he ‘Raglan Calendar 2021’ is now on sale at the Raglan Bookshop and Bow St Gallery, both on Bow St, for $20 to raise funds for Friends of Wainui Bush Park. This year’s calendar, with an updated design and images, has been created by Raglan Food Co and features photography by Leonie Anholts. The 2020 calendar sold

out before Christmas, so a few more have been printed this year. Imagery include surfing, as well as many well-known scenes around Raglan and including Te Toto Gorge and Waireinga Falls. Friends of Wainui was formed in 1993, mainly by members of Raglan Ramblers (formed in 1991). Both offer free membership and welcome new participants. Friends of Wainui has work mornings on the second and fourth Monday of the month from 9am. Raglan Ramblers walks usually start at 9am on Wednesdays from James St. Friends of Wainui has planted a bit over 10 hectares of the 140 hectare council reserve with about 15,000 trees. Work is now mainly keeping tracks clear and weeds and pests under control – ring 825 7866 if you'd like to help.

very Wednesday over the past at least 16 years, a group of knitters and crafty folk have met to enjoy a spot of ‘down-time’ and each other’s company. The Circle began with a notice all those years ago in the Chronicle calling for anyone who would like to meet to gather at a café and since that time the group has moved to various locations (all with good coffee!).

Today, the group meets at Orca and any-one is welcome to join. Among highlights in its history has been being awarded a place in the iconic Art to Wear event, for a knitting skirt/poncho and umbrella combination, raising funds for St John Ambulance and other worthy organisations through raffling knitted creations, producing hundreds of beanies and woollen singlets for charity. R

aglan Area School’s year 10 pupils got to tackle everything from measuring blood pressure and testing reflexes to CPR in hands-on health workshops held last week under the tutelage of visiting tertiary students. The local pupils also learnt how to call for help and assess an emergency, apply a bandage, use a stethoscope, count their heart rates and even familiarised themselves with dentistry equipment – all thanks to a Students of Rural Health Aotearoa initiative encouraging pupils to consider careers in country areas. Most of the medical students touring Waikato schools like Raglan’s are from rural backgrounds themselves so are “highly motivated” to encourage young people and give them the realisation that they too can gain a tertiary qualification, says the New Zealand Rural General Practice Network which is overseeing the initiative.

Most importantly, the network says, these students can inspire others like them to become one of the many health professionals “so badly needed” in rural communities. The 10 tertiary students who visited the area school were in training to become doctors, midwives, dentists, pharmacists and the like. The group, who are mostly studying at Auckland tertiary institutions, were led last Tuesday morning to a senior classroom at Raglan Area School by local kaumatua and cultural advisor Russell Riki where a whakatau or informal welcoming ceremony took place. Fellow kaumatua Sean Ellison acknowledged the visitors’ role in taking the time to talk to Raglan’s young people. “You might inspire one of them to walk in your footsteps,” he said. Matua Russell reinforced the message.“Our visiting students are here to

show you what they do ... listen and learn about the (kind of) choices you can make,” he told the predominantly 14 year olds who, national research suggests, are at an ideal age to be considering their future careers. Matua Sean told of the role of his own father, Tom Ellison, as a doctor in the rural sector and the huge responsibility he carried as Raglan’s sole GP for the first two decades of his 45-year practice in town, which started back in 1966. “It was very difficult to get support then because nobody wanted to come to Raglan; now everybody wants to be here,” he quipped, although not always in a professional capacity. The local year 10s then split into five groups for the afternoon workshops using authentic equipment and learning basic principles in a fun, safe and interactive setting. Edith Symes

Light exercise group takes breather to mark milestone Y ou wouldn’t normally expect a fitness class to end a workout with food and cake – but the Raglan Light Exercise Group had special reason last week for a little celebration.

The occasion was the 25th birthday of an enthusiastic group that proudly claims it’s been “out there doing it since 1995 and still going strong”. That makes the exercise classes – if you skip over a forced closure of several weeks because of the Covid-19 nationwide lockdown – the longest, continuously running group of its kind formed with the help of Sport Waikato. Members worked out initially at Raglan Bowling Club, then the church in Taipari Ave. They now meet at St Peter’s Church Hall in Bow St, on Mondays and Thursdays. After the Thursday stint there’s a cuppa and a talk on “everything going on in Raglan”. Total membership is around 50, with up to 30 enthusiasts at any one session. Some of them – a few in their 90s and many in the 70-80 age bracket – have been coming along for well over 15 years, and one from the very outset.

secretary/treasurer Graham Hubert told the Chronicle. The fit and agile 74 year old – a keen fisherman and gardener – reckons the twiceweekly sessions have been key to keeping him and wife Barbara healthy over the past 15 years.

But for length of membership, no-one can beat nonagenarian Renee Doig who began way back in 1995 and is still going strong. Renee says nursing staff couldn’t believe her core strength when she was in hospital having a hip replacement. Graham adds an optician was similarly amazed at the quality of his eyes. “We do eye muscle exercises,” he explains. “It’s those little things that help.” Add to that the camaraderie enjoyed by the over-50s group and they’re all benefitting, he insists. “We just want to be strong and stable in our homes (as we age).” Despite having built up an impressive collection of equipment over the years – exercycles, treadmills and rowing machines – the light exercise facility is not a gym, Graham points out.

So why the longevity of the Raglan Light Exercise Group – and the consistent popularity of its classes?

Members get results through stretching bands and weights plus working ligaments, muscles, tendons and joints from neck to toes. “We know this makes a difference in daily lives.”

“It’s all about maintaining mobility in our twilight years,”

Central to the workouts is instructor Hinekai Gotty who is

Cutting the celebratory cake. From left: longtime members Barbara and Graham Hubert, instructor Hinekai and president Noleen McCathie. “very much aligned to our group”, says Graham, taking time to cater for individual needs. She has even taken a class or two to the local marae – at the request of kaumatua Sean Ellison – to show elderly Maori the benefits of light exercise. The group was formed under the guidance of Sport Waikato and local medical professionals. Early on it got some financial help through a Waikato Health ‘Green Prescription’ initiative, and

later it received a $2000 Raglan Community Board grant thanks largely – Graham recalls – to the efforts of then-councillor Clint Baddeley. “We have never been back (to the community board),” says Graham proudly, although the group gets some sponsorship now from the Community Organisation Grants Scheme (COGS) which contributes around $2000 every

few years to keep things ticking over. It is also supported locally by St Peter’s Church, Raglan Sign Company, the Raglan Chronicle, Rock-it Kitchen and Meridian Energy. Edith Symes *Light exercise classes are held in St Peter’s Anglican Church hall on Mondays and Thursdays, 1011am, $3/session. New members welcome.

A very special journey to Middle Earth with the Raglan Theatre Academy M

iddle Earth came to life with The Raglan Theatre Academy’s rendition of The Hobbit and right from the getgo you know you’re in for a very special journey. Adapted by director and producer Ruth Hare, J.R.R Tolkien’s enchanting tale follows Gandalf the Sorcerer (Connor Marquand) as he leads Bilbo Baggins (Iemaja Hassell) and his Dwarf companions off on a frightening but magical journey to hunt for the powerful hidden treasure that must be returned to its rightful owners. Despite his initial objections, Bilbo follows the Dwarves and led by their king-in-exile Thorin Oakenshield (Taliah EdgecombePearse) on a quest to reclaim the Lonely Mountain and its treasures from the dragon Smaug (Vida Bradbury). Iemaja is an absolute star bringing the cleverness, emerging courage and compassion of hobbit Bilbo to life, as the wizard Gandalf’s and Dwarves ‘burglar’ for hire because ‘dragons can’t smell Hobbits’. Playing a very sage and serious Gandalf, Connor delivers words of wisdom and a calming influence throughout the production. Ruth makes full use of the cast, from the newest to the more mature actors, and each one plays their role with charm and confidence. We are introduced to some of the youngest actors as the Hobbit villagers (Brooklyn Bayliss Sylive Duggan-Haughey, Te Arahia Hira, Pippa Allen, Lennox Lindfield, Pounamu Tepania, Marvin Daniel,

Byron Freidrich, Lucy Ladyman, Eva Clarke and Mackenzie Lally) as they gather at the marketplace and perform a delightful folk dance, ending with a stunning pyrotechnic display. The Dwarves (Luna Petzold de la Cruz, Jayde Jansen Van Vuuren, Cassidy Hanna, Maria Grill, Stella O’Donnell, Bella Alexander and Katie Buckton) are a rapscallion bunch, who endear themselves to the audience, led by the very fearless Thorin hellbent on reclaiming the throne and the lost treasure. Their journey to the Lonely Mountain is full of peril and along the way they must overcome some formidable characters, including goblins, spiders and trolls. The goblins (Ivy Brunskill, Sol O’Loughlin, Emma Roughton, Satori van Staden, Isla Stephens, Cormag Eadie, Eli O’Connorand Grace McGregor) are brilliant as they attempt to make a supersonic mess in a battle to Queens’ ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’. Catching Bilbo in their web, the spiders (Conor Allen, Remy Grant, Diego Henderson, Alaia Hewett, Kaya Le Gouais Borgoo, Rya Ruka, Ruby Olsen, Isla Kirk-Orman, Selva Petzold de la Cruz, Amarda-Aroha Rolton, Torrie Stephens, Sofia Tovio-Smith and Caleb van Staden) do a stellar job of making your skin crawl. Some of the best accents are found with the Trolls (Taylor Hanna, Ethan Kirk-Orman and Indie Ruka) whose obnoxiousness matches their outlandish costumes.

From Lady Galadriel (Summer Maybee-Waitere), Lady Elrond (Isabeau Conjearts) and Queen Thranduil (Leila-Rose Skeates) to Tauriel (Sashka Highway) and Legolas (Maia Holland), the Elves are regal and poised. The Orcs and Wargs (Jivan Rao, Ayla Lindfield, Danielle Marquand, Matta Daniel, Enfys Hewett, Zaira O’Donnell, Nikau Pinfold, Isobel Peart, Mickey Brajkovic and Isla Beeby) do a great job of giving wolves and punk rockers a very bad name, as they spread dread and tension throughout the show. It is Annie Fisher who steals the show with a schizoid creepiness; she combines humour and horror as a disturbingly convincing Gollum. Vida’s delivers a powerfully fearsome Smaug in the most remarkable costume of the night, featuring a lengthy scaly tail and glow-in the-dark eyes. Ruth’s choreography brings the whole production to life, as each delightful folk dance and fearsome battle scene is played out on stage; the final slow motion battle scene is outstanding. The stage hands provide a defttouch as they shift the scenery between scenes, Pete van Weerden set construction is standout, makeup and hair by Angela Fisher and Amy Hanna is stunning and Maddie Alexander costume designs are sensational, as always. Beachin' weather!

Summer has finally arrived and Whāingaroa is looking stunning! While you’re lounging by, playing in or having fun on the water this summer, keep an eye out for the wee Māui dolphins. With your help, together we CAN save the world’s rarest dolphins: Fishing? Don’t use set nets where dolphins may be found; Stay with your net – if you see dolphins, lift your net immediately Boatie? Use a ‘no wake’ speed within 300m of dolphins; Don’t swim with Māui dolphins or attempt to feed them Cat lover? Don’t dispose of cat litter or other animal feaces in toilets, drains or storm water systems – this may contribute to the spread of parasitic disease to the dolphins Recycle & don’t litter – yet another reason to keep our beaches and public spaces clean of litter: Māui may swallow or get entangled in rubbish! Spread the word! - the more people that know about Māui dolphins and their plight - the more people will care! Report all sightings to

BIG CHANGES for our community collections... We have some big changes for our recycling services Whaingaroa. It’s time the entire country leveled up. Aotearoa is standardizing recycling services right across the motu! Wow that’s big! This means we are joining the rest of our nation and from 15th December WE WILL ONLY COLLECT plastic containers marked with a recycling triangle and graded #1 #2 and #5. Plus clear film soft plastics (without printing and colours). We’ve tried our best, but the reality is, there is no market to recycle plastic containers #3 #4 #6 #7. If we buy anything with these numbers, they have to be disposed of into pre-paid bags. All the more motivation to choose good packaging (or no packaging) when we’re at the supermarket, right? Let’s do what we can to REDUCE what packaging we buy, and choose to REUSE or REFILL things instead, because reality is, RECYCLING isn’t possible for everything. This change in plastics collections is for recycling crates, rural seafreight containers, XZW public recycling bay on site, and all local businesses. There are no changes to our collections of Glass, Metals, Paper & Card, we will continue to collect these as per normal, washed and squashed. Thanks Raglan whanau for all that you do to join us in working towards Zero Waste!

+ CLEAR soft plastics (which gets turned into these bags)

LOOK OUT for our community's NEW pre-paid bags. Technically they're not new because they're made from our community's plastic recycling! We have been working with Convex Innovation in Hamilton and Astron Sustainability in Auckland to turn our collections of clear soft plastics + #2 milk bottles into our kerbside collection landfill bags. These green bags pictured will replace the 30L yellow bags, and soon we will replace the 60L blue bags too. We encourage everyone to join us and do what we can to Rethink, Refuse, Reduce, and Reuse what we buy, so we can put less of these bags in landfill all together. Imagine going from 2 big blue bags down to 1, or down to the green smaller size, or putting a bag out once a fortnight instead of once a week. Is your whanau up for it?

The Ministry of Education has identified that Raglan Area School is likely to be overcrowded and has given the Board of Trustees notice of this. The Secretary for Education has developed a proposed enrolment scheme for Raglan Area School under section 11IA of the Education Act 1989. As part of this process we are consulting with people living in the area for which the school is a reasonably convenient school. We have already sent out information letters to the Principals and Board of Trustees of all schools and early childhood centres who are likely to be affected by this proposal The enrolment scheme could affect which school a student will be entitled to enrol in, or school transport entitlements as appropriate. We will be holding a consultation meeting Monday 7 December 2020 at 6.30pm in the school staff room at Raglan Area School to provide further information and gather feedback from the community. If you have any comments about the proposed enrolment scheme for Raglan Area School that you would like to be included in the final report about this proposal, please forward them to botsecretary@ raglanarea.school.nz by Monday 25 January 2021. A copy of the proposed scheme can be found on the school website: raglanarea.school.nz
