Everybody deserves to smile this Christmas This Christmas, Ray White Raglan will continue its popular tradition of giving with ‘A Little Ray of Giving’. The Ray White team are calling on the local community to embrace the giving season and dig deep for kiwi families who need it most. All you need to do is purchase a gift for a child, then pop the gift under the tree in our Ray White office. Tell our team if the gift is for a boy or girl and their age and your gift will be delivered by Surfside Church to a local family who will appreciate the support this festive season.
and more... Christmas Cake Competition Bring your Christmas cake to Ray White Raglan office for judging by very special judges on Wednesday 19 December by 4:00pm and be in to win one of 3 prizes. Cakes will be donated to the Surfside Church Food Bank – ‘Tis the season to be jolly!

keen group of eight students strongly represented Raglan Area School throughout five games of Touch Rugby (boys’ division) at the inaugural Blue Light U15 Games held at four locations around Tauranga over November 28 - 30. The U15 Games targets students in Year 9 and 10 and provides fun, fast and friendly competition across four codes: Touch Rugby, Fast Five Netball, Futsal and Golf. As New Zealand Blue Light is the only youth charity that works in partnership with the New Zealand Police, a highlight is the inclusion of uniformed officers in the tournament, with the opening ceremony featuring a popular Police Dog demonstration. Blue Light Programmes Manager Hannah Ward explains that “The U15 Games are about fun, fair play and whanau; fun through sport, fair play
through our attitude, and whanau through encouraging youth to value team mates, coaches and mentors. To honour these values a Supreme Award is presented to the team in each code that best displays the U15 Games’ values.” Joseph Rao, Senior Teacher of Year 9-10 at Raglan Area School says they are very impressed with the tournament and have already booked it in for next year. “The tournament was fantastic – a great opportunity for our students to participate and compete against other schools, especially at Touch. Our school is heavily involved in basketball, so it was a great opportunity to try out a new sport in such a supportive environment. It was superbly organised – Hannah did a great job, from putting on a great free breakfast right down to the referees being very encouraging and supportive of the players."

Principal of Hamilton’s Peachgrove Intermediate School for the past 15 years, Louisa currently manages 480 students and 50 staff members. She’s looking forward to moving to Raglan permanently. Husband Ricky has owned the local butchery for more than two years now and he has a long affiliation with Whaingaroa, having grown up in Ngaruawahia. She also has a personal connection to the area through her paternal grandparents who farmed here in the 1930s and her father attended school in Raglan as a young boy. “I’m really excited to finally have the chance to live in the community.” Louisa plans to initially work on building strong relationships with the staff, students and the wider community. “My first job will be to get in and actually listen and observe; to learn about the school’s unique character and culture.” Although change will come with time, Louisa believes Raglan Area School already

Situated in Raglan, New Zealand, beside Aotearoa’s beautiful Whaingaroa Harbour, the non-profit programme provides interdisciplinary tattooists with a safe space and positive environment to retreat, tattoo and make. The D ece programme allows tattooists the m space away from their usual time and b working environment to reflect on their practice, and explore new territory with the support of a new community in the beautiful coastal town of Raglan. One residency of one-month duration in summer will be offered each year for outstanding tattooists. They will live in Raglan at Te Kopua Camp, which sits alongside the surf beach Ngaranui. They will be offered a guest spot at Raglan Tattoo to develop their practice, and an exhibition opportunity at the Raglan Arts Centre. The first resident will be Carson Foley (@carsonflowie), an artist and tattooer based in New York. Foley will arrive in November 2018, and the art exhibition will be held at Raglan Old School Arts Centre December 15 - 23 2018. Opening night from 6pm. er

has a strong foundation and says there are many positives to work with. “I’m wanting to add value to the good practices already happening in the school and to contribute in a meaningful way.” She says the school already has what many schools in Aotearoa are now trying to implement in working together to create improved learning pathways for students of all ages. “Raglan is naturally centred and learning within the goals, beliefs and aspirations of the local community. I am excited about Raglan Area School’s courage, conviction and clear commitment to students living and learning within a bicultural, sustainable and ecological environment.” Louisa is also the lead principal of the He Piko He Taniwha Kaahui Ako (Hamilton Central Community of Learning), which includes Hamilton Boys High School, Hamilton Girls High School and Hamilton East Primary School. These schools have been working together for the past three years to learn from each other with the aim of improving learning outcomes for students at risk of underachievement. Raglan Area School board of trustees’ chair Chris Banks says the school is very fortunate to have Louisa on board. “Louisa brings extensive educational experience, a strong interest in student well-being and future-thinking to the role, ensuring that Raglan Area School will continue to build on striving towards educational excellence and ensuring students are well-prepared for their futures beyond school.” Louisa won the board over for being a passionate educator, leader, strategic thinker and innovator after a thorough recruitment process representing all community groups, he says. “We believe she will bring strong leadership skills, curricular focus, be instrumental in developing more learning opportunities for students and build on our strengths and values.” Louisa is looking forward to meeting staff and students later this year before she officially takes up her new role in January 2019. Geoff was aghast at the fake officers demanding money.
F
reedom camper Geoff Wigley got a rude awakening in the wee hours last week when two women and a man wielding torches and wearing high-viz vests rapped loudly on his van windows demanding $250 up front for allegedly camping illegally on what they said was Māori land. But Geoff was in the carpark of Raglan Rugby Club sports ground where Park Dr meets Cross St – a popular spot for self-contained vehicles and one that is not listed as prohibited or restricted by Waikato District Council’s new freedom camping bylaw. A young Kiwi surfer halfway through a twomonth road trip around the country, Geoff reckons he was well informed and knew his rights. All the same “I was pretty rattled”, the 26 -year-old structural engineer from Dunedin told the Chronicle. Not only did the trio of fake freedom camping officers shine torches into his bleary eyes at 2am on the Tuesday, but they also had their vehicle’s headlights directed at him on high beam, Geoff says. The impostors then requested Geoff step out of his campervan and show them his driver’s licence. “It was amazing,” he says of their audacity. He refused their requests and instead questioned their claims that he was camping on Māori land, at which point they became angry and threatened to increase the fine, Geoff says. Geoff knew that under the bylaw the fine for illegal freedom camping is a straight $200 – not the $250 demanded – and doubted any council would hire three employees to enforce it at that hour of night. “They didn’t know the answers to any of my questions … and when I asked about the other 10 campervans (in the carpark) they said everyone was getting a fine.
“But after our argument they quickly drove off.” Geoff says the experience left him more angry than anything else. “Imagine if it was a couple’s first night in New Zealand – it’s really intimidating to be confronted like that.” He reported the incident the next day to local police and council staff, and talked to the real freedom camping enforcement officer. “Everyone I told was so friendly and caring that I felt the community would want to stop these people.” As it turns out, Geoff’s experience was not an isolated one. WDC monitoring team leader Craig Birkett said in a press release last week: “We’ve been told of six incidents where people have been asked to pay for a camping ‘pass’. They are then given a sheet of paper as their ‘permit’. Unfortunately in many of these cases the campers have handed over money, thinking they are doing the right thing.” Mr Birkett says there is no such thing as a pass or permit to freedom camp in Raglan. “Council will not ask you for money; however if you are camping in a prohibited area you will be given an infringement notice.” He confirms that WDC enforcement officers have identification, and will show it if asked by anyone who is unsure. Geoff stayed on and enjoyed a few hassle-free nights in Raglan after his early morning wake-up call. He’s big on his rights as a freedom camper but recognises the tension this trend can cause. He reckons as long as people respect the Freedom Camping Act 2011 by leaving no trace of their presence – and preferably spending locally like he does – then it’s a great way to have a sustainable, affordable adventure. “It’s one of the best ways to see New Zealand and more people should do it.” Edith Symes

Don’t Feed Your Pet Junk Food!
Range: Vet-Only pet food offers a wide range of special diets, such as oral care, weight loss and hairball control. Tailor-made: Large-breed dogs have different nutritional needs than smaller dogs and therefore need different diet formulations. Breed specific foods are formulated to help control or prevent some of the typical health problems of each breed. Your vet also has access to prescription diets designed for specific health conditions. Much less mess to clean up: Quality food is highly digestible – therefore less mess and smell when your pet goes to the toilet. Weight management: Obesity is the most common form of malnutrition in the pets of today. Feeding pets an appropriate quantity of food is very important. High quality food tends to make the animal feel full and satisfied with a smaller quantity. Dental health: Dental problems are the second most common health problem that we see in our patients.
