A graduatre of the Manaaki Ao pilot programme run through Raglan Area School, local youth Dayton is now employed as part of the Karioi Project team.
K
arioi Maunga ki te Moana’s pilot programme at Raglan Area School is creating employment pathways and inspiring young conservationists. Dayton Keremeta started the NCEA Manaaki Ao pilot programme as a Year 12 student graduating the course as a Year 13 last year, and this year he joined the Karioi Project team as a paid employee. Being able to combine being outdoors with academic studies was the inspiration behind joining the pilot for Dayton and he says the enormity of the predator problem was a real eye-opener. “Being able to work outdoors and getting rid of the pests is a good feeling.”
With a Level 3 NCEA pass on all his subjects, he’s got his eyes set on university studies, but in the meantime Dayton’s loving going bush and playing his part in eradicating stoats, rats and feral cats around Whaingaroa. Last year, all of the 12 students in the programme passed, which is designed to help students to grow in confidence, leadership and develop work-ready skills. Manaaki Ao delivers practical, handson activities in challenging physical environments and with students working towards both NCEA Unit and Achievement Standards at Level 2 and 3. Karioi Project tutors Annie Lorenzen, Duncan Mackay and Kristel van Houte, working alongside Raglan Area School teacher Angela Prain, introduce the students to a variety of local environmental issues and human impacts, and teams of
students develop sustainable actions in response to these issues. “Our vision is that through the project young people will have an enhanced curiosity in the natural world and will develop a love for nature – and that this will motivate them to take action in caring for the environment and inspire and equip them to engage in environmental science study and work in their future lives or careers,” Kristel says. Well on the way to making a local environmental impact, the student’s solutions to pest control have also translated to commercial initiatives with the Year 12 students setting up and managing a predator trapline at Xtreme Zero Waste. “They now pay us for pest control because they reckon we can do a better job than previous contractors,” Duncan says. Working collectively with partner organisations like Te Iwi Tahi Pest and Papa Taiao (the national partner organisation that provides NCEA accreditation) has been a strength of this project and in all aspects of Karioi’s conservation and education work, project manager Kristel says. “For us its more than just about predator control or conservation even. Its about growing the next generation of kaitiaki. And its about taking people and our community on a journey, exploring how how everything we do is interconnected and impacts on each other, and this applies to humanity as well as our environment, together we can explore, restore and reconnect. There’s this great saying – When you tug on a single thread in nature...you’ll find it attached to the rest of the world,” she says. Janine Jackson

aglan Rugby Club’s senior players got a big surprise when the new season’s training kicked off last week – the captain of Japan’s national side, Michael Leitch, turned up for a practice run with the local lads. But it was sayonara all too quickly as the Brave Blossoms skipper flew out of New Zealand the following day, though with a hint of a return now his professional career is nearing an end. “It sounds like he might be back here playing club rugby for Raglan,” local coach Noel Barber told the Chronicle, thinking a few years ahead. “He wants to come home to New Zealand to relax.” The 30-year-old forward who was born in Burwood, Christchurch – his father a Kiwi, his mother Fijian – had actually spent the past 10 to 12 weeks of his off-season in town before joining in at the training session at the rugby grounds in Cross St. He was definitely not looking forward to going back to the cold, Noel added. Michael’s done most of his pro career in Japan, having moved there at the age of 15 to study. He learnt the Japanese culture and language – which he says he now
speaks better than his native English – and is considered well integrated to Japan, gaining citizenship in 2013.

Michael has also played for the Chiefs, signing a contract with the Hamilton-based side for the 2015 Super Rugby season after earlier being denied a chance through injury.
Michael’s only the second New Zealandborn player to lead the Brave Blossoms – traditionally the strongest rugby union power in Asia – after Andrew McCormick in the 1990s.

This is Us exhibition opening
T
he opening of the This is Us art exhibition at the Old School GalleryWas a great success. Although the sun shone and the weather was hot over 60 people turn up view the new works produced by Raglan Art. The collection is extremely varied and there was lots of discussion and conversations in front of various pieces. The overall effect was of the talent that abounds in the Raglan
community. Many questions about the modern art needed answers and admiration of landscapes and many other subjects were much admired. Wine and nibbles helped to cool everyone down while meeting and greeting likeminded people made for an enjoyable occasion. The exhibition is open daily from 10am to 2pm and well worth viewing to see what this innovated group of artists are up too. R. Fawcett
Seattle rock legends Supersuckers play YOT Club
H
istory of Rock ‘n’ Roll is the aptly titled new single from inteGRITy U.S.A rock ‘n’ rollers The SUPERSUCKERS, and this Saturday is our chance to be a part of that 30 years’ celebration. They return to the YOT club to play their iconic album EVIL POWERS OF ROCK N ROLL plus all their hits and latest tracks. Those that saw them last time remember an epic night and those that weren't, remember hearing about it! Forming in Seattle in 1988 with peers like Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Dwarves and Mudhoney, the Supersuckers signed with legendary label SUB POP, consistently delivering countless shows across the globe with The Ramones and Motorhead. They deliver fun, sweatdriven rock ‘n’ roll, and as Lemmy himself said, "if you don't like The
Supersuckers you don't like rock ‘n’ roll". Lending weight to the celebration are New Zealand icons of independent punk rock for the last 30 years, STICKY FILTH. Returning on the back of their sell-out New Zealand tour late last year, we can expect another night of powerful hooks and classics, like ‘Weep Woman Weep’, ‘Astronaught’ and ‘Dig U Up’. Opening the night, is the current cream of Hamilton's talent, The Contenders and the sonic chaos of Illicit Wah Wahz. Kick off is at 8pm. Brought to you by Low Tide Presents with the unwavering hard work and support from Andy at The Yot Club. Check out Supersuckers' new and not so new singles on youtube, Born with a tail, History of rock ‘n’ roll, must of been high. Supersuckers play this Saturday at the YOT Club and are joined by STICKY FILTH, THE CONTENDERS and THE ILLICIT WAH WAHS.
Motörhead endorsed three-piece band, The Supersuckers.

T
he 32km James Bhutty 130 paddlers this year. The training in the waters off Moore-morial Race race is a tribute to James Mount Maunganui in July open ocean race attracted Moore, who drowned while 2008.
This year, the race had a strong presence from Raglan with seven paddlers in waka ama singles and one ocean kayak paddler. Two other Raglan paddlers, who had put in the long hours of training needed to compete in the event, had to sit the event out due to injuries. Adrian Kennedy was one of those competitors representing Raglan on race day, which coincided with his 16th birthday. Adrian has come a long way since he started paddling 18 months ago. He's had an incredible support and training crew, which has helped him achieve this growth. Up until six months ago, Adrian was also devoted to rugby and was planning a trip to Argentina with St Paul's Collegiate, but after a number of concussions he was told he couldn't play rugby any more. Heartbroken, Adrian turned his energy 100% to Waka Ama and paddled long hours to prepare himself over summer for this weekend’s race. Adrian completed the race in an impressive 3:38 mins. After the race he said he was relieved he had been able to, “paddle this sanctioned eventˮ, and was, “stoked with the
support of his Raglan mentors.ˮ Adrian placed third in the Under 21 division. “I had a feeling half way through the race that I am going to win a spot prize at the prizegiving and If I do I am going to give it to you.ˮ Fellow Raglan competitor Tim Duff had said to Adrian, while congratulating him after the race. Later at prizegiving, Tim won a Hamilton-made, quality Tuakana Customs paddle and, as promised, gifted it to Adrian in front of the large crowd. Adrian said he was, “blown away by the aroha and brotherhood.ˮ Tim was “super stokedˮ to have been able to gift Adrain the paddle and said, “mark my words - if Adrian keeps up the hard work, he will be a champion in the future. We should get behind him and do everything we can to help him become that champ. He has incredible role models around him such like Aaron and Daniel Kereopa. He’s laughing!ˮ Adrain said he's “inspired to keep training hard” and is “looking forward to upcoming events and competing in this race again next yearˮ.

Upper Wainui Road is one of the premier locations near the surf that seaside Raglan has to offer and this rare opportunity is the chance to purchase the largest bare lifestyle block historically subdivided in this prime area. The total land area is 2 hectares (5 acres) predominantly all in pasture and there’s 1.5 acres of near flat land for the building platform offering fantastic views to the north of the expansive Raglan harbour, township and Mt Karioi views to the south. The remaining land gently slopes to the north east with a small area of protected native bush, a wetland and a stream. No building covenants is a big bonus. The very best in the west!
