etting the work/surf balance right is the driving force behind Raglan’s newest pottery enterprise Westcoast Stoneware. The three friends and avid surfers, Beach Thurlow, Mikey Nation and Kyle Denton are the creative force behind the stunning handcrafted homeware items created in a carport transformed into a workshop. “You get to work when you want and surf when you want. I can throw some pottery in the morning, go out for a surf and finish off in the evening,” Mikey says. They began their potting journey in February this year; Beach set up the business and website and contracted Mikey as a potter and Kyle came on board as a volunteer helping hand for Mikey in the workshop. They have skills that work well together in the business; Beach has a background in graphic design and marketing, Mikey worked as a production potter in the States, Australia and New Zealand and Kyle recently finished his ceramic arts degree at San Francisco State University. Setting up the business has been an exercise in creativity in many ways; they travelled the country to pick up second-hand equipment and cobbled together a ‘studio’ with a 100kg prehistoric wheel, raku kiln, mis-matched shelves, a bench balancing on a broken pug machine, a pile of bricks and an old wardrobe minus the handle. They’ve had to be creative about their finances as well, pursuing other sources of income while still trying to establish the business. After producing their first range the money dried up and Beach headed to the
States for three months to work as a surf instructor and Mikey contracted tree planting jobs around New Zealand. When an order came through Beach – who maintains accounts and the online shop - contacted Mikey, who ditched the tree planting job to fill the order, then it was back to another tree planting job once the order was filled. They look to each other for creative guidance in the stoneware they produce, and know they’ve got something right when they all like the end product. The beauty of pottery is the craftsperson never really knows what the final product is going to look like, taking it from the greenware stage (stoneware has that not yet been bisque fired), to bisque firing, then glazing and a final firing is a magical process. “Most potters will average around 80% (uniformity), that’s pretty much as good as you can get it,” Mikey says. “We are sitting around 90%,” Beach says. But there’s beauty in the seconds as well, “people have lots of cool uses for it and that’s fun to see,” Kyle says. They do custom orders of plates, bowls, mugs, platters, ramekins, candles, planters, vase in any shape, size and glaze, applying a company logo mark by embossing or painting it. Moving the business along required Beach to put on his salesman hat and hit the roads, from Wellington, Taranaki and on to Auckland, to show potential customers their wares, while Mikey and Kyle kept the workshop going. “It’s better doing it in person and I like to meet with people as much as I can and give them the chance to physically hold a beautiful piece of pottery,” Beach says.
They’re now producing orders for Iko Iko in Wellington and Ripe Deli in Auckland. The road trip also saw them change their focus to take-away coffee cups and they have a popular range of stunning glazes. It fits with their ethos of trying to be a zero-waste business; they even reuse the plastic bags the clay comes to cover unfinished clay pieces and are working with their supplier to refill bags they return with clay. “Most of our waste is the dried/broken clay which goes back into the earth,” Beach says. “As surfers, the environment plays a huge part in our lives, we’re very conscious about it. We want to stop the single-use and have fun surfing and working while we’re doing it,” Kyle says. The work is full on at the moment with Christmas fast approaching and the three will have to balance the surf with the work but they’re all loving the lifestyle the business allows them. There’s a local Christmas order of cups that will be seedling planters initially and transform back into drinking cups once the seedlings are ready to be planted outside. With plans for expansion on the horizon and a potential move to a bigger workshop in Raglan, there’s also the realisation that they may need more workers. “We would love get our friends on board to help – that’s how Mikey started,” Beach says. “I want people to be their own independent pottery contractors and be able to surf and work like we do,” Mikey says. Raglan Karioi Trail event founder proud of young local runners Have you built up the distance over time? Cory: Yes. I did the Mini Karioi Trail twice, then the 10km once and the 24km relay with Ngakau for the last two years and again this year. Riley: Yes. I did the Mini Karioi Trial twice and this will be my fourth year doing the 10km race.

T
he Raglan Karioi Trail event is in its 7th year and founder Francois Mazet suggested to the Chronicle that we catch up with a couple of the young local runners, Riley and Cory Hartgill, who have competed every year. Francois encourages young runners to get involved in this adventure event. “It makes me happy and proud to have them involved, representing the community and enjoying the Karioi maunga who is standing right there.” How many years have you competed in the RKT? Cory: This will be my 6th year because the first event in 2013 did not have a youth distance. Riley: This will be my 6th year What do you do to prepare for the event? Cory: I do a lot of hill training and a bit of endurance Riley: Nothing
Tell us about the experience for you ? Is it a tough challenge? Cory: It's a pretty tough challenge because of the wild west coast terrain. It's cool when I get to the top because of the good view. It's fun because other runners talk to me and tell me I'm doing well. Riley: It's fun because there's lots of people doing it who encourage me during the race. It's tough because Karioi is so high. What does it feel like to complete it? Cory: I feel relieved when I cross the finish line because it's a hard and tiring race. I get a bit nervous about how many people are watching and competing. Riley: Exciting because there's lots of people cheering at the finish line and it feels good to finish a really hard race. Are there many young runners that get involved ? Many friends? Cory: I do the 24km relay with my friend. What would you say to other young runners who might be interested ? Cory: Just give it a go and do some preparation before the race. Go hard on the day and have fun. Riley: I would tell them to do it because it's fun and a good experience. Wear grippy shoes if you have some and make sure they fit good or your toes hurt running down to the finish.

Local young runners: brief history The Raglan Karioi Trail started in 2013 with the 24km option. In 2014 the 2km kids race was added to the menu. And then the 10km in 2016. From last year a 5km family race replaced the 2km. From 2014 and the first edition of the 2km, lot’s of local kids were participating (see above photo). Then during the intervening years, most of them ran longer distances like the 5km, 10km or 24km relay. The Hartgill brothers, Riley and Cory are the only young runners to run five editions. After two years on the 2km, Riley started to run the 10km - at the age of 8 years old! Riley finished 14th overall last year. Cory won the 24km relay edition in 2017 with his friend Ngakau Benseman and they finished 2nd last year on the same distance.

f not for Daiki Nishiyama’s determination to find a way to both surf and earn a living here, then one of the healthier of Raglan’s takeaway options might never have become entrenched in the local cuisine over the past 15 years or so. Two decades ago, fresh out of high school in Auckland, Daiki had moved to Manu Bay with his family and needed work. But local jobs were still few and far between back then so Daiki got inventive, started making sushi from home and – at Rangi Kereopa's suggestion – began catering for the local surf comps. The traditional dish he’d grown up with – in his native Japan, then in cosmopolitan Auckland – “sold quite well” among the surfing fraternity, he recalls, and five years later Daiki set up Aloha Sushi in the corner shop of what was then the Hong Kong Kitchen building. Now it’s located across the way in between the local butchery and herbal dispensary, business is booming and at some point the Hawaiian word ‘Aloha’ has been dropped from the sushi bar’s name in favour of the more culturally apt ‘Aroha’. Fifteen years on from starting the business downtown Daiki – now 37 – still gets to surf when he wants, he’s got his family behind him at the shop and he’s proud that whole new generations of youngsters have grown up knowing all about sushi and its healthy eating benefits. Says his sister Maki, 32, who worked in the shop early on while studying for her degree at Waikato University: “The food’s all really fresh, custom-made.” It’s authentic Japanese, she explains, unlike the Chinese or Korean-made sushi in the city malls. It is a slice of their unique culture. “But with a Kiwi influence,” Daiki adds. Their mother Setsuko and youngest brother Manu were also at the shop when the Chronicle called by over Labour Weekend. They were helping Daiki out while one or two other locals,
also Japanese, were busy behind the counter and in the kitchen. Maki – who these days is putting her communications degree to good use as editor of the Chronicle – remembers the sushi shop used to open only three or four days a week and close during winter when they would go away for a holiday. “Now it’s all year round.” She came to Raglan as a teenager about to start her secondary education at the area school, becoming both head girl and dux in year 12. She’d arrived in New Zealand as a one year old because her parents wanted something better for their children than the concrete jungle of Tokyo. And by ultimately coming to Raglan the family got the small-town coastal lifestyle of their dreams. While Maki and Daiki have remained here ever since, the rest of the family lived down-country in Taranaki for a time. But Setsuko and Manu have now returned and are also working in the business. Setsuko says she loves living in Raglan again, and that Maki and Daiki wanted to stay here when the rest of them shifted away. Manu – named after the famous surf break – was too young to leave behind back then but reckons he’s as comfortable here as there. Now 20, he’s the only one of the family born in New Zealand. And, as with Daiki, getting involved in the sushi business has taken precedence so far over going on to university. Setsuko gives clear reasons for the move from Japan thirty years ago. “I wanted my children growing up here. I wanted my kids speaking English.” And the fact there was neither nuclear power nor the tense political climate of her homeland at the time provided added incentive. ll outdoor bowls tournaments are determined by the weather and this was no exception. A field of 16 teams turned out from Putaruru Cambridge, Taupiri, Huntly, Claudlands, Frankton Railway ,Pio Pio, Frankton Junction, and two composite teams on Thursday 24th October to contest the Raglan two bowl triples tournament. Ray White Raglan Real Estate kindly sponsored the tournament and did an amazing job of promoting their properties for sale and their team in a very friendly professional manner a big thank you for your sponsorship. Third place getters were one of our local Raglan teams comprising of Ross Turner, Blue Stephens and Eileen Stephens. 2nd Place getters went to the Claudlands club.
1st place went to the composite team made up of Mike Gray, Laurie Greene, Julie Hanna (sponsor) and Terry Green. Unfortunately only three of the four games were played due to rain however a result was obtained and a great day was had by everyone. Neuroplasticity refers to the brain’s ability to adapt and develop beyond the usual period of childhood. For many decades, it was thought that the brain was a “non-renewable organ.” Scientists believed that brain cells would slowly die as we aged, whether we attempted to keep them or not.Neuroplasticity was first coined by Polish neuroscientist Jerzy Konorski in 1948 observed changes in cells that make up our brains. He believed that the brain had the resources to restore cells, old connections and lost functions that have not been used in some time. He suggested that it was possible to improve memory, and even re develop overall learning skills even as we grow older. The decade of the brain Despite much research his ideas were not taken seriously until the 1990’s when modern technology demonstrated that the brain continues to create new neural pathways and alter existing ones. The brain is able to adapt to new experiences, learn new information, and create new memories as we age. So important was this ‘new knowledge' that George W.H. Bush declared the 90’s as the 'decade of the brain'. A healthy life style While our brains may not be as flexible as we age and disease and injury may slow things down, with careful life style changes it is possible to regenerate the brain. A healthy diet, plenty of exercise and a positive attitude, can help keep our brains functioning in our twilight years. programmes as well as art and craft classes, social gatherings and gardening activities. Notice of herbicide spraying Waikato Regional Council advises that under Resource Consent 124871 spraying of pest plants growing in aquatic and semi-aquatic locations will continue over the next three months. Pest plants to be sprayed are listed in the Regional Pest Management Plan and include (but are not limited to): alligator weed, Manchurian wild rice, sagittaria, Senegal tea, spartina and yellow flag iris. Herbicides to be used are haloxyfop, imazapyr, metsulfuron-methyl and triclopyr. Application method is location dependent and may be by helicopter, gun and hose, mistblower or knapsack.
