Cover Firey Karioi: Image by Geraldine Burns. Story on page 4.

Dear Editor Thinking Big Hanging around cafes and drinking a chai latte, my favourite form of coffee, I am able to read interesting magazines. One I found on Saturday fits in with my recent cosmic musing. I'd been having my last swim of this season and looking up at the sky, while just laying on my back like drift wood. It was the fact that by doing this I was looking into the cosmos, the past and the future. Also the place where God is usually assumed to be, or more logically, everywhere. Modern science is also coming up with some interesting ideas. We had heard of a black hole into which our Earth was being

drawn. A more recent idea is that there are many black holes, which sounds very dangerous. Our poor little planet has to be drawn into one sometime. But we won’t be here by then, you and me, and possibly the whole human race, but keep smiling. Why not? A gloomy outlook won’t help. .Ian McKissak, Raglan

Lyrical Raglan home scoops architecture award

This award-winning architectural home is a hidden gem in Raglan’s environs.

A

Raglan house has been judged a winner in regional architecture awards, with words like “sophisticated”, “exquisite” and “lyrical” used to describe the semi-rural family home. Crosson Architect’s ‘Bach Bach’ entry in the 2016 Waikato and Bay of Plenty Architecture Awards was a winner in the residential section. It is a large modern house overlooking the harbour, comprising two rectangular forms that wrap around a central courtyard. Designed for an unnamed opera singer and her husband, the house is inspired by J.S Bach’s Oboe Concerto, which is reflected in the use of natural wood cladding and lining elements. Awards convener Geoff Lentz says the attention to detail in the house is amazing, with its use of beautiful hardwoods inside and out, metal details, double-storey height in places, a “magnificent” stairway inside

the entrance and lots of textures “reflecting the rhythm of music”. “If you saw it, it was just breathtaking. It captures panoramic views over Raglan. It’s got areas of bush around it. It’s a semirural location on top of a hill – an exquisite house and an exquisite location,” Geoff says. “It’s just very clever. That connection with music … it’s very lyrical in every detail.” The bespoke house is now nine years old but has weathered beautifully. Geoff believes the musical family use the house quite a lot, with its “generous” number of rooms. While it would have been expensive to build, it still has a minimalistic, rustic look to it. “It’s unlike most flash houses that have pretentious fences and gates. You just drive down a basic farm track and then you step over the threshold and think “’wow’,” he explains. The regional awards were won by 23 projects across six categories. New houses

won 10 of the awards, with many in popular holiday areas in the district. There was also a very strong showing by buildings in the commercial architecture category, with judges impressed with the level of investment and high standard of commercial work in the region’s “powerhouse” cities, Hamilton and Tauranga. In Hamilton, a research and development lab and manufacturing factory for window and door manufacturer APL (designed by Jasmax) won a commercial award along with the Ebbett Audi and Volkswagen showrooms and insurance company FMG’s new office building (both designed by Chow:Hill Architects). The renovation of Louise Feather’s Planning and Talking Tech offices (both designed by Edwards White Architects) received awards for interior architecture, while Hamilton’s Arcus House received an award for enduring architecture, conferred upon buildings more than 25 years old that have stood up well to the tests of time. Measles outbreak in the Waikato W

aikato DHB Population Health has now been notified of 19 possible cases of measles in the Waikato. Nine of these cases have been confirmed in the Waikato since early April, with another three under investigation and seven have been determined not to be measles. The most recent case - a staff member at Waikato Hospital - has contracted measles and had been working in the hospital while infectious but prior to developing any symptoms. The DHB has contacted all patients and staff who may have been exposed to the staff member while infectious at work. This staff member was vaccinated against measles. For those who receive two doses, the measles vaccine provides effective protection in more than 95 per cent of cases. This was a rare case when the vaccine has not provided sufficient protection. All Waikato DHB staff are being asked to check their measles (MMR) vaccination

status, especially those who work in clinical areas and those employed before July 2015. The DHB has had a vaccination policy in place since July 2015 for all new staff to be vaccinated for MMR, Hepatitis B, Varicella, Tetanus, Diptheria and Pertussis. There have now been nine confirmed cases in the Waikato since early April, with another three under investigation. One recent measles case attended a regional Tainui Waka Kapa Haka festival held Saturday 16 April at the Claudelands Event Centre in Hamilton while infectious. Any secondary cases from the Kapa Haka event would be expected to be developing symptoms over the next week. There have been no confirmed cases resulting from attendance at the event to date. If you or your child attended this Kapa Haka event you may have been exposed to the measles virus. You should look out for the symptoms of measles, which are fever, runny nose, sore runny eyes and cough. The rash starts later. We advise everyone in our community to check your immune status for measles. If you do not have immunity get vaccinated

as soon as possible with the MMR vaccine. Medical Officer of Health, Dr Felicity Dumble says this is a timely reminder to everyone to check that they and their children are fully immunised against measles. Vaccination affords full immunity in the vast majority of cases. Measles can be very serious. If you or your child becomes unwell please phone your GP or call Healthline on 0800 611 116 for advice or seek medical attention depending on severity of illness. It is important to call first because measles is highly infectious, and people with measles can infect others around them for example in waiting rooms of GP surgeries or ED. Visit http://www.waikatodhb.health.nz/ measles for Waikato measles information. Waikato DHB Raglan's West Coast Health Clinic (WCHC) has confirmed that there are currently no local [measles] cases that they are aware of. The directive from WCHC is to contact them by phone (to avoid exposing anyone else) if symptoms develop.

Tell us a little about how you started with photography? I studied photography both in high school and tertiary. I started selling my art at markets about 15 years ago, from there I was discovered by stores and galleries and have since sold my work through retail. My partner has always believed in me and encouraged me to turn my passion into a career. I also do wedding photography, this started through word of mouth with friends and friend’s families – I have now collaborated with one of my best friends to form 2 Souls Wedding Photography. Do you like shooting in digital or…? It took me a while to get into digital – as I am a bit old school and love the magic of film. It seems more precious, you really need to take your time with the shot, frame it and get all the settings right, also the surprise of getting your photos developed and seeing how they come out is so exciting. Digital is awesome though, especially for weddings – you can shoot as many photos as you want, and on a fast paced day, when you’re trying to capture all those precious moments – that’s so important. The freedom to be able to edit, crop and adjust lighting or tones etc is really handy and fun too. I’m really keen to get back into film, especially with my art – there are so many more people with cameras these days (phones!), so I feel like it would make my art a bit more exclusive and show a more raw side of the art of photography. What are some of your favourite things to shoot? I love photographing nature – especially water and clouds. I love to get up close with textures, making things look a bit abstract. I also love photographing my two daughters – their lives are going to be well documented through images!

Are there any photographers or artists that you are inspired by? I always love Danelle Bohane and Greta Kenyon’s work – there are so many talented wedding photographers out there. Pinterest often helps to inspire me with my art, but there aren’t really specific artists I can think of. I also like to be aware of the interior design trends too - ie. geometric shapes and black and gold tones etc. How would you describe your style? My wedding style is natural, fun and artistic – Mel and I never like to get our couples too posed, we love to just capture all the natural moments that happen on their big day. With my photo art, I guess my style changes a bit and evolves – mostly it’s just real, I don’t like to use Photoshop too much – to leave the image as raw as possible. I love to evoke feelings with my photos, like feelings of calmness. I love that photography can do that, some images bring back memories or take you right into that photo – like you were there. In general - I’m very aware of space and composition, framing the image well – this is probably a skill learned from being a graphic designer. I also don’t like to use my flash a lot, I love to shoot in natural light as much as possible. What are your latest projects: For the past year or so, I have created and sold framed and unframed art prints in stores and galleries around the Waikato and Bay of Plenty – the designs are made up of words (inspiring sayings or song lyrics) or geometric shapes with my photography within the shapes and letters. My work is found at Atamira and has also been in Raglan Social Club through the summer too. My latest exhibition ‘Daydreaming’ just started in the weekend, at Rock-it. This exhibition consists of mostly Raglan imagery, I’ve created some really large pieces, with simple, clean images and quality frames – these make a real impact on the rustic walls of Rock-it.

The story behind your cover photo: Firey Karioi. This photo was taken digitally on the 5th February 2007, and has had no enhancement in Photoshop. I used a slow shutter speed and moved my camera, so this is why we have 2 mountains! We have this image on a big canvas on our wall at home, it looks more like a painting than a photo. I love it even more now that we have moved back to Raglan, as we live up under the mountain, so Karioi has a lot more meaning to us. What are your dreams for the future with your photography? I would love to travel more, to photograph amazing places, then exhibit my work in these places. Especially around NZ – to be able to take my family on adventures around our beautiful country would be wicked. How can people contact you? Wedding photography: www.2souls. co.nz or email hello@2souls.co.nz g.DESIGN: www.facebook.com/ gdesignprints or email geb@g-design. co.nz or 027 6647 186.

This week the Chronicle caught up with Mike Bell: "I work at the University of Waikato and have lived in Raglan since 1986. I restarted the Raglan County Chronicle as the Raglan New Chronicle in 1988 and maintained it for about eight years so it is awesome to see the paper still going from strength to strength nearly 30 years later."

Raglan,

How did you become interested in food and cooking? My wife gave me a few basic cooking lessons when we first moved in together and once I knew how to fry onions properly there was no looking back. I started by specialising in curries, but quickly broadened my repertoire over the years as I took over

Who are you inspired by? A foodie relative, a famous chef, a blogger? No-one in particular. I like skim reading the recipe sections in magazines and browsing the web for ideas, but I hardly ever follow a recipe (unless I’m baking) – it more often depends on what is in the pantry. I’m really impressed by people like Emma Galloway and Aaron Brunet who take food to a completely different level and then write awesome books about it. What's your attitude towards food. Do you have a certain eating philosophy i.e. Vegan, Paleo or sugar free. These days I try to only use whole food ingredients and buy locally when I can. The small number of processed and refined foods I keep in the pantry I try to buy packaged in glass or paper rather than plastic or tin, but it isn’t always easy. I’d sooner buy a nice cut of meat from the butcher than styrofoam trays from the supermarket and use herbs from the garden rather than from packets, but it’s not always practical. Do you follow recipes or do you wing it most of the time?

When baking or making jams/chunteys/ etc I follow recipes pretty closely. The chemistry of baked goods is not something I can easily wing, but for most meals I’ll often just use what is at hand and am okay about substituting and tossing in the flavourings rather than carefully measuring them out. I think that if you’re not heavy handed with seasonings and taste the food as you go along you rarely go wrong. Do you have many failures in the kitchen? It’s more often with things like jams and chutneys where I under cook and have to cook again to get them to set properly. I discovered this year that I’m not great at cooking under pressure for large groups. When the Rugby World Cup games were on and we hosted one of the breakfast games I underestimated how long it would take to scramble a dozen and a half eggs, so ended up slightly over cooking everything else and burnt the ciabatta toast, but it’s pretty unusual that I cook breakfast for a dozen people. I wouldn’t want to cook professionally, particularly in a busy restaurant – I don’t yearn for that sort of thrill. Do you eat out often. If you do what do you usually go for? Not that often – maybe 5 to 10 times a year – and more often for breakfast, so I usually go for a big brekkie or eggs benedict. For other meals I look for interesting or

unusual taste combinations (like liquorice flavour chicken, chorizo with mussels, etc.) What is your kitchen tool you could not live without? My egg slice. It’s a bit bent and pretty ugly, but it’s thin and flexible and the best for getting under things like omelettes and blinis to stop them from sticking and burning. They just don’t make them like that anymore – usually too thick and chunky. I keep looking for a good one, but haven’t found one yet. There have been a couple of occasions I had to rescue my precious egg slice from the rubbish when other members of the household have very kindly attempted to keep my kitchen utensils fresh and modern. What ingredients would you bring on a deserted island with you - can only choose 3. Assuming I could harvest fish and coconut on a deserted island then a huge sack of fresh limes or lemons, cumin seed and tumeric would keep me happy until I was rescued. If you had to go on Masterchef who would you partner up with? I can’t think of anything that would compel me to go on Masterchef, so moot point. What's your go to meal when the cupboards are not well stocked? The something out of nothing meal. Story continued on page 7.

Raglan Chronicle Location: Ham & Chartwell

What is wrong with this picture? Could it be the orange road cones on the church spires? And just how did they get there?

O

range cones, normally used in road works settings, have risen to a new divine level in Raglan after the mysterious placement of the cones on a local church. The cones have been appearing on top of buildings, on top of trees and plants and in other strange places around town in the past couple of weeks. It is apparently the work of the self-titled Raglan Road Cone Relocation Crew, who has anonymously posted some of the images of their work on their own Facebook page. One of the most daring ‘conings’ in recent months has been on the two spires of Raglan District Union Church on the corner of Stewart Street and Wainui Road, with the steep rooves of the church seeming to cause no impediment to the “relocation crew”.

Raglan District Union Church pastor Doug Stephenson says this is the second time the church has been coned, with the first time occurring just before Christmas. “Those came down – I don’t know how – then we were cone-free for about a month, then one of them went back up, then the other one went up about a month later,” he says. Church leaders were reluctant to break their necks to remove them a second time. But Doug has grown used to them, and now, after driving home through road works himself, he is starting to see them in a new light. “I realised those annoying orange cones are there to guide our way and keep us on our path. “And I realised what we [the church] should do is get bigger cones because that’s what we’re trying to do at Raglan Union Church – keep people on the straight path. “So I’ve embraced those cones – I quite like them now,” Doug says. However, the safety aspect of the cone stunt frightened him – both as a pastor and in his other role as a physician at Waikato Hospital. “I just pray they [the Raglan Relocation Cone Crew] don’t hurt themselves. We’ve all been young… but I just hope they don’t cause themselves some lasting damage.” The Raglan Police is also concerned about this behaviour. Senior Constable Kevin McGartland says while police have not received any complaints about the cones from the roading companies or the businesses targeted, anyone caught coning could be arrested for unlawfully being on a property and for possibly causing damage. “They need to stop because they are risking hurting themselves and damaging property – and no one’s really finding it funny,” he says. Rachel Benn • Raglan Police are requesting help from the public about a burglary at Orca Restaurant and Bar after 3am on Sunday morning. The burglars smashed their way in through the back of the restaurant and took bottles of alcohol. Anyone with any information about the incident is asked to contact the local police.

What's your go to meal when the cupboards are not well stocked? The something out of nothing meal. Pasta or rice are always a useful go-to base food, just boil and add whatever else is available. I always have herbs in the garden, spices in the spice rack, bottles/jars of tomato puree, cheese in the fridge, so can usually create something from those.

with whatever vegetables or suitable leftovers are in the fridge, finished with mozzarella cheese.

What do you usually take to a pot luck? I still often get asked to bring a curry. Usually a chicken curry of some kind – maybe a hot spicy vindaloo or milder, creamy Thai dish, depending on who might be there. Recipe: Easy Chicken Quesadillas

This is a quick and easy meal for busy people. Takes about 20 minutes from fridge to plate. This is for four normal portions (2 quesadillas each). Other ways of making this dish include sandwiching the chicken mixture between two tortillas and either baking or pan frying, but I prefer to fold the tortilla in half and bake until the tortilla is a bit crispy to make it easier to pick up and eat. I usually buy a 15 pack of budget tortillas and use the left overs later in the week to make snack sized pizzas using the rest of the bottle of pasta sauce as a tomato sauce base, topped

Backdoor GromBash: Next generation of surfers on the rise The Backdoor GromBash was held at Manu Bay over the past weekend with over 120 junior surfers from around the country contesting the event in near perfect conditions.

Ingredients • 2 chicken breasts (or 3 boneless chicken thighs) [or a can of black beans for a vegan version] • ⅓ to ½ 700ml bottle of tomato pasta sauce • 2 tsp paprika (smoked if you prefer) • 1 tsp ground cumin • 1 red onion • 1 capsicum (any colour) • Tablespoon or more (to your own taste) pickled jalapenos (or one sliced fresh jalapeno) • 1 tablespoon olive oil • Grated cheese (I like a mix of tasty cheddar and mozzarella) • 8 tortillas (flour or gluten free) Method • Pre heat oven to 180 degrees celsius. • Slice chicken into thin strips. Slice onions, capsicum and jalapenos thinly. • Heat olive oil in a frying pan. Stir fry chicken along with paprika and cumin until brown all over and reduce to medium heat. Add red onions, capsicum and jalapenos (add chili sauce or fresh chili if you like more heat) and cook for another 2 minutes. Then stir in about 250mls of pasta sauce until hot. • Spread half of each tortilla with the chicken mixture, sprinkle with grated cheese and fold in half. • Place in flat dish or on an oven tray and bake or fan bake at 180 for 5 to 10 minutes (until the tortilla starts to turn brown and is a bit crispy at the edges). • Serve with a fresh salad (and add a blob of sour cream to each quesadilla if want to be a bit more decadent).

Raglan’s Taylor Hutchison (top) defended his title in the event winning the Boys Under 20 Division. Two notable youngsters on the rise are Kora Cooper (second from top), winner of the Under 14 Boys Division and Jayden Willoughby (bottom right)) who placed fourth in the same division. The two surfers were standouts amongst forty of their peers over the weekend with Cooper taking out his first win of his short career in the division. Indica Ratima (bottom left) placed third in the Under 20 Girls Division of the event, her best ever result. SNZ

Animal Health Column Raglan Gym - Increase your core strength For Raglan People + their Pets

and activate your core to reduce back pain stability, to build strength and endurance and more. Almost everyone can benefit from using the Oov. Director, physiotherapist – John Appel of Advance Physiotherapy in Hamilton, began using the Oov with his clients and found the results to be outstanding. In his professional opinion the Oov is the best training device he has come across with regard to its success in transferring the benefits of its use to everyday life.

Annual health checks for your pets

Increase your core strength with Oov core classes and your hidden core with a gym weights strengthening and stretching programme.

An annual health check may seem excessive upon first thought, but a lot can change in a year! Once you take into consideration how important it is for us to see our doctor regularly and check in with our dentist every once in a while, you can then begin to appreciate the importance of such visits concerning your pet An annual health check is a time for the veterinarian to fully assess and evaluate your pets overall health. It is also an opportunity for you, as their owner, to bring to light any concerns or issues egarding your pets’ health and wellbeing. Veterinarians are able to thoroughly assess all parameters of your pets’ health, from nose to tail. The check will include taking a temperature, inspecting their teeth, ears, eyes and lymph nodes. Your veterinarian will assess the heart and lungs, and best of all, will listen to and answer any questions or concerns you may have regarding your pet and their health. The veterinarian will also check medical records

and assess whether your pet is due for vaccinations and/or flea and worm treatments. This is also a great time to assess and record your pets’ weight and address any nutrition issues. The health check can also include health of your pet through gestation, parturition and lactation, as well as care of the offspring. Our vets are also able to address some behavioural issues and can refer to specialists if necessary. By having your pet regularly checked by an experienced and knowledgeable veterinarian, potential problems are able to be quickly and efficiently addressed. In summary, an annual health check plays an important role in the care of your pet, and can allow for diagnosis of underlying health issues, which might otherwise have gone unnoticed – this can mean a longer and happier life for your pet and peace of mind for you. To book your special pet in for their health check, please speak to one of our friendly receptionists to arrange a suitable time. Anexa Team

The Oov was designed by an Australian osteopath and neuroscientist to develop a better alternative to using a rolled towel to lengthen the spine. It is ergonomically designed to

fit the human body with a three way curve that follows the natural curve of your spine. Made from highly durable foam, it doesn’t collapse, but pushes back at your body so that your muscles must activate while using it. However, the Oov can be used for far more than back rehabilitation. It can be used to improve movement in joints, to work the inner abdominal muscles, to improve balance and

John Appel is coming to Raglan on Monday 9th of May for a FREE info/trial night on the Oov at 6.15pm at 48 Bow street (not at the gym). Amber Beaumont the gym owner will also be explaining how it is also important to work the hidden core and explain what the hidden core is. WATCH THE LATEST MOVIE RELEASES AT THE OLD SCHOOL ARTS CENTRE There’s no need to drive over the divvy for your movie fix - you can catch the latest releases right here in Raglan at the Old School Arts Centre. There’s a new programme every month, a state-of-the-art screening and sound system plus a cash bar and tasty homemade treats for sale at every showing. Movies at the Old School began way back in January 2006 with the Stairway to Heaven Film Festival organised by Katy Armstrong. Over the years the technology required to show movies has changed dramatically - initially, films were supplied on special CDs, which limited screenings to art house and foreign language movies. In late 2009 the first Raglan Film Festival was held and it’s been an annual and popular fixture - on the Raglan calendar ever since. Regular monthly screenings of new releases started in 2010. Later this was expanded to Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon sessions. Screenings are run by a small team of volunteers and supported by the Old School office staff. Volunteer bakers provide cakes and slices, and a cash bar is also available. Last year, the Old School invested in D-Cinema (Digital Cinema Protocol). This is the same system used by large cinemas and gives the Old School access to a much greater range of films. Having this new system in place enabled the Old School to take part in the nationwide premiere of Hunt for the Wilderpeople – and take out the award for best rural premiere which saw director Taika Waititi and cast members Julian Dennison and Rima Te Wiata visit Raglan on 3 April. 2015 also saw extensive renovations carried out in the Theatre Room. New carpet, a modern sound system and improved black out curtains have all resulted in a first-class cinema experience for locals. Later this year, movie showings will take place on two weekends a month and some Thursdays. And don’t forget that in September the Old School hosts the annual Raglan Film Festival – expect an exciting line-up of films from around the world. May Movies at the Old School: Hunt for the Wilderpeople Saturday 14 May, 5.30pm and Sunday 15 May, 7pm. The Bélier Family Saturday 14 May, 8pm and Sunday 15 May, 4.30pm. Licensed bar and delicious homemade snacks on sale. Adults $14, Concession $12, Children $6. Phone 825 0023 to reserve seats, or email info@raglanartscentre.co.nz.
