First of new children’s ‘mind-travel’ books a mother-daughter project

The Mind-Traveller -- a local mother-daughter collaboration.

L

ots of people receive a book for Christmas but Astrid Conjaerts Schepel’s was extra special – it was her own. But while Astrid wrote ‘The MindTraveller’ she has daughter Najade to thank for the drawings that bring the central character of the story to life as he journeys – in this, the first of a planned children’s series – to Cambodia in his boat-bed. Najade was “still making illustrations” for ‘The Mind-Traveller’ just a few months ago, Astrid told the Chronicle, right up until the day before she left for the Netherlands to study veterinary medicine. But the 20 year old was back home in Raglan for the book launch three days before Christmas in Cross St, where Astrid has a studio. “Never imagined I would be signing books,” this delighted first-time author posted on her Facebook page straight after the launch. Copies of ‘The Mind-Traveller’ had just arrived and she’d been quick to organise the celebration with family and friends. Astrid’s project – as she calls it – has been a few years in the making. “Actually it started here in the container where I have had office space to do translation and writing,” she reminded those at the launch. It’s where ‘The Mind-Traveller’ grew from an idea into a book, she said. Astrid loves to travel the world experiencing other cultures, and strongly

believes children too “open up” when they know more about another country themselves. “They will have more respect and tolerance.” So – motivated also by the “silly” books that younger daughter Isabeau brought home from the school library -- Astrid set her mind to writing a more educational children’s book herself.

First she did a creative writing course at the NZ Writers College. Then, inspired by Vaddey Ratner’s ‘In the Shadow of the Banyan’, she settled on Cambodia as the first country in a series to encourage mind-

travel. “Not everybody can travel the world,” she writes in her opening paragraph, “but everyone can travel in their mind.” So central character Jae – whose name means respect – floats in his boat-bed “on the deep blue ocean” and journeys to Cambodia in his dreams. Astrid even took a trip to Cambodia last year to fact-check her story. She chose Najade’s drawings over her own photos, which also meant selfpublishing “because publishers like to decide on illustrations themselves”. Astrid also found a printing company in Nelson rather than in China or elsewhere overseas, a move which coincidentally allowed her to order copies in hardcover as well as softcover, She attributes her project’s success to “several breaks” that helped with both

technicalities and self-confidence. Local scriptwriter Fiona Edwards and children’s author Sarah Johnson gave good advice, while award-winning Auckland author and mentor Janice Marriott edited her work to completion. Astrid, who is from the Netherlands but has lived in Raglan since 2011, has already begun writing her second mind-traveller book … on New Zealand. Edith Symes ‘The Mind-Traveller’ – for ages 6 to 10 – is stocked in Raglan at Zinnia, Soul Shoes and Show Off Aotearoa.

Raglan Lions New Year's Eve Parade

T

he annual Raglan Lion's New Year's Eve Parade was held on December 31 to an enthusiastic crowd of onlookers lining Bow St. A total of 28 floats entered the parade with 146 participants. "What a wonderful community we've got." said Raglan Lions Chair, Bob MacLeod. "The parade worked out well, everyone behaved. I'd like to thank the Raglan Community for their effort and we're looking forward to the next one." Winners on the day included first place for the Rooney's Whanau float 1737, second place for Raglan Annexa Vets and third place for the Gillet Whanau float WTA (Weather, Equipment, Tell Someone, Ability). In the wheels category, first place went to Raglan Engineering's entry Thomas the Tank Engine and second place to Marty Davies entry, Arkwright/ Petchells. Judges were impressed by collaboration on the entries as well as the very important messages that were communicated in the winning floats.

C

omplaining about younger generations has been a popular activity for a surprisingly long time. Socrates is often quoted bemoaning the contempt for authority that young people had in 470 BC, so at least 2500 years. These days I hear the term snowflake used to put down young people but given the bullying, dismissive and even abusive treatment that my generation was expected to put up with when we were young I wonder if they’re just standing up for themselves more than we used to. Whether or not that’s correct I’m trying to avoid using the word because I suspect it was coined by aging bullies, frustrated they couldn’t push young people around so easily any more. The thing is, when I look at the young people I know around Raglan I can’t help but be impressed. Of course there are still the ones doing crazy things and the ones that are clearly struggling but if we choose to focus just on the negative behaviour we miss the good stuff. Amongst the teenagers I meet I see a diverse group of people with their own individual characters - they’re creative and generous and care about the world around

4 RAGLAN Chronicle

them. I think they know themselves better than we did at that age and they’re certainly more confident than we were. I’ve also seen kids who would have been ostracised at the schools I went to being included and cared for by others their age - something I can’t help but be impressed with. There is a lot of fear though that they will be swallowed up by their smart phone screens, a fear the media is more than happy to stoke at regular intervals since it makes such wonderful click-bait. I seem to remember a similar panic when I was a kid - except in those days the object of fear was TV screens instead of phone screens. Personally I think this generation will get on top of this particularly modern issue. It’s pretty normal for most young adults to get focused after a bit of life experience – most of us did it at some stage and I’m pretty sure that most of today’s teens will adapt to these new-fangled screens in due course - except for those that never got addicted to the screens in the first place, because there’s actually a surprisingly high number of them. I did interview someone once who was concerned about too much screen time though - Ruth Beaglehole, founder of Parenting with Non-Violence said it was

definitely a concern of hers when I bought the subject up. She then went on to say that she was worried parents spent too much time looking at screens and that it was breaking their connection with the children - which kind of turned the issue on its head. Maybe it’s just Raglan kids who are giving me this sense of hope, or maybe just

the ones I meet - it's not like I’ve done a survey - but I’ve watched these kids grow up and I reckon I know them well enough to be justified in having a little faith in them. The Morning Show on Raglan Community Radio can be heard from 6-10am weekdays on 98.1FM or streaming live on www.raglanradio.com

Melding together the arts with Guerrilla Art Jam

Jayde Petaera.

G

et ready for the third edition of Guerrilla Art Jam at the Raglan Old School Arts Centre on Friday, January 31 starting at 7pm. A melding together of different art genres, Guerrilla Art Jam is the brainchild of Elisabeth Denis, who also works at the Arts Centre. The Old School will be transformed into an interactive art space, with live painting and local arts exhibition, performances by musos, poets and story-tellers. “You can expect to have all of your senses fulfilled and to be impressed by the talent coming from Auckland, Hamilton and Raglan. You can expect your belly to be full – thanks to Juan and his authentic tacos,” Elisabeth says. Originally from Montreal, Canada, Elisabeth hosted her first Art Jam in the city of her birth as a way of bringing the creative talents of her friends together in one space. “The goal was to congregate these humans into one big room and celebrate the arts in all its different forms in the hope of creating future collaboration or simply friendships,” she says. Her second art jam, dubbed the unlimited pancake edition, was a family affair with her grandma making the pancakes, her mom at the door and her stepdad serving the delicious maple syrup/chocolate pancakes. “Visitors paid $12 and got as many pancakes as they wished for. I really enjoyed doing it in Montreal because my family were wanting to be part of it too.” Since moving to Raglan in 2018, Elisabeth knew she was in the perfect place to recreate the art jam concept and the upcoming event is the third to be held at the Old School. A creative herself, Elisabeth studied communication and cinema, and she has taken her passion for photography and filmmaking on her travels around the world.

Ambro.

She came to New Zealand inspired by what she imagined to be a mostly untouched piece of paradise at the end of 2017. “When I first landed, Waipu Cove became my home for two months but the community was missing. I then moved to Ashram Yoga in the Coromandel to re-centre myself and think of the next move. I then met a lady, who is still living in Raglan, and she inspired me to go and see what Raglan has to offer,” she says. Raglan has been home now for the past two years and she explains, after her mother arrived for a holiday a short while later their plans on road-tripping around the North Island never eventuated. “Our first destination was Raglan. As many travellers have experienced, we never left. She eventually did, but I stayed.” Guerrilla Art Jam is a labour of love for Elisabeth; an opportunity to showcase a range of creativity with the wider community and honour the talents of the many friends she has made since making Raglan her home. “This is where we all come together on a Friday evening to eat yummy food, chillax to live music, get a quick portrait of your wonderful face, observe UV light live painting, bring back home a few pieces of art from the exhibition, treat yourself to a few minutes massage and don't forget to get some goodies from local artists.” The line-up of artists includes Ellie Skeet, Ambro Art, Gila Cohen, Seb Hart and musicians Gabrielle Dumberry, F.R.E.D, Tyra Paama, Jayde Petaera and band, and massage therapist Amber will be offering $1 per minute massages. Entry is by koha, and a licensed bar will be open and snacks will be available. Janine Jackson For more information contact elisabethdenis10@gmail.com or Facebook Guerrilla Art Jam.
