have more people... issuing fines''. More work for more people trying to solve problems by implementing a fine. Travellers often leave NZ without paying there fines anyway! It will be a whole lot more work for enforcement officers and an increased workload for Raglan police. With submissions closing this Friday, council informs us we can only object on the grounds of ''health and safety". There are plenty of reasons to object under that heading e.g. rubbish, toilets etc. I think we should be able to object (and I will do) on other reasons also. Raglan is growing fast and is putting pressure on our community and its infrastructure during the summer months. Surely logic will prevail and a solution to that is not providing free camping in the middle of our central business district. Raglan has many awesome facilities to accommodate campers whereby they are charged a fee to stay and that pays for the managing and services of that traveller rather than it becoming a burden on the ratepayers. Raglan has a fantastic alternative to free camping and that is whānau camping ground on Riria Kereopa Memorial Drive. Set up at similar costing to a Department of Conservation camp ground and its well run, strictly monitored and is in a stunning location. Why under cut tangata whenua on that! http://www.weathermap.co.nz/?p=ragla Thanks Tim Duff Raglan

Returning sand creating rip problems at Ngarunui Beach Human impact a concern for sand dunes

T

he sand seems to be returning to Ngarunui Beach, where the dunes have been ravaged by erosion and storms, but the movement of sand has caused a few headaches for local surf lifesavers this summer. Trust Waikato Raglan Surf Lifesaving Club has had a very busy summer, with the club reporting the beach had been “particularly nasty” over its patrol period between Labour Weekend and Easter. The 90-odd club members who patrolled Ngarunui Beach took part in a total of 97 rescues – more than any other beach in New Zealand – and 17 searches. They also performed first aid on 86 occasions. Club administrator John Thomas says it is a general pattern that with the movement of sand comes a change in the waves and rips on the beach, and in Ngarunui’s case, a corresponding change in rescue statistics. Most rescues came about through people either being caught in rips or overestimating their abilities in the ocean – the latter occurring to mostly men. An important part of the lifeguards’ work over summer was to talk to people about Ngarunui Beach and educating them about the risks of the beach. Volunteers and the Regional Lifeguard Service did this 11,836 times with a total of 27,181 people over the summer period. “We might go down 100 times a day

to the beach and warn people about the currents and the sun and all sorts of things,” John says. “If you don’t follow the rules it can be extremely dangerous… if they [the public] disregard the advice they’ve been given that’s where the trouble can start.” In terms of the erosion at the beach, it was “not too bad” and the lifeguards had boat access at the beach. The club’s tower at Ngarunui Beach, where the eroded dunes had come close to, was not under threat at present: “If it gets into trouble [with the erosion], we’ll just shift it.” “Sunset Beach [at Port Waikato] have lost their whole car park and it’ll never come back. We’re lucky at Raglan, we’ve got some of it back,” John says. Shaw Mead, an oceanographer and eCoast managing director, says erosion goes in phases and Ngarunui Beach is actually healthier now than it was in the 60s and 70s, before the dunes were planted for erosion reasons. A lot of sand had now moved round the corner from Ruapuke to Ngarunui also, with sand tending to move from south to north. “There’s a lot of sand in the system… it’s just something that comes and goes,” says Shaw, adding that this was a sign that the beach was recovering. “These kinds of things – each year is not the same.” Rachel Benn

While the sand appears to be returning to Ngarunui Beach, the human impact on the sand dunes along Wainamu Beach, coupled with the erosion from recent weather and tides, is a major cause for concern. Reported on news website Stuff, local activist and Wainamu Beach resident Angeline Greensill says people are unaware of the hard work that goes into protecting the dunes and pedestrians accessing Wainamu Beach are walking over the dunes where restoration work like dune planting - is being done. Efforts to restore the sand dunes have been taking place for over 10 years with a focus on planting native species like pingao and pohuehue to not only restore the native dune plants that existed before development, pests and pedestrians but to also create a habitat for native wildlife like the NZ copper butterfly. Other species planted include sand daphne and NZ sea spurge, both of which are threatened with extinction. These dune plants help to keep the sand in place. Many members of the Raglan community have volunteered time and resources over the years to protecting these sand dunes and pedestrians walking over the planted areas are destroying the restoration work that has been achieved.

maintenance

The Raglan Plunket committee had to disband last year because of low numbers, and a local support group was formed in its place to continue fundraising for the maintenance and upkeep of the Plunket Rooms in Bow Street, explains longtime Raglan Plunket supporter, Charlotte Hartstone. The support group’s fundraising money paid for the paint that was used last week when Hardies fixed and redecorated the Plunket Rooms’ waiting room, after Raglan Plunket nurse Sue Sallis put out a call for help on the Raglan Noticeboard. “We’ve got three children. They’ve all been Plunket babies. We’ve been Plunket babies. It just seemed right to help,” says Kerin Hardie, whose three-year-old daughter has her final Plunket checkup in the same rooms next week. Three Hardies’ staff worked two full days at no charge on the project, which also involved erecting a feature wall and restoring the art deco fireplace. “We’re really grateful to Hardies. They’ve done a beautiful job for us,” Charlotte says. However, there was a lot more work the

support group – of which Charlotte was one of the two members remaining – would like to do to “spruce up” in the 1947 building, with the roof tiles being next on list. “It’s actually a heritage building so it’s a bit more complicated to get fixed up. We’re only allowed to use certain colours and with tiles we have to replace like with like and any alterations have to be done in accordance with the heritage regulations,” she says. “This comes at a higher cost as well.” The local Plunket coffee groups – which offered parents with young children the opportunity to get together informally with other parents – were thriving, but the support group was desperate to get new members so it could keep control over the money it had raised already and in the future. “There’s no politics, no committee. It’s purely about fundraising so we can keep the power in Raglan about what we spend the [fundraised] money on,” she says. The support group only needed a few people – fathers, mothers, grandparents included - to give a couple of hours every few months to keep fundraising for the nonurgent cosmetic and comfort aspects of the building that Plunket New Zealand did not fund. Rachel Benn If you are interested in becoming a member of the Raglan Plunket support group, please phone Charlotte Hartstone on 825-7332.

Marama Ormsby putting her training into action.

S but life’s looking up – literally he’s found school a bit of a trial

– these days for Raglan West teen Marama Ormsby.

Despite a fear of heights the 16 year old’s now climbing sheer rock faces rising up from the ocean out Indies way, beyond Whale Bay, and scaling waterfalls then abseiling back down them on farmland off Te Hutewai Road. And it’s all thanks to Gareth Jones, who’s recently taken the year 12 student on as his trainee at extreme adventure

company Raglan Rock, and aims to help turn her ambition to become an outdoor instructor into reality. “It’s quite scary,” Marama admits of her daredevil exploits, “but I like to face challenges … it pumps me up.” Gareth says he and his protege are “good friends, we have good communication,” and is confident of eventually getting her trained up to NZ Outdoor Instructors Association standards. But it's early days yet, cautions Raglan Area School teacher and deputy principal Quenten Browne, pointing out Marama's

only had a few days so far with Raglan Rock. Quenten helped Marama organise the weekly work experience placement as part of the school's efforts to transition senior students into the workforce. "She came up with the idea herself," he adds. Marama confesses she "wasn’t really attending (regularly) at school ... I was getting real bored”. She’d experienced a couple of Raglan Rock’s confidence-building adventure courses a year or two earlier with her whanau class, and more recently was inspired by a TV programme that showed a woman rock-climbing. And she’d always wanted to work abroad. “I can’t think of anything else to do in Raglan that I can transfer into work overseas,” she says. Marama’s proud of her new-found skills and abilities in the great outdoors. “I honestly feared for my life,” she recounts of her experience climbing the Pinnacles around the corner from Indies – “holding onto the bolts” while hanging from the cliff face high above the ocean. “I thought nah I can’t do this but (in the end) I got real capable with it,” she adds. Marama knows qualifying as an outdoor instructor will take a long time but says she just wants to “get cracking”. "I’ve got trust in Gareth," she adds of the challenges ahead. Gareth – who set up Raglan Rock three-and-a-half years ago to offer climbing adventures in and around Raglan for locals and tourists – says Marama's training will encompass not only the “very technical” rope work involved in becoming an instructor, but also the business side of things like accounting and safety management. “We are a legitimate safetyaudited company.” He also hopes Marama’s experience will show local teens there are work opportunities in Raglan outside the norm. Raglan Rock – which is ranked No 1 on TripAdvisor among 15 attractions in Raglan and is featured in the ‘Lonely Planet’ travel guide book – may have a strong tourist focus but also works with clients as diverse as school groups, the military and even honeymooners looking for lofty adventures. Raglan Area School: Pink Shirt Day

YourMedicalClinci

Last Friday Raglan Area School celebrated Pink Shirt Day as part of a national campaign against bullying.

The student leadership team took charge of the day, organising activities like face painting and pink dress-up competition as well as a Pink Disco for students in years 3-6. Pink Shirt Day started in a high school in Canada in September 2007. A new student wore a pink shirt on his first day and was harassed and threatened by other students. Two senior students went home that day and purchased 50 pink shirts to distribute to classmates to wear and stand up against bullying. This spontaneous

protest was acknowledged round the world and many countries now participate in Pink Shirt/ Anti-Bullying Days. In 2012 the United Nations officially declared May 4th as Anti-Bullying Day. This year in NZ, Pink Shirt Day was celebrated on Friday 20th May. The NZ message is one of taking action: SPEAK UP. STAND TOGETHER. STOP BULLYING. Small actions lead to larger actions that lead to social change. Pink Shirt Day is an opportunity to stand up and celebrate the rich diversity in our community and to support positive messages of healthy relationships and kindness. he “antibiotic apocalypse” may already be upon us.

According to Dame Sally Davies, chief medical officer for England, 50,000 people are dying every year in Europe and the US from infections that antibiotics have lost the power to treat”. http://www.theguardian. com/society/2016/may/19/ englands-chief-medical-officerwarns-of-antibiotic-apocalypse “Antibiotics are currently being handed around “like sweets”, Lord O’Neill has warned, allowing deadly bacteria like E.coli and Salmonella to mutate into drug-resistant strains”. “Without action, he said, super bugs risk making routine surgery potentially lethal, killing millions and costing the world economy $100 trillion a year by the middle of the century.” http://m.nzherald. co.nz/world/news/article.cfm?c_ id=2&objectid=11641230 So what can you do to support and strengthen your immune system, to prevent infections, help yourself recover quickly and avoid antibiotic use. • Eat garlic regularly. Garlic is a natural anti-biotic, can kill bacteria, fungi and parasites. • Add warming, pungent spices such as ginger, chilli and cinnamon to your cooking to promote defensive immune activities and provide effective treatments for

respiratory infections. • Eat a wide variety of fruit and vegetables, choosing organic where possible to get sufficient nutrients required by your immune system. • Echinacea: more and more research supports its immune enhancing activities. Just take 5mls daily maintenance dose, this can be doubled or even tripled if infection threatens. • Ongoing stress weakens your immune system. In this case, support yourself with tonic herbs such as withania and the ginsengs. Wanna interrupted by the dark side of the internet On Saturday the 14th of May, Wanna Internet started to experience an enormous amount of activity directed towards one of its customers,. The amount of traffic this activity was causing was analogous to imagining the Waikato Express way during the early hours of the morning and suddenly taking all the peak hour traffic from Auckland, Sydney and London and plonking them on the express way. In order to protect customers and its network Wanna quickly closed it borders to the internet while they conducted an investigation into who/what where was causing this activity and could start the process of blocking the activity and restore normal service. Working with international community the activity was shut down by a number of internet providers across the world, restoring services. The activity in industry speak is known as DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack. A DDoS is where the attack source is more than one, often thousands of, unique computers. It is analogous to a group of people crowding the entry door or gate to a shop or business, and not letting legitimate parties enter into the shop or business, disrupting normal operations. Criminal perpetrators of DDoS attacks often target sites or services hosted on highprofile web servers such as banks, credit card payment gateways; but motives of revenge, blackmail or activism can be behind other attacks. You may be thinking that thousands of real people are sitting at their computers performing the attack; the reality is that the bad guys have taken over those thousands of computers and instructed them to perform the attack. So how do they take over all of those computers? By installing malware and viruses. Most of you would be aware of malware and viruses and some of them take the form of deleting your photos and precious documents, others encrypt your important files and hold you to ransom for financial gain to unlock them and others are used to hijack your computer as use it as a tool to perform attacks on others such as a DDoS.

The government has announced recently they are investing $22.2m which will enable significant advancement in the country’s cyber security infrastructure by creating a new national Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) to combat cyber-attacks and cybercrime, however the government and providers like Wanna cannot do it alone, the internet is a shared ecosphere where the actions of some people can easily effect everyone else, so everyone has a part to play. So how can you play your part? Patch regularly. Update your software as often as you can. Studies show you can prevent 79% of all attacks simply by patching. Most modern software, like Windows, OSX, Adobe products, Java, and more have automatic patching programs. You should turn them on, and say “yes” whenever they ask to update. Use antivirus and update it. It doesn’t matter which one you choose or whether it’s a free or full version, but use AV software and let it update automatically. Yes, this includes Apple users. AV software is like the hand washing of the computer age; you need its basic sanitation to help prevent the spread of infection. Think before you click. Use common sense before interacting with links or attachments. Does something sound too good to be true? Are you wondering why someone sent you a file? Does the link look weird when you hover over it? If you’re asking yourself these questions, you probably should avoid clicking. Secure your personal information. Make sure your passwords are changed regularly; be mindful of what you allow the public to see on your social media sites and posts, Identity theft is an ever increasing risk in our interconnected world. I would like to apologise on behalf of Wanna Internet for the disruption to our services on Saturday night and personally thank all of our customers for their understanding and continued support. My team really appreciated the positive support they received during the event. Sincerely, Jason Brand Managing Director, Wanna Internet Ltd.

What’s Enviro Club? Every week educators from the Whaingaroa Environment Centre visit local schools, working with junior students - connecting them with their environment through creating edible gardens Where’s Enviro Club? Currently we are at Waitetuna School and Raglan Area School. Raglan Area School students are looking to take their skills to improve the Community Garden in Wi Neera Street - growing food that will make its way to the Raglan Food bank Why Enviro Club? For a community to become more healthy, resilient and environmentally sustainable, we need to change our behaviour. Education alone doesn’t change behaviour; we need to see the relevance of environmental sustainability in our everyday lives. When students grow food, they engage with the natural world, and the source of their food. Students make the connection between their behaviour and the environment, sustainability is made relevant to them and they become inspired to make a difference. Students become empowered with the skills to feed themselves and their families; they take these skills home and in turn they inspire and educate the wider community.

Xtreme Zero Waste Educational Site Tours Come and have a look we say! – Xtreme Zero Waste Site Tours are free for the Waikato, Hamilton City Council and Waipa districts. We are proud of our site and our people. Site tours are a great way to spread the zero waste message, pass on our knowledge and promote the zero waste kopapa. Children who attend site tours are taking the messages they have learnt home and are educating their whanau and friends. After visiting Xtreme and learning how, schools have started up their very own worm farms and composting areas. Groups can learn how to establish sustainable schools, workplaces and homes. Tours are for any age group, children or adults, and are conducted by experienced knowledgeable guides, who are passionate about zero waste. Our tours cover areas such as: Recycling, Trash to treasure, Worm Farming, Landfill, Community Enterprise And more! Talk to us about your focus as all tours can be modified to suit your learning needs.

We work in small groups, allowing for fun and interactive learning sessions. If you are interested in a tour or would like some more information please contact Nenya education@ xtremezerowaste.org.nz, tours are only conducted on Thursdays.
