed areas and restrictions, and whether there are other areas where freedom camping is causing problems. The Raglan Community Board is making a submission to the council, and will suggest one of the parking areas at the Raglan rugby grounds also be included for fully self-contained campers. Board member Bob McLeod says while it supports the draft bylaw, the board would like to encourage campers without their own facilities to use one of the Raglan camping grounds.

MP FOR TARANAKI-KING COUNTRY

New Zealand Motor Caravan Association members could currently also stay at the Raglan Club carpark and at any “park over properties” (POP) in the town, with Raglan providing three dump sites for grey water. The major issue about freedom camping is policing, he says, and the council needs to extend the powers of ticketing for camping offences to more of their staff so that enforcement of the rules is strengthened. “The key to this whole thing is … for the council to have more people to give them [campers who break the rules] tickets. As soon as it’s known on social media that if you park there you’ll get a $200 instant fine, people won’t go and park there,” Bob says. “It’s not the certified ones that are the problem. It’s the uncertified ones that are. They aren’t looking after our environment. Leave no footprint is our motto.” Rachel Benn Submissions on the bylaw must be received by 5pm on May 27. They can be made online, emailed to consult@ waidc.govt.nz, posted to Waikato District Council, 15 Galileo Street, Ngaruawahia 3720, faxed to (07) 824 8091 or delivered to any council office or library.

Raglan, 4 RAGLAN Chronicle

Robbyn Storey pictured with one of the Vietnamese girls.

A so the saying goes, and that’s picture tells a thousand words,

exemplified in a simple shot of Maungatawhiri Road resident Robbyn Storey jubilantly holding a “tiny disabled” 10-year-old Vietnamese girl in her arms. “She just spent every minute up (from her stretcher) laughing and squealing,” Robbyn recalls as she relays to the Chronicle her experiences working voluntarily with children early this year at four orphanages in Ho Chi Minh City, aka Saigon. It was heartbreaking, she says, to see the hundreds of HIV/AIDS victims – and others with disabilities – but uplifting too to see how they responded to personal attention. Indeed Robbyn’s been completely won over by the ‘Buds to Blossoms’ programme of paediatric massage and is set to return in July. The child in the picture was bypassed by most volunteers, Robbyn explains, because she’s older than the “cute toddlers” in the orphanage. “But she was adorable and responded so well to getting off the stretcher

and sitting up.” Like Vietnam’s other abandoned children she had the usual shaved hair, flat head and legs permanently flopped out in a frog-like pose, adds Robbyn. “They have very severe muscle contractus from lack of movement as they lie on their beds all the time … it’s heartbreaking. “They’re terribly neglected.” But Robbyn, a registered nurse and massage therapist, believes she can help make a difference in the orphans’ lives by “just for that little while giving them something so simple, so important”. The one-on-one nurturing attention and touch is provided for just two months of the year – in January and July – by teams of volunteers like herself attached to the Buds to Blossoms programme, founded in 2012 by a California-based non-profit organisation to foster the health, wellbeing and development of orphaned, ill and disadvantaged children. “Just for a while they feel loved, touched and cared for,” the soon-to-be 60-year-old grandmother says. They smile and they laugh, a stark

contrast to being ignored by their caregivers or treated “way worse than animals”. Their little hands open after gentle massage for instance, Robbyn adds, and they almost blossom – like they’ve just become aware of their body. Robbyn says her experience back in January affected her profoundly. “I came away a really changed human being … I knew this is what I need to be doing.” She’s looking forward to returning in July, believing “we all need to do some kind of service … it makes you look at yourself.” She’s shared stories and photos with her family, and admits to getting a bit teary when talking about such vulnerable children. “It’s really important for me to be a role model for my own children and grandchildren,” she says. “It’s so cruel how these kids (Vietnamese orphans) have absolutely nothing … no human touch … they’re victimised.” The work may be “quite confrontational” – shocking even – but Robbyn credits her training as a nurse and her own dealings with trauma as standing her in good stead. The Buds to Blossoms programme itself is “really good at helping you cope”, she adds, with an orientation process before starting as a volunteer and daily debriefings throughout the experience. Robbyn feels she’s come full circle in a way. “From my earliest memories I always wanted to work in an orphanage.” Now not having to work for a living so much and with the time to give, she’s found her place. But the experience doesn’t come cheap. “Volunteering is a very expensive business,” Robbyn reveals. “I’ve been fundraising but not terribly successfully.” It’s not just the airfares, food and accommodation costs: there’s also a $2000 “participation fee” before being accepted as a volunteer on the programme. But she won’t be put off her work in Vietnam and is excited to also have been asked by the programme organisers to be part of a foundation group heading to Nepal for the first time next April. Edith Symes Go to www.budstoblossoms.org/robbyns to make a donation to support Robbyn’s fundraiser.

New community projects receive funding boost The Raglan Community Board approved funding for three community projects at its meeting last week. June Penn, from the Whaingaroa Environment Centre (WEC), made a presentation to the board on progress towards its Plastic Bag Free Whaingaroa Raglan project, which aims to make the town 80 percent free of single-use plastic bags by July 2017 and totally free of plastic bags by July 2019. A WEC survey of businesses and the public showed good support for the project, which was a collaboration between the centre, the Raglan Chamber of Commerce and Xtreme Zero Waste. She said WEC wants to launch phase 2 of the project, which will involve a range of events including visits to schools, organisations and local businesses to promote the project. An important part of the launch was to offer the community alternatives to plastic bags. The group is busy researching viable solutions for everyone. While the project will cost $13,356, the WEC sought, and received, $5549 of the cost of phase 2 from the Raglan Community Board’s discretionary fund. The Raglan and District Museum Society also received $3088 from the fund towards its ‘Back to School’ exhibition, which will run from October to December this year to coincide with the Raglan Area

School’s 150th Anniversary celebrations at Labour Weekend. The exhibition will celebrate Raglan’s educational achievements and highlight the educational aspects of the town’s history. The third discretionary fund application considered by the board was from the Raglan Chamber of Commerce, which received $1000 towards a community event celebrating the 2016 Matariki in Raglan. On Our Plate: Rock-It Kitchen

Eating our way through Raglan…

Located just off Wainui Road on your way to the beach, I found myself at Rock-It Kitchen over the weekend. A once woolshed turned art studio, it is now the perfect home to the kitchen, a lowly surf shop and the esteemed TractorFM. Not to mention, one of the best backyard decks in town. Rock-It’s walls show signs of the art studio that once was. Throughout the year you will find local artwork decorating high and low, paying homage to the building's past. On any given morning or late afternoon, you’re sure to find something to fancy your taste buds here, but it’s Rock-It’s evening menu that has me coming back time and again. Open for dinner on Friday and Saturday nights, Rock-It’s nighttime vibe is sure to please. Taking full advantage of the deck in the summer, to cosying up with friends inside in the winter. It’s the perfect place for a night out. Sarah, owner of Rock-It Kitchen, works alongside her chefs, Sascha and Simba to put together fresh, unique dishes that will make you stop with every bite to savour the taste. Rock-It’s menu is simple and straightforward, and the staff is more than helpful when you can’t quite decide between one dish or the other. …In this case, I was recommended two. Because why not. I heard the free-range chicken had just been given a little rework, so I was excited to see what the fuss was all about. Had I paid closer attention to the description on the menu I would’ve been more prepared for bliss, but I decided to go for the all out surprise instead.

As I was cutting into the perfectly juicy piece of chicken, I realised that this wasn’t just any ‘piece of chicken’, it happened to be stuffed with a portobello mushroom and bacon duxelle. For all of us non-chefs, that means a mushroom and bacon minced paste.

The chicken sat on top of a medley of seasonal broccoli, tomatoes and two plump, herb packed dumplings. Garnished with pesto and fresh rosemary. I’ll let the picture speak for itself. When the second dish arrived, I had to pause for a quick taste bud breather. I sipped on my wine and prepared for the next round. I have to point out that the current gallery of work by Geb Burns is stunning. I was almost happy with my wine, her pictures and the good music playing in the background. But alas, someone has to report on the food around here.

Raglan Coconut Yoghurt present new flavours

The ever-popular Raglan Coconut Yoghurt (RCY) brand has this week launched two exciting new flavours. Months of development have gone into the new flavours: Mango & Turmeric and Blackcurrant & Heilala Vanilla, which both contain a fruit andChronicle spice flavour combination. Dish two featured seared scallops and prawns, Raglan Packed Ham with real fruit these new atop a feta risotto, all drizzled with citrus and truffle Location: & Chartwell oil dressing. Honestly, it’s torturous trying to write this recap for you. Scallops, prawns, and feta risotto. You really can’t go wrong with this one. The citrus dressing on top enhanced each one separately, making the combination a mouth watering delight. I tried my best to savour the flavours on both plates, and unfortunately had no room for dessert. But I can say with confidence that a long black and a homemade cronut or hot slice of banana bread from the cabinet makes for the perfect sweet treat no matter what time of day. Whether you are partial to meat, fish or prefer the vege route, Rock-It has something to suit every palate. If you haven’t made it for dinner yet, gather your friends up and head out for ‘Eats 'n' Beats’ on a Friday or Saturday night. With occasional live acoustic musicians or a dinner set from one of Tractor’s own DJs, the tasty combination is sure to send you home happy. Karamea Puriri Visit Rock-It at 248 Wainui Rd, Monday to Sunday from 9am. Dinner Friday and Saturday from 5pm. Call ahead to reserve your table, 825 8233.

Te Uku Club Prizegiving and AGM

Measles spread continues A confirmed at Morrinsville College fter

last Friday, measles is now present at another school. Fairfield College in Hamilton has had a student attending school whilst infected. This is the second school in the past week where an infected measles case has been confirmed. In total three schools have had cases with Nga Taiatea Wharekura school having a case in early April.

Te Uku Pony Club held their end of season prizegiving and AGM at Wally and Avril Hawken’s home on Friday 13 May. It was well attended with riders being presented with their Pony Club certificates from D level through to C+ level. They were also presented with achievement cards for representing Hamilton Pony Club at Waikato Area competitions and also representing Waikato Area at National level competitions. Portia Mathews and Ayla Bensemen, our two senior riders represented Waikato Area at the Horse of the Year show Inter-Pony Club Showjumping competition. A huge achievement. We have had a very busy season with three camps; outside specialist instructors, horse mastership evenings and treks. We also hosted at our grounds on Okete Road a Hamilton Pony Club instruction camp with

Peter Barke, a national Pony Club instructor. Our age levels range from 4 years to 18 years. Certificates this season were: Estelle Laboyrie C+; Lena and Brianna Hayes C, Jahzara Waitere D+; Jasmine Berejoni, Jayla Waitere and Georgia Benseman all gained their D certificates. Jasmine Berejoni was awarded our Points Trophy for best turnout at each rally throughout the season. Jasmine also won the Junior Dressage and Showjumping cups, and Brianna Hayes won the Senior Dressage and Showjumping cups. We are looking forward to the new season which will start with an uncounted rally on the 11 September at our grounds at 10am. Te Uku Pony Club has been in existence since the 1950s with a period of recess for a number of years and was restarted on the present grounds about 36 years ago. If you would like any more information about Pony Club please feel free to contact Avril Hawken 825 8064.

Waikato District Health Board's Population Health Service has asked students and staff at both Fairfield and Morrinsville College to ensure they are immunised against measles. "Students and staff may have been exposed to this infection, and they should look out for symptoms," says Medical Officer of Health Dr Richard Wall. Both schools have been notified, advising all staff and students who do not have documented immunity to measles (such as having not had two doses of the Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) vaccine), that they must stay at home in quarantine until Tuesday 24 May (for Morrinsville College) and until Monday 23 May for Fairfield College. The Waikato District Health Board Population Health Service says that so far there are 22 confirmed cases of measles in the Waikato and 12 are under investigation. Measles is a serious illness, and one in 10 people with measles needs hospital treatment. Measles is infectious before the rash appears, and is very easily transmitted from one person to another through the air. People most at risk of contracting the disease are those who have not had the MMR vaccine, or who have had just one dose of the vaccine. Anyone born before 1969 is likely to

be immune to the disease without having had the vaccine. "The only way to protect from measles and the best way to avoid its complications is to be fully vaccinated. My request would be for parents and families to check that their children's immunisations are up-to-date." says Dr Wall. How to protect you and your family against measles: • Make sure your children and family are fully immunised. It is the best way to provide protection against a number of diseases and complications. • Measles can't be treated once you get it, so the only way to prevent the disease is through immunisation. Measles Symptoms Dr Wall says the time delay from being exposed to measles to developing symptoms is usually 8 -14 days, but can be up to 21 days. The typical symptoms of measles are: • The first symptoms are a fever, and one or more of a runny nose, cough and sore red eyes • Then after a few days a red blotchy rash comes on and lasts up to one week. The rash usually starts on the face and spreads to the rest of the body • Children and adults with measles are often very sick. People should not go directly to a doctor's office or to an emergency department, because if they do have measles they might infect other people. They should phone their GP or call Healthline toll free at any hour of the day or night on 0800 611-116. Visit http://www.health.govt.nz/yourhealth/conditions-and-treatments/diseasesand-illnesses/measles/measles-frequentlyasked-questions for Waikato measles information. Waikato DHB

Opinion: TPPA Roadshow too little, too late

Representatives from Raglan at the TPPA roadshow.

On Friday (6th May) the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) Roadshow finally reached Hamilton, months after it got on the road, and way too late to inform people given the very limited 'consultation' on TPP. Having little publicity and being at a time when most people were working, it was poorly attended. However, four protestors from Raglan made it through the ‘Big Brother’ security to the obscure, unsignposted venue, as did several others, who made up most of the audience and were the only ones asking questions. The Roadshow started with a lengthy speech by a top civil servant, MFAT's (Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade) deputy secretary, David Walker (New Zealand's chief negotiator in the TPP talks). He emphasised TPP's benefits and glossed over the drawbacks. After

that the best part of the show was the coffee and cakes, though, packed with sugar, caffeine and dairy products, some commented that, like the TPP, they might be good for trade, but not health. Next came the questions. Radio Live talkback host, Sean Plunket, who chaired the meeting, couldn't resist making a few dismissive comments as speaker after speaker exposed TPP's flaws. One of the Economics lecturers at Waikato Uni questioned the economic justification for the TPP. I said I didn't understand why David Walker had said the TPP would allow governments to continue protecting health, yet had said there was a special provision to stop tobacco investors taking them to the disputes tribunal. I asked why the exception didn't extend to other health threats, such as alcohol. Even Sean Plunket indicated he thought

David Walker's response was lame, when he said the TPP governments had decided tobacco was worse than alcohol. They're probably right on health, but not on many other problems alcohol causes. The point is though, that David was saying governments will be free to pass health, social, environment, etc legislation, but then saying that to allow governments to do that, they thought they needed a special exemption for tobacco. That gives a strong indication that investors will take governments to tribunal on nearly everything else. As with tobacco company, Philip Morris, they might not win, but even just holding legislation up for a few years and instilling fear into governments, might be worthwhile. The Roadshow came the day after the Waitangi Tribunal found that the Treaty of Waitangi clause in the TPP should ‘provide a reasonable degree of protection to Māori interests, though it may have “a chilling effect” on the Crown's willingness to meet Treaty obligations. The Tribunal suggested that this issue, and an appropriate Treaty clause for future trade agreements, should be the subject of further dialogue between Crown and Māori. So another Raglan activist made the point that, “the clause will not protect Māori rights because the Crown decides whether there are possible breaches and, seeing the Crown are responsible for every other breach that has occurred to date, its rather like the Crown being judge in its own court.” In concluding, David emphasised how long it would take to get legislation through. No doubt in the run up to the 2017 elections, that will be the focus of further protests. An opinion poll in August found 22.9% supported TPP, but 31.3% opposed it, so both sides will be aiming to reduce the 45% with 'no view'. J. Lawson

Council seeks submissions for Matariki exhibition

Waikato District Council is ‘lifting the lid’ for the second time on the work of local artists, with the return of its upcoming ‘suitcase’ art exhibition which aims to celebrate Matariki (the Māori New Year) in the district. The exhibition is part of the Council’s local Matariki Festival events and it focuses on one of the festival’s five themes: Mahi Toi (the arts). “We’re inviting artists living in the Waikato district - or any artist who identifies as being Waikato-Tainui - to submit up to two pieces of new or existing work for the exhibition,” says Waikato District Council General Manager, Strategy and Support, Tony Whittaker. A ‘travelling suitcase‘ exhibition is one which features artworks which each fit into a suitcase and can travel due to the compact size. To be eligible for the exhibition, the works should apply either traditional Māori arts and crafts methods or contemporary modern methods, says Mr Whittaker. “Each artwork also needs to embrace and demonstrate what the Māori New Year means to each artist and it must have been created within the last 12 months.” Artworks accepted as suitable for the exhibition will be showcased at a range of Waikato District Council venues later in June and through into July. A wide variety of entries is expected, as the works can use any medium, for example, metal, wood, clay, textiles, fibre, or paints. “The artworks could be paintings and sculptures, installations, jewellery or wearable art – as long at the artwork fits into a suitcase and meets the other exhibition criteria,” Mr Whittaker says. Entry forms are available from Waikato District Council offices or phoning or emailing Lianne Van Dem Bend: 07 824 5732 or Lianne.VanDemBend@waidc.govt.nz. Entries should be received by the Waikato District Council by 5.00pm on Tuesday, June 14. A separate entry form is required for each entry. For more details on this and other Waikato district-based Matariki festival events visit: www.waikatodistrict.govt.nz. WDC
