percent may have agreed to a lower rate and further development of the system. I understand the service will continue to be funded by WDC for a further month and that XZW are planning to find other funding to continue beyond 1st July. I urge that both the Council and the wider community work with Xtreme Zero Waste in finding a way to retain this valuable Community service.Ngā mihi nui Dave Currie

Dear Editor The fuss over the gardens down town over the last two weeks highlights for me the whole issue of the consultation process of council. All councils in NZ are required by law to consult with their communities. Most if not all councils work at fulfilling this requirement. As an Elected Member for WDC, I know from firsthand experience that our council is committed to this. But consulting is far from straight forward for these reasons: Most ratepayers don’t have the time to follow council business. Most ratepayers are in fact not interested in council business. This is no better evidenced at the turn out at the Triennial

Elections. In 2016 only 31% of eligible voters turned out in our district. The National average was 42% compared to Central Government where turnout is around 82%. I am the first to agree that council doesn’t always get things right but that doesn’t detract from the fact that they do try. So back to the gardens. In this instance Council certainly did inform. Did they consult? Perhaps we could discuss that. Did they get the project right? According to people that know a lot more about gardening then I do, they did. Alan Vink Disclaimer. This is a personal viewpoint only and does not represent the Raglan Community Board or WDC.

Dear Editor I was disappointed to read that the District Council has voted to discontinue the funding of the kerbside food waste collection. Their reason, as I understand, was that the community did not support the project in a recent survey. My reading of the survey results does not in fact support that view. 70 percent of respondents supported the proposal but acknowledge that only 40 percent would agree to the targeted rate proposed. The senior title went to Raglan dairy farmer Jason Dickey and Coby Rooks took out the junior title at the championships. Peanut Butter girls, Enfys, left, and Alaia, launched their business at the Old School creative markets during May.

E

nfys and Alaia Hewitt are the creators of Raglan’s very first peanut butter

enterprise successfully launched at May’s Raglan Creative Market. The girls - Enfys, 10 and Alaia, 8 - are nuts about their product and say the best part of the business is sharing their PB23 journey with local peanut butter lovers. “I like selling at the market and speaking about what we make to people,” Alaia says. With their dad Mett Hewitt mentoring them, the girls are about to sell their second batch of smooth and crunchy peanut butter at this Sunday’s Creative Market at the Raglan Old School Arts Centre. “I’ve always wanted the girls to have a little business. Something they could use to fund their uni studies,” Matt says. The peanut butter journey hasn’t always been smooth and some jobs were very labour intensive. Initially the sisters had been doing the shake and bang method to remove air pockets from the jars in order to fill them to capacity, which was taking two minutes per jar.

Matt enlisted a technically-savvy friend and some number eight wire mentality to design an agitator to help the peanut butter settle in the jar. The pair adapted an orbital sander which reduced the time it took to seven seconds. Both girls say the agitator is one of the jobs they love the most in the whole peanut butter process. Matt has helped the girls in the various ventures they have undertaken and with every little setback they have not lost their desire to run their own business. “They’ve tried woodworking, making bangles and other things but as soon as we have to make a large quantity the quality wasn’t so good,” Matt says. With the PB23 peanut butter the sisters can guarantee they use nothing but 100 percent peanuts and the quality is the same in every jar. The girls are big fans of using their peanut butter in cooking and have created fudge, cookies, dog treats and bird feeders with PB23. Check them out at the Raglan Creative Market this Sunday, June 9 from 10am-2pm and get some peanut butter tips from the experts. Janine Jackson

Pohutukawa tree trimming carried out by wrong Waikato District Council staff

Celebrating 65 Years of the Raglan Volunteer Fire Brigade: A monthly column profiling local volunteer fire fighters who dedicate themselves to keeping the community safe. This column is proudly sponsored by Raglan Four Square.

A

s part of the 65 year celebrations for the Raglan Fire Brigade. this week we spoke to Dirk De Ruysscher and Wheturangi Tepania.

T

he pohutakawa on the corner of Bow St and Norrie Ave caused concern recently with locals unsure of who had hacked at low-hanging branches leaving the debris at the base of the tree. Many took to Facebook to express their disgust at the lack of care taken by the anonymous tree-cutter. At first, it was thought the tree trimming was the work of a vandal and when the Raglan Chronicle made enquiries Waikato District Council was unaware of any maintenance scheduled for the tree. A council spokesperson says in normal circumstances, any tree maintenance is carried out on the direction of council’s community connections team and therefore, it was initially presumed that this work was not done by council. Staff investigated and viewed CCTV footage which showed the work

was carried out by council’s roading team Waikato District Alliance. The roading crew were incorrectly given a service request on Friday afternoon after a member of the public made an urgent request to have the tree looked at after they hit their head on a low-hanging branch. While staff crew were on site a decision was made to trim the branch to remove the hazard. It is council policy that this sort of work is always carried out by a trained arborist however this was not the case in this instance. A WDC spokesperson says council realises the tree is much-loved by the community and they sincerely apologise for not following due process. An arborist has since visited the tree and tidied up the site. Remedial work has been completed and council will continue to assess the tree in the coming months. Janine Jackson

When you're about to bomb off the bridge with your kids and the siren goes off - it can be a challenge What do you gain from the experience? Leaning new skills is epic but the people you meet and the relationships you make is priceless What aspect do you find the most difficult? Dyana’s childhood was full of Raglan Grandma’s sticky brown bread and Christmas puddings, launching off the footbridge into strong currents, uncovering adzes and coral in the dunes, and erecting shimmering black sandcastles.… She has moved back from Auckland and a career which included teaching Human Anatomy and Physiology, Chemistry, Yoga and Meditation. She established the 200 and 300 hour Yoga Teacher Training Program at Kawaipurapura and the Contemporary Yoga Teachers Training Program in Remuera and is now looking forward to offering all her skills to the Raglan community. She has set up a teaching space – Open Ground – at her home in Lily Street. Starting 25th June she will be running weekly classes in Somatics, Kum Nye, Meditation, Creative VIsualisation and Buddhist Philosophy. Some of these names may sound new and exotic but she assures us that the classes are

very accessible to anyone who is curious. Somatics are gentle attentive exercises designed to help the brain reprogram the way we move. They are very effective in releasing pain, tension and restriction. The results can be startling and are suitable for older people, yoga students and everyone in-between. Kum Nye, which comes from the Tibetan tradition, consists of slow moving meditations

Somatics is a relatively new brand, and has become extremely popular around the world. It grew out of Feldenkrais, and developed alongside new research into neuromuscular reprogramming. Many yoga studios in Australia now offer classes in Somatics as a complement to yoga. Somatics is based on the principle of neuroplasticity – the understanding that the brain is continually remodelling itself in response to new information and experience. Movement limitations creating tension and pain are not permanent, however old we are. The term Somatics comes from ‘soma’ which means to understand the body as an intelligent, sensitive, living organism. The body is not a mechanical insensate machine that we need to manipulate and control in order to get results. Our body/brain organism has millions of years of evolution behind it. It knows how to move well. Wth somatics we find out why it is not able to do this. We find out what is getting in the way. The job of somatic exercise is to help the brain do its job properly. The brain controls the way we move, so if we want to change the way we move we need to work with the brain. Neuromuscular reprogramming is the name given to this approach. We work with the brain by feeding it new information, which in this case is information about how we are actually moving. We wake the brain up to what is actually going on. The problem for us is that when the brain learns a new movement pattern – eg how to ride a bike, how to sign one’s name, how to protect an injured arm, how to not be noticed, how to cope – it may be a healthy pattern or not. After a few weeks of repetition the brain sends the pattern code to older parts of the brain, for repetitive unconscious reflex activation. The pattern becomes an unconscious

focused on sensing. They allow the mind to calm down so the body can heal. There will also be classes in Meditation starting with mindfulness practices, and Buddhist Philosophy, which is an opportunity to ask questions and probe the mystery of our minds. Check out the classes on her website www. dyanwells.com or email her at dyanawells@ gmail.com and try them out.

habit. This frees the upper parts of the brain for new learning. What is now a restrictive and maybe painful movement was, at the time it was learned, the best response possible to the circumstances. It may not serve us well now. It may be crippling us. How do we change? Slow movement done with awareness allows the brain to wake up again –to what is actually going on. It can then automatically reorganise our movement to become smooth and easy. It will tell the tight muscles to relax and it will integrate movement throughout the whole body. The circumstances are now different. We just need to alert the brain to this. Somatic exercises are disarmingly simple, extremely effective and very enjoyable. There is no requirement to be flexible or fit. The only requirement is to be curious and attentive. Everyone can benefit from the exercises. I have found them immensely valuable, even after a lifetime of yoga. I couldn’t believe how they freed up my body. Results happen very quickly and can bring a greater freedom to whatever activities we enjoy, eg: gardening, walking, cycling, surfing, yoga, dancing, swimming. ‘Our sensory motor systems continually respond to daily stresses and traumas with specific muscular reflexes. These reflexes create habitual muscular contractions, which we cannot voluntarily relax. The result is stiffness, soreness and a restricted range of movement…. Somatic exercises are a direct way to reprogram the sensory-motor system… and reverse this process. Bodily (limitation) presumed under the myth of aging is not inevitable. It is, by and large, both avoidable and reversible.’ Thomas Hanna, Somatics. ‘When activity is freed of tension and superfluous effort the resulting ease makes for greater sensitivity and better discrimination, which makes for greater ease in action.’ Moshe Feldenkrais. Awareness through Movement ‘You have to consciously become aware of your entire body and how it feels and moves….. Then, when you have the brain perceiving differences and integrating more parts of yourself, the improvement is fast and transformational.’ Anat Baniel

ack for another gruelling event, we spoke to organiser of Raglamn Karioi Taril, Francois, to get the details for this year's event. When is RKT this year? This is the 7th edition of the Raglan Karioi Trail and it’s on Saturday 14 December 2019. Same distances as last year: the main one - 24km, then the discover Karioi 10km and the 5km family run. When did registration open? Registration opened the 1st of June and we offer good deals for early and family registrations. Has the event changed much over the years? The RKT formula remains the same over its 7 years existence: still the same grassroots event vibes and atmosphere, which is why we will have a 400 limited entry this year. We like it this way! We want to keep it small for every one to have a chance to feel part of the event. We are focusing on improving the participant experience every year, providing well maintained tracks and a good time before and after the race. This is a local event. Same local sponsors for years, most of the volunteers are returning every year to help, and we have a good crew of Raglan runners every year too. What can we expect this year?

You can expect a wonderful post-run BBQ and drinks. We cater for vegans and are open to other dietary requirements. Who should consider this event and what fitness level is required? Yes the 24km is tough, this is why we recommend to start with a 10km if you don’t have much experience in running. If you register for 24km, you will need to train or you will find it hard to finish.
All finishers, no matter the distance, will be pleased with themselves. Maybe not straight after crossing the line, but afterwards, with what they've achieved. Does Karioi Trail implement any sustainability practices? One of our main goals is to keep the event footprint small by: providing reusable plates and glasses post-race and at drink stations; keeping Karioi's tracks clean; not providing mass-produced finishing medals for everyone - they just end up in landfill!! Our other big focus is to look after the Karioi mountain. We stipulate that all participants must bring clean shoes to the event to prevent diseases such as Kauri dieback being brought here. We have also gone into partnership with Karioi Project which includes volunteering for them!!" Everyone needs to find their happiness when they take part in the Raglan Karioi Trail. Anyone can enter the event, we want to share our love for Karioi. There is something for everyone.

Sixty percent of the 774 submissions received during the consultation period said they would not be willing to support a targeted rate of $79.29 for the service to continue. At today’s Strategy and Finance meeting [May 29] Councillors debated the merits of the service at length. Discussion and debate focused on the need to listen to our community, the leadership required to protect our planet, the impacts of waste on climate change and financial implications on the ratepayers throughout the district.

Councillors were divided on the approach that should be taken, but opted to vote for option two. This means that the Strategy and Finance Committee are recommending to Council that it should not implement the proposed targeted rate. Raglan kerbside foodwaste collection would therefore be discontinued on 30 June 2019. The Committee did indicate they looked forward to discussing a possible district-wide kerbside foodwaste collection service in the future as part of the upcoming solid waste review. This review is due to start later this year. Today’s resolution still needs to be agreed by Council, which is due to take place at next month’s full Council meeting on Monday 10 June. Matariki to be celebrated with art, food, music and storytelling

W

aikato District Council is supporting a variety of events across the district to mark Matariki, the Maaori New Year, which will be celebrated between 25 June and 3 July this year. The largest of these is the seventh Matariki Festival hosted by Te Whare Toi o Ngaaruawaahia – Twin Rivers Community Art Centre with the support of more than $6,000 from the Creative Communities Scheme and from discretionary Council funding. This year the Ngaruawahia festival is based around one of the stars in the Matariki constellation, Tupuaanuku, which is associated with the soil and its bounty, and it includes the development of collaborative ceramic art work in all nine primary and pre-schools in Ngaaruawaahia. Ceramic artist David Kenny is working with the students to make ceramic tiles to create a Pare (door lintel) as a permanent art work for each school. It will culminate in a day of celebration at the Twin Rivers Community Art Centre (27pm, Saturday 20 July) to open an exhibition of the art work, including a large mural of the wings of the kotare (kingfisher) created by local tamariki (children) on a related arts programme, with performances by local tamariki and artists, storytelling, a live performance by the Matariki Glow Show and a celebration with traditional kai and mahi toi. A weekly art class for adults led by David Kenny at the Twin Rivers Community Art Centre will also contribute ceramic tiles for a permanent public art installation on the pergola in the public open square in Jesmond St, Ngaaruawaahia. Waikato District Council Iwi and Community Partnerships Manager Sam Toka

says, “Our district is home to Waikato-Tainui as well as a wider Maaori community and it’s rich in Maaori history, culture and tradition. As well as being informative and entertaining, we hope that our district Matariki activities and events will help to educate, inform and raise awareness of the practices and traditions of Matariki locally and regionally.” In Raglan, part of the funding pool of nearly $4,000 from the Council’s iwi liaison budget will also support a musical performance by singer/songwriter Teia Kennedy, lit by clay Matariki lanterns, on 22 June at the Raglan Old School Arts Centre Gallery The annual Waikato District Libraries Matariki art and poetry competition is also now open, with prizes available in three different age groups. Please pick up an entry form from any Waikato District Council office or library, or download it here: www. waikatodistrict.govt.nz/matariki. Entries close on Friday 14 June. If there is a future community project or event for which you are seeking financial assistance, there are a number of funding opportunities available from the Council to help make it happen. The Council’s Discretionary Grants Fund is open for applications again this week and closes on 5 July, and the Creative Communities Fund is again open for applications on 19 July and closes on 23 August. The Heritage Project Fund is currently open for applications and closes on 28 June. Our occasional series on locals with a real Raglan history behind them

Stoic great-grandson keeps the Jackson homestead fire burning

Malcolm outside his remote Ruapuke home built by great-grandfather J F Jackson in 1880.

M

alcolm Jackson’s lived his whole life “off and on” at Ruapuke – on a harsh hill country block south of Te Toto Gorge, in the shadow of Mt Karioi but with stunning views out over the Tasman Sea. He not only still farms the bulk of the land his great-grandfather John F Jackson bought and named ‘Te Reke Reke’ – the name Maori gave to a distinctive stone on the property that appeared to have a footprint on it – but also lives to this day in the original homestead J F built back in 1880. It is the only home in the Raglan district that has been occupied by the same family for more than a century. And as R T Vernon says in “Around Raglan” – one of a handful of histories he published on the Raglan district – much of the quaint original construction made from pit-sawed timber still stands as a memorial to J F’s pioneering spirit. “He built this house with a few old-fashioned tools, learning as he built,” Vernon wrote. John F Jackson had recently sailed from London to New Zealand aboard the 940-ton Waimea, and while on the voyage was persuaded by an old friend into “taking up land” in Taranaki under a deferred payment system being offered at the time. J F recounted that subsequently one of the sailors on board, who had been in Raglan, asked him: “Why pay for land in New Plymouth when you can get land in the Raglan district for just paying the survey fees?” And so began the Jackson family’s long association with Ruapuke and the Raglan district.

12 RAGLAN Chronicle

Ruapuke’s always been something of an outpost, and R T Vernon records that the Jackson homestead was one of the last to be serviced with electric power. Grid electricity came to Ruapuke only in the 1960s, the decade Malcolm was born. His family had depended on a generator in the ‘50s, and before that it was the kerosene lamps of old. Back in Malcolm’s childhood when his father Tom farmed the property – having taken it over from his father Jack B Jackson who had in turn inherited it from J F – the homestead housed his family of seven in its four bedrooms. An upstairs loft was added in 1987, kauri floorboards were unearthed and polished up in 1992 and in 2005 Malcolm had the roof retiled with heritage assistance fund money from Waikato District Council. Council was keen to “keep the right aesthetic”, Malcolm told the Chronicle. Apart from those changes, the homestead remains largely the same. An ancient-looking and now unused coal range occupies a corner of the kitchen, and an old fireplace heats the living room next door. The house feels its age, as you’d expect of a 140-year-old homestead in such an exposed location. Malcolm is mystified over where the kauri was sourced but the 1500 bricks for the two chimneys came from Alf Steadman, a brickmaker and bricklayer who lived at the bottom of Stewart St and built many chimneys in and around Raglan including at the original Harbour View Hotel. Malcolm has had his breaks from the farm: he was a Hamilton

Boys High School boarder, did farming diplomas at Waikato Technical Institute and Massey University, and has family who step in when he wants to get away for the odd holiday. But the stoic 56 year old seems largely content with his lot on the property he first leased from his father in 2000 and then bought eight years later. It’s a good life, he insists, which makes an “okay” livelihood. Cattle and sheep graze the hills as they did generations ago, though land leased to Te Pahu beekeepers now also provides a “major income stream”.

The original 1,100 acres farmed by his forebears has been almost halved, however, because a couple of decades ago DOC bought the northern half of his property to ensure an intact sequence of forest from mountaintop to coast. The land he gets around with a farm bike and heading dog does not extend now much beyond the Whaanga Rd cattle-stop – the one seen on the quirky surfing-themed NZTA anti-drink driving advert – that lies just north of his driveway. Malcolm may keep the homestead fire burning but other family members have settled closer to town, among them his father Tom and Tom’s sister – Malcolm’s aunt – Betty Rawley, both in their nineties. Interestingly, Betty has in safekeeping her pioneering grandfather J F Jackson’s 1900 diary, a 221-page insight into the trials and tribulations of daily life at Ruapuke and around the district. While Betty confesses she “doesn’t do much in the community now”, she is proud of having had a pivotal role in transforming onceovergrown farmland – linked to her heritage – into Raglan’s tranquil 10-hectare bush park on Wainui Rd. For 25 years she and other ‘Friends of Wainui’ volunteers have planted and maintained the native reserve described as one of Raglan’s best-kept secrets. Now living adjacent to the park in a rammed earth house, Betty was recently walking its tracks with son Geoff – visiting from Perth – and pointing out some of the mature cabbage and puriri trees she’d put in the ground as saplings. Not far from Betty lives a niece in what, way back, was Betty’s mother Clara’s house, after her father J B Jackson died. This was a converted barn on Betty’s parents’

secondary property where they had all lived so the five children could go to the old school in Stewart Street. It was either that or correspondence on the farm at remote Ruapuke, recalls this quirky nonagenarian. Geoff meantime looks forward to an annual trip home from Australia, where he settled long ago, to catch up with family including siblings in Hamilton and Raglan West and of course his cousins from the Jackson side of the family in town and out on the farm. Living across the ditch, he has little contact with the fifth generation Jacksons – and their children, the sixth generation – who grew up here and attended the area school but have so far settled elsewhere. But at 59 he does have fond memories of an idyllic childhood growing up in Whale Bay, when an outing to the farm meant getting a lift only as far as the vehicle access road went – to the old woolshed-cum-home on top of the first Whaanga Rd ascent – before walking the rest of the way to Te Toto Gorge and then quite a hike to the old homestead. He also remembers heading the other way into town for lollies and ice creams at what was then the Duck Inn dairy (now Isobar), and to the wharf to catch sprats. As for their old Whale Bay home with its little “honey house”, Geoff recognised it in the real estate pages of a recent Chronicle and showed his mother. “My house and property out there,” Betty exclaimed aghast, “was on the market for $1.9 million!” Edith Symes
