Surprise 90th birthday lunch at wharf for Raglan identity of old

R

aglan was his “favourite place to live” – and Bob McNeil, who owned the Raglan West store back in the 60s, enjoyed an unexpected trip down memory lane recently when his daughter sprang a surprise birthday celebration on the sprightly 90 year old.

Bob gets into the spirit of things at his surprise party as sister-in-law Ngaire eggs him on.

“Whose idea was it to come to Raglan?” a delighted Bob asked of friends and family seated at The Wharf Kitchen and Bar last Saturday afternoon. “I’m surprised...it’s a big surprise,” he told the Chronicle, grinning broadly. “I’m overwhelmed!” Despite not seeing so well any more, Bob had bussed alone all the way from Awakeri Hot Springs where he now lives to visit daughter Claire Andrews in Hamilton. She’d talked of taking him out to lunch “but I certainly never dreamed of anything like this”, he laughed, looking around at 20odd birthday guests including sister-in-law Ngaire Roberts from Te Mata and nephew Brad Johnstone (a former All Black) from Auckland. Bob not only ran the Raglan West store for a few years – living with his family behind the shop – but was also a local fire brigade volunteer and a postie on a pushbike back in the day. He was a wharfie too, and recalled responding ‘pronto’ to early-morning phone calls advising a boat was coming in. Bob also remembered the late Tex Rickard was “in charge of getting the staff” to come and unload. Nephew Brad, who hadn’t been back to Raglan since staying with his uncle here 50 years ago, reckoned this town was definitely Bob’s favourite place to live. He himself fondly remembered floundering up the estuary with a tilley lamp and spear. Edith Symes

Gumboot it up at Raglan Area School

S

tudents and teachers from Raglan Area School as well as other members of the community took part in Gumboot Friday last week in support of mental health for young people. Last year in New Zealand 137 young people died by suicide and it is estimated another 3500 attempted to take their own lives. While Government agencies are doing their best some kids are stuck waiting up to six months to receive the counselling they so urgently need. Gumboot Friday is part of a campaign run by Mike King's charitable organisation, I Am Hope.

War of the pumpkins at Raglan’s Crop Swap I was just starting my garden. I had no veges yet, but did have some extra dirt. I went home with seeds and plants, and a couple months later I was very excited to bring back greens from my own garden.” Crop Swap has been operating in Raglan for the past two years, every first and third Sunday of the month at the Raglan Bowling Club starting at 9.30am – the next Crop Swap is Sunday, April 21. aglan’s crop swappers pitted pumpkin against pumpkin at the inaugural Pumpkin Festival at the Raglan Bowling Club on Sunday. Vying for top honours for heaviest, biggest, best carved, best decorated, smallest, oddest and best pumpkin baking, over 70 people attended with pumpkins in all shapes and sizes, and baked into various sweet and savoury delights.

Crop Swap guardian Bexie Towle say the idea for the festival was seeded last year and many took up the challenge when giant pumpkin seeds were offered at a crop swap. “We were all hoping for a giant pumpkin, but mine ended up being too small to win biggest, too big to win smallest, so I drew a mandala on it, and it ended up winning for pumpkin art,” Bexie says. Bringing together backyard gardeners, home bakers and food foragers for swapping and sharing

high quality local food on a regular basis, guardian Suz Hall reckons Crop Swap is a great way for Raglanites to share their surplus and at the same time get to know the local community. “It just blows me away the incredible generosity of people's swaps, fuelled by the pleasure of giving, reducing waste and creating community. I think one of the most meaningful parts of Crop Swap is the sharing of plants and seeds, that go on to be cultivated, the food and seeds brought back to crop swap,

and then the cycle starts all over again,” Suz says. As well as sharing the garden abundance, there is also the sharing of garden wisdom from members with many years’ experience getting the best from their patch. “We all learn gardening tips from Geoff bringing his homemade banana and milk fertilizer. I feel like I am not alone with my gardening anymore there’s such lovely people to ask advice at each swap,” Suz says. Bexie says having garden produce is not a requirement of joining Crop Swap and baking, preserves, jams and other homemade or caught food items can be shared. “Once I just brought bags of soil - garden mix and compost - because

It’s time to have your say on Raglan’s Kerbside Foodwaste Collection S ince August 2017 Raglan residents have had the opportunity to use a kerbside food waste collection. Every household, that currently receives the kerbside recycling collection, has been provided with the equipment required for the service i.e. kitchen caddies, lime green kerbside bin and compostable bags.

This service had been researched and trialled with the Raglan community over a five year period. This service was an initiative that was requested by the Raglan community and the site set up, the infrastructure (Horizontal Composting Unit), the purchase of the equipment, and the first year of compostable bags has been fully funded to date by the Council, MfE, and Xtreme Zero Waste. The kerbside foodwaste collection service has been provided by Xtreme Zero Waste (XZW) under contract and funded by Waikato District Council (WDC) and so has been free of charge to Raglan residents who currently receive kerbside refuse and recycling. From July 2019 the cost of this service needs to be considered for inclusion in household rates. The rate proposed is $79.29 per year, which is equivalent to $1.52 per week, and would include the ongoing provision of the compostable bags, kitchen caddy, kerbside collection

4 RAGLAN Chronicle

bin, the collection, and processing of the foodwaste. Now is the time to provide feedback on whether you value the service and for those rate payers’ who currently receive a kerbside collection, their willingness to pay for the ongoing provision of this service in their rates. Note: this does not affect ratepayers who do not receive a kerbside collection. The date to make a submission on this service before is 5pm April 26th. Submissions can be made online via the WDC website (link below) or on hard copy at the Whaingaroa Environment Centre, Info Centre, Community House or the Library. Submissions can be made by anyone i.e. ratepayers, tenants, visitors, WDC values all feedback. To date, in the first 18 months of this service, Xtreme Zero Waste and the Raglan Community have diverted 225 tonnes of foodwaste out of their rubbish bags and from going to landfill. This means less of the potent greenhouse gas methane is produced in the landfill, and less fossil fuels are burnt carrying this waste to Hampton Downs 75km away. Methane is more potent than carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. 225 tons of foodwaste in landfill creates approximately 197 units of methane gas or to put it in simple terms, the same as removing 500 cars off the road. Household participation in the service has increased gradually over the first 18 months as people learn

about the benefits of foodwaste diversion. XZW is currently composting about 4 tonnes of foodwaste per week by mixing it with shredded greenwaste and putting it through the Horizontal Composting Unit, this produces weed free compost in 13 weeks. There have been many benefits of this service, with householders reporting that it saves them money on their rubbish bags. 10,000 less blue 60ltr pre-paid bags have been brought since the service started, with sales of the 30ltr pre-paid bags increasing. This service provides meaningful jobs for locals at XZW and produces a useful local product- compost- providing an example of a ‘circular economy’ right here in Raglan. Residents can use the service whenever they wish, depending on their household needs, whether regular or seasonal. Home composting is great if you can do it well, and you have a place to use your compost when it’s done. Residents who compost can keep the equipment at home and use the foodwaste collection for items they may not put in the compost, such as meat and cooked food, or if their home compost bin is full and they don’t have time to empty it. Many residents in rental properties in Raglan are not permitted to have composts on the property. There has been feedback to XZW that this service has helped with the rat problem in Raglan and that animal

strikes on rubbish bags on the street has been reduced. Another benefit from separating foodwaste in the kitchen is that people have seen how much food they waste, and change cooking and purchasing habits to avoid food wastage. Raglan is ahead of many towns and cities in having this kerbside collection, however foodwaste collections will become the norm for all urban New Zealand over the next 5 years. With the national levies on waste taken to

landfill the cost of landfilling will increase significantly over the next few years, making it financially beneficial to keep more of the heavy, greenhouse gas producing foodwaste out of the ground. If you value this service or have any feedback to the operators it is really important to take 10 minutes to fill out the submission form by 5pm April 26th. https:// www.waikatodistrict.govt.nz/yourcouncil/public-consultations/ current-consultations/raglanfood-waste-collection

‘Busker’ artist and her work turn up in all sorts of places

Celebrating 65 Years of the Raglan Volunteer Fire Brigade: A monthly column profiling local volunteer fire fighters who dedicate themselves to keeping the community safe. This column is proudly sponsored by Raglan Four Square. RAGLAN FOUR SQUARE Open 6am - 9pm 3 Bankart Street

Denise reckons the view from the bus is "inspiring", especially at sunset.

C

hildren tend to get into trouble when they draw on walls, but not Denise Fort. That’s because she’s a grownup and people generally love what she does with her artist’s marker pens in places on public view.

Denise’s work at Raglan Roast’s hole-in-the-wall outlet in Volcom Lane is a case in point. There – alongside the fiery coffee roaster – is a fine example of one of her murals in black ink, done a few years ago after Denise got talking to the then-barista, Bobo. He encouraged her to draw on the tables – and the wall. The result was big, bold, alien-like fantasy gardens of sorts with lots of detail to keep things interesting. “I like to have fun,” Denise laughs. “I create my own world.” Her version of the world is on Raglan Roast cardboard coffee cups too. They’re decorated with her quirky, intricate drawings in miniature. The 37-year-old designer cum artist is currently down-country connecting with old friends from Raglan Roast in Wellington where she also draws on walls, cars, guitars and so on. The vibe on Cuba Street in the capital is “the best”, Denise reckons, when it comes to her kind of art. There she’s even completed the odd large canvas in public – as she has

done in Auckland and Sydney – with passersby tossing coins her way. It’s busking and it works, she reckons, although sometimes being “exposed” to everyone on the street is a little daunting. “But you get more confidence the more you do it.” While she needs money to get by, Denise likes the idea of being defined by what she does rather than by what she earns. Soon this “creative human”, as she calls herself on her business card, will head back north in time for Raglan Arts Weekend over Easter. Europe – where she studied industrial design in Munich – is half a world away but “I like it here more”. She lived in Raglan and sold her artwork at the annual open studio event for seven years up until 2017. Then came a stint in Canada, a country she also feels more at home in than her native Germany, before returning to Raglan in January. Denise is looking forward to showing her collection of prints, jewellery and T-shirts again, this time alongside friend and fellow arts weekend stalwart Miranda Caird. Both artists are based at Whale Bay, Denise in an old bus behind Miranda’s bach cum studio at the ocean end of Calvert Rd. “The view is inspiring,” says Denise, looking through the bus’s back window towards Indicators and the lagoon. “The sunsets (while) lying here are absolutely amazing!” Edith Symes

Raglan Fire Brigade: SFF Marty Trueman How long have you volunteered for the Raglan Fire Brigade? Two and a half years - 15 years total. I transferred from Stratford, Taranaki. Why did you decide to volunteer? I was working for a government department, the Ministry of Education as a school caretaker and the principal was in agreement. My kids were old enough. To serve the community. Trade skills to offer. Stratford was desperate for daytime firefighters at the time I could live and work in close proximity to the fire station. Do you have A family history of Fire service volunteering? No. How do you make it work with your career and working life? An understanding wife. The role enhances my work responsibilities. My employer allows for ENZ representative through employment. How does it affect your family life? It takes time away from property management and sometimes social events and family time but it extends community contact. What do you gain from the experience? New work skills and good management of stress for confrontational dangerous medical situations. Growth of confidence in decision making outside of the fire service and leadership. Better health and safety awareness.

What aspect do you find the most difficult? As a tradie and manager the need to lay down initiatives in order to follow orders and procedures when on the fire ground. What advice or questions would you give to someone who is considering joining the service? What is your motive for wanting to join? What previous volunteer work have you done in how was it? Making the most of every training course available for example, fire competency, house burns. Are you prepared for 90% training, 10% action? What suggestions do you have for improving our fire prevention and/or public education programs? Volunteers give enough as it is, 20% of volunteers are doing 80% of the work. Utilise community events more for public display. What is the biggest issue facing fire services today? Retention of firefighters with less than three years service which comes back to the motive for joining in the first place. With this too, are the longer serving members encouraging the newbies to feel they are part of the family rather than being up against the 'old boys club' (from personal experience and I was in my 40s!). The new generation,– instant gratification, short term commitment, use the pay society, so why volunteer? Time delay for available training resources.

T

he Chronicle recently caught up with Heike Ehrlenbach, to hear about the new Albatross Collective of osteopaths in town.

Tell us about your new Osteopathic Collective. Who is involved? The Albatross Collective was started by Charlotte, Manu, Francoise and Heike, former osteopathic associates at Mels’ Clinic. We have all been practicing between eight and 19 years and have had a presence treating the Raglan community since 2004. We all work as individuals in a collective way sharing premises and patients. What does Albatross stands for? The Albatross feather stands as a sign for unity, prosperity, peace and goodwill. As a group of osteopaths, we aim to embrace these values in our personal and professional lives, by sharing resources and expenses, putting the patient before profit and by being co-operative instead of competitive. Te Raukura – a white feather or a plume of white feathers represents spiritual, physical and communal harmony, resonating with the holistic principles of osteopathic medicine.

Why did you decide to group together? We felt it was time to fly on our own to allow us to keep following our principles and ethics at their core. What will be the benefit of working as a collective? Patients can now contact us directly on our mobiles which allows for much more flexibility in bookings. We aim at sharing, referring patients amongst us and covering for each others vacancies when needed to offer continuity of care. What conditions or injuries is Osteo treatment best suited for? Following osteopathic principles we can treat from head to toe including: headaches, heart burn, sore backs, whiplash, shoulder issues, all the way to IBS, carpal tunnel or period pains. We treat all age groups from new-borns to geriatrics. What is required to practice as an osteopath? First we train for a minimum of 5 years full time.

What locations will you be offering for treatments in the Raglan and Hamilton area? We treat from 14 Wallis St in Raglan behind the Lions Op Shop as well as offering home visits if necessary. Francoise works from her home clinic in Waitetuna and Heike and Francoise both work from Hamilton respectively from Boundary Rd and East St. Heike also offers treatments from her home clinic in Te Mata/Aotea. aving a break from the usual format of playing bowls proved to be quite a feature on Saturday, April 6. We played two bowls singles. Normally, one would play four bowls in a singles match, but by only playing two it quickened the whole game up. Playing 14 ends also help quicken up the day. If you were a little bit off line with your first bowls it made you try harder to make sure you had at least one bowl close to the jack, so that your opponent didn’t score too many points against you. It certainly was a faster game, the weather was a lovely sunny autumn day, perfect conditions to play in. Twelve competitors took part in this event which gave an even number of players

to prevent a bye situation. We had to play four games of 14 ends and before you know it was a lunchtime and all the games were over. Winners were decided by whoever had the most wins and then who had scored the most points. Two players won four games each so it came down to who had scored the most points over the competition. Darryl Hawkins had 36 points, over Terry Green’s 60 points. That was a very close game indeed. Congratulations to you both. The last two aggregate events will be played on April 13 and then again on April 27. Roll-ups happen on Wednesdays and Saturdays. A small fee applies. Happy Bowling, Eileen Stephens

Rediscover the ‘wild child’ in you with Kura Taiao

Robz Jones teaches a group of kids during the Wild Child Holiday programme.

W

here the wild things are takes on a new meaning with Raglan’s newest programme Kura Taiao (nature school).

Developed by Robz Jones in 2013 as Whaingaroa Nature School initially to share knowledge of edible and medicinal plants,

Kura Taiao now offers workshops and courses for people of all ages looking to reconnect with their ‘wild side’ and rediscover the ancient survival skills and practices. These school holidays young nature lovers can join the Wild Child holiday programme and in Term 2 the after school

Re-wilded programme will be running for six weeks. For the more mature wild child, Robz offers a plant connection and wild medicine on May 2 and 30, and are a moon apart. “Kura Taiao is a way of getting people to reconnect with nature at a deeper level,” Robz says. He uses the analogy of the way a surfer would look at a wave as opposed to a nonsurfer. “Someone who doesn’t surf might see the wave and enjoy its simple shape and form. But a surfer will know the deeper story of the wave, how it feels, where it’s come from and the journey the wave has taken. If you apply that level of acknowledgment to everything around us, it gives us a deeper connection with our world.” Robz reckons children still have a nature connection, and they love going bush, having fun and embarking on a journey of awakening their senses. The holiday programme is designed for kids to explore wild plant wisdom using stories and play, and concluding with bush skills such as tracking and shelter building at the end of the three-day course. The after school programme includes story-telling, crafts, games, bush skills and lots of exploring. There’s also whittling, hut building, tracking, blazer trails, bird language and lots more depending on the weather. Robz discovered his ‘wild child’ when he first travelled to New Zealand from his home town Bradford, Yorkshire as a 17-year-old. The ‘city kid’ was introduced the New Zealand’s natural wonders during the six

months he was here and he says it was those early introductions to the natural world that shaped his life. He came back to New Zealand as a 19-year-old to live and started his lifelong learning journey in the university of nature and to basically, as he puts It, become a ‘good guy’ and live a simple life. Living in the Far North, Robz worked as a caregiver, became a solo dad to Matai (now 8-years-old) and then embarked on a fivemonth cycling trip around the country with Matai when he turned two. It was on this journey that Robz started learning about the plant world through his own experiences and using books to find out more. “By the end of that trip there weren’t many plants I couldn’t name,” he says. He sees his journey into nature as lifelong and recently he traversed Karioi at night with only the moonlight and his natural instincts to guide his way. "People didn't understand why I did it, but to experience the mountain in that way was incredible." Part of that journey is always asking questions of the world around him and looking for magic everywhere in the smallest of ways. “It’s about seeing and listening in the way that we used to.” Janine Jackson To find out more about Kura Taiao visit www.kurataiao.org.nz or email kurataiao@ mail.com.

Local artist creates nude ink paintings fuelled with energy

Raglan Arts Weekend artist, Dominique Marriott, aims to capture the essence of a figure in the fewest brush strokes possible.

L

ocal artist and rising talent, Dominique Marriott, is turning the creative process on its head with her new must-see performance-based exhibition in Hamilton at the end of this month. Visitors will be able to experience how Dominique infuses the ancient practice of Japanese brush calligraphy into her nude paintings, in an energetic performance where the artist paints live from a nude model in the gallery. The artist will quickly paint a large volume of ink works using a Japanese calligraphy brush, with each piece completed in just a few minutes. Only a few are selected later as final artworks. The performance will allow visitors to really engage with Dominique’s creative process. “It’s a pretty risky strategy because artists usually present only their most successful pieces to the public, but here I’m inviting you to engage with the whole process, flaws and all,” says Dominique. “I try to remain free from judgement, so I can work intuitively.

This technique is really about putting your energy into the work itself and being totally mentally present during it.” Dominique is also going to be participating in the Raglan Arts Weekend over Easter where visitors will be able to purchase her work and chat to her about the creative process. Dominique’s practice is influenced largely by Zen and the Japanese Arts. The artist has been learning Shodō— the Way of Japanese Calligraphy—to fully understand the principles at play. Shodō is substantially rooted in philosophy. It’s a form of active meditation that trains the mind to flow freely, without judgement or attachment. “It is said that ink markings allow us to see our character or our current state of mind,” Dominique explains. “Ink is a difficult, unforgiving medium. It’s very responsive, so the slightest hesitation will show on paper.” Visitors to Dominique’s exhibition in Hamilton will also get to witness the unique life drawing experience, usually only accessible to artists. “In this setting, nudity is comfortable and completely natural,”

explains Dominique. “I believe this should be experienced by a wider audience.” Dominique has a degree in Visual Arts from Unitec in Auckland. More recently, she has been tutored by Nelson-based Akiko Crowther, one of the few Grand Master Calligraphers outside of Japan. Akiko has recognised Dominique’s talent and expressed an interest in mentoring the artist to become a Master Calligrapher herself. “It’s a pretty exciting time for me and it’s definitely having a profound impact on my life outside of my work too,” says Dominique.

Don’t miss out on Dominique’s performance exhibition in Hamilton at Freit Contemporary, 10 High St. 18 April, 5:30 pm (performance starts at 6 pm). Limited spaces available so bookings are essential. Email: info@dominiquemarriott.com. Exhibition open until 11 May. During the Raglan Arts Weekend over Easter, Dominique will be displaying her work with fellow artist Marise Rarere, below Raglan House, 45 Bow St. Sat to Mon, 10 am to 5 pm. Old School Arts Centre
