ormer Raglan district councillor and Waikato deputy mayor Clint Baddeley says it’s been “quite humbling and very emotional” to be made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the just-announced Queen’s Birthday Honours. The 70 year old – whose MNZM is for services to local government and the community – says the honour has come as a bit of a surprise and that “a lot of people have been very kind to me”. He knew officially just two weeks ago he was getting the gong, and his wife Jackie – who he married in downtown Raglan 50 years ago – was the only other person he let in on the secret. The MNZM citation covers a wide variety of roles in which Clint has served the Waikato over five decades. Those roles range from his work as convener of the Council of Trade Unions in the Waikato for 10 years to stints as a Wintec board member, as chair of the Waikato Community Trust, as Raglan district councillor for 12 years and as deputy mayor for three years.

The citation also highlights Clint’s long-running music show on Raglan Community Radio, his co-establishment of Raglan junior soccer and his five years as a voluntary Raglan ambulance driver. Clint – who’s lived in Raglan for the past 49 years – recalls it was difficult work as a top trade union organiser. “You cop a lot of flak, you’re often public enemy No 1,” he says. But he says he can look back on “some really good stuff too” in his various community service roles over the decades. He’s most proud of what he describes as his “Wintec building work”, heading up a committee that spearheaded the multimillion-dollar redevelopment of the tertiary educational institute’s Hamilton campus. “We wanted to make it the best student centre in New Zealand and I think we did.” Locally, Clint says, one of his greatest pleasures has been to see the success of Xtreme Zero Waste. He adds he only went into council (as ward councillor) to “get a bit of stuff done”, and reflects it was “12 years of my life that

was often quite difficult”. Clint remains very proud of the weekly ‘Americana’ programme he’s hosted on local community radio for 20-odd years now. Though he’s in ill health these days the station’s longest-running show goes on, and he even broadcast from home during the lockdown. The full citation for Clint’s MNZM reads: “Mr Clint Baddeley has served the Waikato region in a variety of capacities over the last 50 years. Mr Baddeley was the Convenor of the Council of Trade Unions in the Waikato region for 10 years, becoming involved with some of New Zealand’s largest manufacturing and dairy companies. He has served on a variety of boards, including the national board of Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics New Zealand from 2005 to 2008, and the board of WorldSkills New Zealand from 2015 to 2018. He chaired the Building and Assets Committee of the Waikato Institute of Technology for nine years, overseeing a $100 million campus redevelopment. He was Deputy Mayor of the Waikato District Council from 2007 to 2010 and

represented Raglan on the Council from 2004 to 2017. He chaired the Council’s strategy and Finance Committee for six years and chaired a committee formed between Hamilton City Council and Waikato District Council to oversee boundary changes. Experiences with a Pandemic at Raglan Rest Home and Hospital

he Pandemic called Covid 19 came as a shock to New Zealand – it was certainly not where we expected to spend the last warm months of the season. At Raglan Rest Home and Hospital (RRHH) we took measures early and have kept reviewing them as things have changed – always seeking to find a balance between safety and human compassion. To date we have been lucky – I say lucky as it hard to fight something you cannot visibly see – other facilities have not been so lucky, and we have deep compassion for them. We had illness and death during the last weeks and months as we often do. Part of our place in this world is to walk alongside those who are at the end of their life journey and partner with family and friends to make the time the best it can be. It was heartbreaking having to restrict family at this time and we strived hard to get the balance right. As part of the random testing of essential health workers we were all tested for Covid 19 and we were all negative – a few residents were tested during this time – and they were all negative too. I think going through the testing process, even though we were confident that we were all clear, was good learning for all of us about how the process feels. We put into place a few innovations that we got good feedback about from the auditors – we encouraged staff to do their shopping through us so they (or their family) didn’t need to have exposure at the shops; we put a cabin in the carpark for people to drop things off and pick things up this allowed couriers and family to exchange goods with zero contact and for goods to be decontaminated away from the building. The cabin was also used as accommodation for Staff on a few occasions; we had spare uniforms and staff could shower before going home if they desired.

Residents learnt a lot about technology as we kept families and church connected through video contact utilising Viber, FaceTime, Messenger, Zoom and Skype – concepts many had not used before. The Activities Co-ordinator continued working and innovated activities to suit the situation. We held a moving ANZAC service and raised our flag on the new flagpole for the first time, then dined on ANZAC biscuits made by the Residents. We celebrated Easter, Mother’s Day, Frock day and Queens birthday. We have added three new budgies – Gary, Barney and Yogi- to the family in recent weeks. We had a great volunteer pick-up the Meals on Wheels round as many of our usual volunteer drivers were in the “vulnerable group” and this was a service utilised by a wider cross section of the community than we would normally see. One of the challenges has been our inability to take Residents for a short drive or transport them to Hospital by road when required – so our next goal is to find a way to purchase a van that can transport the heavier electric wheelchairs, that other vans in the community are unable to do and have it available for those times when people just want to “get out of the building”, as well as planned outings and the spontaneous trips to see the Orca passing through Raglan, or have a freshly rolled ice cream. Transporting people who wish to come and join in our day activities program would help those who are isolated participate. So the journey continues and we remain cautious but optimistic that we have seen the last of COVID 19 in New Zealand and we can soon unlock our doors and let all of you come back in and share the future with us Maree - Raglan Rest Home and Hospital.

e were thrilled to reopen the clinic a few weeks ago and welcome back all the friendly faces we missed seeing in person over the lockdown. We are also excited to have a new addition to our team and are pleased to welcome Sam Lowes, a UK-trained Physiotherapist who is living with his family in Raglan. You may have already spotted Sam in the surf or running around the town. Sam has worked in hospital and outpatient settings in areas including intensive care, respiratory, orthopaedics and finally specializing in musculoskeletal Physiotherapy. He has a special interest in adapting strength and conditioning principles for rehabilitation. He is also Pilates trained and will be offering both services to clients in conjunction with usual Physiotherapy care. Sam is eager to introduce a strength and conditioning program specifically designed for surfers so be sure to keep an eye out for this. We also had Ruby Meade join our administrative team in February and have so enjoyed her presence

in the clinic. She moved into the role with ease and has been a pleasure to have around. Ruby keeps busy outside of the clinic running her own surf coaching business and completing her Polestar Pilates training. She has already been instructing classes and may cover the odd class for Tess in future. Ruby loves the outdoors and can often be found in the ocean or hanging with her two gorgeous dogs. With our expanding and diverse team we have a large range of services available at the clinic including strength and conditioning, home and gym-based rehabilitation, postural and corrective retraining, manual and manipulative therapy, acupuncture, massage, cranio-sacral therapy and mat and reformer-based Pilates. Change to Water Supply Charges for 2020/2021

aikato District Council has installed nearly 8,000 water meters in Raglan, Huntly, and Ngaruawahia over the last four years. Because some meters are more complex to install than others, there are 181 properties around the district connected to Council’s water supply without a water meter. Council is proposing to re-instate a Temporary Water Rate of $335.59 last charged in the 2017/2018 rating year on 1 July 2020 for properties that are connected to Council supply but have no

water meter that can calculate a volumetric charge for water use. This means that the unmetered properties’ water supply charges will be made up of two parts: their usual fixed Targeted Rate, as well as the Temporary Water Rate (instead of a volumetric charge based off of use). The not-for-profit, endorses environmentally-responsible cafes, promotes potters from Aoetearoa and other reusable products. Potters from as far away as Nelson, Christchurch and Central Otago, including a couple of amazing local ceramic artists West Coast Stoneware and Sarah Bing, contributed their wares to the competition. Each potter sent their cup via courier to Annika’s little café Clover and she says it has been like Christmas waiting for each cup to turn up. The cups won’t stay in Annika’s possession for very long, the competition criteria states that she sells them and donates the money to a local charity or organisation of her choice. “I love them all and it will be very hard to sell them but it will be good to see them go to new homes and support a local organisation that has supported me in my art journey.” Annika chose the Raglan Old School Arts Centre as the beneficiary of the money she raises. eople love their animals and one-time mountain guide Adam Fox reckons his last-ditch rescue of a sheepdog jammed down a five-metre tomo at Te Mata last week caused “more fuss” than the time he plucked a climber off a 300-metre cliff back in the United States.

But the Raglan resident who once trained American special forces and SWAT teams – as well as conducting risky mountain rescues – had to give it his best shot. “The thought of the dog being left down there was awful.” Hooking up a rope to the farmer’s four-wheeler, Adam abseiled into the narrow cave and had to shimmy down on a 45 -degree angle. It was “really tight ... horrible”, the 47 year old said, adding: “I hate caves.” But then he heard a whimper and got far enough down to touch the dog’s head with his toe. Tye had become jammed vertically while trying to scrabble upwards. “I shouted out (to those above) to get a shepherd’s crook dropped to me,” said Adam who then managed to pull the dog up by the neck so he could grab its collar and get it above him. Then he could push Tye back up the cave with one hand while making his ascent. All up the rescue took about 15 minutes, and Adam’s reception was more emotional than he’d expected. The two

farmers – Giles and his neighbour – were “so relieved”, he said. Giles Lusty told the Stuff website he rated Tye, his working dog of nine years, “as one of my best friends”. Adam, incidentally, later messaged the United States man he once rescued from a cliff, and with whom he is now a Facebook friend. “I told him that ‘people were making more of a fuss of a dog than they did of you when I got you off a mountain’,” Adam joked. His American rescue was also a last-ditch attempt as three different search-and-rescue teams had failed to get the man off the cliff. Adam is these days taking a break from guiding – which he describes as a high-risk job in which he’s lost many friends over the years – and running his own tiny homes business, Fox Cabins, out of Hamilton. Adam was fearing there might be a less-than-happy outcome as he drove out after dark on a gravel road “way past Bridal Veil Falls” to see if Tye could be retrieved. But what he wasn’t prepared for was to find “two gruff farmers nearly in tears” – as was his wife, Megan – after he finally surfaced with the terrified dog. Tye had slipped off a rock into a tomo hours earlier in the day while heading off a couple of sheep on Giles Lusty’s farm. And although he’d been barking sporadically throughout the afternoon as the fire service attempted a rescue, by night he’d become silent. “I thought it (the dog) was probably a goner,” Adam told the Chronicle. He’d figured there was less than a five percent chance his rescue attempt would end well.
