Dear Editor Late life choices I hope this account will be helpful for others. It has been a long dilemma – should I stay on in Raglan until I drop or move to a retirement village. I’ve checked the alternatives. Somerset is new and very pleasant but has introduced a hurdle. You have to pay a deposit of $3000 up front. Unfortunately, I have recently discovered the joys of shopping - nothing big, but it all adds up, or perhaps I should say “takes away” from previous savings. So the Hilder Ross retirement seems to be the most practical destination. And very pleasant it is and very handy for my nearest and dearest to call in on her bicycle. Another possibility is Cascades, nicely situated near the entrance to the Hamilton Lake and its walkways. Summer is only beginning to make occasional

appearances and I want to stay in Raglan until autumn. And I will be sorry to lose all the friends and acquaintances I’ve enjoyed here. The library features less now that reading has become a slow process but there is still a friendly welcome when I call in there. Local councillors have a representative there who has to put up with explaining delays which are the responsibility of other layers of the bureaucracy. I’ve lived in Raglan for 17 years, the longest I’ve stayed in one place. It’s hard leaving. Ian McKissack Raglan

Popular MarineMate app gets funding boost The Waikato Regional Councildeveloped MarineMate mobile phone app, which is hugely popular with boaties nationally, has been given a funding boost by Maritime NZ. The national body announced today that it is providing $23,000 to the council for a range of activities, including to refresh and add to the app, which has had at least 35,000 downloads since it was launched in 2014.

MarineMate contains a range of very useful safety information for boaties and some of the $23,000 will be used to improve functionality. The rest of the grant, funded by the fuel excise duty on petrol, will go towards producing fish measurement stickers and waterproof cellphone bags with safety messages printed on them. The stickers help ensure only legal size fish are kept, while the cellphone bags are part of a drive to get boaties to carry two waterproof forms of communication with them. WRC

I

t was obviously “fun” at school in Raglan back around the 1930s – but the five 90-somethings who took centre-stage last Saturday at the opening ceremony of the area school’s 150th jubilee weren’t saying why. “We didn’t do what we should’ve done,” Esma Ansley admitted to a crowded school hall when quizzed by MC Clint Baddeley, Raglan’s retiring ward councillor, about what mischief they got up to back in the day. Pressed for details, all Esma would say was “I can’t remember”. Clint was having none of it. “That’s just an excuse,” he kidded. “No, I’m not telling you,” Esma insisted. “But I’lI tell you what, we had a lot of fun in those days … not much schooling.” Esma did relate the time she tried to ride a horse to school instead of walking. It got whacked on the rump and took off. “And that’s the last time I rode a horse,” observed the 93 year old. Another of the 90-somethings, Esma’s younger brother Tom White, also confessed that “we got up to a bit of mischief, I suppose” but was similarly reluctant to elaborate.

“I think what I’d really like to do is get outta here,” he finally said to much laughter. But Clint made it clear that Tom wasn’t going anywhere as “I’m the teacher this morning”. The lively banter came after Esma and Tom along with old schoolmates Margaret Phillips and Tom Jackson were invited up on stage, together with 92-year-old former Raglan principal Garry Blayney, to cut the jubilee cake. Clint had joked that the five nonagenarians weren’t the reunion organisers’ first choice, and that they “did a wide search to find a 150 year old but failed”. It was a special kind of cake-cutting nonetheless, particularly for Margaret Phillips who had designed, many decades ago, the original school logo with which the cake was decorated. The 92 year old – who came to the function with a younger brother and sister as representatives of the Gibbison clan of nine children schooled at what was then Raglan District High – now lives in Te Aroha. Garry Blayney also came from out of town (Cambridge) but the others all live locally – Tom Jackson in Wallis St,

The carved waharoa at the entrance to the school hall and unveiled in a dawn ceremony.

Esma Ansley in Bow St and Tom White in Nihinihi Ave. Clint pointed out that the nonagenarians on stage were among the forerunners of Whaingaroa as we know it today. Current principal and jubilee committee chairman Malcolm Cox agreed, saying: “We want to honour those before us today.” He called first for the current and past staff to stand, then the ex-students present. “Take a bow, we’re a fabulous family,” he said of the school that has grown over 150 years into an area school with its now 500plus students. Malcolm acknowledged the roles played in the school’s development by his predecessors, among them two who were present at the jubilee – Clive Hamill, now principal at Melville High, and Garry Blayney who most likely is the oldest living former principal of Raglan. Hours before Saturday morning’s official opening there was a dawn unveiling of the waharoa, or gateway, erected at the entrance to the school hall. The collaborative artwork was crafted primarily by former area school students and carvers Kawharu Greensill – a grandson of the late Eva Rickard – Simon Te Wheoro and Kelvin Le Lievre. A memorial miro tree, donated by Whaingaroa Harbour Care, was planted alongside the waharoa later in the morning. Maori legend has it that the bird (also depicted in the waharoa) who eats from the miro tree owns the forest, but the bird who eats from the tree of knowledge will gain the world. Malcolm told the Chronicle this week that there had been a “wonderful camaraderie” among the 300 or so who registered for the jubilee. He also praised both the NZ Army 161 battalion, which catered at Friday night’s ‘mix and mingle’, and renowned local chef and caterer Colin Chung who did a “brilliant” job at Saturday’s reunion dinner. A Sunday church service, a walking tour of the town and a trip up to the Te Uku windfarm in mini-vans were among other activities arranged over the jubilee weekend. Edith Symes

unable to find anywhere for his family to live in the popular seaside town.

As the population begins to swell for the summer, Raglan is desperately in need of a third police officer, a position that has been vacant since the end of June, but rental properties are as scarce as hen’s teeth and real estate agents are even struggling to get properties to sell. Raglan Chamber of Commerce deputy chairman Geoff Kelly told the Chronicle that the chamber was working with Ray White and LJ Hooker to find a rental property it could lease long term to be used as a police house. “There was an officer in Gisborne who came to check out Raglan and he liked it … He came to visit, liked the town … everything was great but he has a family and he can’t find somewhere to live.” Geoff said the situation was disgraceful, that Raglan was desperately in need of a third police officer but that there was no accommodation available for one. “They sold the police house for $800,000 and now here we are as a community having to beg, borrow and steal … that’s typical of the National Government.” Geoff said the chamber would help pay for the rent of the house if it was too expensive. It would be kept on as a police house to ensure that such a situation did not arise again. Constable Raewyn McLachlan confirmed that a police officer had turned down a job in Raglan but said she was not in a position to comment on whether that was due to the rental situation. “The position has been re-advertised. “There are two of us, it’s very busy and quite often one of us is on leave or off work, leaving only one officer on duty.” She said she welcomed any community effort that would help to get another officer in town.

“We want someone here as quickly as possible.” Ray White property manager Russ Adams said he had had two police officers looking for rental properties in Raglan. One, a woman, said she needed something in January, which Russ said was more manageable than finding something right now. “A house for a police officer would be top of our list because we need another one here in Raglan.” Both Ray White and LJ Hooker have 2030 people on waiting lists for rental properties. A number of Raglan families or residents have had to move out of town because they’ve been asked to vacate their rental properties and have been unable to find anywhere else to live. Russ said he even had a situation where a woman was refusing to leave her rental property because she had nowhere to go. There has been some speculation on the Raglan Notice Board Facebook page that the rental problem is due to people listing their properties on BookaBach rather than as permanent rentals, and that property owners are throwing out tenants just before summer. Russ said he thought that was “rubbish”. “I just don’t see it … there may be one or two families caught up in that but not generally. “All those short-term rentals have always been there … there were probably more (before) than there are now.” He said many of the houses that might have sat empty in winter in the past had been sold or were being rented out. And the majority of people buying property in Raglan were doing so to live here, which meant fewer rentals. “The bottom line is it is about the amount of people coming here.” Russ said Ray White managed about 115 rental properties, down from about 140-145 just over a year ago. “We have taken a massive hit – about 25 houses in the last 16 months.”

Ray White owner Dave Hanna said the rental situation was “desperate straits for people”, and finding a house “out of the blue” was impossible. He said in the past it was always difficult to find a rental house at this time of the year but “we have been scrambling for more than half a year now”. “I think it is because nobody has baches any more. “We used to turn baches over quickly, because people would buy and sell them for a profit, and they would be rented out. Now we have no new listings so we have no rentals.” Ray White has fewer than 30 houses for sale on its books compared with 180 two years ago. “There’s a huge shortage of houses at the moment. “Raglan probably needs another 100 houses right now.” Former Raglan resident of seven years Lyn Revill recently moved to Owhango, 20 kilometres south of Taumarunui, after the lease came up on her waterfront Okete property and she had been unable to find another rental. Lyn, who has a 14-year-old daughter, two dogs, a cat and a cockatiel to look after, said she had never been so stressed in her life. “I was not happy at all. I love Raglan – it is where my heart will always be. “My daughter hated the move and cries every night.” Many people looking for rental properties have posted requests on Raglan Notice Board, including looking for caravans or a patch of dirt on which to put a cabin. LJ Hooker Real Estate Raglan investment property manager Sandra Bowditch said she was getting rental inquiries every week from people who lived overseas and wanted to move to Raglan. “There are not enough houses to go around. Raglan is popular. People want to live here.” Inger Vos

Fleeing drink-driver crashes outside cop shop drink-driver was arrested and A charged after crashing outside the police station on Sunday, as he was fleeing police.

Constable Dean McMillan said the male driver, “an out-of-towner”, had hit a stationary vehicle and two others in Bow St and had tried to escape. He has been charged with a variety of offences and would appear in court, Dean said.

Dean said shopkeepers had told him that it was the busiest Labour Weekend that Raglan had ever had. He had to spend a couple of hours on Sunday directing traffic at the one-way bridge, which was backed up, either side, to Stewart St and Poihakena Marae. Also on Sunday, a 9-year-old girl was flown to Waikato Hospital by rescue helicopter after getting caught in a rip at Ngarunui Beach at about 6.30pm.

The lifeguards were no longer on patrol, and a surfer had rescued the girl from the water. It was reported that the girl was in a stable condition. Dean said he had had a busy weekend being the sole Raglan police officer on duty. He said he had worked the days with out-oftown police officers covering the night shifts. Inger Vos

Extra patrols to enforce lifejacket rule aglan water users can expect an R increase in patrols to enforce lifejacket rules this summer with Waikato Regional Council helping Maritime NZ with its new “no excuses” drive.

Maritime NZ announced the new “no excuses” drive last week as part of Safer Boating Week. In the Waikato, people failing to carry the required number of lifejackets on vessels out on the water are fined up to $200. WRC maritime services team leader Richard Barnett said the council’s boats would be assisting Maritime NZ officers to do educational and enforcement work as part of the intitiative. “Over summer, at various times, there will be council harbour masters patrolling at Raglan and enforcing lifejacket rules,” said

Richard. “It’s mostly business as usual for us at this stage as we’ve had a no excuses policy for some time, but we will also work with Maritime NZ to develop a programme of extra patrols around the region as part of the national drive. That will include Raglan.” Richard said people on boats out on the water must each have a lifejacket and wear them at all times if the boat was 6 metres or under in length, or on all vessels at times of heightened risk such as crossing the bar. “We approach everyone on the harbour: boaties, kayakers SUPs. I know this because I have done so myself.” Richard said last summer Raglan boaties had “a very good record” of carrying enough life jackets. “We urge all people to follow the lifejacket rules to help keep themselves, their families and friends safe.” Inger Vos

World champion lives in Raglan Chamber of commerce to install more CCTV cameras in town after burglars target commercial premises

R

aglan’s Grant Tyrrell didn’t just win a gold medal at the UCI Track Cycling Masters World Championships in Manchester – he beat a 17-times world champion veteran in the process. “I’m pretty stoked to get the gold, it’s what I wanted: it’s a world title. They can’t take that away from you,” says Grant, who won the scratch race in the men’s 55-59 year age group. He had entered the championships last year and won a slew of medals – but not a gold. Of Larry Nolan, from the United States, who was hot on his tail in the last lap, Grant says: “He’s a bit of a legend.” Larry came in third place. Grant and Larry were part of a breakaway pack of four riders behind the leading bunch until the last lap when Grant made his successful sprint to the finish. The 55-year-old reckons he had a lead of about 8-10 metres. It’s not a timed event, he says of the scratch race. It’s 30 laps around a track, a distance of 7.5 kilometres, and “first over the line wins”. Twenty-four riders compete at one time, and Grant won his heat also. Grant came seventh in the individual pursuit – “I didn’t have a very good day” – and fourth in the points race. Last year, he won silver in both races. Grant also competed in the team pursuit.

“We broke the world record before we left but one of the guys had a really bad day and we came sixth.” The week of racing was held at the National Cycling Centre in Manchester from October 1-7. Grant trained for seven months for the event, in the garage at his home. “I have an indoor trainer, it’s all computerised so it tells you everything you need to know. “Inside tracks are a closed environment so the conditions are always the same. You don’t have to worry about wind, weather, and there are no hills.” The “monotonous” effort of up to 2½ hours on that stationary bike paid off, and not just in a gold medal! Grant now has bragging rights with his very own rainbow jersey, too. What that means is that Grant can wear that jersey in a scratch race anywhere around the globe and other competitors will know he’s a world champion in that event. He’s also entitled to wear rainbow sleeves in any event he competes in. “If you were a young bloke, Cycling New Zealand would buy all your clothing for you (with rainbow sleeves) but not when you are an old fella,” Grant laughs. Inger Vos Mark Hamilton will guide you through the basics of photography to give you a better understanding of your camera and how to use it to produce stronger images. Topics covered will be, Camera functions, exposure, composition and photographic genres. The workshop is a combination of theory at the venue with an open discussion. The second half of the workshop will be based on practical session getting out and about capturing images around Raglan. Then return to the venue to critique and discuss the images taken then discussions about selecting your best image for a follow up Photography Exhibition Jan 2017. The workshop is suitable for the beginner and intermediate photographer that have a desire to take better photos. This workshop will help to build own knowledge and skills to advance your photography to the next level and structured in a way that will appeal to all levels.

‘Mark picked up his first camera in his late twenties which has led to a career within the industry as a freelance photographer where he currently runs his own commercial photography business’ You will require a digital camera or DSLR to get the most benefit from this workshop & note pad.

The hit on the commercial premises comes at a time when Raglan is one police officer down, after senior constable Kevin McGartland left at the end of June. Chamber of Commerce deputy chairman Geoff Kelly said the chamber was working with police to secure and install the cameras, which will come at a cost of about $4000 to $5000. Last week, All Style Tattoo shop and the Wainui Rd Supermarket were burgled on early Tuesday morning, and the Herbal Dispensary was broken into that night. In late August, Black Sands, Roll Up, Orca and Raglan Bakery were broken into. Constable Raewyn McLachlan said the police appreciated the chamber's offer to put up more CCTV cameras for in town. “There are not enough CCTV cameras in town.” The police have three cameras and some businesses have their own which also look out on the street. Raewyn said it appeared that commercial premises were currently being targeted. She said although none of the burglars had been identified on any cameras, including inside the premises, “we are not giving up just yet”. “We are hoping that some information will come in that will lead to catching the offenders.” Raewyn said there was no evidence to prove that local residents were behind the break-ins. “We can only supposition. Merely the fact that we have the burglaries of commercial premises over an extended period of time … it could be the same people, but again there is no evidence.” Raewyn said Raglan needed another officer “as quickly as possible”. “There are two of us, it’s very busy and quite often one of us is on leave.” She said the position had been advertised and offered to an applicant who turned it down. The position had been re-advertised, but recruitment was a long process, she said. Geoff, who owns the Herbal Dispensary with Bronwyn Lowe, said the burglars got into the shop without triggering the alarm system and stole the safe, which was bolted to the floor. They had opened a window with a stay and reached around to remove a piece of timber obstructing the ranch slider, then pulled the ranch slider off its runners. “They didn’t touch anything else. They left the laptops. “We now have a new alarm system,

more cameras, and the place looks like floodlight city at night.” Geoff eventually retrieved the safe from the harbour where it had been thrown off the bridge in Marine Parade after being cut open and cleared of any cash. He said the worst thing about being burgled was how suspicious he had become. “It was definitely targeted. The safe was hidden. No one knew it was there. “They were professionals, not little kids.” Chandu Patel, owner of Wainui Rd Supermarket, said his cameras showed three people in his shop stealing cigarettes and just over $2000 in cash. “The police came and had a look, and the police just put their hands up … there is nothing you can see,” he said. The burglers’ heads were fully covered. Chandu, who was called by security at 4.37am while the burglars were still in his store, said they appeared to be strong in build. “It took about six minutes, within six minutes they had done everything.” The burglars got in through a high window by removing the entire frame without breaking the glass. They had tools to break open the cigarette cabinet. Next door, Tattoo artist Vincent David said all the tools were stolen from the tattoo shop, which did not have an alarm system. The burglars smashed through the glass frontage. In the previous burglaries in August, money was taken from Roll Up, Black Sands and the Raglan Bakery. Orca owner Corinna Wells said nothing was taken when the restaurant and bar was broken into on the same night as the bakery and Black Sands. “We had a look on the cameras. The person was wearing a hood and gloves, his face was wrapped so it couldn’t be seen.” Raglan Community Patrol co-ordinator Narina Hurst said the group needed more volunteers to help the police keep Raglan and the surrounding environs safe. Formerly called the Night Owls, the group patrols the surf beaches, wharf, business areas and car parks when it can. In order to get out every night, more volunteers were needed, said Narina. (Please contact Narina on 825 8473 if you would like to be a volunteer.) “We are not vigilantes, we just keep an eye out and call the police if we see anything.” At this time last year, Raglan was hit by a spate of 10 burglaries in one week. Those burglaries were mainly of private residences but included Raglan Super Value. Inger Vos

Western Cluster Schools kapa haka festival Last Friday, October 21, the annual Western Cluster schools kapa haka festival was held at Horotiu School. This year’s festival was another successful day with kids of all ages, genders and ethnicities taking part in the Māori performing arts event. Western Cluster schools include primary schools south of Ngaruwahia and consist of a dozen or so Waikato schools that share experiences and create opportunities for kids. Sporting events and speech competitions are the usual order but in the past couple of years there has been the addition of a cultural element in the form of the kapa haka festival. Last year the event was held at Raglan Area School. The school carried on the idea of including cultural performing arts that was originally conceived by Ex Waitetuna School principal Jo Reiri. A toka mauri (a symbol that represents the spirit), Te Whare Karioi mō ngā Taiohi o Te Uru, was created by RAS last year to be passed on to the host school for the following year. Waitetuna School fundraiser No Grinch with FeastBox present at Christmas

F spending time with family and or many, Christmas is about

Waitetuna School fundraising committee have organised a wonderful evening to celebrate our school. We are trying to raise money to go towards upgrading parts of the school that are in need of a serious makeover. We have many exciting items that will be up for auction, kindly donated by the people of the community. There will also be collaborative art pieces

made by the children, for example this piece made by the Junior Room. This has taken two terms to make and is still a work in progress. If you are interested in purchasing, but unable to attend on the night, we do have people available to do your bidding for you. Please call Waitetuna school on 825 5827 Completed items will be available for viewing on our school website - www. waitetuna.school.nz - closer to the date.

sharing a traditional meal. But it can also be a time of stress with arguments and feelings of angst over what to serve for that special lunch or dinner. In an effort to help solve this Christmas dilemma, FeastBox has just launched its Christmas food kit options. “Preparing for Christmas is sometimes a bit daunting,” says FeastBox co-founder Rachel Brown. “The pressure of wanting to serve a great meal to family and friends can be overwhelming, and it's not just anxiety over what food to serve – it can also be about who is going to pay for it all. “To help with this, we’re offering a few different meal options and allowing our customers to split the bill and pay in installments.” A FeastBox food kit by Rachel and business partner Tara Wrigley will make your Christmas this year a whole lot easier and a lot more fun. The ingredients for delicious courses will be delivered to your door, thereby removing the stress of creating your own menu and a chaotic trip to the supermarket at a busy time of the year. And sharing the cooking experience creates special memories and laughter with family and friends. While Christmas food kits are becoming increasingly popular, emerging start-up FeastBox is tempting customers by doing

things a little differently to the larger industry players. Rachel says customers get to choose their favourite meat or fish for their Christmas meal, and they can specify the size of their dinner or lunch party. The FeastBox Christmas food kits also include sharing platters that are a visual feast as well as mouthwatering. “We're absolutely tiny compared to the likes of My Food Bag so we knew that we had to offer something different with our Christmas FeastBoxes,” says Rachel. “We think our delicious menu designed by award-winning chef Brad King of Falls Retreat will set us apart from our competitors.” The FeastBox food kits come with quality ingredients from small artisanal producers (including Matakana Smokehouse, Hungarian Artisan Co, Lifestyle Meats, Volare Bread and Raglan Coconut Yoghurt) and easy-to-follow recipes to create your dishes. Ingredients used are organic, free range or spray-free where possible. FeastBox is delivering to Auckland/Waikato and BOP addresses this Christmas. FeastBox is a Raglan-based business that specialises in putting together food kits and platters specifically for entertaining. FeastBox started in February 2016. Friends Rachel and Tara work with small, quality food producers who provide the ingredients and passionate chefs who design the menus. For more information, please contact Rachel Brown, ph 0211629362 or 078250001.

TAROT Tool for developing self-awareness

Living Goodness owners Fiona Dykes (left) and Peter Kearns (middle) with Raglan SuperValue Deli manager Maryann Tukiri (right).

iving Goodness has hit the shelves at SuperValue – offering delicious “Living Goodness for a good gut feeling” in the form of flavour packed sauerkrauts and kimchi. Living Goodness was started by husband and wife team Peter Kearns and Fiona Dykes, after Peter began suffering from a health issue a few years ago. After researching alternative therapies to heal himself, Peter became convinced that good gut health was helped by the use of live probiotics and alkalising the digestive system. He began making his own fermented food and successfully healed his gut. Peter and Fiona noticed a lack of fermented foods in New Zealand, so they began hand bottling the first few jars of sauerkraut to sell at a local market. Influenced by their love for cooking, their new venture was set in stone and Living Goodness was launched. Their mission is to share their knowledge of fermented food, while simultaneously unleashing the most delicious range of probiotic foods on the market. Living Goodness uses Himalayan salt, flavoursome herbs and live, friendly bacteria mixed with veges

to create the optimum kraut to give your tummy the right balance for overall health and wellbeing. The fermented veges are then placed in a temperature controlled incubator for a week to a month to create the optimum environment for friendly bacteria to grow. This friendly bacteria helps to release trapped vitamins and minerals from the vegetables, increasing their beneficial value. Building good bacteria in the body aids your digestive system, helping it to break down food that in turn enables the nutrients to be more easily absorbed by the body. Balancing the system can control candida, irritable bowel syndrome and many other intestinal issues. A healthy gut has been shown to build a strong immune system and aid in improving mental health. With six different Living Goodness flavours on offer, there’s a taste for everyone. Stop by the deli at SuperValue and grab a bottle or two. Your tastebuds and your tummy will thank you. New chef heads Left Hand Break restaurant

2016 Aotearoa Maori Titles presented by Evitan Events

Raglan Club manager Chris Laurie, left, and new chef Chrissie Pyne.

After a busy Labour Weekend, the staff at the Raglan Club are back to work this week with a brand new chef on board to head their restaurant, Left hand Break. Making the move from Tauranga, new chef Chrissie Pyne is hoping to serve up “good, homecooking-style food that looks gourmet”, as she settles into her new role. Currently the new menu feature classics like “Homemade Smoked Fish Pie”, “Lamb Fry and Bacon” and family favourite, “Homemade Macaroni and Cheese”. With the addition of a new kids’ area for children to play in while parents sit down and eat their meals, the team at the Raglan Club hope to provide a family-friendly environment to accompany their family friendly menu. The restaurant will be opening this Friday night with the launch of the new menu and some chef’s specials as well. Originally completing her chef's training with the Royal New Zealand Navy, Chrissie says she was drawn to become a chef as, growing up, she always had a thing for uniforms and really liked the look of the Royal New Zealand Navy

uniform. Although she soon found out that chefs wore different uniforms to the sailors. “I was actually a bit upset that I had to wear a different uniform to everybody else,” laughs Chrissie. Having run her own BYO restaurant in Beach Haven, Auckland, as well as studying and working as a social worker for a number of years, Chrissie enjoys the challenge of working in a high-pressure environment. “I definitely thrive on the pressure,” she says “I’m very fortunate that my experiences have given me the skills to manage working in stressful environments. I really try to focus on looking after the team, as well, so that they feel like they have somebody caring about them.” As the busy summer period gets closer, the Raglan Club hopes it will also be opening for brunch by the end of November and develop the Left Hand Break into a fully fledged restaurant with table service. Left Hand Break Restaurant open Wednesdays to Saturdays from 6pm. Wednesdays: Midweek roast night. Call 078258288 for more information.

The Karioi Maunga ki te Moana project is a community-led conservation and education project that aims to restore biodiversity at a landscape scale from the mountain to the sea. Although a large component of the work takes place on the mountain – trapping invasive predators that threaten native birds - – the restoration work is focussed on bringing back a remnant population of seabirds (Grey Faced Petrel / Oi) once abundant on the mountain. Seabird breeding sites along the coastal cliffs are actively monitored and breeding burrows protected through the project trapping network.

Karioi Rangers – a new generation of environmental leaders! Its pouring with rain and the wind is strong – another cold, wintery, west coast afternoon. While most people stay indoors in this kind of weather, Karioi Rangers braved the elements every week over the winter months. The program, for kids aged 9-13 years old, ran for the first time this year (an advanced step from the ‘Karioi KIDS’ program that has been run for the last 4 years), aims to enhance curiosity in the natural world and a love for nature through practical place-based experiential learning. Activities are based around Mt Karioi diverse ecosystems with a focus on water, land and sea.

As part of the program, Rangers also engage with local professionals working in the fields of conservation and environmental science. Our hope is that this may lead them to explore future learning and work opportunities in these fields. Our inspiration? To help inspire the next generation of locals to be passionate stewards of this incredible ecosystem they are blessed to be a part of. Without the powerful voice of these young people, there is a risk of losing the magic that happens where the Mountain meets the Sea.

Our Karioi Rangers are inspired and equipped to contribute to local environmental issues and become independent volunteers for the Karioi project giving them problem solving, teamwork, leadership skills and self confidence, while also having a whole heap of fun.

“I started trapping predators in my own backyard in

June. Little did I know how many possums and rats were lurking within. In the first month I caught 24 possums and 3 rats!! Since then I’ve caught another 12 possums and 7 rats! The forest that is part of my backyard is lush with new seedlings and since starting trapping I’ve had tui and keruru visiting regularly. It’s pretty motivating with such a result to keep going.”

Join the Karioi Backyard Hub The Karioi Backyard Hub is a trapping initiative set up by the Karioi Maunga ki te Moana Biodiversity project. The backyard hub aims to support and educate people to trap for predators around their own home. It’s an opportunity for all residents to contribute to the volunteer work that has been happening since 2009 on Karioi Maunga. It’s easy! Contact us at www.karioimaunga.co.nz or email karioi.backyard@arocha.org.

• Volunteer - Trapping, working bees or share your talents We will arrange a time to meet and set you up with appropriate traps and the skills to use them – then you can start trapping! We encourage people to record what they have caught online through the TrapNZ database. This helps give us a really useful picture of what pests are out there and how many – plus you can compare your results to your neighbours and friends and see what they are trapping – some of us are always up for a bit of competition eh? You might not have the time or inclination to go into the bush or climb up Karioi Maunga – but the beauty and simplicity of this: is that you do this from the comfort of your own garden with only a small amount of effort and you’ll see the results in your own back garden!
