Entrepreneurship A
magnificent word that carries a big idea. It has given the world so much that is good, noble and inspiring in almost any field of endeavour you care to mention.
Entrepreneurship has traditionally been almost exclusively associated with business start-ups. Names like Henry Ford, Sir Richard Branson, Bill Gates, Larry Page and Estee Lauder come readily to mind. However, for the last 20 years or so it has also been applied to many other areas of enterprise including existing businesses, the social sector and public-service institutions. In fact, in this rapidly changing world it is the business owner and/or manager with a strong entrepreneurial flare who will lead the pack. Entrepreneurship is the process of discovering new ways of combining resources. It’s someone or an organisation that adds value to the
economy. Synonyms are: innovation, risk-taking, creativity, agent of change. An entrepreneur then is a person who has a capacity for risk taking and an ability to not only think outside the box but to deliver smarter solutions to old problems. So here are a few ways you might improve your entrepreneurship and innovation: 1. Find places, spaces and times to be creative … to think new thoughts. You need to clear the noise and clutter from your brain. 2. Use of Think Tanks, Brain Storms and Blue Sky Thinking techniques. Edward De Bono’s ‘six coloured hats’ is a great technique as well. 3. Use of doodling, tinkering, constant curiosity. The Google practice is a fascinating story around this idea. 4. Give yourself freedom to fail. It's the best learning available, but hopefully not too costly. Alan Vink

More students stick with RAS for NCEA years
T
he school roll at Raglan Area School has climbed to over 500 with a record number of students staying on for their intermediate and secondary education rather than heading over the divvy.
RAS deputy principal Bronwyn Haitana, who heads the years 0-10 students, says in the past two years she has really concentrated on the middle school (years 7-10) and how those students were being taught. “Good progress” has meant more students staying on to further their education. Bronwyn says there are currently 135 students in years 7-10, up from about 90 a couple of years ago, with an increase of about 50 students across the school. “I have 38 year 9s in my class,” says Bronwyn, and there are 42 students in year 11 doing level 1 NCEA. “That is unbelievable.” Students used to leave RAS after year 6 in their droves to attend intermediate in Hamilton, and certainly by their high school years (year 9) the majority were travelling over the divvy for a better education. “I’ve had no year 9s who didn’t go back,” Bronwyn says of her class from last year, and of her year 9 students from two years ago “pretty much all of them have stayed” to do NCEA level 1. “If we keep the cohorts we are getting, every year we will be building about 30 students.” Bronwyn, who has been at RAS for five years, came from a job with the NZ Police, working with youth in school and looking at troubling behaviour. “That work that I did really helped me come here and clean it up,” she says,
remembering her first year at RAS, when the perception of the school was that of a “rough, gang school”. “We’re not tolerating some things that we used to. “My first year – pretty much – in school was ‘oh my god’. I couldn’t keep teachers. “The year 7-10 cohort of students was so dysfunctional it was affecting the whole school, the primary school. No kids were staying. It was really ugly. It really dragged down the tone of the school. “I couldn’t believe the morale of the teachers, and the students felt the same – ‘our parents can’t afford to send us to a decent school’. “Teachers didn’t want to admit they worked at Raglan because people were bagging the school so much.” Bronwyn thought: “If we can get this area right, get it pumping, all the other areas will start to come right, too.” She says she headhunted teachers and focused on engaging students, as the middle years are where kids get bored at school. “They’re not going for NCEA credits so what’s the point?” She also looked at ways to nourish students’ thinking, building a learning culture. “Harping on doesn’t work, it’s about building communications skills – doing things that build learning. We are looking at relationships instead of power. “The thing that people are noticing now is the year 11s have really good learning skills.” At the senior school level (year 11-13), a huge effort has been made to introduce more subjects or to offer courses by correspondence. This year, performing arts
is being offered for the first time to NCEA level 1 students. Bronwyn says she prioritises budget spending on subjects. RAS has also teamed up with the Wintec Waikato Trades Academy, offering students the opportunity to study a pre trade apprenticeship. Bronwyn is now into her third year of putting her heart and soul into making changes at the school and says she feels quite tearful about it because she has put in so much time and energy. “I’m really proud of our year 7-10 team. The teachers are really proud, they have really stepped up to the concept of change – and I have made a lot of changes. “Staff feels supported, students feel supported. “It’s just a really nice feel here. “The parents’ perceptions have really changed. Parents really trusted me that I would do good for their kids. “We are keeping the students that we have got and getting students from Te Uku and Te Mata … we have had a lot from Te Uku this year.” Raglan parent Bernadette Gavin says Bronwyn is the main reason why she and partner Phil McCabe have kept their daughter, Sequoia Gavin-McCabe, at RAS for her NCEA level 1 year. “I can’t sing her praises loud enough. She is so devoted and passionate about what she is doing. “We thought about it a lot and came close a number of times to sending her over the hill.” Bernadette says the school acknowledged that because it is small it cannot provide the same opportunities as Hamilton schools but “pretty much whatever they can do to help Sequoia to stay they have done and they are very easy to talk to”. “The teachers Sequoia has had have been really amazing people and dedicated to their job.” Parent Veita Harding says her and husband John chose RAS for their daughter to attend year 9 for many reasons. “RAS offers a stimulating and exciting environment with a strong focus on student engagement that we felt our … child would thrive in. Each school visit we have seen staff who are vibrant, enthusiastic and passionate about their school. As parents we want our children to have strong connections to this area, to have a strong sense of identity and self worth and we believe that our local school can contribute to this. We also want to keep life simple and our kids local.” Inger Vos

Dave Currie at home in his garden.
ecently retired Dave Currie answers the door barefoot in a pair of pink (once red?) cotton drawstring pants and a New Zealand T-shirt. On his wrists he wears an Indian bead bracelet and a piece of uncarved pounamu. One could be forgiven for thinking this was the new Dave who just wants to be, unencumbered by a public life – he retired as CEO from College Sport Auckland in October and has recently stepped down as chairman of the Raglan Chamber of Commerce because it’s time to get selfish, “do stuff for me”. But no, Dave has always worn what could be perceived as hippy trinkets, even throughout his career as chef de mission for 10 years for the New Zealand Summer Olympics and Commonwealth Games teams. Sitting at his kitchen bench, in a lovely light space he has created in his Government Rd home, he fingers the beads and the raw piece of greenstone. The Indian beads of stone were a gift, probably during his time in Delhi for the 2010 Commonwealth Games. They stand for courage and support. The pounamu his friends gave him before an operation for bowel cancer in 2003, “I have worn it ever since”. “And I wear a pendant as well,” he pulls out another piece of greenstone from under his T-shirt; also a gift from his time as chef

de mission. “That’s a nice reflection for me from back to the time.” Apart from this quiet reflection, and a forced admission that the highlight of his career was when he was trying to become an Olympics marathon runner – “I look back on those years with fondness. I love training; I love running. That formed the foundation of the rest of my career, really” – there is no looking back on life’s work for Dave, who was made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2009. “I don’t live in the past. I have had some amazing experiences, there are amazing things I have done, but when they are done they are done. “We have to get on. I want to be defined by the things I continue to do, not the things I have done. It’s more about the things I can still do.” The 71-year-old, who has lived permanently in Raglan since the early 2000s, says for him retirement is about getting into life. “Up until now I have had a career,” and most recently that meant living in Auckland, Monday to Friday, for two years, holding the reins for College Sport, “107 secondary schools, 100,000 students, 45 different sports”, and “always being asked to do stuff”. “I’ve done enough doing. I decided I wanted to get selfish, do some stuff for me. “I don’t want to be in a public position any more.” That has also meant walking away from the Raglan Chamber of Commerce because, while Raglan is important to Dave, there is a lot happening in the community regarding growth and change. “There’s a lot of energy there for the next few years and I don’t want to do that. “There needs to be generational change, really. I am an old bugger. If the chamber is to remain relevant it has to be relevant to a new and younger thriving business community.” Dave will always have a view, however, and he believes that the Raglan Naturally document is really important for the development of the town. “There needs to be a link between the community board and the chamber, the business community, and the arts, what they are all doing.” The Rangitahi Peninsula development “will change the dynamic of Raglan”, as will new business enterprises. It’s about holding on to what attracted us all to Raglan in the first place but also making sure we don’t get stuck in a time warp, arguing the petty stuff.

“The community does have a right to help shape what our community will look like. “Uniqueness is what drew us all to Raglan. Lets not lose the essence of the reason why we are all here. We don’t want to end up like everywhere else, lose our identity. There needs to be a balance. “Through Raglan Naturally, that’s the way to do it. “People have got to learn to be better at talking to one and other about things that grieve us. “If we do nothing and don’t engage we will wake up in five years’ time and go how the hell did that happen! “If you don’t engage in the process then don’t complain in 10 years’ time.” For his part, Dave plans on putting his energy into “the environmental space, now”. He loves gardening, grows all his own veges, and in his lifetime has developed two 2-acre gardens, one in Raglan at his former Greenslade Rd property. “The whole environmental thing is very important to me … We don’t have a right to leave the planet as a worse place for our grandchildren. “I look at what my generation has done in the last 50 years and it ain’t good. “I would rather be out setting traps and planting trees. I could do something helpful.” In the meantime, Dave is enjoying watching the rhythm of life from his kitchen window, out across the harbour – the tide coming in and out and the sun’s path across the sky and across the different seasons. Productively, he’s been helping his sister renovate her house, although a phonecall with his plumber mid-interview reveals a bit more: “We have wrecked the house,” Dave tells him, “the sooner we can put it back together the better”. His sister is retiring here, one of the many drawn to Raglan for its natural beauty, “more Auckland refugees coming down”. Dave continues to keep fit and be active with yoga – “that’s emotionally and physically great for me”, mountainbiking and tramping. “I walked around Ruapehu a few weeks ago. “I’m going to bike around the East Cape, up around Waikaremoana, walk around the lake… “I want to go to Europe. I’ve done a lot of travel through the work I have done but didn’t get a chance to really see anything.” But there is one thing he isn’t going to do and that is “let myself get old and cynical”. The big OE in the new millennium
The Chronicle chats with locals about their overseas experience.
Studies on ice as 17 year old learns ropes in the Rockies W heat of Waitangi Day, young skier hile Raglan basked in the summer
he Raglan Point Boardriders
by the original surfers of Manu Bay, and was first known as The Hamilton Point Boardriders Club.
Ella McLeod-Edwards was relishing 20 centimetres of powder snow at Panorama, a top mountain resort in the Canadian Rockies.
“Another 20 centimetres tomorrow,” she told the Chronicle, smiling from the other side of the world via FaceTime and devouring a bowl of curry for dinner. She’d made the curry the day before in the three-storey resort apartment at Toby Lodge that she shares with three others. Ella had skied all day while shadowing – and being mentored – by a ski patroller. She’d helped open ski runs, moved snow fences on pistes and among trees to make safe areas for tourists, dealt with one unfortunate skier’s fractured arm and, at the end of the day, learnt how to do a sweep to clear the mountain for off-hours. The temperature was minus 10 or 15 degrees, she wasn’t sure. “Once past negative 10 it all kinda feels the same,” the Raglan teen explained. “It has gone down to negative 30,” she added, unfazed by the freezing temperatures just a month into her big OE. Ella has 14 weeks all up to enjoy the familyfriendly Panorama Mountain Resort before possibly setting her sights on a job in either Australia or New Zealand as a qualified ski patroller. To become that “elite first responder” in terms of emergency medical and rescue services in a snow zone anywhere in the world, she must complete two courses. She’s well into the first – seven weeks of ski patrolling. Just about every day she’s off to catch the first chairlift of the morning to learn as much as she can on the snow. There may be no car-parking worries but it’s intensive stuff, admitted last year’s Raglan Area School head girl. She jumps out of buildings to practise rope safety, for instance. “That’s why she needed very good travel insurance,” interjected mum Fiona Edwards from the family’s home in Marine Parade. Soon Ella will move on to some specialised training in the use of explosives for avalanche control. “Yes I’m hoping to use explosives,” confirmed the 17 year old, still smiling. Near the end of the month she’ll switch to her second course – ski instructing. That will occupy her about four days a week for four weeks, and she’ll still be mentored by a ski patroller. “I’d probably prefer to be a ski patroller (rather than a ski instructor),” she admitted. “I like the first aid.” For years now Ella’s hit the ski slopes with her parents at Ohakune or Wanaka during most winter school holidays.
T Club was established in 1963
She skis at more than 100kmh – her mum reveals – jumps off cliffs and has trained herself to do backflips. She has competed and won silver, regionally, at Ohakune. So when her gap year choice came down to either au pairing in Finland – and getting to ski during her time off – or “taking a long holiday on the slopes” with the UK-based Winter Sports Company, it was no contest. Ella did however have to study up on a 1000page outdoor emergency care manual before departing. And her two courses cost $7000 each, which she paid herself through years of weekend and holiday work locally. “I’ve done my fair share of the mundane,” she told the Chronicle. She described her OE so far as “really cool”. Away from home for the first time, she was learning simple things like how “very expensive” food was and how organised you had to be with your washing. She was struck by the fact that “everything’s bigger” in Canada – mountains, roads, signposts, vehicles. “My tiny car at home would fit in the back of a standard-sized ute here!” But she was missing the family pet, Fly, at home. There were working dogs on the slopes, she said, but getting close to them was sadly a no go. Ella’s got plenty beside a reunion with Fly to look forward to when her gap year ends – she will be taking up a deferred scholarship to Otago University where she’ll study the seven years it takes to become a doctor. Edith Symes
Their first contest, The Junior Point Boardriders Competition, was held in 1964 and was won by local Butch Walters, who occasionally still makes his way out into the lineup today. As the Boardriders have evolved over the years, they have continued to host year-round contests and community events. Last year the Boardriders held the first ‘King of the Single Fin’, bringing an annual day of retro-nostalgia to The Point. This coming Saturday, February 18, will see the 2017 King of the Single Fin presented by LJ Hooker. Because Raglan is known worldwide for its surf, the nonstop stream of visiting surfers can seem quite daunting at times. The Boardriders’ contests are familyfriendly events that give locals a chance to enjoy Manu Bay without the crowded lineup. The club helps to provide a home base and sense of ownership among surfers in the community. Club member Marcus Hodgkinson hopes to see the Boardriders grow as a staple for up-and-coming local surfers, providing opportunities for kids to get more involved in the water and have something to call their own.
Boardrider clubs around the country are coming together to strengthen the collective surfing opportunities available. The clubs have set out to host various championships throughout the year to help find and establish New Zealand’s Premier Boardrider Club. A team of Raglan Point Boardriders will head to Whangamata in March for The Hurley New Zealand Club Championship to compete in team and individual events. The LJ Hooker King of the Single Fin 2017 has a little something for everyone, including the infamous Pie Eating Contest. Surf categories for the day include: Single Fin Retro, Log, Twin Fin, Anything Goes/Most Outrageous (i.e., door, ironing board, inflatable device, chilly bin lid, etc.) and Past Winners. Plus extra points will be given out for the best dressed. Anyone can enter the contest on the day, which will kick off around 9am. Local shaper and craftsman Mark Camenzind has handcrafted an iconic Wilson single fin board for the contest, which was sprayed by local master artist Neil Wernham. The board is up for raffle with all proceeds going to the Raglan Point Boardriders. The board is on display at Raglan Surf Co with tickets on sale for $5 and a winner will be chosen on the day. For more about the Raglan Point Boardriders, find them on Facebook ‘Raglan Point Boardriders’. Karamea Puriri

Those aged 7 and above play home and away in the boys’ and girls’ leagues that run through terms 2 and 3. Secondary school aged players keen to play this winter will be able to enrol through Raglan Area School. We know everyone is still at the beach in Raglan at this time of year but with the online system these days we need to align with the clubs in Hamilton – so let your friends know the closing date is March 3, 2017. Please note that for age groups where grading occurs trials will be optional this year. If you have any questions or need help with the online registration call Aaron on 825 0324 or Luca on 825 0096.
Chronicle delivery issues T deliveryman,
he Raglan Chronicle and our Graham, would like to extend an apology for the unreliable delivery of the Chronicle at the beginning of the year. Graham Mortlock has been delivering the Raglan Chronicle each week, rain or shine, for years, and occasionally things out of his control happen which delay the paper from being delivered promptly. Graham would like to extend his personal apologies to the community and if you do not receive your paper in a timely matter then he is happy for you to give him a call on 022 132 8506 and he will deliver to you as soon as possible.
The Chronicle would like to note that Graham does not oversee the rural deliveries, and most often the week’s paper is delivered when the RD postman does his mail run on Fridays or Saturdays. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. Rural households can alternatively find the paper at the Te Uku Raglan Roast or Te Uku Store. Each week the paper is also placed in shops around the CBD and can be found online at http://raglanchronicle.co.nz.
