Circus gets the okay to use school grounds T he circus is coming to town this summer after all.

Following a nervous few days’ wait, Circus Aotearoa’s Damian Gordon got confirmation first thing Tuesday morning that they can set up their Big Top and perform at the Raglan Area School grounds in the second week of January.

Earlier, the Waitetuna-based troupe had been denied the use of the Raglan rugby grounds – their usual local venue – because of damage to the fields by other touring circuses. The Raglan performances will kick off a northern tour by Circus Aotearoa, which was established back in 2008 by Damian and his wife Irene.

RAS Year 11 Social Action - Mental Health Awareness Week What the class did was split into two groups where they chose a dimension of Te Whare Tapa Wha to focus on. One of the groups decided on Taha Hinengaro. To appropriately address this dimension, the group chose to teach mindfulness to the younger students of the school, this being the Year 2s and 3s. The students were organised into small groups and participated in a range of mindfulness activities, working with the Year 11s. The second group chose to promote healthy eating, with Taha Tinana. They decided to name this social action ‘Project Energise’, promoting it with small flyers that were handed out at school, as well as putting up healthy eating posters. The group also handed out free fruit and milk at lunchtimes during school, as well as delivering it to junior classrooms. The class would like to give a special thank you to Satnam and Four Square for providing the fruit, as well as the following businesses, Raglan Surf Co, The Herbal Dispensary, Isobar and Pinnacle Health. Finally, we would like to thank Dreamview Creamery for delivering four crates of free milk at short notice on the day of our social action. Jahli Waititi

or the past month, the Year 11 Social Studies class has been targeting a large social issue, in hopes of making a change. Our social action was supporting Mental Health Week, and addressing the discrimination towards people dealing with mental health.

• •

Before this took place, the class spent the month planning for their social action, until it was executed over the span of a week, from the 23rd to the 29th of September. This was done in and during school. Our theme for Mental Health Awareness Week focused on the four dimensions of Te Whare Tapa Wha, being Taha Tinana (physical well being), Taha Hinengaro (mental/emotional well being), Taha wairua (spiritual well being) and Taha whanau (family/social well being). A human needs a balance of these four dimensions in order to have good health.

Peter has experienced first-hand the Hamilton and sometimes up to an hour and ccidents and emergencies in service in action after a person with diabetes a half away. rural areas can mean help is collapsed where he was volunteering; This is where PRIME kicks in, Raglan often hours away.

Thanks to funding by the Raglan Community Charitable Trust, Raglan’s PRIME (Primary Response in Medical Emergencies) has had a boost to the service that provides specialised, on-call backup to the local emergency services. Two doctors and two nurses new to the service have undertaken specialist training on rural emergency response training and the Raglan PRIME service now has a dedicated vehicle, equipped and ready to attend medical emergencies. Raglan Community Charitable Trust chair Peter Storey says the trust is committed to providing funding that benefits the health and well-being of the people of Raglan. “Supporting PRIME was an opportunity for us to fund a community project that will benefit a lot of people in our area.”

PRIME was called into action and Raglan Medical Centre’s Dr Mike Loten was sent to the incident. Servicing Whaingaroa, PRIME now has four registered nurses and four doctors, who work at the Raglan Medical Centre, and another local intensive care nurse who works at Waikato Hospital. Mike says the funding has come at a time when the service was experiencing a bit of a lull, and the additional staff and vehicle means they are able to provide a more extensive service. “The funding has made an enormous difference to the morale of the PRIME team who feel very supported and invigorated.” As with most rural communities, Raglan St John only has one full time paid staffer and volunteer crew as back-up. This can mean the only ambulance on-call is in

Medical Centre and other PRIME-trained staff operate an on-call roster to support the ambulance with a speedy response to seriously ill or injured patients. Staff carry a pager, PRIME response kit and other relevant safety equipment and will respond to emergency calls sent by St John. When minutes matter in a medical emergency, Peter says PRIME will make a huge difference, not only in life and death situations but also in the recovery of the patient. Janine Jackson Local medical professionals with emergency skills can join PRIME – training will continue to be fully funded by the Raglan Community Charitable Trust. Acknowledgement It is with great sadness that the Raglan Chronicle acknowledges the car accident that occurred shortly before 2am Sunday on SH23 near Te Mata involving three young local men. The 21-year-old driver was fatally injured and two passengers are at Waikato Hopsital in critical conditions. Our deepest condolences go out to family and friends of those involved and the wider community during these difficult times.

Two thriving ethical food start-ups spread wings

Raglan Community Board Update 2019 A monthly column that covers key issues and happenings from the monthly Raglan Community Board meetings.

Tracey -- with a pack of 'Grandad's Beef' in hand -- showing off the local produce at her farm shop.

T

wo fledgling ethical food ventures in the Te Uku district have taken flight – one setting up a village farm shop over the divvy, the other moving to greener pastures of its own. The farming family behind the ‘Grandad’s Beef’ brand of free-range meat opened their innovative Gate to Plate Farm Shop at Whatawhata village about six weeks ago now, while the couple who set up Soul Food Farm on leased land at Okete have bought and transferred to a high-profile property bordering SH23. “People are just lapping it up,” Tracey Bayliss told the Chronicle of the produce in her tiny farm shop amid a series of newish outlets at the Whatawhata crossroads, a site which not only attracts customers from either side of the Raglan deviation but also gets a constant flow of north-south through traffic. The raison d’etre of Tracey’s shop may be the meat from her father’s Ohautira Rd farm – a range launched online three years ago – but she also stocks all manner of other ethically produced goodies from the Waikato, including those from Raglan entrepreneurs who’ve embraced the idea of a farmers’ market. There’s the likes of Dreamview Farm’s milk and eggs, Salsa Brava chimichurri, PB23 peanut and almond butter, Raglan chocolate, Raglan Roast and the new Morning Glory coffee, and honey from both Raglan Apiaries and Hunt & Gather. Tracey – who’s still based in Te Uku where she grew up – is delighted at the “really good” response and custom since opening the rustic two-by-four metre cabin from Wednesdays to Sundays each week. She’s surprised too at the support from Hamilton. “Customers appreciate being able to buy fresh food in just one place (outside of a supermarket),” she says. They like to know where the produce comes from and how it’s made or grown. It’s a win-win situation, Tracey adds. She sells on behalf of her suppliers, who get to pocket a healthy return without it impacting on the consumer. That’s because “there’s no-one in the middle putting on massive margins”. The shop charges a 15 per cent flat rate for overheads, which she says is half the average most stores place on products. Tracey’s delighted with the “cool” little community of producers who’ve come on board, all supporting each other a bit like a co-op. “That’s what’s important to me,” she insists. “I’m not out to get rich.” Meantime, for a couple whose market garden only got going last year, it’s full-steam ahead as they transition Soul Food Farm from land leased off a farmer in Okete Rd to their own “perfect” flat property alongside the Raglan-Hamilton highway.

The only hitch for Kylie and Eddie Robinson is that getting commercial drillers on site to bore for and finally find water ended up costing nearly $30,000. They “felt a bit funny about it” but have ended up crowdfunding for a little help along the way from their supporters and local businesses, including ‘Freedom2Fly’ in Raglan which will stage a festive family fundraiser before Christmas. They say they’d like to supply the Gate to Plate Farm Shop with their own “earth to table” vegetables and herbs, but are already at capacity fulfilling orders within the local community and beyond. “We will wait now till we’ve expanded,” Kylie told the Chronicle. The enterprising couple, who have two young children, admit they took a gamble with their venture but were soon supplying first Raglan’s Herbal Dispensary, then The Shack and Wallis Bistro about this time last year. They now also supply The Wharf Kitchen and Bar, Orca Eatery & Bar and ULO’s Kitchen. Both Speight’s Ale House and The Kirk Cafe in Hamilton also take their produce. “And we’ve started doing veggie boxes for some clients,” says Kylie, who’s convinced many Raglan locals do want to buy fresh organic produce and are mindful of where it comes from Edith Symes Go to https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/weneed-your-help-to-move-soul-food-farm for Kylie and Eddie’s crowdfunding page.

The purpose of a community board is to: • represent and act as an advocate for the interests of the community; • consider and report on any matter referred to it by their council, and any issues of interest to the community board; • make an annual submission to their council on expenditure; • maintain an overview of services provided by their council within the community; and • communicate with community organisations and special interest groups in the community, and undertake any other responsibilities delegated by their council. • carry out functions and exercise those powers delegated to them by their council. A first task for the new RCB is to do some internal team building and planning, this will be taking place in December. This is an exciting opportunity for the Board to do strategic thinking and of course get to know each other better. Some keys things we will be looking at are: • RCB Engagement Plan • RCB member roles/appointments/ portfolios

• Create an RCB Dashboard of what’s happening in our community • Raglan Naturally implementation • Raglan Wastewater discharge consent renewal • Raglan/Council Blueprinting Long Term Plan We will be reporting back to the community after our internal team building/planning workshop. The RCB will be regularly updating the community via our Raglan Community Board Facebook page, The Raglan Chronicle, on Raglan Radio and at community events. Out now for consultation ‘Draft Growth & Economic Development Strategy – Waikato 2020’ this is about Waikato District Council’s commitment to growth and economic prosperity in the District. Submissions are open until 17th January 2020. The next RCB Discretionary Funding round opens on Friday 6th of December and closes on Friday 7th February 2020, for more information contact our local council office here in Raglan. The Board will meet regularly throughout the year; officially there will be Community Board meetings every six weeks, on Wednesdays, 1:30pm. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, 19 February 2020, with the remainder of meetings in 2020 to be held on the following dates: • 1 April 2020 • 13 May 2020 • 24 June 2020 • 5 August 2020 • 16 September 2020 • 28 October 2020 • 9 December 2020 The RCB will host community workshops and discussion opportunities in the months that meetings are not scheduled. Everyone is welcome! See you at our next board meeting.

Raglan Theatre Academy’s Narnia an end-of-year hit

T

he story of four children who tumble out of a wardrobe into a fantastical world is stunningly retold in the Raglan Theatre Academy’s rendition of Narnia. Sent to the country to escape the Nazi bombings of London during WWII, siblings Lucy (Luna Petzold de la Cruz), Edmund (Josh Alexander), Susan (Summer Maybee-Waitere) and Peter (Connor Marquand) unwittingly enter the wardrobe in the home of an aging professor. The set (constructed by Pete Van Weerden) make this all possible with huge wardrobe doors appearing and first Lucy, and eventually the other three, stumble into the snowy world of Narnia. Lucy meets Tumnus the faun (Iemaja Hassell), at the lamp-post and follows him home for tea. Despite knowing that the White Witch will find out about the ‘daughter of Eve’ and is likely to punish him severely, Tumnus disobeys her orders, realising he can't bring himself to give Lucy up to the witch. Luna is delightful as the spirited Lucy and Iemaja’s portrayal of Tumnus as the confused and frightened faun steals the show. Josh has a knack for tapping into Edmund’s spoiled nature, and Summer and Connor are suitably serious as the responsible older siblings. When the four are finally all together in Narnia there are more fantastical creatures to meet – including Mr. Beaver (Griffin Pohutukawka), and his wife Mrs. Beaver (Cassidy Hanna) who are fabulously friendly and helpful, the fox (Annie Fisher) who injects a bit of humour and many more enchanted Narnian creatures. The siblings learn of the dangerous White Witch, who fears the children are the ‘chosen ones’ sent to defeat her.

Betrayed by the brattish Edmund chasing the promise of sweets, the witch sends her servants to hunt the remaining three children down. Lucy, Susan and Peter turn to the great lion Aslan - played majestically by Leila-Rose Skeates - and their new Narnian friends, which include talking animals, dryads and fauns, among other fantasy creatures to stop the witch. Chased by the White Witch's secret police captain Maugrim (Isabeau Conjearts who also plays the professor’s housekeeper) and his cronies, in a truly frightening performance that sent shivers through the audience. Peter defeats Maugrim who is brought back to face the White Witch and all hell is unleashed as the witch seeks to destroy the children and Aslan. The ensuing battle scenes and execution of Alsan adds a real element of heightened anticipation and fear. The creatures in the battle sequences are genuinely creepy. Designed by Maddie Alexander, the costuming is stunning - from the accurate 1940s clothing of the children, Tumnus’s dapper outfit with faun legs and headpiece, to the regal and cruel White Witch (Sashka Highway) and the charming outfit worn by humorous Mr Fox (Annie Fisher). The choreography (by director Ruth Hare) is enchanting; the entrance of the White Witch in a carriage drawn by ‘reindeer’ is spellbinding with the addition of Jaime Witters singing You put a Spell on Me which showcases her impressive vocal range. Father Christmas being ushered in by his elves to Bjork’s It's Oh So Quiet is a crowd favourite. All-in-all the entire cast put on a spectacular performance, bringing drama, humour, musicality and dance to Raglan with this retelling of the much-loved The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Raglan Area School introduced to Te Atai o Rongo

Farewell to Whaea Celia

Whaea Celia and Boss teaching in D1

W

haea Celia, our cherished taonga and junior school jewel, is retiring from the teaching profession at the end of 2019 after teaching at Raglan Area School for 25 years. Though we wish her well in the next phase of her journey, she will be sorely missed by students, staff, and whānau alike. Thank you, Whaea Celia, for your incredible energy, mana, and passion for learning. Read about Whaea Celia through the eyes of our Year 2/3 students. Whaea Celia loves helping children. She is very kind, teaching children the alphabet, writing, and swimming. I like Whaea Celia. She made a good decision becoming a teacher for Raglan Area School. Whaea Celia has taught hundreds of children in Raglan. I hope you have a great retirement. - Patrick Scott Whaea Celia taught me very well. She taught me Maths. Whaea Celia taught me how to add on numbers like 8+5. I used to use counters to help me add in her class, but now I can add in

my head. Thank you, Whaea Celia, for teaching me. - Beatrix Dodd-Parr Whaea Celia taught my brothers and me. She knows hundreds of people in Raglan. Whaea Celia is liked by lots of children. Whaea Celia has a long, grey hair with blue eyes. She has a plait in her hair most of the time, or a bun. Thank you for teaching me and my brothers. Have a great holiday. I will miss you. Have a great rest of the time at school. You are very special to me. - Inés Wrigley-Gignoux Whaea Celia smells like a beautiful rose petal. She is the prettiest of all the other women. She makes me feel happy. Whaea Celia said, “The more you learn, the more you want to write,” and that really helped me to be happy and a writer. Whaea Celia taught me how to do Maths and play Maths games. I remember playing Snakes and Ladders to help me learn to count. We played Bingo, too. I wish you could stay here at our school forever. Thank you Whaea Celia. Nyah-Rose Rangiawha Dear Whaea Celia, You have been a nice teacher. Thank you for being a tremendous learner so we can learn

Year 2/3 students sit beneath the pou of Te Atai o Rongo as carver Kawharu Greensill explains the story.

O

n Friday, November 22, Year 2 and 3 students, teachers and whānau visited Paihakena Marae for a special reason. We had the opportunity to be welcomed onto the marae and to visit the pou which represents the kaitiaki Te Atai o Rongo. Luckily, one of the carvers, Kawharu Greensill, spoke to us about the pou and the story it tells us. We walked to the marae. We waited at the gates for Whaea Hinemoa to welcome us on with a karanga. We had to walk slowly to the seats and sit down. There were long speeches and short speeches. We sang Whakamau after that and we remembered most of the words! Next, we walked a bit further to the pou. Matua Kawharu told us a story about the pou and Te Atai o rongo. Te Atai o Rongo is a kaitiaki in our Moana. He is a taniwha. When we are in trouble in the water, call for Te Atai o Rongo and help will come. We were lucky to go to the marae and the pou because we got to see and learn all sorts of things. We want to thank Poihakena Marae for their amazing Manaakitanga, and Matua Kawharu for taking the time to pass on the story of Te Atai o Rongo to us. Thank you also to our helpers from school, Matua Quenten, Whaea Hinemoa and Whaea E Rangi, whose expertise made the day great for all. By Lakey Vink, Aria Miller, Lucia Quilter, Hawaikii Gibson and Indie Heasman - E3 Class - Year 2

Students and whānau are welcomed onto Poihakena marae as manuwhiri before visiting the pou.

2019 Western Rural Cluster Speech Contest

O

n Thursday morning, the 26th September, the 2019 Western Rural Cluster Speech Contest started. Schools from Te Kowhai, Whatawhata, Waitetuna, and Raglan Area came to little Te Uku School for this big contest. Te Uku’s speakers were: Ivy Brunskill, Ezra Ruka, Michael Copland, Giorgia Hope and Indie Ruka. Lisa Thompson, Janet Norris, Jacqui Smith and Sarah Johnson were the judges this year. Giorgia recalls - Thursday morning was the speech contest. I felt like I was going to forget my words and I would talk too fast or even pass out. Which would probably never happen because I've never passed out before, and I don’t think I ever will. But overall I was extremely nervous. Finally, it was my turn. The judges, teachers and parents eyes stared right at me. The timer started….. I began my speech “Have you ever wondered what the future would be like?.....” Once my speech was done I felt that I could have done better because I forgot some words and in some paragraphs I talked too fast. But I really enjoyed

sharing my speech and persuading people to stop climate change! Indie recalls - Butterflies fluttered all through my stomach, my head was pounding with fear. I mumbled my speech over and over again, about the deadly climate change. Finally the spotlight came. Beady eyes stared hard, focusing on every detail; my gestures, my expression, my speech. I started my speech nice and slow but soon enough my nerves were reacting and unstoppable. I couldn’t resist the urge to speed up. The time was only 3 minutes and 15 seconds - the exact time the speeches should be. Judges wrote the scores and carried on with the contest. Afterwards brilliant writers like: Giorgia Hope, Coco Wilson and Maia Ryks took the stage with their awesome speeches! Congratulations to the winners of the contest: Lucy Jamieson from Te Kowhai who won the Year 5/6 event, Amelia Tinetti from Whatawhata who won the Year 7/8 event and Evangelia Kanellis from Te Mata who won the Open event. Our own Ivy Brunskill came second in the Open Event and Michael Copland came third in the Year 7/8 event. We are all so proud of you Ivy and Michael. Written by Indie Ruka and Giorgia Hope

Year 8’s Farewell

Chile Comes to Te Uku

T

his term, Te Uku School has had the privilege of hosting four teachers from Chile. The teachers have been part of a programme called ‘English Opens Doors’, run by The University of Waikato and the Chilean Government to support their teachers of English. The teachers, Paula, Diego, Camila and Daniela spent time in the Junior and Senior areas of the school. They were engaged in learning about how the New Zealand Education system works, as well as sharing information about the system they have.

The teachers also prepared and taught lessons for the children - this included learning Spanish and sharing some of their traditional myths and legends. Some comments from the Junior children about having these teachers at our school were, “I liked having someone here who had the same name as me” (Diego), “I liked learning the names for animals and how to introduce ourselves in Spanish” (Olive), “It was a change to have teachers that are visiting from another country” (Dane).

Tabloids Day 2019

T

hank you for the amazing experience at Te Uku school. Most of the Year 8’s were lucky enough to attend Te Uku school for all of their primary and intermediate years. On behalf of the Year 8 students of 2019 from Te Uku School, we would like to thank the school and teachers for all the amazing opportunities that we have had over the years - it has definitely expanded our hearts and minds. Some Year 8 students have been at Te Uku School for the full eight years. We have been lucky enough to call this school ours and we have all really enjoyed our time here. We would like to give a special thanks to all the teachers (past and present) that have supported us throughout our years, with our learning, creativity, curiosity and guiding us towards our future.

In our last year at Te Uku school we have had a great number of opportunities to learn outside the classroom. Te Uku have a year 7 & 8 Outdoor Challenge Programme, this year it involved activities that included a ski/board camp at Mount Ruapehu, white water rafting at Vector Wero, coastal planting to preserve Raglan coastlines, permaculture gardening, being part of Treemendous, caving at Te Pahu with Raglan Rock, amazing local DOC bush walks, setting up camp outdoors and sleeping in bivouacs, and soon, we will be finishing our outdoor challenges with a traditional old-school camp at Camp Raglan. All of us have loved these amazing experiences that have been provided for us and we certainly have many memories to take with us. Thank you Te Uku. Article written by: Grady and Ezra on behalf of Logan, Crosbie, Joseph and Iyla also.

A

few weeks ago, we had Tabloids Day at our school. Waitetuna, Te Mata, Raglan Area and lots of other schools came to Te Uku School to play. It was fun seeing our friends from other schools. We played lots of games before and after lunch. These were some of our favourite games: Sienna: In the Obstacle Course there was jumping and hula hooping. Brayden: In Cat and Mouse, people were chasing each other under the parachute. Once, people counted down and the cat didn’t catch the mouse. The cat lost and the mouse won. Caleb: I liked Rob the Nest. Every time you go to get the eggs you almost get whacked by someone with a pool noodle, then you have

to drop everything and go back. You can get balls and rubber chickens from another person so you won’t get whacked. Jack: I liked Beanbag Bucket Throw. You throw toy animals and chickens into buckets. If you get them in the buckets you get points like 100, 50 and 10. Malakai: In Vortex Throw you get to throw a vortex through the hoops. You get a point by getting it through the hoop, and the first one to get five points wins. Everyone got to play every game for a long time. The big kids worked really hard to create the games, teach us what to do and make all the games fun for us. Some of the other big kids were our team leaders, and they showed us where to go. By Sienna, Brayden, Caleb, Jack and Malakai (Year 1)
