Tenth annual Arts Weekend hits Raglan this Easter I t’s a highly anticipated arts event in the North Island, and this year is even more special as Raglan celebrates its tenth annual Raglan Arts Weekend this Easter.

Locals and visitors alike will be treated to the biggest Arts Weekend yet, where 37 artists across a very diverse range of media will share their creative talents over three days. “Raglan has been an inspiring place for many artists, and we’ve seen top internationally acclaimed talent first start out in our event, which is both humbling and amazing,” says Nicky Brzeska, co-ordinator of the Arts Weekend. “The Weekend gives everyone a chance to connect with artists and artworks and have a sneak

peek into studios and creative processes which aren’t usually that accessible.” Visitors and locals will get a chance to visit Sam Mathers’ new studio which is being built for the Weekend, as well as some other hot favourites including Miranda Caird, Toni Kingstone, Rick Youmans and The Monster Company. It’s possible to tick off a few artists in one visit, such as Studeo where taxidermy, panel & paint and clay come together, or Palm Prints where Jane Galloway, Stuart Mackenzie and Julian Godfrey reside. The Old School Arts Centre will also host a couple of artist studios, as well as the Preview Exhibition where you’ll be able to get a taste of the arts trail to help you plan your visit. Also on offer

is ‘Eats and Treats’, a collection of delicious food stalls open from 10am-2pm on the Saturday and Sunday. Some foodie favourites include Pie-Kai’s hand crafted pies, the coffee guru Mal and Raglan Chocolate. For full details of each participating artist and directions to their studios, pick up a copy of the official Raglan Arts Trail Brochure, designed by Raglan-based agency Mafia Designs. You can collect them from the Old School Arts Centre, the Raglan i-SITE or various Raglan cafes and galleries. Most studios are open from 10am until 5pm with a handful closing at 3pm over the three days. You can also learn more about each artist at facebook.com/ raglanart or raglanartsweekend. nz.

Good Friday Long Drive Challenge at the golf club

B

ig hitters from far and wide are amped up and about to converge on the Raglan Golf Club. Visiting golfers have been enticed to Raglan with the lure of a $1500 first prize for Good Friday’s Raglan Long Drive Challenge. Interest in the challenge is widespread and visiting golfers will be in town to take on the local talent. Easter will be big at the golf club with Friday’s events backed up with the annual LJ Hooker Easter Saturday tournament the following day. The Long Drive Challenge is a first for Raglan and has created heaps of interest among golfers who fancy their ability to smack a golf ball into the wild blue yonder. “I can’t wait,” said Raglan big hitter Julian “Da Beast”. “Bring it on. I’m keen to see how far some of theses guys can drive a ball. “I’ll be giving it my best shot, that’s for sure. It would be great

if a Raglan player could win that awesome prize.” That challenge has been answered with golfers from north of Auckland to Coromandel in the east and south to Taranaki announcing their intention to be on the tee on Good Friday. “It’s a new event for the club,” said Raglan president Peter Aim. “The plan is to attract new people to the Raglan golf course and hopefully they will enjoy themselves and come back again. “If the day goes well, we can make it an annual event. It’s not all about the long drive, we want all comers to visit the course and enjoy the day. “It will be awesome to watch how far some of these guys can drive a ball.” Visitors will be invited to join in the fun alongside the big bash brigade and they can also chase a handsome prize. The Nearest the Pin competition is open to everyone and as well as prizes for the best shot, there’s a massive incentive added.

“We have a $1000 on offer for the first person to score a hole-in-one during the course of the competition,” the president said. Food trucks, sausage sizzles, music and novelty events are open to the public and will add to the atmosphere. Nearest the Pin and also a putting event will create plenty of interest and everyone is welcome to enter for a $5 fee giving the chance to win attractive prizes. Golf clubs will be available for use in these events or bring your own and maybe spend some time playing 9-holes. Nine holes will be open for use with normal green fee charges applying. “The public are invited to come and join in the fun,” Aim said. “It will be great fun – see you there.” The Long Drive Challenge final will take place at 4pm preceded by the semi-final at 3pm and prizegiving follows around 5pm.

Tamariki touch from left,Albie, Jacqui and Jamon.

T

his week the Chronicle caught up with Jacqui Forbes who has been coordinating the Tamariki Touch competiton for locals as an opportunity to get involved in social sports. Who came up with the idea to offer a regular touch rugby opportunity? It had been something on my mind for a long time, but my first two sons weren't really into touch, it was my third one that was. In the very beginning, I mentioned it to Niki Maniapoto and she was keen to help and Sammy Cowley was too. Johnny and Kala had run a touch module that had children in the teams, but I wanted to start a

touch module just for tamariki. There's lots of touch talent in Whaingaroa. How long has it been running now? Since 2016 I think. What was required to actually make it happen? Not much. In the beginning the hooter and cones were borrowed from Raglan Area School. The balls were lent to us from Ratu Mataira. The fields were marked by Raglan Lawns and the touch refs, Johnny mainly came consistently and parents helped out when needed with reffing, Swanny, Jardon and others. For the last two or three modules we have had Chris a touch ref without kids in the comp, who comes to help out. Dirk

also would pump all the balls up for us. Now we have all of our own equipment. What was your goal /mission? To have fun playing touch, keep fit, and now it's another off screen activity! How much time was involved? Not much, there's no official committee at the moment and I usually make decisions with the parents on messenger. With the beginning modules we would usually have a relaxed meeting at the pub so there was never any stress with organising things. How was it received by the community? I think the dads like it because it keeps their tamariki fit throwing the ball around.

This has positive impacts for the rugby season. I see that too, but for me touch is a real game on it's own, not an off-season sport. I have travelled lots playing touch, and had lots of good times. I love the sport, how fast it is and how much fun scoring touchdowns are - touchdowns in touch always come from the team. What did you learn and gain from the experience? I have really appreciated all the help from everyone, Dianne, Tahi, Vicki, Honey - everyone helps out however they can whenever it's needed. I organise it but I'm away every now and then and others always step in to cover. The sportsmanship that has been displayed on the fields by older players being thoughtful and considerate of younger players has been really inspiring. And on the other hand the gutsyness and determination of younger players playing older teams has been really impressive. Playing with a smaller number of teams in the pool means that sometimes the games aren't matched fairly but the teams and parents take it all in their stride in the usual relaxed Whaingaroa way of doing things. Do you plan to continue next season? Yes. What would you say to others who might be considering volunteering their time for junior sport in Raglan? Travelling to Hamilton sucks and our tamariki here are ridiculously talented. It's better I think for us to create sport in Raglan, rather than spend energy and time going to Kirikiriroa. Even though I have boys myself I'm really interested in developing girls in touch. I think touch is a great sport for girls and I'd encourage parents to encourage their girls to play. If you'd like to help out with Tamariki Touch please get in touch. We run terms four and one. We can't thank Raglan Lawns enough for marking the fields since we started. Tamariki Touch like most things in Whaingaroa is a team effort!

There’s a real buzz in the air at Design Factory NZ

I

Wintec students work with Emma Martin from Xtreme Zero Waste.

ncreasing youth engagement in local government and dealing with waste left behind after major events, are just two of the problemsolving challenges Wintec’s Design Factory NZ students are working on this semester. These Wintec students have signed up for a different type of learning. They originally enrolled at Wintec to study various disciplines, but here, they’ll work together, solve problems and come up with solutions as a team. Not unlike a real-world workplace. Two years ago, Wintec launched Design Factory NZ with 12 students. Now, the roll has increased to 33 students for the current semester and it’s taught in two separate streams. The students come from a range of disciplines including fashion, engineering, sports science, education, IT and management. “It’s amazing to see how this has grown from a pilot programme to a multi-stream class,” says Design Factory NZ Director, Margi Moore. “Having more than thirty students deeply engaged with real-world challenges puts a real buzz in the air.” The 33 students are working in six teams with industry problems provided by four external partners: Hamilton City Council, Genesis Energy, Xtreme Zero Waste and Hauraki District Council over 16 weeks. Their large-scale, complex problems benefit from cross-disciplinary designthinking and problem-solving from creative thinkers outside the organisation. Hollie Blanchard is in her third year of a Communications degree with Wintec’s

School of Media Arts and this year she took the opportunity to add the Design Factory experience to her learning. “I joined the Design Factory because I wanted to work with real-life clients on real projects, and put this knowledge and learning into action,” says Hollie. “I’m enjoying working with others towards an end goal. I have felt very welcomed into the class by my tutors and peers, as we learn more about ways of problem solving and the design thinking process.” The student teams are now working closely with their respective industry partners, and recently, they hosted their first industry breakfast. They were also tasked with the planning, hosting, catering and design of the event. “We hosted 70 staff, industry partners, alumni and students for breakfast. It was a morning full of energy, innovation and connections,” says Moore. “The students use their developed skills to present, start dialogue and even organise the event – all skills that are valuable in developing and presenting ideas in the workplace.” Design Factory NZ has more than twenty students pre-enrolled for the next semester at Wintec and is looking forward to welcoming more participants for the upcoming challenges. Design Factory NZ is part of a Design Factory Global Network (DFGN), a network of innovation hubs based in research institutes and universities across the globe. DFGN is on a mission to create change in the world of learning and research through passion-based culture and effective problem solving. Wintec

Stairmand Threepeat at the Rip Curl Pro Raglan

I

t was a three-4peat for Raglan’s Billy Stairmand today (Sunday 14th April) after blowing away a strong field of domestic surfers at the Rip Curl Pro presented by Corona held at Manu Bay, Raglan. Stairmand was joined by Mount Maunganui surfer Raiha Ensor who claimed the Open Women’s Division. Both surfers now lead the New Zealand Surf Series rankings after three of seven events this year. Stairmand looked unstoppable all weekend and his relentless performances continued into the final as he went on to post a 16.44 point heat total out of a possible 20 points, easily defeating fellow local Luke Cederman in the same one-two scenario as the 2018 event. “Yeah, I mean I keep saying it but my equipment is so good at the moment and it just makes me comfortable when competing” exclaimed Stairmand. “I wanted to put on a show out there because there are heaps of people watching today and also live on Sky Sport” he added.

Stairmand held half of the top ten single-wave scores of the weekend showing his dominance but he was also quick to mention his strategic approach to his heats. “I probably could have got better waves in the final but I was surfing strategically, particularly in that heat and that is all I wanted to do, everyone surfs a heat differently and I just wanted to stick to my game plan.” Stairmand now eyes up two international events in Indonesia and Australia as he hunts down more World Surf League qualification points. “I really want to try and get on tour with Ric (Christie) and Paige (Hareb) and also aim for the Olympics next year.” SNZ All images on this page thanks to Ken Hansen Open Men’s Division Final Billy Stairmand (Rag), 16.44, 1, Luke Cederman (Rag), 13.9, 2, Daniel Farr (Tara), 12.83, 3, Luke Hughes (Rag), 12.53, 4 Open Women’s Division Final Raiha Ensor (Mnt), 13.9, 1, Saffi Vette (Gis), 13.47, 2, Ella Williams (Whmata), 12.3, 3, Jessica Santorik (Rag), 11.03, 4 Jess Santorik
